Hi everyone. I'm an undergrad junior at another school interested in applying here for graduate school. I have a few questions about grad admissions here for the CS and ECE department:
- Is the admission by committee or by individual faculty?
- What are the typical caliber for masters and phd students here?
- As a CS student undergrad, would there be difficulty applying to ECE department?
- I have until fall to prepare. What would be best use of this time?
As the title states, I was wondering if anyone had any idea on the feasibility of petitioning for advanced comp credit from ECE 385. After writing over 100 pages of lab reports and looking at the requirements for the petition I believe this class meets the requirements. I just wanted to hear some feedback and hear if anyone has attempted this before.
I have been admitted to my second choice major, which is System and Design Engineering in UIUC's Grainger College of Engineering. Is there a possibility to switch my major after a year to Mechanical Engineering?
where do i submit my LOCI? + is it necessary
I am an incoming freshman perusing Graphic Design (you have probably seen my other question on housing, this is kinda a follow up question to that). I wanted to know about how you either pick your roommate or know about the randomly assigned roommate(s) you'll be paired with. Is there a proper forum on finding roommates or do you just pair with someone you already know?
If you guys ever wanted to go to random lectures but didn't want to go through the hassle of searching for each class one by one on course explorer, here you go course_explorer_spring2025.xlsx.
Notes: a few lectures have messed up locations due to a different table design choice on the course explorer site(sorry music peeps). The spreadsheet does not include lecture-discussions, discussions, or labs.
I'm wanting to get my motorcycle license this year but where can I go to get MSF training? On their website there's SIU, but it doesn't seem they have any slots anywhere. As for other locations 2-3 hours away, they don't supply equipment and/or are around $200-$300 which is crazy because isn't MSF training considered free??
Will ask in as simple terms as possible:
3.1 unweighted, 1300 sat, 3 extracurriculars on common app (2 are actually pretty good in terms of career), in-state
impressive essay + great supplementals
so ass stats but clear interest in major + already have experience, along with unique characterization (non bland essay + supps)
if i were to appeal I’d mention the additional career experiences I’ve had since, i just dont know if it’s worth it given the insane amount of Denieds + deferreds for people with exceptional stats and great extracurriculars.
was the large amount of denieds/deffereds possibly a scarecrow to scare off those not truly interested in UIUC due to the housing crisis, allowing appeals to readd the passionate people?
sorry if some of the adjectives here come off as cocky (“impressive”, “great”, “unique”, “non-bland”, “passionate”, etc.) I’m just trying to state everything as blunt as possible and hope yall take it at face value when responding.
and by “worth it” i mean do i have a chance of getting in because by waiting to appeal id be missing the commit deadline for some schools that would lose me scholarships
Hi, I’m a current HS senior and just got admitted for bio at UIUC. It’s probably my top choice at the moment, but I’m concerned about my second semester grades for sure.
I’m taking AP Calc BC at the moment and the class is extremely difficult for me. I got a B first semester but I have a feeling I might end up getting a D this semester.
I’m just wondering how common it is for UIUC to rescind admissions and if a D in calc bc would spark UIUC to to do so. I’m obviously trying my hardest to not make this a reality but I just want to know beforehand how rescission works at UIUC. Thanks!
I just got accepted as an incoming freshman in graphic design and I wanted to know what housing was available that is decent and has the least amount issues.
I just got admitted for CS+Philosophy and had some inquiries. I would appreciate any help whatsoever.
What is the general consensus on cs+philosophy? Can this major effectively explore the interconnection of computer science and philosophy in a relevant way? I'm not 100% sure what sector of computer science I'm most interested in, but would I be disadvantaged seeking computer science related careers? I also see on the course map that cs+philosophy has some room for free electives senior year meanwhile the normal CS course map has things like CS advanced electives and CS technical electives - can I take similar advanced CS courses as my free electives in a similar capacity? Also, is changing to a different CS+X like CS+economics or CS+linguistics feasible? I'm mostly set on philosophy but these also interest me.
Overall- How effective is cs+philosophy, and how does it fare with other CS+X majors?
Hi! I'm looking for someone to sublease my room in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment. I live at 700 S. Gregory on the 4th floor, which is 5 minute walk east from the main quad and right next to CRCE. Its close to multiple bus lines including: 2 Red, 12 Teal, 22 Illini, 10 Gold, and others. The unit's fully furnished and features stainless steel appliances, in-unit laundry, 3 smart Tv's, a secure package room, elevators and LOTS of storage.
Rent would be $700 a month INCLUDING utilities, which are all-inclusive so you can use as much water and electricity as you want without worrying about additional costs (rent can be negotiable)
Since it is a JSM property, you would get access to their student center, fitness center as well as be apart of their VIP program.

Can be for both bedrooms or just 1. Dm with any questions!
I was looking for a light technical for next semester, would this be good? I thought it would be a good combination with ECE 385
You smelled like pee and old coffee, so strong and sour, why </3 my favorite desk </3 stunk up
I got accepted recently and I was wondering what documents my counselor had to send before or after I accept my offer. Also if there was anyway to look at what I owe specifically I cant seem to find anything.
Is it your first choice or second choice major ?
I am unfamiliar with the campus and the surrounding towns. I see some folks online say there are neighborhoods/streets that have higher crime rates, but they aren't specific (or recent).
What neighborhoods would you recommend renting from, and which neighborhoods/streets should be avoided?
(also do people say the "Urbana-Champaign area", "CU", etc., how do I abbreviate in the lingo of the locals?)
Thank you in advance!
I got denied from Gies and accepted into ACES. I plan on doing Agri-Accounting and getting my CPA. I also want to attempt to transfer into Gies after my freshmen year(I know how rare it is). If I get denied again I plan on still finishing my Agri- Accounting degree. Is this a good decision or should I go get my accounting degree at a business school I got accepted to?
So has UIUC made any steps to end anything DEI-related in response to Trump's executive orders, as other major universities have?
Hi all! I am looking for someone to take over my lease at the Tower at Third for the 25-26 school year(August 2025-July 2026). It is a private bedroom in a 2bd/1bath apartment. Rent is $879/month, includes washer/dryer in unit and is less than a 10 minute walk to the main quad and a minute walk to Green Street. There is a roommate matching system for this apartment, so you can choose who you’d like to room with based on similar preferences and personalities! There is a study lounge and fitness center in the building as well! Please reach out if you are interested or have any questions!!
Literally can’t find a single part time job on campus, why is there none 😩😩 it’s alright tho. I’m sure I’ll find one eventually. If anyone has any tips please share thanks
Hello, I have a zoom interview this week and was wondering what rooms offer the best noise cancellation and also least amount of window coverage (for example the study rooms with the all glass walls in the main library could prove distracting for someone like me). I just need a spot that’s as quiet as possible and as least distracting as possible.
Some things I’ve heard from browsing this subreddit already:
MPAL has really good reservable interview rooms (can anyone verify?)
Someone else on this subreddit had a terrible time with a zoom interview in the Career Center interview rooms as it was too noisy, so I likely will not be going there.
Your my goat 🙏
Trying to see if anybody has any experiences with community property management (previously campus property management), specifically 217 S Neil St. I heard they sold off most of their buildings to fairlawn, and though the only posts I can find about CPM are terrible reviews, they are also super old and from before their conversion. are they really still that bad?
Would it be acceptable/good? Not interested in going thru all the graphics mess to build a game
Hey guys Im new here, just wanted to ask how can I join some clubs around here? Chess, trading, robotics, soccer maybe even poker clubs would be interesting actually. Does anyone know anything about this?
If you go to the basement of the Union, you will see various posters about how they plan to renovate the lower area. No idea why the basement needed to be renovated to begin with, but if you look at the pictures they are reducing seating for some reason. The number of physical seats along with the practical use of seating is being reduced (the weird curved booths they want will definitely not be filled to capacity). Further, the usable table space is also being reduced, especially with the new curved booths.
Anyone know why this is happening? Feels strange to spend money to reduce functionality of a space that is fine as is. If you want to see their plans, they sent out an email that leads to this page.
Hi I just got admitted to gies college of business and plan to declare ds + finance as my major. Since I am an international student planning to work after graduation, I'd like to know if it's stem designated and about the placements in general. Additionally if some light could be shed on the new siebel School of computing and data science in grainger. Will my ds and cs classes be conducted there? Also double degree options etc, anything about urbana-champaign or uiuc in general. UIUC was my dream school since grade 11 but now that I'm admitted i will also need to check the finances! Also it's possible to do a double major or something like aht or minor in some major at grainger right
