Was scrolling and got a post from here next to an ad about buying a house... Thought it was funny enough to share...
I parked on a residential road that backs up to some apartments where I saw a ton of other cars parked, and was there for maybe 30 minutes on my phone when I noticed this lady walking her dog back and forth past my car. She then stood next to my car while on the phone with someone (I couldn’t hear, but I didn’t want it to be the cops so I decided to grab my keys but had trouble finding them at first), proceeded to take two pictures, WITH HER FLASH ON, of my car, then went into the back door of the close by apartment. Once I finally found the keys I decided to gtfo I looked over, and sure as hell she was peeking thru the blinds watching me. For a quick laugh since I never go in that area anyways I flashed my phone flashlight back at her and she quickly closed the blinds and scurried off, lmao.
I understand being suspicious, and it’s cold so I’m in a big jacket and a beanie but I was genuinely only parked there for 30 minutes tops before she started taking photos of me. Some people man.
Moved in 01 January 2018, moved out 14 February 2023, and now I'm thinking about selling it, I'm not sure if I'll gut the interior prior to selling it...
I’m about a month in and I think I’m getting the hang of this. Gonna buy a car safe heater soon, just got a can opener, and I’m stocked up on chips and nonperishables. Anybody with more experience and tips, please throw any helpful advice my way. Hope everyone is doing well and staying warm!
It shouldn't be obvious. I don't actually know that they're thinking that but i get a different reaction now than when I had a place.
Anyone around the canyon lake/new braunfels Texas area? If so, any safe camping spots around? The police here are VERY active and it’s tough to find a place to relax when you’re waiting on a spotlight and a tap. You know? We are just trying our best to snuggle in and sleep without unnecessary crap.
Right now, I've been eating a lot of chia seed pudding.
I have a portable blender. I add 2 cups of coconut milk, honey, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to it, blend, and then pour that into a big plastic bag. I add 1/2 c of chia seeds, mix it up, and let it sit.
Then bam! My favorite snack. Just add fruit.
Has anyone else found easy things to make like this?
On November 23 of this year just about a week ago marked my one year anniversary living in a vehicle. Last year I started living in my Camaro right on Thanksgiving. I lived in that car open till the end of June this year. I got my minivan Then and now I currently live in my minivan. It’s been a year full of learning and adventure. There were good times and some bad. I made it through the Houston summer when it was really hot when I thought there was no way I would ever be able to survive a summer living in a vehicle. And while I’m still learning about this lifestyle, I keep trying to upgrade my life in this little tiny home on wheels. So with one year down here’s to year two or shall I just call it chapter 2 well whatever I call it. I’m hoping it’ll be a good one. Best wishes to everyone on their travels over the holidays. Stay safe. Stay warm or cool if you’re here in Houston cause even though it’s a little cool, it’ll get hot again lol. Stay safe.
The photo in this post I took a few weeks ago at a new spot that I really like to chill out at. The first time I went there was during the day and I got some pretty cool pictures. I was heading out towards my spot for the night and I decided to stop by here And put my window blinds up and just get myself ready for night mode. So before I left, I opened up the back hatch of my van and sat there for a little bit, and I snapped some of these photos. This is one of them. It’s my favorite because it kind of shows the different colors and the lights from the street and the building and the lake and all that good stuff. And although this is right in the middle of the city, it really is a nice peaceful place to just sit back and relax.
The four months I lived in my Van was I was between jobs but I see here there is a big variety of reasons. Please pick what best fits you.
This happed at about 10:35pm at the Park and Ride at College Ave near Milwaukee/Franklin Wi. I took off in case the tank were to explode. Please be safe!
I usually lower my windows a bit to minimize condensation. Rain guards allow me to get away with it on wet days, and my double sleeping bags help me sleep through cold temperatures. The fresh air is also welcome. But when I get stuck with a combination of 20-something degrees AND significant wind, I throw in the towel and leave the windows up. You?
they're fairly cheap and help so much when sleeping at night, obviously prioritize a sleeping bag and winter clothes first but I don't ever see people suggest these so I figured I'd point it out
My husband and are are going to be living in our car in a few days with our dog until we can find her a foster. I apologize if this is a mess to read, I’m not sure how to make this post or what the right questions to ask would be. Tbh, we don’t know the first thing living in a car and this isn’t by choice. Thankfully our state has a safe park program so we should have places we’re safe to be. We definitely want privacy screens. We’re going to look on YouTube to see if there is a way we can make them ourselves, especially since money is super tight. We have a Nissan Sentra, so not super huge for three people sized beings. Is there a way to somehow open up space? We’re going to get a small camping stove or make good use of microwaves in gas stations. I’m going to do a deep dive in this subreddit tonight to hopefully get more knowledge on this, but if there’s any tips or bits of knowledge you can offer, that would be greatly appreciated! 🙏
I'm in the SW of the US. But wondering bout not just here, how is this looked at in other places. I've never been just.... WTF...
So is it same as asking for spare change, is it considered rude or invasion of whatever privacy you have out in public? If someone comes up in a very nice, none threatening manner & says "Hi, I have jumper cables anyone able to give a jump?" There's 100 ways to ask. I mean, it's not going into a restaurant while someone is eating. It's in a parking lot where a major thing that the people have in common is they came on some mode of transportation. Years ago, when had a dead battery I'd broke out the cables and 1st person I seen wouldn't even lemme finish asking them. They'd put up the pointer finger signaling "one minute, I'll be right there." As long as I has cables if in a populated area, getting a jump start took no longer than 5 minutes.
Now, tables turned. If I see someone that needs help as in you can hear the clicking when they turn the key. I have always approached seeing if they need a jump. Last Wednesday night at a gas station helped two lady's change a tire then had to jump bcof the length of time sitting there with lights on.
So, this morning (I stayed at a M6 last night) I pack up my home, then clickclickclick. Shit, my battery dead.( I actually just ordered a jump pack like 2-3 days ago too. ) I knew right away to thro up the universal sign indicating a jump is needed. Hood up, cables dug up from the bottom of God knows where, and placed visibly. I didn't ask 1st person. But I did the 2nd and the stink face I got you'd think I'd ask... nvm.. So after bout the 7th, 8th, 9th, I stopped asking. Then it dawned on me, I bet I have a bougie cave diving, a cliff hanging friend. So fast to the mirror & no such luck. By them I'm thinking, ok someone will see and won't feel whatever those people ran off for, and will inquire if I need a jump.
And then..... 🦗 🦗
🦗 🦗 Crickets... I'm still trying to get a jump. Let's see, that was at 10am. It's now 3:15pm (MST). I very gotten the "no understand you" reply. I think I either got offended drugs or some tang. A lady came up and said something. I asked to repeat a couple time cuz shes whispering it. Soi just said no and asked if she had a good car battery I could borrow for a min. She laughed walking away and said something again. Idk.. oh one guy said it's not his car.
Have any of you had this much trouble even if you had the cables? If you see someone needing a jump what do you do? And why? And if in my shoes right now, what would you do? You have no friends or family. I have a call out to a co worker that can cone later tonight. Theres no wrong answer, I appreciate the ideas. I don't want to spend last of funds til payday calling a tow truck and the principal of it. I don't have roadside anymore, & I know I'll get it back on. The ex took em off to save $7 or $11.
I can't pop the clutch or I'd been gone...
It's a '04 Jeep Automatic.
My next idea is that I have a couple white poster boards that I'll break one out & with a sharpie write "in need of a jump please. "
Hopefully this makes sense, it's cold and I'm shaking...
G-Luck everyone, please be safe..
Edit/Update!
👍🙏 My wheels are spinning. And my heater?..... it's a heating....
My co-worker surprised me. When he said later tonight I figured..... LATER tonight...
He pulled up right before the sun ducked out. Hung out to lemme run it for a lil bit and to shut it down for a while to test a restart. I'm telling ya Bella (my Jeep) just needed a spark, she's at that age. Kinda like the doods who pop a nitro to kick start their heart again...
So, myself, Malichi (my pup), & Bella thanks everyone for the great positive encouragement that I didn't really know I needed. G-Luck everyone out there & please be Kinda safe ✌️
Have any of you joined a community college and registered for a gym class so you can take showers? Also would you go to their library and use the internet? Thank you for your response!
When my family and I moved to this community, we were excited to start fresh and work toward a brighter future. I had just started a new job to support us us while planning to build a small business to create long-term stability for my kids. But in an instant, everything changed.
I was violently attacked, leaving me with a broken back and unable to work. To make matters worse, My kids witnessed the attack, we were homeless earlier this year, and the emotional toll it’s taken on them has been devastating. Since then, we’ve faced harassment from individuals tied to the attacker, and we’re now being forced out of our home despite being the victims.
It’s hard to put into words how overwhelming this all feels. As a parent, you just want to shield your kids from harm, but right now, I’m struggling to give them the safety and stability they deserve. What gives me hope is knowing that there are good people out there who care.
Our goal is simple: to restart the business that was meant to provide for my family’s future. So I’m able to secure safe housing and cover basic expenses while I recover. Any and every kind gesture, whether it’s sharing our story or sending words of encouragement, reminds us that we’re not alone in this.
Thank you for taking the time to hear our story. Your support—big or small—means more to us than I can express.
Hey guys I have been living in my jeep now for a couple of months now at a friends apartment complex parking lot and even though i have been getting staying only at night and getting away with it i feel like they are starting to pick up on it. Ive been keeping my eyes open and so far my other 2 options that ive seen are an over night park and ride parking lot and maybe a hospital parking lot those seem like my only 2 safe options so far in the area im in. I was wondering if anyone had experiences with any of these 2 areas or could give me some advice on good parking spots?
Do any on you live in Los Angeles and think it’s good to live in the car in this city? I do have a part time job so I will have income. I’m just thinking about moving to have a peace of mind cuz the person I live with is mentally unstable and I don’t want them to do stuff to me. This person is related to me. Thank you!
Update on : ( 33 ) never made anything of myself or done anything with my life .
Hey everyone !!! I know it’s been a weekish since I updated but thank you everything, all the comments, all the tips and blatant support..
So here are the main things that happened when getting here ..
Driving up here was NUTS.. the roads went to an incline so steeeep for like hours lol .. crazy .. the mountains are BEAUTIFUL..
The moment I got here it was 3:50 and I called the temp agency in Colorado to let them know I got in and are probably going to stop by the next day when she said … “ honey , if you can make it here before we close, you can start work the next morning ..
After 14 hours of driving and smelling with dirty clothes on I made it to the agency with 20 minutes to spare and she helped with my application and got me work the next morning and have been working every day since ( except the weekend ).
I stayed in my car the first few nights until the cold became unbearable and am now in a 46 dollar dorm here in Pueblo..
30 days after update:
Update: (33) Never made anything of myself .
Hey guys! For all of you sending me dm’s on my banned pf I just wanna say IM SORRY I GOT BANNED ON REDDIT😭😭.
But on good news I really wanna thank all of you for the support and let you guys know how things are going.
As y’all know I joined a temp agency and immediately began work in Colorado .
I stayed in my car in the cold till I saved up 800 . Did I mention it’s COLD AF IN COLORADO? Lmao lol I had
400 for food and gas and 400 for investing .
For past 6 years of making nothing of myself I had been watching and learning how to trade and reading charts for the stock market and put in 300 in trading and turned it into 780.00 in one day.
Been trading ever since but since I’m still new I kinda lost it all 🤣 lmao.
Back in Texas for the holidays and than going back and trying it out all over again .
You guys are the real ones for staying with my journey. Ily fr ..
Oh and if I put my cash app stuff would that be too needy or like pathetic in y’all’s opinion?
I had one guy tell me to dm him my cash app after we spoke for a while and he gave me 200+ for supplies and told me to put my cash app info on here for ppl to donate but sorta seems like taking advantage imo. What do you guys think?
I've been living out of a Kia Soul for a month now and it's been an incredible experience, difficulties and all. I find I have to live my life with more intention; careful where I place things, keeping the vehicle inside clean, figuring out where I'm parking, cooking outdoors in parks. I feel more engaged with life, unlike when I was housed where I would just piss away the days that I wasn't working staring at a screen. I really feel like I'm "in" the world.
Most people I tell that I'm doing it have the canned reaciton of "ohh, really? are you ok? that sucks", but the people that REALLY know me are like "shit yeah! that's so you!".
I've realized I create my own happiness; it isn't what I'm sleeping in or what covers my body, it's me.
What a life we lead.
[edit] Here's a photo of my basic setup for those interested.
Hello everyone. I'm currently unemployed and have $6,000 saved, and I'll be heading to LA in two weeks from Canada. I understand that LA might not be the easiest place for me right now, but I was able to find a very affordable flight.
A bit about my background: I'm a US citizen, I do have an SSN, and I have 5 years of experience in software engineering. My goal is to stretch that $6k as long as possible while I'll be looking for a job.
I’ll be arriving with just my laptop and some hiking gear, so I’m prepared to sleep outdoors. The challenge is that I can't rent a room without a job, and I can't secure a job without an address. I’m thinking of renting a business PO box as my physical address and staying outside until I find a car. I plan to search Craigslist for a car under $4,000 to live in while job hunting. I have some mechanical skills, so I’m hoping to find something decent.
I'm wondering if I should consider leaving to nearby cities right off the bat or stick it out in LA? Are there any affordable housing options while I’m searching for a car, or should I be prepared to sleep out in the streets for a bit?
I'm not sure how feasible this plan is. What do you think? How would you approach this situation?
I just wanted to say that I'm really grateful that I stumbled on this Reddit community. I didn't know it existed. I found the people here to be mostly supportive. There was one jerk who said I wasn't intelligent enough intelligent enough to accept advice when his advice was crap and told me to get my s*** together cuz he thought I wasn't car dwelling correctly nothing like kicking somebody when they're already down right! Rather than engaging I just blocked him. But overall I found people here to be helpful and supportive and I hope everybody's staying safe and warm enough and if you enjoy this lifestyle I say more power to you! For me it's not a lifestyle that would be able to enjoy your maintain for a long period of time. I'm grateful that I've had my car to get me through this time because of meant being able to keep my dog. I'm hopeful that I will be able to get into my place on December 10th fingers crossed if not I learned some skills to be able to get myself through a little bit longer if I have to. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving stay safe stay warm!
It’s real easy when something goes wrong to have it all start to tumble and fall and go that way. I used to think that there was somebody fucking with me, but if there is anybody fucking with me, they’re pretty good and they know me pretty well because I don’t see it coming so many times.
Except lately I’ve been able to see it coming and I’ve been able to find these workarounds with the car and with my income. My doctor approved another six weeks of disability and the car is running better because I actually put coolant in it and have never done that since I owned the car and never checked it and I guess nobody else checked it when I brought it to the shop three times.
I don’t want to live in my car for much longer, but if I have to live in it for just a little longer, I’m gonna make it more comfortable.
I took out the passenger seat. I have a Honda Accord four-door sedan and I took out the back full down seat too. It’s actually a seat back anyway now I have enough room to put two small Ottomans that could hold up a hard mattress or a foam bed topper And I’ll have a proper place to sleep. Except for the one issue I keep having is how much the city that I live near does not like people sleeping in their cars.
It sucks because I go to the gym in both these cities, but I could always go a little further south. So I did there’s another little town not that far from where I normally work where it’s a little bit more laid-back and people are up late at night and that’s not a weird thing to see.
I’m not gonna fix anything on the car, but I’m just going to maintain it in its condition that it’s in until I have enough money to upgrade but no way am I gonna sell it cause I also live in it and as much as I wanna curse myself for making this commitment a year ago it has taught me to think outside of the box and to find a new way to solve an old problem that came up in my life before and came back now.
When I finally figured out the challenge was for me to slow down and take some time to look around at everything. I started to make it a little bit easier for me.
I don’t like to live in a world of absolute or finites every now and then I do dabble in being a little crazy. I mean, I live in my car. I am currently being paid to not work. It sounds like a dream come true maybe minus the car but that’s kind of the crazy part of it. I do like it but for a minute there I kinda lost myself.
Now I’m back
Has anyone tried the buddy flex heater and cooker? Seems like a good deal
Tired, stressed, emotional, all things you shouldn't be while driving, but I felt I needed to drive so I could charge the battery so the car would hopefully start in the morning. God damnit. No one is answering their phone. Nothing makes you feel more alone then calling a random girl on your Instagram because no one else will pick up.
Hey guys, don't worry too much, I don't mean to soft beg, just have no one to talk to about it. Not sure how I feel about it right now, but I don't feel distraught.
i’ve seen a lot of posts about not being able to handle the cold, meanwhile i’m over here in 2 layers max, one fuzzy blanket, snoozing the night away perfectly fine. (with the exception of occasionally needing to get up for the bathroom in the middle of the night).
i’m in ohio and it’s been dipping into the upper 20s the last week or so. this is my second winter car living and last winter it never got too cold, probably only dipped into the single digits a handful of times. the only issues i remember having last winter were my feet getting cold even while wearing thick socks. condensation has honestly been way more of a pain in the ass for me than anything else.
hope all of y’all have a safe and relatively warm winter! given the irreversible damage we’ve done to the earth, these winters should just keep getting easier until we all explode, right?
