A good place to ask law enforcement related questions that you would not get answered anywhere else.
We are a community of sworn and non-sworn public safety staff who are here to answer your questions.
There are many aspects of LE that are portrayed incorrectly in movies, TV, myth and legend. You may even believe some of them. Ask us any question you need answered in reference to LE and we will give you a no-BS answer.
Every mod is a verified sworn LEO (law enforcement officer) and will try to answer your questions with as little fluff as possible.
We ask that you abide by the following rule when posting:
No anti-LE posts will be tolerated. Posting something that even remotely resembles anti-LE, baiting an LE poster or "poking the bear" is a bannable offense, this is your only warning.

Saw a video of horse mounted police in Toronto basically getting out of the way of a dude fleeing in a stolen vehicle.
One of the cops and one of the horses was injured which leads to my question, what purpose do they serve in modern policing? What is the benefit of having such units?
They can't outrun a car and there is a risk of injury or worse if hit by one.
Horses have a finite amount of energy unlike a car, which you can just refuel and run for shifts as long as you want.
Horses are not cheap. They need shelter, food, housing, Healthcare etc.
Is it just a tradition thing that some places retain these units for or is there a purpose or niche that such units actually fill?
Hey everyone, I’m 21 male( turning 22 soon) I have been applying for several entry level positions within the PD, with the ultimate goal of becoming a cop. I live in California so I understand the leniency is going to be more tolerable compared to other states, yet when I was 19 I did take mushrooms a few times, while also micro-dosing to get over my depression. Just want someone to be transparent and see if I should search for other careers options. Its been a bit heartbreaking/ stressful because I finally believe I’ve found a career I want to pursue and seeing other comments causing this , I have beyond struggled to find something worth pursuing. I used to smoke weed but have been a month sober completely, I know nicotine isn’t illegal yet have been 5 months clean off of it. I’ve been beyond committed onto turning a new leaf within my life, showing it through my actions yet am beyond stressed about this.
I’m looking for a little low power flashlight/task light that can clip on a molle carrier. Something similar to this stream light clipmate
Hello, for a non law enforcement position. What kind of pre-employment drug test do they do? Is it a urine test?
Howdy!
I applied to a police recruit position about 3 months ago, I passed the civil test, agility test, panel interview, voice stress test, and just did the medical assessment and psych evaluation. The latter two pending review from the agency.
I’m hoping to get some favorable news next week, hopefully? I’m pretty optimistic but the waiting game is eating me up!
Any advice for this hopeful future officer? I cannot wait to get into the academy and get into a career that will be challenging and fulfilling.
Thanks!
And says the kid is under arrest. But he never gets him out of the car and in the end lets him go. Isn't "under arrest" the part where you use handcuffs and take someone to jail?
I’m about to start applying to different agencies and a few people have told me different things. If you started at a big agency (such as 200k+ people in the city) did you regret it, feel overwhelmed at first? This has to deal with Frisco Texas so if there are any officers who had or do work there in this group is it a good agency to start. It’s about an hour from my current location maybe a little further.
Okay so when you’re making a left turn that is yield on green is it correct to roll out past the white line into the middle of the intersection? I see most people do this but I always wait behind the line until the intersection is clear. Missouri if that helps
Have you went to an through an academy on your own, not sponsored/hired by an agency? How is that process? You can just call up an talk with personnel at an academy an request to be in a class? And just pay whatever it cost? I've read stories over the years of folks being able to go through an academy but they had a slim chance of actually being hired because of whatever reason, but they were able to go through training because I guess money for the academy.. Heard this happening with vets using gi bill. Due to reasons to include me just not even knowing I was able to use mine... an now it's going to expire in about 8 months.. I'm literally thinking about seeing if I can just try an, well, go to an academy with it. Which if it goes successfully that should cover it. Too be honest... it might change later but I mean hey if I end up getting in LE then cool but I'm not like dead set or it's my "dream job". I want to be in an academy an get the experience. Have it in resume. I dont know. Just something different. Have more/those skills... have more confidence etc.I know that probably sounds crazy or doesn't make sense like why go through that but not really gonna try (to hard) to even get hired in LE?! So yeah... what are your thoughts on that? Have you gone through an academy just for the "experience"? Has anyone gone through an academy by self sponsor here an was not able to be hired for whatever reason? Have a great day an stay safe out there
Hey there people, I have a former coworker who is applying for a LE role and is asking for a reference which I agree but I don’t feel comfortable giving both my home and work address is there any way O can go around that?
Ok so my best friend is a marine and when he talks about the other branches— they are “superior.” I also saw a police body cam video today when a pedestrian said “officer” and the response was, “I’m not an officer I’m a trooper. OR when I’m watching law and order and someone will say “sorry detective” and Olivia will reply, “actually is CAPTAIN.”
So I’m just wondering is it moreso a respect thing, an ego thing, a mixture of both. And if like troopers do kind of side eye officers or does the SWAT team ever think some things are beneath them (as an example), etc etc.
Lets say you are at a traffic light that is on a regular 2 lane double yellow road. That one lane allows left turns, right turns, and going straight at the light. So no separate turning lanes, only one lane.
If two vehicles are at the light, one in each direction, and they are both turning left, should they have the right of way over someone passing on the shoulder?
I always felt that someone passing on the shoulder should not have the right of way, because in some cases, they are literally going off the road to get around the turning vehicle.
There have been times where if I was turning left, I would go and end up cutting off someone passing on the shoulder. It usually results with some road rage from that other person.
So just curious, if I make the left turn, and the person who is passing on the shoulder would hit me, who is at fault? Does the person passing on the shoulder and over the white light have any type of right of way? Would they be at fault?
On September 15th I earned a conditional position with a Police agency. I passed the physical test, NTN test, medical test, my only criminal record is a illegal left turn from last year, and I’m confident that I did well on the physiological test. The official interview was on October 3rd. The detective during the interview said it would be about 6-8 weeks before I got the official offer. That mean’s around November 15th-30th I’ll get an answer. In the meantime should I start applying to other agencies just in case something falls through?
Also should we get out the license and registration before you approach the car or wait for you to ask for it? I always turn the car off and leave my hands on the wheel until instructed otherwise. Never had any issues but was just curious on what makes you all more comfortable.
Cop for 8 years and have about half of a GI Bill left. Used about half of it trying to get a degree, but I hate college and loathe the thought of going back to finish out a degree. Plan to retire from law enforcement, but don't want to just leave my GI Bill sitting there because it's quite literally free money. Any suggestions for something other than going back to a standard college program that could still be a useful fallback if law enforcement didn't work out for some reason? Or just something enjoyable to do/learn that I would be able to use the GI Bill on?
I reached out to a recruiter and we scheduled a department tour for a potential agency I’ll be applying for.
What should I wear? It’s simple and I don’t think it requires a suit or anything.
So I had a recent psych exam which was the MMPI-2 which I’ve never taken. It’s always been a different one. In the questions, there were some that were true or false, while I know there are no right or wrong answers. I felt weird answering these such as
“I seldom get upset or angry easily” My question is this: false, that can mean no I DO get angry easily OR no I don’t get angry at all. Being a very analytical person it was very confusing.
Which would be the right answer if I do not in fact get easily angry or upset, true or false.
Does anyone work or know anyone that works for City of Newark Police Department in Delware? I'm thinking about transferring but I would like to learn more about the department (Morale, Duties, Good or bad department to work for?, What are their typical assignments?, ETC).
My husband has been a deputy for about 6 years, he recently joined our SWAT team and I’m finding he’s slowly turning more inward. He doesn’t really like to talk about his day, and that’s ok, I don’t need to be the one to fix all of his problems. But I’ve asked him if he would like to go to therapy but he’s not interested. He comes home and goes to the gym for a few hours but I feel like there is more he/I can do to help him relax.
As a spouse, what are some ways I can help? And as a LEO, what helps you?
Hey guys, i am beginning the process of joining a local LE agency, i took the initial county wide civil service exam. i haven’t gotten my scores yet but im sure i did well. physical should be in a few months. i have an 800 credit score, i am a home owner, been at the same job now for 5 years. never been arrested or involved in any altercations or anything, i am a conceal carry permit holder for a few years now. i am 26 years old. my primary concern is that ive had a few speeding tickets in my time driving. about 4 of them in 5 years, as well as a ticket that was knocked down to “disobeying a traffic control device” and my drivers license was suspended for 6 months as a result of the speeding tickets. other than that blemish i don’t think a background investigator could find any reason not to recommend me for hire. so basically- am i cooked or do i still have a shot? thanks in advance.
Hi, I'm 30f and my husband 31m is a police officer of 4 years and the last week has been an actual shitstorm in our town's police department, but specifically for my husband.
my husband was in an officer involved shooting that ended with the suspect being fatally shot by my husband and another officer.
While husband is doing okay with that event, our department and town was absolutely rocked by the suicide of my husband's best friend, another officer here, 6 days later. This has absolutely wrecked my husband, he is grappling with feelings of not having done enough, and thinking that he could have somehow changed the outcome.
The department has been very supportive of him since the OIS and are continuing to support him and the rest of the PD in all available ways.
Here's my question: how do I support him without completely burning myself out, while also processing my own grief (the fallen officer has been a casual friend of mine since middle school), and taking on all of our care tasks for my husband, our 2yo and 4yo, and our household tasks? I don't feel like i am doing enough, even though I am consistently checking in, trying to make his life as easy as I can,and just being available for him.
Thank you so much in advance. Things have been so incredibly difficult here, and this is uncharted territory for us both.
Edit to add: my husband and I both have our own therapists and a marriage counselor
Hey y'll
Edit: Filed under noble idea with some ideas for planning it out a bit further in advance and making sure folks feel comfortable eating it.
My family isn't getting together until Saturday and my neighbor and his wife don't have their girl this time (her dad's year). Neighbor and I are both meat smoker guys and we have a ton of meat left this year and thinking about doing a long smoke with the day off. We'd love to feed as many people as we can and with some recent incidents in the area (break-ins which were solved by literally catching the kid jimmying a door and a couple rescue calls for some older folks around) figured we'd feed the police and fire folks.
Any ideas for how to go about this?
Figured we'd call the stations (County PD + Local FD) and tell them what we're up too and bring it there? Or maybe come by the address (bc we'll need to be watching stuff + sides all day, we're thinking we could probably feed 2-3 shifts with as much meat as we have left and how long we'll be out there + we can hold in coolers)?
Or is this just one of those "noble thoughts"?
TIA
Just got an Sig AXG Combat for duty. I went to safarilands website but it doesn’t have the specific model firearm for me to select. Does anyone have an idea of which Sig model is the same ?
I applied to an agency and ranked 8 on their list. My question is, should I expect to hear from them soon? They have 5 vacancies. Will they contact all of the top 16 candidates or just the top 5? Their most recent email reads as follows:
“The fourteen (16) highest ranks will be referred for consideration for employment as vacancies occur. Those not selected will be deferred for future consideration”.
