Pictures and videos, fiction or real, related to the deep dark water that make us really uncomfortable.
thalassophobia - fear of being in large bodies of water, fear of the vast emptiness of the sea, of sea waves, and fear of distance from land
megalohydrothalassophobia - fear of large things in the water
We have both!
Look out for the "Exemplary" flair! We the mods give this flair to all the links which we believe are in line with our idea for what the content for /r/thalassophobia is supposed to look like!
Subreddit rules.
1. Only thalassophobia related posts and titles
If you’re posting something, ask yourself: Is it triggering my thalassophobia (fear of vast and/or deep bodies of water) or is it triggering a different sort of fear? Make sure your title highlights thalassophobia - see rule 3.
2. Restrictions on sea life
Sea life is permissible as long as it isn't the main focus of the content. Generally speaking, you should not post pictures with sea life as the main focus. A shark swimming calmly next to a diver is not a suitable post for this sub, neither is a shark having a seal for lunch. If it is the main focus, it also has to emerge unexpectedly from nothing. Absolutely NO dubbed in noises (this usually applies to whales).
Posting sea life is also okay under megalohydrothalassophobia (fear of large water creatures) criteria:
3. Use proper titles
Any posts with just “Nope” as a title will be automatically removed. Don’t do that. Just don’t. Same with “That’s a nope from me”. Just avoid the word “nope”. Furthermore, titles in the spirit of “OMG SO CREEPY” or emojis will also be removed.
Your title should highlight the thalassophobic nature of the post rather than any sea creature in the post. For example, if you're posting a video of a shark, we're not interested in the shark itself, we're interested in the massive blue void of nothingness behind him. Titles focusing on sea creatures will be removed.
4. No jokes, memes, or cartoons
While we all love a good laugh, it isn’t specifically what we’re looking for in this sub. Thalassophobia-related artwork is okay as long as it adheres to all the other rules.
5. Be nice and courteous
Seriously, there’s seldom a need to be nasty. There’s absolutely no need to be nasty on this sub. So don’t be.
6. No reposts
Reposts will be monitored within a 90 day window. We will also be maintaining a list of retired submissions that have been posted so much that they have been retired to the "Thalassophobia Hall of Fame" to never be posted again...
7. No gore
Absolutely no gore is allowed on this subreddit, not animals, not people, nothing.
For additional information, including enforcement, please see our rules wiki page.

I have to think that despite loving and being enamoured by the ocean, I think the ocean is more scary than it is beautiful.
This is an actual horror movie come to life.
My body expression says it all. Absolutely terrifying. The water was so cold compared to everywhere else. Found that kinda neat.
The Sedco 706 in a winter storm in 1998, the photo is taken from a fixed platform.
Usually the two would be connected by a bridge which was disconnected during bad weather.
Hey guys! I don’t have thalassophobia but I love your pics and videos. Yesterday night I thought about you guys on my rock in the sea.
it’s a metal album about descending into the depths of the ocean I think? very slow heavy and sludgy. The post was from a few months ago and i think was a crazy winter storm at sea, the song almost sounds like it’s just noises from the boat at first.
hope this kind of post is allowed. this album rips.
and no, it’s not that song
The 1989 scifi film "The Abyss" is the only movie about deep sea things that doesn't trigger my thalassophobia. Every other movie or game makes me want to crawl out of my skin. I have a theory as to why.
I am originally from Columbia, SC and the movie was filmed in Gaffney SC. When was a teenager, I did a research project on the Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant and how the movie was largely filmed there. I built a (very crude) small model based off of images found online at the time of the filming of the movie have researched how other deep sea movies are made and they still give me the heebie jeebies. But not The Abyss. I find myself wondering if others have similar movies or games that don't bother them.
So, do you have a movie or game that deals with deep sea exploration or creatures that doesn't make you wanna implode?

Hey folks,
I watched this last night while I was battling insomnia. It was actually pretty well done, but I'm posting it here because the idea of running out of fuel in a plane when you can't even see land gave me a feeling of dread that water doesn't usually provoke in me. So I thought somebody else might enjoy this too.
Props to him though, I'm sure without the fear, this would be a memorable experience. Just not for everyone.
does this photo conjure any eerie and unsettling feelings for anyone else? just thinking about how incredibly deep this relatively small swath of land once was? and all the unknown within its dark depths? trees.....cars...metal........bodies....
