If you could fly to the south part of the state from Fairbanks for a solo 2-3 night getaway over Christmas, where would you go?

I'm recently out of a relationship and I have never been anywhere in the south part of AK except Anchorage.

I am envisioning flying to someplace like Juneau, renting a small, cozy cabin over Christmas, and just spending a couple nights by my lonesome.

Ideally there would be a bathtub involved. Any ideas out there?

Good 3-5 day backpacking treks?

Hello all. I’m looking for solid 3-5 day backpacking trips. We’re coming from Colorado for a week or so. 4 person group that are well experienced backpackers. 2 of us (myself and one other) have been to Alaska before and think August would be the best time since we would get a little darkness and chance of Aurora. We’re looking for a good trek: I spent a summer on the Kenai so I personally want to try another area (Denali) but we’re very open to any trips. We’d probably spend 2 weeks up there, one week hiking and another fishing or kayaking or some other activities. Thanks!

Spray foam insulating cisterns?

Hey there Alaskans, just popping over from Montana. I've read in multiple threads that a pretty standard Alaskan method for preventing water tanks/cisterns from freezing is coating them in 12" of spray foam. But I haven't been able to find any details on what foam is typically used and what the whole process is. Just wondering if anyone with experience would be willing to shed some light onto the details. Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated! Enjoy your winter up there!

Vital Records question

Does anyone know if you can walk in to the Vital Records office in Anchorage and request/buy a copy of your marriage certificate?

I spent 2 hours on hold today waiting for someone to hopefully answer to ask them, but no luck before they closed at 3p.

We ordered copies off of the LexisNexis site but that says it will take 2-3 weeks to even process before shipping.

Their site says LexisNexis is the most “expedient” option, but we are on a bit of a tight deadline due to a pending surgery date that we need to merge insurance for.

We’re on the KPenn, so I’d like to know before making the trip. Was curious if anyone had any idea.

We've got a mysteriously dead seal here in Haines, anyone else see something like this in their communities?

Here's a story I wrote for the Chilkat Valley News about a dead harbor seal that's missing most of it's head. The NOAA folks I talked too said they've seen this a few other times throughout the state, but don't know if it's happening pre- or post-mortem.

We've had a lot of speculation locally about what may have caused it, but I'd love to know if anyone else is seeing it.

Thoughts?

good carry-on backpack ???

hey guys i’m traveling to belize in january for 2 months. i’ve been looking online to buy a new carry-on backpack since my old osprey bag is too big for alaska airlines now (apparently they’re being super strict regarding dimensions for carry-ons recently).

according to alaska “The carry-on bag size limit for flights on all aircraft types is to 22'' x 14'' x 9'' - these dimensions include the wheels and handles”

i’m trying to pack LIGHT. obviously this and and a personal item. but i’m curious if anyone has any recommendations for a sturdy, good quality, carry-on backpack. price doesn’t matter i just need it to fit the dimensions and be somewhat comfortable since ill be trecking all over belize.

TIA!!

Might reach the right people - Alaskan Veteran

Back in 2019, I decided to take a break from life in Australia and traveled to Alaska for some time away. I brought along my camera, hoping to capture the beauty of the place. While I was there, I had the chance to meet a man named Paul W. We ended up chatting for a few hours and took some photos during our time together.

Eventually, I returned to Australia, and life went on, but I’ve always thought about those photos. They turned out pretty sick, and I can’t help but wonder if he’d like to see them someday. I don’t know much about him, but by chance, if he ever comes across this, I’d love to share these pics.

In 1946, a carcass washed ashore at Anchor Point, with skin and pointed teeth still attached. This--of all things--is what an Anchorage newspaper artist thought it looked like when alive. Because the artist, like many Alaskans, thought it was a prehistoric dinosaur previously sealed in ice.

Work-Related Question

A company from the Lower 48 has lost its contract with a major client in Alaska and is being bought out by another company. The company has cut the pay of all of its workers. Big pay cuts. My question: Would you take the pay cut or stop showing up for work until you got fired?

Can someone explain to me why multiple western, extremely rural boroughs in Alaska tend to vote for Democrats, despite the rural vote usually being heavily Republican in the US?
