Okay, Alaska! Be warned! Start of RANT in 3…2…1…

What. The. Eff. Is. Up. With those drivers who station themselves in the passing lane baaaaarrrely going 5 miles above the posted speed limit AND refusing to let others pass??? They. Steadfastly. Remain. In. The. Passing. Lane. (And because I had no photos of these egregiously insane and very vexing drivers, I decided to post this sale going on in The Valley…seriously WTF?)

fly fishing Q

If I have 2 full days in the middle of June for guided fly fishing would I be better off around Juneau or Sitka in pursuit of sockeye/trout/dollys?

False Pass, Silver Bay Season Predictions...

I'm leaving June 6th for False Pass. This is my first season with Silver Bay. Anyone that's worked there last year or going this year care to chine in with their season predictions? I was wondering with all the plants shutting down, would that bring an influx of salmon processing to the Silver Bay plants? I don't mind working 16-18 hour days.

Visiting in June?

Planning a trip next year and trying to figure out when is best. I’ve been up once for a month of work in October but it was pretty rainy.

Have about a week and would like to do some fishing and whale watching etc.

Was thinking to fly into Anchorage do the Kenai peninsula or go to Juneau? Would love to hear suggestions on what to see/where to go!

Would like to see a bit more sun than last time trying to avoid too much heat so was thinking June or September?

Car shopping

Hi friends! I will be moving to Anchorage with my husband and 85-lb dog in August and we are looking at trading my Kia soul in for something more durable before we drive up and I’d love some insight. I’ve lived in Florida my whole life and have no concept of Anchorage weather and wildlife.

My main question is for Jeep owners- how often are you guys taking the top off up in Alaska?

Our top choices are the Bronco and the Subaru Outback Wilderness. I know the Outback is the practical choice, but the Bronco is my dream car lol.

I hate myself for being hung up on two details of the Bronco and wish I didn’t care so much about:

  1. the ability to remove the top and doors
  2. The way the back of the bronco opens- I love that it’s a door that swings out and I’ve seen cool additions that people have added like a fold down table top to the back door- we’d make great use of that for sure.

I have always wanted a convertible and I will have this car until it dies. I have never owned a convertible though so I don’t know how often people actually take the tops off of them. But if it’s not something I can even USE in Anchorage with the weather and wildlife, then I want to take that into consideration. We love to hike and fish and camp and be outdoors.

Summer job, Skagway vs Denali??!!

please let me know if I should post elsewhere:)

Hey y’all, Was just offered two jobs one in Skagway (may-mid October) the other is in that little resort strip right outside of Denali NP (may-September). Same company, similar pay/perks/position. I CANNOT DECIDE PLEASE HELP.

I’m 27F, been to Alaska before, mostly SE. I just want to have a sicka** season with adventures, beautiful scenery, and a dope community of folks to hang with! Thanks for reading/ responding if you do! I have until the end of today to decide

I'd love to hear from people who have worked either place, and would like help choosing which would be the best opportunity for fun adventures, as well as general advice!

if it matters, the differences are: Skagway is more fast pasted, less free time, longer season so pays about +$1,800 more, housing is a shared room. Employee base of 25-30 people.

Denali: bit slower but still 55 hr weeks, guaranteed 2 day weekend and single room, shorter season (-$1,800). Employee base of about 16 people.

NBA games

I’ve been up here for a few years. I want to get back into watching NBA games (specifically the Spurs). How do y’all watch games? I’m concerned about “region blocks”.

Katmai NP camping

I tried to book one night at Brooks camp at Katmai on July 8, but it filled up it seconds and I missed out. Now I'm going to spend the night in the wilderness. Anyone ever done that before and have any advice? I've camped in the wilderness before, so I have the equipment and a teeny bit of experience.

Do you think Denali is worth visiting?

I'm solo traveling to Alaska in July. I'm thinking about driving the 6 hours from Anchorage one day. Do some activities inside the Denali National Park the second day (zip lining and river rafting), and then heading back to Anchorage the following day.

The 6 hour drive is the main thing giving me some pause. If it was half that, I would not hesitate. I'm trying to maximize the awesomeness of my Alaska trip soaking up the outdoors. I've already got Kenai on the itinerary and a lot of other stuff. Do people who've been to Denali feel like it's worth the 6 hour drive if you're going to spend a day in the park?

I appreciate anyone's opinions/insights!

Tell me your Alaska stories?

I'm not visiting, I'm not moving, I don't need advice, I'm just curious. Like, for instance, going smelting in the spring is a big deal here in my corner of Maine. You go trekking out through the woods at night to your favorite secret spot, with 20 other people who also think it's their secret spot. You stand in ice cold river water in hip waders, and use a hand net. I can tell you stories about my uncle getting caught over the limit and trying to make a run for it (and all the reasons that is stupid as hell) and stories about going with my Grampa the first time, and learning to clean them on the "splitting log", then cooking them for breakfast on the wood stove, in a house that was still dry after 2 generations. That kind of story. Pretty please?

Brooks Range - Visiting Alaska beyond Kenai/Katmai/Wrangel/Denali/Valdez

I have been visiting Alaska regularly since 2013, with increasing frequency, for R&R and wildlife photography. This year, I am getting a bit curious about the Brooks Range, Gates of Artic, and other areas that are not commonly visited by most tourists. I would love to hear locals perspectives on off-the-beaten-path Alaskan's natural treasures, the most remote stuff I have done is to visit and camp in Wrangel a few times.

Thanks in advance!

How do you truly prepare to move to Alaska? Very long post, sorry.

Please let me know if I should post this elsewhere!!

My husband is thinking about moving to Alaska for a year or two once he's no longer incarcerated. Like immediately after, like the day he's released kind of thing. He comes back soon next year. He's hoping to find a job there, save up some money, and then leave Alaska and eventually start his own trucking/moving business. He doesn't have experience in high-paying industries like oil extraction or commercial fishing, but he's worked in some construction temporarily and metalwork before. However, being a felon makes the job search more complicated.

I'm currently researching potential job opportunities in Alaska, but it's tough to find direct contacts in industries like oil, gas, and fishing which is what my husband wants me to look up. He wants to write them letters, like the mangers or bosses of these companies and I guess build a connection that way. While Alaska is known for its stunning scenery and unique experiences, that I’d love for him and I to experience, I'm uncertain about the feasibility of our plan and its financial implications, especially with conflicting information about the cost of living there. Every post I’ve read its been “the cost of living is high” OR “the cost of living isn't too bad, its low actually”.

He said that he’ll find a good job, save money, regardless of the cost of living, and then pursue his business dream. I love his idea of the business, and I told him that maybe we should just stick to our original plan of me saving up money and then once he's released, we move to a big city in our state. Or we just move to a different state like Arizona or something, but my husband is set on Alaska at the moment. I feel like I'm being negative when bring up certain things because I know he's genuine and very passionate about this. I definitely believe we could make a life there, but just not in this way. But also at that rate, why even go? It’s not like the plan is to live there forever. He wants to leave after awhile. What's in Alaska that he cant find or do anywhere else? Other than the beauty and life experience, why start out there? It just seems harder. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Alaska Residency

Hello,

I work seasonal in Alaska and it has become my favorite place in the world. I would like to live there full time and be a resident, but I am not in a position to get a permanent house or apartment as I would continue doing seasonal and staying in employee housing. I don't currently have a place I reside full time, and I get my mail at my sister's house in Charlotte, but maybe spend 1-2 weeks there a year. This is also where my storage unit is. What steps would I have to take to change my residency from North Carolina to Alaska? Would I have to obtain an physical address for a year or is a way to obtain residency while continuing to work seasonal jobs and staying at their housing? I am specifically interested in being considered a resident for tax purposes, but also to sever ties with North Carolina whose policies and culture I mo longer find myself agreeing with.

EDIT: unfortunately this time of year it is still far too covered in snow to do it safely.
