lets say you're sick of feeling like the over paid red headed step child of wildland fire. Are there any *real* wildland fire medic jobs out there?
I’m a college freshman at a very academic school, and I want to spend this summer doing something completely out of the ordinary. I spend a lot of my time outdoors, and I'd like to continue doing that if possible. I've been looking into working as a wildland firefighter. I have a WFR and CPR/AED, nothing else. I am from California and could stay in Tahoe area, but anywhere else would need housing.
Does anyone know if there are any summer opportunities for this as someone relatively inexperienced? Preferably paid but I'm down to be unpaid. I am eager to learn, and I want to have an interesting summer.
If anyone has any other advice about things I could do this summer, that would also be helpful.
I normally have Tuesday/Wednesday off, so on Christmas, I would get paid for 8 hours on Wednesday 25th and get Monday 23rd off.
This year, I’m on an assignment. My travel day home is Tuesday 24th and then I have three days of R&R. Do I just not get an extra day off for Xmas this year since I’ll be on assignment all the days I could take off for Xmas? I have a feeling that’s the case, but please let me know.
Weird situation. Thanks for your help in advance.
I'm checking the status of one of my applications and the status box of where I attached my SF-50 says "Pending retrieval" where as my resume says "Processed". Will this affect my chance of being hired at all?
From our meetings today we're hearing that the house may have some issues. (Go figure) Anyway, Start calling house leadership and tell them to fix Wildland Firefighters pay in the CR.. link below is house leadership. Look up there #s and hammer down!
Kinda going through the wringer right now. My insurance is about to lapse after layoff. Wondering if any one knows good services for first responders on the low low. Appreciate you folks

Make the phones ring,.
Tell speaker Johnson to put the permanent Wildland firefighter payfex into the next CR.
Hey guys I'm (30f) going to be doing the pack test for the first time Friday, I'm going in for wildland EMT not actual line work.
I still need a red card for the company I will be working with though.
I'm pretty healthy but I'm also a relatively small woman 5'4 130 lbs. Ive been building up endurance with weighted packs and doing the 3 miles in under 44 mins consistently but I'm getting some pretty nasty hip and shin pain that's stopping me short when I put on 45 lbs (35 and under is no issue)
Any tips or just muscle through it?
Anyone have a timeline for interest checks/TJOs for lower perm GS positions this round of fire hire in R4? Got referred but haven't heard anything other than that. Wanted to see if these positions/duty stations have had their selections or not already. Thanks!
Is it done or are some forests still hiring 4’s?
Have seen opposing info on this. I got referrals from every agency besides FS and I used the same resume for all of them so I don't think I would've gotten caught up in the system. If anybody has a date that would be great, thanks.
Hi, I’m a 19M aspiring to become a park ranger, but I’m trying to figure out what to do during the offseason. I’ve heard a lot of people recommend wildland firefighting as a complementary job, and I’m very interested in exploring it. At the same time, I’ve been considering a more traditional municipal firefighter position and am torn between the two options.
My main questions are:
Can I balance both careers? Is it realistic to work as a park ranger and a wildland firefighter, or would the schedules conflict too much?
Which lifestyle fits better? For those who’ve worked in wildland firefighting or normal firefighting, which path do you think would better align with the ranger lifestyle?
Growth and compatibility: Are there benefits to combining wildland firefighting with a ranger career that I might not be aware of? Or would a normal firefighting role provide better stability and balance overall?
Any advice from those who’ve been in either role—or both—would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your insight!
I’m 23 and have worked some sales jobs on the east coast since getting out of school. Thinking about applying for next summer because I need something more fulfilling than pushing products that I don’t care about. What do I need to know if I want to get into this? I have a good idea about how strenuous the work is but what else should I know? Living situations, which agency to apply for, will I need a car, conditioning standards, what to do in the winter, does experience make up for the lack of pay etc.
Any info or insight would be appreciated
i was on a OC/Ad crew in norcal just got laid off do i qualify for unemployment?
I applied for a gs3 forestry tech job received two emails regarding an interest check about 10 days ago. I applied stating I was still interested in the position. How long does it usually take to hear back?
If anyone happens to know one, please please share 🙏 anything under than $400 would make it hurt less lol
Hi all, sorry for what might be a dumb and repetitive question but I applied for temp GS-3 positions mainly with the FS and I’m wondering what I could do to make my hiring chances better. Should I take wildland courses online and call duty stations that I’m interested in and tell them that I got the cert or just wait and hope for calls back? Thanks

I started applying on USA jobs in October and all of them are still reviewing apps and I haven’t got emails saying I’m referred or denied yet. I did the 4 wildland firefighting courses so hopefully that helps get my name up on the list.
I’ve also talked to probably 20 crew bosses or so on the phone but they told me it’s basically worthless talking to them until I have been referred.
Most of these jobs are with the nps and usfs for gs3. Thanks
I join a wildfire crew mid January ish. I just realized alot of the "must have" brands are made to order only (nicks and whites) silly me. I will admit I prefer to buy things once and be done with it but due to time constraints I do not think that is currently possible. I have went through the others post (before you say read what other people have said). I do have an arch so I am under the impression I will enjoy the logger style more. If I want to pursue future seasons I def think I will invest in a pair of nicks or whites. I have never really been one to get blisters (walked barefoot alot growing up).
I am currently considering the following shoes.
Zamberlan- 5020 Extinguisher 2 WLF
