Club Lacrosse (why do titles have to be 20 characters??? 😭)

Hello so how would I start club lacrosse? I’m a ‘29 and have only played during spring at my school. I also play field hockey (not club). Does club go like all year round or something else?

Does anyone know if there are any online stores where I can buy runners like stx

Hi! Does anyone know if there are any online stores where I can buy runners like stx or gait? the ones they use for the lock pocket. I saw a guy doing a new string with a pair of these and i wanted to know if i could buy them somewhere to restring my stick

I am actually not sure if they're called leathers, because they're not actual leather, they are made with some kind of fabric. Does anyone know??? I've looked for them everywhere and i just cannot find them. I need to buy them online because I'm from Mexico and here you cannot find practically any lacrosse stores

Help getting my daughter to get past a metal block\self doubt

My daughter is a freshman in HS playing for the team, she has about 5 years experience with this team. They have all played together since about 5th grade or so. Recently she has been dealing with not being able to shoot the ball with any strength behind it. When watching her play, I can tell she is only giving about 25-50% effort throughout. I have asked her is she still really wants to play and if she enjoys the game still, which she answers yes she does.

The team is practicing 2x times a week in open practices, and my daughter goes to training 2-3 times outside of that to try and get better. The coach says she needs to get stronger, (which she does) but I believe that she is having a tough time getting out of her head. she has a tough time talking to other kids she doesn't know and has lots of worry about what they will say.

When someone tells her how to do something, she focuses on doing the exercise exactly the way she was told...ie.. place feet here, hold stick here, place hand here, elbow up....etc. this causes her to miss the catch or throw a weak shot, but if she is distracted and focusing on something else she performs great.

When she played soccer she would worry about how to dribble correctly and go very slowly to make sure it was the exact way the coach (me) said. After I realized this I told her to not worry about dribbling and just put the ball in the net, 100% turn around. Is there something along these lines I could do to help her with lacrosse...

Any help or feedback would be appreciated.

What Makes a Good Women's Lacrosse Stick?

Last month, we released the RC1 lacrosse stick to help decrease the barrier to entry into the sport. It's always been our intention to support and grow both men's and women's lacrosse. With that in mind, we're eager to start the design process for a women's stick to minimize the time between releases.

We'd love to hear from the community:

  • What makes a good women's lacrosse stick?
  • Which heads are considered the best, and why?
  • Is a 10-degree shaft necessary for optimal performance?
  • What's the preferred pocket type: traditional, mesh, or Armor Mesh?

Your insights will help us create a stick that meets the needs of players at all levels.

Goggles for low bridge face type?

I purchased STX lacrosse goggles from Amazon and it turns out they don't fit my girlfriend's face. She is from China and has a low bridge face. Is there a product which would be a better fit for her facetype? Thanks very much.

Current College Athletes (United States) Needed for Study

I have my master's degree in sport and exercise psychology, and I am a doctoral student in the clinical psychology program (PsyD) at Northern Arizona University. I am in the process of completing my dissertation/clinical research project, which is investigating the conflict and acceptance between rookie and veteran college athletes. This project has been approved by Northern Arizona University’s IRB (Project Number: 2197486-2).

Participants will be asked to complete an online survey that will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey includes questions about your experiences with the levels of acceptance experienced with teammates, conflict with teammates, as well as questions about the participant’s demographic information and background. All responses will be kept confidential and anonymous.

Armour Mesh in Gait draw M head question

I just got the Gait Draw-M and i was wondering how the armour mesh does in it and does it give an advantage or take away from the stick on draw? I know it will give me a better pocket. Just concerned if the stringing by Gait gives any advantage and if i replace it with armour mesh it will take away from the stick. Thanks for comments

Help for my Freshman Goaltender from a concerned dad...

My daughter was trust into the net at the middle of last season, her first as a high school player. Sounds like the coach is hoping for the next 3 year starting goalkeeper. My daughter has been pretty discouraged by her level of play and the defense supporting her has been pretty soft, with lots of goals scored. What can I do to work with her in the off-season, not only to better her level of play but also build her confidence and make her less timid/scared in the cage? I played men's in high school and some college as a defensemen, so I know the basics, though women's rules are quite different. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Advice for a newish college player

Hey yall!

I’m a rising junior at a college who’s short on players this year (and is therefore pulling new players from the existing student body). I’m going to be playing this year for the team and was hoping to get some advice.

I used to play lax when I was 12-14, but never took it too seriously. I played D and mid but never attack. I vaguely remember rules and stick handling but definitely am a bit foggy. I’m very athletic and strong— currently a powerlifter— and a pretty quick learner.

I’ve been using a stick again this summer trying to get back into the swing of things and passing is fine but my catching is pretty 50/50 right now. Can anyone recommend me some drills or tips to suck less at catching so I don’t embarrass myself lol? Any other advice about getting back into lax would be appreciated. Thanks y’all! ☺️

Catching advice for wall ball/ sweet spot

I have been working on some summer training (wall ball) and when I catch I feel like it is hitting the middle of the head rather than the sweet spot, causing the pocket to disappear and be less predictable when cradling. My current head is a STX one that I adjusted the strings for the sweet spot (the factory stringing did not have one) and I am not sure how I can improve my catching/ change the strings.

Officials stick check question

When inspecting for a legal pocket, officials ensure that the ball moves freely from the ball stop and exits the pocket.

On the back side of the pocket, is it sufficient for the ball to merely exit the pocket, or must it also need to move freely backwards to the neck of the stick, akin to the requirement on the front side?

With modern heads such as the Gait Whip and Maverik Accent Pro featuring aggressive sloping sidewalls, it is challenging to imagine many setups where the ball would pass the requirement of freely moving backward on the pocket's back side.

Transferring college for lax?

This may just be hypothetical but I’d like to get it sorted sooner rather than later

Starting my first season of college play, though unlikely my future dream goal is to play for the women’s usa lax or aupro team after college. Unfortunately if I stay where I’m at I don’t think that’s realistic as I’m at a small D1 club school in the West. They’re decent and made it to nationals in the spring but pretty much no one outside of my state knows they exist.

I may play my first year and decide that higher level isn’t for me but as of right now I believe I can do those dream goals and would like to put myself in a position to have them available for me. I would probably have to transfer to a different college where it’s sanctioned, maybe D2 or D1. I’m a goalie so that might make it a bit easier?? Just due to the scarcity of the position.

I’m just wondering what I should be doing in the meantime to make the transfer possible and what my general timeline would look like. I’m wanting to know what benchmarks I should be hitting and at what time this next year/s so I don’t leave it till last minute and make it impossible.

I’m guessing I should get film from my games this year and piece them together with stats and of course get good grades. Is there recruiting sites for college players I should put myself on or should I reach out to colleges early? Should I be doing certain training in addition to whatever I do for my team? Should I look to transfer within the first year or wait a few?

Everything with college play is all so new to me and since it’s only club at my school there’s no athletic director/ similar staff I can meet with to help figure out my future moves. If you’ve ever gone through this yourself or know your way around this any advice or links to resources would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much!

Maverik Ascent Pro???

I play middie in high school and I currently have the Nike Lunar 2 lacrosse stick but my coach says that I should look into finding a more advanced stick. I have been trying to do as much research as possible to find the right stick and have been borrowing my coaches variety of team sticks to experiment with. I am trying to find a stick with the most ball control as possible. My current favorite one that I have tried out was the Maverik Ascent. When I researched it I found the Maverik Ascent Pro with the hex pocket and was wondering if that would be a better fit for me then the Ascent or Ascent+. Any suggestions (even about different brands) would be greatly appreciated.

Coaches and Officials - Funny and cringe sideline comments

As a coach or official, what are the best/worst comments you've heard from parents on sidelines during a game?

My most common:

"Take it to goal!" Parents, I know you want to see your daughter score, but we are trying to run a play.

"Call it both ways ref!"

"How is that a penalty?"

"Moving pick!" Parents, moving picks are not illegal.

Funny:

On an obvious flop "When did LeBron start playing women's lacrosse?" This one actually made the ref start laughing.

"Wheels!" John, your daughter has been playing for 40 minutes straight in 98-degree weather, she has no wheels left.

"Fast break, go to goal!" Dave, it's on our side of the field, it's not a fast break, and your daughter is playing defense.

"What the H*** is shooting space?"

Officials Question - How would you handle Fouls committed on purpose?

Situation - This past weekend tournament - HS A Bracket. Running clock. Close game. Player on opposing team earns a well-deserved yellow card for Slashing. Whistle start. Opposing coach calls out a defensive play for what I assume is a man down defensive scheme.

The opposing team gets a 3 second violation penalty. Free position at the 12m. We begin again with our offensive set based on man up. Whistle; another 3 second violation. Free position at the 12m. Start again, and yes, a third three second violation by the defense. Each reset taking up a full 15 to 30 seconds to set up and restart. Burned through the two-minute yellow card. I didn't realize what the coach was doing until the third violation and seeing the yellow card released. On the officials' side, this should be a held flag to not disadvantage the attacking team, I believe, based on the official's manual. Officials' insight is welcomed. We lost the game 5-4, so a frustrating situation.

In addition, the timer should be tracking the full two minutes on a stopwatch with a stop at whistle fouls, correct? "Elapsed playing time" This is my understanding based on the official's manual. I've never seen this strategy by a coach. The yellow card was released after 2 minutes of running game clock instead of a real two minutes of actual "elapsed playing time". Was the coach just taking advantage of a weak timer?

What's to stop a coach from doing this to run the clock out and end a game while on defense with a running clock? Held flag I assume, but I welcome feedback.

New women's lacrosse stick?

My daughter is looking for a new stick/ stick head and I found a few that seem promising. There is a gait apex head that is gently used for $180 and a new Infinity for $150 (complete stick), does it make sense to pay the extra $30 for the gait head over the complete stick? How much better is it and does it even make sense to be looking at gait as she is a defensive player looking to move more midfield? Additionally, there is a womens Whip 1 for sale as it is the older version for $160 but I have heard that is more of an attack stick but am unsure what the difference truly is between attack vs midfield sticks.

Is it worth getting a new lacrosse stick?

My daughter is a going to be a sophomore in high school and has been playing lacrosse for 2 years (8th grade and 9th). She has a pretty beginner to intermediate stick but has been complaining that the head/ pocket does not work well. It is a STX stick that was part of one of the beginner packs so I am unsure of the proper name. Is there any recommendations for a stick/ stick head that isn't super expensive as she will be continuing for high school but not planning on playing in college. We have tried a few like the EDC infinity and the Gait Apex but they are pretty expensive and looking for something a little cheaper. She plays defense but hoping to move more into midfield.

How late is too late for recruiting?

I am currently going into my junior year of high school next year. I just want to know, how late is too late for recruiting, typically? Would the summer before my senior year be too late to start sending tapes/filling out questionnaires?

Bad Officiating - What do you do?

I was watching my daughter’s team play in a youth tournament today, and the poor officiating was unbearable. Our entire sideline was commenting loudly throughout to the officials about the repeated bad calls. Even the opposing team’s parents agreed the refs were shite. One parent commented the refs were purposely not making calls for our team out of spite for all the jawing we were doing.

At one point I lost my composure. I didn’t curse but yelled “flop” after a girl went down with what was a legitimate injury. That was psycho on my part. I kept asking myself what the hell is wrong with me?

After the game I felt embarrassed. I really don’t care about the score- I just care about the girls getting treated fairly so that they have an opportunity to realize the benefit of all the hard work they put in. It frustrates me when refs take over the game and take that away from them. I’m normally chill but wondering what got into me. What do you do when your girls are getting jobbed by the refs?

I vowed to keep my mouth shut from now on- its pointless to make comments on how godawful a ref may be, all I can accomplish is making an ass of myself. If that feeling ever creeps in again, I will just take a walk.

And for the refs here, do you care about what you are doing when its obvious you are screwing up when you keep hearing comments and know they are right?

When my daughter finishes playing I have always planned to become a ref- just because I can’t bear to see such inconsistent and awful officiating. All the girls deserve better.

It’s time to end “Diving” aka Embellishment - Stop The Flop

Over the course of the past season we have seen an uptick in what the NHL calls “diving”. Young girls are being taught to flop on the ground anytime someone gets near them. This needs to be addressed at all levels of the sport before the sport becomes FIFA soccer. First offense is a 3 minute penalty, the 2nd is a 5 minute and mandatory ejection. Yes it’s harsh, but these floppers are making a mockery of the sport. Stop the flop.

How hard is it to do D3 lacrosse? Please be honest

I am a HS sophomore currently and have been playing lacrosse off and on for ~3 years now. If I want to go D3 with lacrosse, what are my chances? I wouldn’t say I’m terrible, but I’m definitely not where I want to be. If I really worked at it, could I maybe make it onto a D3 team? I don’t wanna go D1 or D2; I just want to do the sport but not as competitively as those divisions. Any thoughts/answers?
