ANNOUNCEMENT: r/Astrology & r/AskAstrologers WILL GO DARK FOR 2 DAYS (June 12-13) TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROTEST AGAINST REDDIT'S DECISION TO KILL 3RD PARTY APPS

BLACKOUT DATES: June 12-13

r/Astrology and r/AskAstrologers, with a combined membership of over half a million, will participate in a 2-day blackout to protest Reddit's decision on 3rd party apps. Reddit is set to begin charging exorbitant fees (millions of dollars) to 3rd party apps for the use of the Reddit API, effectively killing the option to have apps. You can particpate in the blackout as well, by not visiting any Reddit subs for these two days.

Below is an explanation provided by r/EarthPorn along with links to other resources for understanding what is happening.

__________________________

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. [My note: Those links are to posts made by the app devs about this issue.]

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord.
  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Astrology of the Nodes, Reincarnation?

EA Writers like JWG often refer to past life stuff w reference to the nodes, do y'all subscribe to that? Things like squares to the nodes being past life "skipped steps".

I kinda feel like the natal chart is a map for us for this life, and like the nodal axis draws attention to natural strengths & abilities that are likely inherent to us due to our childhood conditioning, family birth order & parental influences, possibly inhereted skills/biases/values, things like that. But I see authors frequently reference past lives when they are talking about the nodes (and PPP), so I wonder what other members takes are on this matter. I'm not opposed to the idea of reincarnation and how it might relate to the soul's journey, but to me it feels kind of like a cheap explanation for someone's chart in this life. What do you think??

All input is appreciated.

10th house placements and external validation

Does anyone have 10th house placements specifically PERSONAL planets? And how does it manifest for you? The 10th house rules public arena as it is directly opposite the private realm of the 4H…. So it’s easy for some people to say “who cares what other people think” but I’ve found that 10th house placements directly are supported by and derive value from their contribution to the external world. Same holds true for Capricorns. I don’t think this is necessarily bad because it means the idea of leaving a legacy behind for others to enjoy is a motivator. You can’t have a good reputation unless you actually positively impacted the external world, right?

Full Moon in Sagittarius, but in the sky it's closer to Scorpio?

I like to do some star gazing and moon gazing and do some beginner interpretation of what the position of the moon means while it reaches it's phases peaks.

Yesterday I was looking at the sky and knew that the moon would be total full moon at 04h42 (Portugal Time) and at midnight it was right on the middle of Scorpio. Now i checked the position of the moon at peak full moon but it was still very close to Scorpio although closer to Sagittarius than before.

When gazing I really thought it would be a Scorpio full moon, not a Sagittarius one.

My question is what is the criteria for the moon and planets to be considered as being on a certain zodiac constellation.

Thank you very much in advance!

Choosing a House System

Hi! When one is just learning astrology, should you decide which House system to work with from the start, or is that something that can be figured out later. When did you choose the system you work with, and do you wish you did anything different?

Non-Western Astrology

I am only a beginner with astrology. However, one of the events that first sparked my interest in Astrology was watching 'Great Courses' video college lectures on Meso-America. I was so impressed with the mathematics that went into Mayan Astrology.

As an English speaker from a Western country, I understand that to some degree, it would only seem natural that Western astrology would get the most attention in my part of the world.

However, with globalization and the internet age, I don't understand why other astrological traditions aren't studied more here in the West. I think even the fact that many people equate the word 'astrology' to be synonymous with 'Western astrology' is, I think, a prime example of cultural bias.

Where would be good sources to learn about Chinese, Indian or Mayan Astrology? What about other cultures that get even less attention for their Astrological Traditions?

Does your partner have a lot of placements in your 7th house?

What is the most obvious synastry placement between you and your partner?

On the flip side, do you have a particularly difficult placement that is working out surprisingly well?

Saturn - Moon Transits

I'm curious about your experience with Saturn conjunct - oppose - square your natal moon . Like what happened ? What did you learn ? How did it change you ? How did it impact your life ?etc
It would be also interesting if you can add the natal conditions of both planets.

Will having a planet in a particular sign alter a lot of its energy? For example will mars in 8th house basically be Scorpio mars no matter what the sign is?

How much sign energy is given to the planet here and how much of it is from the house?

If you have Sun square Moon in your natal, how was your parents relationship?

I did some research and people who have this aspect usually (not always) grew up in a dysfunctional family. Sometimes the parents were divorced, separated or stayed together but didn’t have the best chemistry.

Aspect patterns

Hello! Was wondering if there were any tips identifying/visually isolating aspect patterns easily? I'm new to this particular subject and I get a little overwhelmed trying to distinguish all the aspect lines on the natal wheel (especially when they cross over each other or there's lots of conjunctions)! I'm sure there's a simpler way of doing this (and I'm almost certain I've forgotten something obvious) I just haven't figured it out yet 😅 Thank you!

Does the 8H/12H weaken the expression of its signs too?

They say that planets in the 8 & 12H are frustrated or weakened in their expression, but what about the signs on that house?

Ie, if the house cusp is Capricorn, would it mean the person has a lack of a responsible attitude towards matters of that house?

Looking for a book

Hello there,

It’s a long shot but maybe I’ll get lucky.

I had this astrology book many years ago but lost it somehow (I thought I still had it, but when I looked for it a few days ago it was nowhere to be found).

There’re a few details I managed to recall:

  1. Book was written in English, by an American author (male).
  2. Book was published somewhat recently, in 198x to 200x
  3. In the introduction part, the author mentioned that he had a habit of spending his birthday away from home (to a chosen place upon his chart reading).
  4. Possibly for beginners.
  5. Easy to read (not much of obscure writing).

I think this book is kind of popular as it was recommended to me on an astrology forum (which is unfortunately no longer accessible).

Thank you in advance!
