Change of weather and sprint race that was meant to be not so hot will be 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) with over 50% humidity. Middle of the day race. Any tips beyond the usual rehydrating constantly etc?
Pretty much the title. I swam in a lake last September. My Garmin says the temp was 19c. I was chilly but felt that it was refreshing. It's my first triathlon and I don't know if I want to invest hundreds of dollars in a wet suit just yet.
The race website says the water should feel between 19c to 21c.
Hoping those of you with more experience can guide me with this.
Thank you in advance!
Me and my boyfriend are going to be doing triathlons together soon and would love matching his and hers tri suits but not just boring black design, we both like bold designs and colours. Any recommendations appreciated :) Thank you
I have registered for a 70.3 Ironman in December.
Along the way, as part of my training, I am planning to do a sprint and an Olympic distance triathlon.
In terms of training, do you think I should focus on the Ironman or should I focus on achieving each milestone individually?
I am asking this question because I am planning to buy a training plan and not sure what to buy.
I need your advice
This got auto-deleted from a couple weightlifting subs (can't use the word "injury"), and removed from r/advancedrunning. Hopefully I get some better traction here!
I used to race on the pro circuit (ITU and USAT), and now at 40 I try to just maintain basic fitness. Injuries are getting more common, though. Most recently, I broke a bone in my foot wearing old, unsupportive shoes doing yardwork this summer.
I'm going to get into a more regular lifting routine to help prevent injuries. Basic machines and free weights (squats, etc). No olympic lifts.
I've gotten conflicting advice on what kind of shoe would be best. I want something with good support, especially given the broken foot a few months ago. Do I go for something with a high drop like a Nike Savaleos? Or something flatter like a Metcon? Or something completely different? Despite being popular in gym communities, I don't think Chuck Taylors will give the support I need.
Does anyone know this type of TT bike? Ideally personal riding experience? If so, how is it? Sorry for the bad picture quality.
Hi, since 2 months I started to train regularly with a coach for half Ironman in June, bike 3 times a week
My initial FTP - 06/12/2024 was 209 watts.
I did the test again today after 8 weeks and I did 222 watts
Test: a 20-minute ride as hard as I can manage
Is the increase of 13 W in 8 weeks a good result? I don't know how to fully interpret this.
Male 178 cm, 79 kg (I've lost about 3 kg over these 2 months)
Just wanted to share my NBD with you guys. My winter project is done as far as the first test ride looked like! Started with a crashed Cube Aerium C68 SL frame. Fixed all cracks ( if you don't know what you do, not recommended, as it can be dangerous if the frame cracks during your ride due to imperfect bonding of the cracks), gave it a new paint job and hopefully a long second life:) And obviously it was a steal price wise! The most difficult was to find brakes that fit, because the Magura original ones are shitty and hard to get. But the Omega One breaks seem to do the job just fine! Let's see how it looks after a few rides. :)
Hey all
I have been looking at doing triathlon for a bit now, but just don't have the time to swim, and decided to just focus on running and cycling. I have been enjoying this very much, but also want to focus on strength training, as this supports my main sport. So far I have just been using the Garmin Coach intermediate olympic plan, and substituting the swim days with gym days. Is there a better way to this? Thanks!
Edit: I didn't really make this clear in the original post. I have decided I'm not all for swimming, as I don't find it as fun, and was more interested in training triathlon-style, as I like both running and cycling, but I don't really enjoy swimming
If you were building a brand new bike and had to choose between these options which would you pick:
Or
Also are hydraulic breaks worth it for an extra $500?
Where would I get the best value between wheelset, shifting, and braking?
My bike is a 20 year old aluminum road bike that has gotten the job done but I’m ready to upgrade and having a hard time deciding which areas to splurge since I’ve been doing without of all these features.
I am leaning towards electric shifting and basic wheels because it would be easier to upgrade the wheels down the line.
Tri season stopped in August. Ran a dirty bulk for the last 3 months of the year to regain some strength and also give myself a break from tri training. The good news is my lifts sky rocketed (e g. bench 165->240lbs), the bad news is I went from 150 to 170lbs at 5'9 and I can definitely feel it on my joints when I run. I believe racing at this weight would seriously hamper my performance and also figure I'm more likely to get injured at my weight.
My only tri planned this year is in November (AZ, IM). My current plan is to try and cut down to about 155lbs before I start on my IM training plan. While I'm cutting, doing a half marathon plan for a May race in my city. Not cycling or swimming much. Reason being I think I would have serious trouble trying to cut while needing to fuel for all 3 sports, but for some reason running is the one sport I can actually make progress while losing weight.
That pretty much means I'll spend the next 3mo losing weight and doing light training before hopping on a training peaks plan. Does this plan make sense, or have y'all had success cutting weight while seriously training?
Fwiw lost about 5lbs in Jan down to 164.4 as of this AM.
I'm gearing up for my next triathlon and I'm torn between two aero helmets: the MET Codatronca and the Kask Mistral. They both look fast, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with either (or both!). What are your thoughts on comfort during long rides? How's the ventilation? Any pros or cons I should consider before making my final decision? Let me know what you think!
We're going to try out something new for a bit: a daily chat thread for people to share how training is going, ask minor questions, and get to know one another.

Hi Hello, I'm training with the Joe method, and I was wondering what cadence I should ride at in my workouts (AE, ME, AC). I tend to ride with a heavy gear, and as a result, I think I'm going slower.
Thanks a lot 🙏
Hello everyone,
Last year I did my first sprint, now i’m training for two more sprints and one OD triathlon this year. Because I will be doing more triathlons and more training I am looking to purchase my first wetsuit, but because there are so many brands I don’t know which to choose.
My budget is around €200,-, I see zone3, ORCA, 2XU and other brands.. If you were in my situation, which wetsuit would you buy?
Hi Everyone, I want to place my ten year old Specialised Shiv Expert (medium frame). It has been a great bike to compete on (sprint, olympic and 70.3) but I will like an upgrade to electronic shifters and disc brakes. I have been looking at the Argon 18 E119, Felt 2.0 and Quintana Too V-PRi. I am really struggling with bike part lingo and trying to work out which bike frame and components would be better for me. Any advice would be much appreciated.
HELP NEEDED!
Swapped a cockpit on a tri bike and have run into a pickle. The old base bar was 21mm inner diameter, but this new base bar is 19mm. Shimano ST-R9180 now won’t fit due to the wedge being made for 20.5-22.5.
The exploded view shows a smaller wedge, Y0C400022, but I just got off the phone with Shimano Tech and they don’t carry, nor have they ever carried, this as a replacement. The product detail page on the consumer site shows it comes with a band that fits 19mm-22.5mm. Of course, this is the only type of base bar brake lever that uses this compression style.
So, before I shave this wedge down, does anyone have any broken ones of these lying around that I can take off your hands for the parts?
Thanks!
Currently training for an Ironman, about 4 weeks out from the big day.
My bodyweight hasn't really changed during training I expected to drop a couple of kgs as I did during my previous marathon training.
I weight 82kg (181lbs) at 185cm (6'1") so I'm not crazy heavy but during my marathon training I unintentionally dropped to about 78kg and I feel it helped my running.
I eat moderately healthily with good main meals and some less healthy snacking. Since I ramped up my volume I have increased my carb portions. I guess is also fuel quite well on cycling etc.
I must be at equal calories in and calories out as I am staying at the same weight. My question is should I try for a slight deficit or would this impact my training more than it would help with weight.
Thanks in advance
Hi guys! Brand new to this sub. I’m turning 30 (F) this summer and my goal is to do my first ever triathlon sometime this fall but I have absolutely no clue where to start. How do I find a coach? How long is training typically? Where do I start?! Lol !
For some context, I struggle with PCOS and thyroid disease and used to be well over 200 lbs. I do F45 5-6 days a week (for those who don’t know, that’s a mix of HIIT cardio and strength training) and I walk at least 3 miles a day on top of that. I’m in pretty good shape but most likely not anywhere near first timer triathalon shape.
Anywho - I would love any and all advice! Cheers!
Hello, I bought that 1 day triathlon pass. For the IRONMAN race.
Do I need to have a medical certificate that I am healthy? Or there is no need for one.
Thanks
Hi! I am thinking about raceing in either in Italy at 09.21 or at Porec on 10.19. I dont have a wetsuit and dont realy want to spend money on it. Do you guys thing the water temp is okay to swim whitout a wetsuit on this races?
Hey everyone,
I’m training for my first 70.3 in July.
The video isn't shot from the best angle (it was tricky with a crowded pool), but hopefully, you can still spot areas for improvement. Any advice on efficiency, breathing, body position, or stroke mechanics would be super helpful!
Thanks in advance!
Hello. Like I mentioned above, I’m training for my first Ironman 70.3 later this year and would like some bike advice.
I bought a Specialized Crosstrail Bike off my friend and got one of the gears fixed up. It’s a 3:8 speed and has SPX-200 tires with 622-18C rims. From what I’ve read, these may be too small.
So my question is, do I make any changes to the bike and keep rolling or would I be better off just opting for a whole new bike entirely?
I posted a video a few weeks ago and have been practicing with the advice I received. What can I do to improve further?
We are officially 100 days out from the 2025 70.3 IMGC!
Just wanted to start a thread for peeps doing the race (and whoever is curious). I’m super pumped for May and am currently in week 4 of the 80/20 Level 1 Half training plan. If you have any tips/advice, please share. Can’t wait to get out there and get after it!
Hello, I would appreciate to hear your advice about taking a bike with you by a plane for an Ironman race.
I have seen on YouTube that many people just use a cardboard which is free. But I saw that you can rent an actual durable bag for 50-80€/per week.
What did you do when you travelled for a race?
Note: I have to travel by train (3 hours) in order to go to a different airport on the way back home.
Thank you for the advices in advance!
Hi All,
Last year I did a lactate threshold test on the bike which put my zone two power to 190 watts and corresponding heart rate was 140 BPM. I have been using rule of thumb that my LTHR for running would be this +10 BPM. However, if I do running threshold test, I can run 30min at +190 BPM (10k PR averages 187 BPM). If I use these values to determine my running zone 2, I could go up to 166 BPM for zone 2. Which is a 26 BPM difference. Can this be correct? The cycling lactate test was in a professional setting, so I am fairly convinced about that result. Additional information
What number should I use in order to keep myself in check but still training efficiently?
I'm due to do my first triathlon in a few months and hope to make them part of my yearly event calendar going forward, but as it gets closer and I consider the details of it more, I've started to think about how to 'deal' with my glasses.
For some background, I wear glasses all day, every day and have done for about 2 decades. A couple of years ago I tried contacts as something I could have for certain sport events (I think specifically I wanted them for a tough mudder but also would wear them for some running races since glasses/prescription sunglasses don't feel super sturdy on my head).
Obviously with a triathlon things are different and I can't just wear glasses for the whole thing because of the swim in particular. I do have prescription goggles that are... alright... but they aren't super watertight and were pretty much the only pair I could find available and are ok enough for training. So now for the race I'm trying to think of whether I should:
- Wear my prescription goggles and swap to my glasses for the bike & run
- Wear my contacts with normal goggles, but I worry about the risk of my non-prescription goggles leaking and me having to take my contacts out during t1 because of the chance of eye infection.
- Just get laser eye surgery, this feels like it might be on the extreme side but it's something I've thought about on and off for a few years, particularly for convinience during sport.
I'd be curious to hear what my fellow partially-sighted athletes generally do and if anyone else has taken the plunge into laser eye surgery specifically for triathlonning?
Hey everyone, recently i started to train to do an ironman. Before this my triathlon experience is zero, but i have ran a few marathons in the past year. Since december im following a free plan to train for an ironman in october. Thats beside the point because i do not need advice about that, it was just to paint the picture.
I have done bodybuilding for a long time, and now since the past year that i started to do more endurance building, i want to ask you if i have any shot at mantaining a good phisique, and not be all dried out tomatoe like elite runners. (that's not to offend anyone, and i believe my point comes across). I'm still mantaining a 4x a week gym hypertrophy sessions, while cycling and running 3x a week, and swimming 2x per week.
I did not notice any gains loss, and only notice less fatter areas in my body. i want to keep a good body while still doing endurance all the time. My nutrition is good, and maybe i will need to intake more calories to be able to mantaing the same level of muscle and strengh.
I dont want to run the fastest, neither to swim or cycle the fastest, but i want to do it confortably. My main goal with endurance is to do it confortably, and yes faster if i can, but not with losing weight for that. i weigh aroung 95kg, 176cm, and somewhat percentage of bodyfat with a 4th pack and some belly fat.
That's my question, thank you all in advance
Edit: I think i need to clarify that i dont use any PEDs, suplements or nothing. Im natural, and i call myself a bodybuilder because my goal is to gain muscle, but also with that muscle gainning strengh and flexibility. One person looks at the word bodybuilder and thinks of Arnold schwarzenegger or Sulek, but imagine more like jeff nippard or Geoffrey Schofield. By definition i call it bodybuilding
2nd Edit: I want to thank you all for the feedback, i think i will keep weightraining just to maintaing phisique, and in the 2 months leading to the ironman, will cut it down a bit, definitely will loose mass, but with right nutrition i will still be jacked. if you want to see the policeman from cloudy with a chance of meatballs doing an ironman, ill post the ending photo
First triathlon this week and excited for it! Not seeking medical treatment! Race is 20.8km and will be in freezing temperatures. Worried about nutrition. I’ll be making sure to have lots of carbs and fluids and will try to bring small snacks and water along with me. Worried I’ll get lightheaded and lack sleep beforehand. I’ve done a mock race two weeks before and I feel confident I can get the distance done but I have rough painful periods that wear me down. Any suggestions for nutrition given these circumstances is appreciated, help a gal not pass out!
