Note from the mod: I don't expect this to become an active community. /r/Vandwellers is a better place for active discussion and sharing. I created this subreddit as a dedicated place for information on the very niche topic of living in plugin hybrids (mostly the Chevy Volt). If you have any information you think others might benefit from, please submit it!

Today GM withdrew their support from Trump’s plan to roll back auto emissions in California and several other states. The same day Trump’s election loss became blatantly obvious to most of his supporters. Way to go GM, taking a stand for the environment. I’m being fecetious. You have a lot of work to do if you want to be recognized as a leader on environmental issues.
I'm looking to get a Volt, Prius, or Rav 4 Hybrid to suit my desire for a comfortable dwelling experience.
The Volt is super appealing, but I'm thinking it's only superior to the Prius for dwelling if you're able to keep the battery topped up by plugging in. So, if you're on a cross-country road trip (or even a camping trip) and you don't feel like parking somewhere with an electrical outlet, I figure the battery will be mostly dead? So to run the climate control overnight, the combustion engine will constantly be kicking on and off, which is exactly what the Prius does, am I right?
I understand that the Volt is a sexier vehicle than the Prius for driving, and if you have a short commute so you can take advantage of the all-electric mode.
But is it any better than a Prius for dwelling? I'm not sure how the first gen compares in size, but the second gen is cramped, from what I've heard.
EDIT: "Hold mode" sealed the deal--you can preserve the battery while driving on gasoline and then run off the battery over night. I got a Volt! First Gen. I look forward to my future posts in this sub!
Hi r/VoltDwellers!
Someone stole the catalytic converter out of my prius so I am in the market for a new car and seriously considering a used Volt. They seem to be good for around town on electric and also for road trips using gas. I surf a few times a week and was able to fit my 7' board easily inside my prius.
Would the Volt have enough space inside to fit a 7' board without having to put down the passenger seat? I've seen from Youtube videos that the trunk is a slightly odd shape, is this ever a problem or it can still store enough cargo? Seems like everyone on this subreddit camps a lot so you would know. Thanks for any advice!
So after some research and a little diy I now have window covers made out of double foil wrap and covered with a black fabric. They all seem to stay in by just pushing them into the window edges except... the back window.
The back window I intended to hold it up with suction hooks. It worked fine last week however now that im on my road trip the temperature dropped them dont seem to be holding.
How do you guys keep your back window screen up? ( the front only stays up because of the sun visors- so if you have tips for that I'd love to hear them as well )
Please note that I'm in ontario and already on the road. :)
Hi All,
I'm thinking about getting a PHEV and will be spending a decent amount of time car camping in super hot/super cold climates. I've done this in my old 2007 Prius but it just doesn't have the battery capacity to keep the heat/air running all night.
The Gen 2 Volt seems perfect except for these posts that say the back can't fit someone taller than 5' 8"... this seems hard for me to believe so I just want to confirm. I see other posts from larger people saying they could fit just fine. I'm 6' 2" and I could lay straight in the back of my old Prius.
So I guess my question is this: With the back seats down and front seats pulled fully to the front, plus some padding to keep your head up, what is the full length of the back area of the car? Could someone 6' 2" and their relatively small wife both fit into the back?
Howdy!
I've heard great things about the VoltScreen and VoltShelf from this website, but apparently he also sells foldable mattresses for the back of both Gen I and II Volts. I am very interested in buying one. Has anyone bought one of these and if so, can I get a review on it? Is it worth it vs a foam pad + inflateable camping mattress?
Thanks!
One thing I love about the prius: you don't need to push the passenger seat up at all to have enough room to sleep. This makes stealth dwelling easy, as all you need is a black curtain behind the front row.
Does the volt have enough room to do that?
Hello! I’m going on a little 3 day road trip this weekend and I would like to be comfortable, I’ve seen images of people folding the seats flat but I can’t seem to find a latch or anything on how to remove the seat bottoms, anyone know how to do it?

Hello everyone, I'm going to be living in my Volt soon and hope to share my experiences as I start my new life living in my car.
Right now I'm trying to decide between a Dometic fridge or just use an ice chest. Has anyone found one that fits nicely behind the passenger seat and can support part of the bed?
I'm currently in a prius, but I'm looking at the volt. Can anyone explain key differences pros/cons between the two
What are your must haves for living in your volt? Won't get my volt for a year or so, but I'm starting to prepare. Already got a solar lighting system, and solar flashlight, solar radio, zero degree sleeping bag, and car chargers for my phone and laptop.
So, I see there are roof racks available. What's to stop me from mounting a full blown house roof type solar panel up there, running the 12v output from that to an inverter, then plugging my volt 110v charging cable into the inverter? (And the other end into the Volt).
Will the Volt accept the charge if it's receiving less current than normal, or no? I've got this unfolding 3-panel rooftop array in mind, so the total wattage using 270 watt panels could be as much as 810 watts (peak).
There's 340 watt single panels available now apparently, so I could make a 1kw+ array, I just don't know for sure if it would fit on the roof or not.
I see a lot of these on Amazon from companies like RoadPro, Zeto and Zone Tech. I have a Zone Tech one I use with a wall adapter at home just because it uses far field IR heating which I have read is more durable than resistive wires. So far so good. I was tired of regular electric blankets crapping out on me after a few weeks.
It apparently pulls 55 watts which doesn't seem like it should cause any problems. Will the 110v NEMA->JVC112 adapter be enough to keep up with that draw?
I have been living in my volt and used the AC all night several times. I think the condensation has caused smells/stink in the vents. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you fix it?
I am currently using some Velcro and felt, but it doesn't look particularly great. I found out that you can get adhesive metal circles and was considering sewing magnets to the felt and adhering the metal circles to the outline of the rear window. That way it would snap into place. I think this is my best idea yet.
Any other ideas? What do you all do?
I just checked back here. Great to see there was activity in my absence.
I just picked up a CPO 2014 base with nav. WTF have I done?
It is a god damn shame that this sub is so dead. We should just create a subreddit that's for car dwellers in general?
