Input on timing chain Quotes

Hello vr6 community!

So I've already posted this on vwvortex. But since this is my first time EVER taking a car to a shop. I would like all the input I can get across all platforms.

I have a Audi TT 3.2L with a 6 speed. I want to say since November I've been having the dreaded vr6 timing chain rattle.

Originally I was planning on doing the job myself. But after going under the car and seeing how I have to remove part of the quattro system, transmission, some bottom frame?, axles etc. I feel like this job will take me around 1-2 months to complete on my own. No bueno. I contacted 3 shops in the SoCal area and these are the quotes

Auto Union Tuning- $2600 for basic timing chain job nothing else included. Also stated it could be much more depending on what they "find" wrong.

I dont even think they added all the seals and gaskets. So could actually be up to $3000.

FourSeasons Tuning- $3,800 added water pump, fuel injector cleaning, aluminum crack pipe, new seals, and gaskets.

Pacific German- $4,000 added aluminum crack pipe and thermostat housing, new seals, and gaskets. Also stated they can "play with the price a little bit" if I'm serious.

I've attached the link to my original post so you can see the quote paperwork in detail. Since I cant add pictures to this post my original post

01 GTI VR6 Failed - are eBay engines worth it?

Hey everyone. My first post here. I already posted on VWvortex but I thought I’d try here as well. My timing chain/guides failed on my 01 GTI 12v Vr6. No compression in all cylinders. I’m assuming I have damaged cylinder head and valves etc. I haven’t had a chance to visually look what the damage was. But I found an engine from a 02 GTI 12v VR6 with 120k on eBay. They have a video of it running and revving it and it’s sounds fine, I’ll try to link the video. The car also doesn’t seem to have been in accident, I don’t know why they have it but I’ll find out. It listed with shipping for $800 which is not a bad price for me considering it would give me a car to use for the next few years. The engines have a 1 year difference but are both 12v. Would this cause me problems with my immobilizer system/instrument cluster/ecu? If I did the swap, would I need the key/cluster/ecu? Would you recommend buying an engine off of eBay at all, or would it be better to get my engine remachined if possible and buy new valves etc. or just buy a new head? I probably can’t afford an entire remade engine, but I could proabably afford a new head.

Here’s the link to the engine on eBay:

Hi guys uk here, I helped a few friends of mine do a vr6 swap in 12 hours. I know not the fastest but a personal best for the lads, hoping to go vr with my 97 variant so would you do 12v or 24v?

Exhaust options

So I finally found a GTI VR6 24v. I've been looking around for exhaust stuff which leads me to my question since I keep seeing mixed information on it. Is a vr6 12v test pipe and catback compatible with a 24v system?

Looking at a VR6 GTI

So I'm looking at a 2003 VR6 GTI with 260k miles. I'm unfamiliar anything VW. The guy wants 2k for it and the body looks good. Anything I should be aware of before looking at it? Is 2k too much?

Looking for headlight recommendations for my 2003 24v VR6 GLI

I badly need to replace the foggy stock headlights. I am looking for links to decent headlights (preferably no tint) and that can be installed without having to rewire anything. This is the first of many changes I would like to make ;)

B6 3.6L oil pump bolt possibly failing

Just curious has anyone replaced the notorious bolt o’ death on the B6 3.6l’s? Mine is throwing codes for crankshaft and camshaft position sensors on both banks! The MIL lights up and EPC lights up too. I know to do the work the transmission needs to be removed. Any advice on this issue or what you paid for the repair?

MK IV VR6 3 Liter from France :)

Hello All,

What the best subreddit place to talk about my car ? Here, is a good beginning i think ^^.

So this is my Golf MK IV, initially 1.4l petrol engine (AKQ code), swapped with an "hybrid" VR6 version. By Hybrid, i mean custom assembly of block, from MK V R32 BUB and cylinder head from a 2.8l 24V BDE engine.

The 5-speed manual transmission have left place for a 6-speed transmission (02M) from a 4 motion version, modified to be FWD only.

The result : an almost sleeper car, with lot of torque, and really magic VR6 sound :)

Ight so I need some help. I own a 2004 Jetta vr6 it overheated and I blew a coolant hose somewhere (i assume its crack pipe) a while ago and now whenever I start it it’ll get up to temp but dies once it’s at temp. Anybody got any suggestions on what the problem could be?

2003 Jetta GLI that is going to the scrapyard (San Diego)

Does anyone want a GLI with a blown head gasket for cheap? It is going to hit the scrapyard in a few days but I would rather sell it for $300 than see it scrapped.

Interesting problem

So my 2001 GTI vr6 will sometimes read cold, then most the time it reads fine. I also somehow lost a lot of coolant but no leaks. I know it’s not a head gasket because there is no signs of a head gasket. Plus just changed oil and no one said anything about the oil being frothy. I’ve hear it can be a Coolant temp gauge, I have one ready to go just want to get some more opinions on the matter.

Cylinder #4 Misfire

MK5 R32, 85k miles, second car so it doesn't get driven much.

Started experiencing a constant misfire on cylinder #4. I've ruled out coil pack. Took out the spark plug and it looked greasy compared to the others. I could smell unburned gas in the cylinder so I imagine the injector is working.

No codes other than the misfire on #4. Any ideas and/or VagCom tests I can run to diagnose?

Looking to buy MK5 R32

Hey guys I'm looking at buying a MK5 R32. I had a MK5 GTI a few years back and loved it until the DSG went bonkers because the previous owner never did DSG service on it, surprised it lasted those 47k miles i put into it with a lot of fun drives, so I know to look for DSG and Haldex records of maintenance. Was wondering what else I should keep an eye out for when shopping. My budget is 10k so I'm looking at higher mileage one that range from 80k to 150k. What can I expect as far as problems to be wary of? I'm definitely trying to find one with full Maintenance records, which I've found a few but they do have over 100k on the odometer. But they're also only asking about 8k for those. Any help would be appreciated!
