I have a guard skill set but am tall and play 5 and 4 how can I convince my coach to let me be a guard.

I am 5'10 in 8th grade i've asked him multiple times if I can be a guard and he always says he'll think about it but doesn't end up following through, for some background info my strengths are my handles and driving, my post moves arre pretty bad and I'm not that strong, I can shoot well.

Clock rules

Asked to help out at the Varsity game running the clock in Indiana. I searched everywhere online for official clock rules and can't find them. Anyone have knowledge of where to get them or know them well enough to share.
Questions I have. 1)Full timeouts are 1 minute and get a 15 second warning horn, do 30 second timeouts also get a 15 second warning? 2) Does the clock ever stop after a made shot, like in the last minute of the game or anything? 3) What pregame and halftime horn warnings are used? Is it just the three minute warning horn?

Everything else seems pretty basic, but if anything else unusual is thought of, feel free to share.

When people say MJ played against the greats, what are they saying?

Michael Jordan's Era:

PG: Magic Johnson

SG: Clyde Drexler

SF: Larry Bird

PF: Karl Malone

C: Hakeem Olajuwon

LeBron James' Era:

PG: Stephen Curry

SG: Kobe Bryant

SF: Kevin Durant

PF: Tim Duncan

C: Shaquille O’Neal

Are we they saying that LeBron never played against the greats?

How to carry my team?

I got a tournament like setup and im the only person on my team that’s plays basketball. I’ve been developing my 2 friends for 3 months and they’re made progress but compared to the competition it’s nothing. They can have nice defence and get rebounds.

The other 6 teams i gotta face all have basketball players ik all of them as friends but it don’t matter.

PROS: Dribbling no one has stopped me yet. High stamina i run around just to get open in pickup games. 3s on the “good day”

I want to work on my shooting get my percentage as high as possible so i can shoot wherever i want. I also want to work on stamina and explosive power and speed. I have to play defence and play offence against 6 teams and i can’t do that if im dribbling and running up and down the court.

Books/Resources for Basketball Conditioning

I've been reading coaching books mostly help my kiddo. We do swimming in addition to basketball. In swimming muscle conditioning is very important. I was wondering if there are any good resources for this in basketball. I think it is more difficult. The game is longer you have a mix of explosive jumping, running, fine motor control over a long period of time, as well as a team of players doing different things. However, some of the concepts seem relevant. For example, mesoscale planning sprint workouts vs endurance workouts, building, lactic acid tolerance, recovery etc. I did order a copy of "Complete Conditioning for Basketball". I don't know if it is any good. Bonus points if it covers age group 8–to-11-year-olds. I mean there is always just running and lifting, but I feel like conditioning through basketball drills is better theoretically.

Need a bit of help on offense

So when your sizing up or getting ready to make a move on offence, where should my eyes be. Locked on to the defenders eyes, defenders feet, should i be scanning the court for options, should i look at the ring?
Thanks in advance

What's the best way to learn basketball if you know next to nothing about it?

Hello, I'm 15 and I am terrible at basketball. I like it, but I don't know how to properly learn it. I also don't want to go to courses because my lack of time. My classmates have shown me some random tricks, but I suck at doing them. Is there any way to learn easily, and properly for someone who has no talent? I basically just want to know how to play regularly, not to become a professional.

My younger (not little) brother is the tallest kid in his school as a sophomore and loves basketball, who should he be watching?

My younger brother is 15 and loves basketball, he just made the JV team as a sophomore and is currently 6’7” 180, and hasn’t grown less than 3 inches in a year since he was born, the family expects him to reach at least 6’10” or 6’11”. His arms make his legs look short and he can stuff it (apparent you cant say the D work or your post gets deleted) “days when my joints and bones aren’t sore its easy, but most of the time they are sore and its harder”.

As you can probably image from the age gap, our dad is much older than average so doesnt work with him in the gym and i live in the next state over and dont spend as much time with him as i would like. I played a bit of basketball in high school (JV through junior year) but was only ok and prioritized golf and baseball. I love watching my schools and pro teams but I’m no coach or expert, and id like to help him start watching the right players to learn, but also in games and in a college setting so he can set good expectations for himself.

Of course Hunter Dickenson is the top brow of big men but id like to find some solid guys that he can watch that might help him out a ton, especially rebounding and defense guys and on teams that might get more national coverage he can watch. I went to CSU and am Familiar with Graham Ike which i have suggested, but maybe more knowledgeable people would have better suggestions.

His biggest weaknesses right now are playing timid, getting open in the post and utilizing his length on offense (hes a natural at using that length on defense, other teams run away from the paint like ants when hes in). His coach runs a small-ball motion offense that runs the baseline and never really gives him a chance to do any kind of pick-n-roll stuff, as a result he doesnt get many minutes either (6-7 minutes total in his last game which was 4x10 minute quarters).

I also would love to start sending him videos that he can use for drills or education to learn more about the sport, so youtube creators would be a great help as well.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Id love to see my brother excel at something he loves and maybe pay for college while he’s at it.

Going to my first high school basketball practice tmrw and I'm kinda nervous.

So tomorrow I'm going to my first high school basketball practice. I joined the team and started practicing. Even though I've been practicing and dieting and stuff, getting ready for the season, I still feel kinda nervous. I just don't wanna make a ass of myself or be the weak link on the team.

Sorry for the venting, but just wish me luck I guess.

Is it a good idea to practice close up shots and far range shots, or should I prioritize one over the other?

Recently I've been getting more into shooting in basketball (i use to mainly play defense) and I was wondering this

Does any basketball bounce straight back up anymore?

Does anyone sell a regulation men's basketball that is guaranteed not to be lopsided, warped or oblong? I can understand it if you are spending around $20 or $30 on a leather indoor ball, but if you are spending $80 on a Wilson like I recently did, and the thing bounces every which-way when you dribble, that is just BS. Anyone know of a brand/model that a guy can count on and doesn't have to return as soon as he gets it?

After 25+ years of casual hooping with only Evolutions, I finally wanted to try the NBA game ball experience. Question for the cold-climate hoopers….

Got the WGB as a present to myself for my 43rd birthday about a 2 months ago as a way to commit to going to the gym more frequently since my motorcycle trackday/club racing season has long been over up here in Minnesota. Only have maybe about 20 hrs in with it so far, but the feel is coming along as far as break-in goes. Still have a looooong way to go before it feels prime.

Only real question I have is for the players that use this (or other genuine leather balls: Spalding NBA game ball, TF-M, etc) in the northern half of the planet during the wintertime when the air is much drier inside gymnasiums than during spring/summer. How do you combat the overly dry hands other than constantly spitting on your hands or using forehead sweat to get the ball moistened so it isn’t as slick? I was thinking of hand lotion of some sort, but wanted to ask the collective knowledge here first.

Thanks in advance!

Can I develop basketball skill in a year?

For reference I'm 6'0 and 16 years old. I've always catered to football but I never really liked it I was just good at it. I want to start playing basketball and I have little skill/experience so I can do the basics like dribbling but my handles are weak and my shots are inconsistent. I play with people older and younger than me that are far better than me and have been playing their whole life which motivates me to want to be better. Although, I don't know if I can do it in a year's time.

Basketball History- Sports History course

Hi all,

Just got the green light to build a Sports History elective for high school juniors and seniors. There’s so much to include in the basketball unit and I was wondering what people had on advice to include. Obviously Naismith, the origins, ABA, NBA, etc. but looking for some more specific things.

Thanks!

Catch and shoot footwork.

When shooting from the catch while stationary (think corner specialists) should I have both my feet set when I catch it or do a hop/1 2 for rhythm.

I have a higher percentage with hop/ 1 2 but my coach keeps telling me to be set as its more efficient.

Looking for any advice

How your shooting form influences how ppl perceive you?

Anyone notice that ppl are much quicker to perceive you as a shooting threat/"shooter" if you have good form? I've been told I have really nice shooting form; tbh I've worked on my mechanics a ton, and tho honestly there are a lot of things about my form that I feel are unorthadox/not textbook, I suppose from a third-person's glance, it looks like I have good shooting mechanics. I've noticed that when I am playing w/ ppl for the first time, they are very quick to start playing up on me and labeling me as a shooter from my first make.

In contrast, just today, I was playing w/ some guys I've never played w/ before, and my teammate made multiple 3s. He doesn't have good shooting mechanics tho, he kinda shoots like a football player if you know what I mean. Even after he swished multiple 3s in a row, the opposing team was advising his man to just leave him open b/c he can't shoot. Whereas for me, after my very first 3 point attempt, they called me a shooter and told my man to not give me any space. It was just interesting to notice how little I had to "prove" myself for the defense to start playing me tight, whereas the same guys just assumed my teammate was lucky even after he swished multiple 3s in a row. I bet coaches tend to make these same assumptions when evaluating players.
