Mason at Costco Tire Service Center

If you've had tire service at Costco, then you probably interacted with Mason. I don't know him personally but over the years he's been the mainstay of their tire/battery business, and he is truly a very good person that knows his stuff, and knows how to treat his coworkers and customers. Well, I noticed he recently left Costco and I heard he may have started his own auto service business. Does anyone know if he started a new business? If so please let the community know. Juneau could sure benefit from someone like Mason!

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone has any personal stories or memories about the day that three temsco AStar helicopters crashed in a single day under flat light conditions.

Open places to practice driving in snow?

Are there any places around town without curbs, street lights, or other obstacles that won’t get easily hit when practicing driving in snow?

Thanks!

JIRP?

Hey! I'm really interested in applying for the Juneau Icefield Research Program but I really want some advice or a review from someone who was actually in it. If anybody was in it, can you give me like the lowdown? How physically exerting is it? Would you say it was a lifechanging experience and would you do it again? Plus anything youd like to add. Thanks!

Things to do near Juneau this weekend

Hi, I am taking a long weekend trip with some friends to Juneau this weekend. We have a nice cozy BnB that we expect to spend quite a bit of time in given the weather. We are not afraid of some snow/rain and have a 4wd car to get around. We will try to do some hiking around Mendenhall Glacier if the weather permits. I have a few questions.

  1. What other outdoor things can we do while we are there? Good photo opportunities within diving distance? It is likely my friends first and last time to Alaska so I want to make a good impression.

  2. What are some good indoor activities to do? Museums, gold mine, etc.

  3. We arrive very early on Thanksgiving morning. Will there be any places to get groceries on Thursday or a nice breakfast/lunch thursday morning in town?

  4. Food recommendations where you locals eat?

Can I get a swimsuit in Juneau?

Are there any places in town to buy a swimsuit? It doesn't have to be nice; I just want to start swimming again.

Born in Juneau, bringing family to visit my childhood hometown March next. Suggestions?

Howdy! Been a long time. I have a couple of names and an address (house looks great on Trulia!) I want to check out, and of course am looking for suggestions for things to do with the family. I was just a kid, you see. Now I gotta figure things out.

We're fifties with a son in college. I know I want to visit Skagway real quick; I remember the museum and the glacier (which is a lot further away than it was back in the day).

What would you all recommend for our little group in March?

Thank you!

EDIT: I'm just realizing that Juneau gets 40+ inches of snow in March. Heh. Gonna be an adventure. Seems like mostly I remember the three sunny days in June or something.

Hateful people (lgbtq related)

Juneau usually feels very safe. Very live and let live but this weekend I was accosted twice - once alone and once with my partner. Have any other lgbtq folks noticed an uptick in fuckery or am I just very very unlucky?

Thinking of moving here

I'm with the Coast Guard and I've been stationed in the NYC area. My wife has always lived in NYC. Juneau looks like a guaranteed transfer if I put it on my list, and the city looks promising. I've previously been stationed in Valdez, and while the town was too small and isolated for my liking there were some things I loved about it. I loved the beauty and the layout of the town. I hate long commutes and traffic and loved that I could walk to work, Safeway, the library etc. While I know Juneau will be similar in isolation, even more so considering that unlike in Valdez I can't drive to Anchorage from Juneau. However, Juneau has a much larger population than Valdez (about 10x) and looks densely populated and walkable. My wife has never had a driver's licence and I think she could get a license, but we could stay a one-car family here. I assume driving here isn't too crazy for a new driver?

I see there's a bus system. Does it operate year-round? Is it pretty decent for getting around town?

This will be my wife's first transfer as a military spouse. One such issue military spouses face is having a hard time finding jobs where they go. Would it be easy for her to find work. If not I was thinking she could attend the college there.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Advice for an RN?

Experienced RN from the SW here. A few years in ICU, also some administrative/management + outpatient experience. My wife (mental health therapist with EMDR cert) and I are looking to move to a smaller town, gain a higher quality of life. Also it’s too hot here 🥵. We are investigating beautiful places where healthcare workers are in demand. -I’ve done some research, but I’m interested to know what the hospital / hc system is like to work for? -What’s your experience of quality of life? Ease of fitting in? -What’s the housing market like? (We already come from a place where the houses are crazy unaffordable, and rent is $2200+ for a mediocre 2bd).

Best flight tracker app

What is the most comprehensive app for tracking planes in Alaska. Not worried about the major airline jet flight tracking. Mostly interested in the small plane flight path and tracking info.

Tracking shipping barges from Seattle?

You've all ran into this issue before...you ordered something and it was shipped by USPS Ground Advantage, Parcelpool, UPS who then hands it off to USPS, etc and sits in Seattle/Kent and then eventually gets put on a barge and then tracking just says "In transit to next facility" for what seems like the next 2 weeks. So this leads me to my question...does anyone know the barge company, cargo ship, MMSI, that these packages get loaded on to? Generally I'm a patient person, but it would be nice to have a general idea of when a package might get delivered. Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: After doing some digging around AML's website and the help of /u/Sad_Candle7307 , here are some helpful links for people who might see this page in the future. With these 2 links, I found it was the best way to track the barges across Alaska.

Looking for work in Juneau

Hi everybody!

My partner was recently hired for a position in Juneau starting next month. I am planning on moving up with them in January, but would ideally like to secure a job ahead of time. I graduated last year with a B.S. in Management Information Systems and have experience with non-profit/customer service work. However I am also willing to explore opportunities that stray from my background, as long as conditions/pay are decent. For those who know the area, are there any organizations that you would recommend checking out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Mendenhall lake glacier boat/kayak/tour

Hi there, I will be visiting this upcoming week and I wonder if anyone knows companies/people that would rent kayaks/do tours this late in the season. Everything I found seems to be closed. Would love to come up close to the glacier.
