October 3rd, 2024 - r/trumptweets: tracking Trump's social media posts inside the Reddit Community

33,000 truth-seekers decoding Donald Trump for 8 years!

r/trumptweets is a subreddit dedicated to dissecting and discussing the erratic and often controversial social media posts of former President Donald Trump, specifically those from his platform Truth Social. Designed as a space where users can engage with Trump's posts without directly supporting his platform, the subreddit offers a curated look into his unfiltered thoughts and statements. It serves as a community hub for those curious about Trump's ongoing presence in social media and politics, providing a critical lens through which to analyze his rhetoric and its implications. The sub is ran with a light mod touch and as long as users engage civilly, the mods are hands off. This is an unusual approach when it comes to political subs, and it's something that the mod team prides themselves on. We want discussions to happen with no biased modding or schenanigans.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, r/trumptweets becomes increasingly significant. Trump remains a polarizing figure in American politics, with his social media presence wielding considerable influence over public opinion and political discourse. The subreddit plays a crucial role in monitoring and discussing Trump's communications, offering insights into his strategies, messaging, and potential policy directions. This transparency is vital for voters and analysts alike, allowing for informed discussions on Trump's positions and their implications for national and international affairs.

October 2nd, 2024 - /r/bettafish: Do you have a colorful finned friend? I don't. My aunt says it's unlucky for Italian women to have live birds and fish in the house. Is this true? Probably not, but I'm not going to risk it.

r/bettafish

252,952 betta fish fanatics fin-flipping for 12 years!

I wasn't always afraid of bad luck. There was a time in my life that I didn't believe in such nonsense. I'm different now. Everything has changed. It's been years since I've shared anything on SROTD. I've missed you guys even though you probably don't remember me. That may be for the best, now that I think of it. Anyway, I'm not here to write about me, I'm here to write about something much more interesting, r/bettafish.

This amazing subreddit is committed to the care and quality of life of the betta fish, sometimes known as Siamese fighting fish. Commonly admired for their long, flowing, colorful fins, these creatures have won the hearts of millions. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to coexist with bettas, know that they are so much more than just a pretty face. Scroll through this subreddit and learn more about the personalities and affection these fish show to their owners.

They don't advocate shaming on this subreddit, just education, but let's face it - it wouldn't be Reddit if someone wasn't shaming you for messing up. I have an embarrassing confession. I kept my first betta in a vase with a pothos plant because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. It was cruel and I should have done more research before I tortured and eventually killed this poor fish. Talk about bad luck. I have reformed however and the only pets I've had for the last three years have been my faithful 14yr old cat and two senior dogs that I intercepted on the way to the kill shelter. Sorry, enough about me. Back to the fish!

While bettas originated from still ponds in Thailand and can surface-breathe (unlike the average goldfish), they need at least 5 gallons to thrive. Also, it is imperative that they live in a tank heated to 78-80 degrees. Frequent water changes are needed, even with filtration. Do you remember when I mentioned those beautiful fins? Stick with live or silk plants to avoid snags. Set your filter to a gentle flow so you don't stress out your fish.

Long story short (too late), visit r/bettafish before purchasing your new family member and do the research to give him a great life. Your betta can live up to 7 years with proper care. It's like the opposite of breaking a mirror. That happened during my last move. I can't tell if I'm currently having bad luck though. Being an adult and taking care of everyone and everything is difficult. I wouldn't call it "bad" though. I am lucky in so many ways. The mirror thing has to be a myth. Maybe I should get a betta? Or make it a sorority? Or maybe just stalk r/bettafish and have all the good betta feelings, but none of the work? That may be the most sensible option. Hope you enjoy this sub and I am wishing all of you happy swimming!

####/r/ExposurePorn

You know what I love? Some long-exposure photography. Leave a camera to capture a moment over a long duration, and you get something like this. That linked picture is a five-minute exposure from 1986 of a helicopter circling above Carson, California. It's pretty beautiful. Taking a picture in this way gives you something a normal static picture won't - movement. Take a look at this. That's a photo of the star trails over three and a half hours above an abandoned Church. What a beautiful depiction of the stars circling the night sky as we down below rotate! And somehow, that's not even the most beautiful use of long-exposure photography! Check this out. That's freehand light painting - in this case a 2-minute exposure while an artist paints a photo with a light source.

For pictures like those and more, check out /r/ExposurePorn and those links below - especially the bottom one so you can see the effect long exposure has on flowing water. Some really nice stuff on there! :)

(music starts) You know the kind of sitcom that ends a season on a cliffhanger and then unceremoniously gets cancelled? Well, that was the subject of today’s featured sub, /r/mynameisearl. (music ends)

Starring the now-semi-retired actor and pro skateboarder Jason Lee as the titular Earl, My Name Is Earl ran for four seasons, centered around Earl, a former thief, trying to make karmic retribution around his local Camden County for his past misdeeds, as well as his closest acquaintances: his brother Randy (Ethan Suplee), ex-wife Joy (Jaime Pressly) and her husband >!Harry!< Darnell (Eddie Steeples), and immigrant hotel maid >!and later Randy’s green card wife!< Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) along with a recurring cast of many others. The sub is still a very active place, with people talking about interactions with the cast, memes, scenes from the show, tributes to departed cast members, and references to the show’s unfinished nature, in creator Greg Garcia’s next show Raising Hope, as well as elsewhere.

August 3rd, 2024 - /r/986Boxster: the everyman’s Porsche

/r/986Boxster

758 fried egg headlight enthusiasts reminding you that Porsche is a two-syllable word for 6 years

In general, I’m not the biggest fan of German cars, but I absolutely make an exception for Porsches. One in particular catches my eye for its mix of affordability (relatively speaking, at least) and Porsche-ness, and that car is the first generation Boxster, frequently referred to by its chassis code, 986. Entering production in the late 1990s as a convertible with a mid-engine layout using a smaller-displacement version of Porsche’s signature flat 6 engine, the 986 served as Porsche’s new entry-level model below the venerable 911, the 986 can easily be found for below $10,000 to this day in good shape, causing it to become an attainable target for enthusiasts, such as the members of today’s featured sub, /r/986Boxster. The sub is small, but dedicated, with owners looking for, and dispensing, advice about their cars (and potential cars), photos, and more. It’s a cool place for a cool car. Check it out.

August 2, 2024 - /r/SmashingPumpkins: The night has come to hold us young

/r/SmashingPumpkins

38358 ghost children waiting for the Machina reissue for 12 years

When it comes to bands who were big in the 1990s, the Smashing Pumpkins (and the “the” is important there for the band’s name, despite being absent from the titles of a few of their albums) are one of the most interesting, yet polarizing, with their prog and glam influences setting them apart from their alternative contemporaries. They released two of the most influential albums of the decade, 1993’s Siamese Dream and 1995’s Mellon Collie And the Infinite Sadness, are still releasing music to this day (literally, as today they just released a new album called Aghori Mhori Mei, hence the reason for picking /r/SmashingPumpkins for today’s SROTD), and Butch Vig’s production techniques on their 1991 debut Gish proved influential on his work on Nirvana’s immortal album Nevermind, released a few months later. On the flip side, the band’s self-destructive nature behind the scenes came to a head at the peak of its popularity (and it never fully recovered), and frontman Billy Corgan is an acquired taste for a lot of people (something even the band’s own fanbase acknowledges often), but overall I think they’ve left a positive legacy in the rock world and are more responsible than any other artist for why I like music.

The Pumpkins have had a rotating cast over a lot of their existence, with the exception of Corgan, but their current studio lineup consists of three of the original band members: Corgan, who sings and plays guitar, bass, and keyboards; guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, plus backup vocalist Katie Cole. (Some fans still hold a candle for original bassist D’arcy Wretzky to rejoin, but that doesn’t seem realistic.) The band still actively tours, including right now where they’re playing their own dates along with supporting Green Day, and are joined on-stage by bassist Jack Bates (son of former Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook) and third guitarist Kiki Wong, who recently replaced longtime member Jeff Schroeder. The sub follows goings-on of the band in general, as well as those of the individual members (Corgan is the most prolific in that regard, owning the National Wrestling Alliance, co-running a tea shop in Chicago with his wife, and previously, and forthcoming, running podcasts, while Iha composes the music for That 90s Show and Chamberlin recently toured with his jazz side project, the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex) and the occasional archival releases. There are, of course, plenty of discussions about music new and old, various side projects (notably Zwan, whose sole album is supposed to be reissued in the near future), and the weirdness of Corgan as well as the band’s social media manager, plus the many controversies over the years. There’s also lots of obscure lore about the band, curated by the excellent mod team, interviews, and fan posts like purchases, clothing, and art. But with a band that has a discography and history as deep as the Smashing Pumpkins, there’s always lots to talk about.

August 1st, 2024 - /r/malcolminthemiddle: life is unfair

/r/malcolminthemiddle

71089 Krelboynes working the closing shift at Lucky Aide for 13 years

It’s kinda hard to believe that turn-of-the-century TV shows are getting to be 25 years old now. It really feels like yesterday that Malcolm In The Middle was still on the air, but then you look it up and find out that the actor for Dewey, the youngest sibling >!for most of the show!<, is the same age as your wife. (True story.) But hey, it still holds up, and the members of /r/malcolminthemiddle agree with me on that. Originally airing for seven seasons between 2000 and 2006, Malcolm In The Middle follows the story of the >Wilkersons!<, a family of social outcasts, purportedly centered on Malcolm, the middle of three sons still living with their parents, and a fourth living elsewhere, following his journey from middle school in the first season to graduating high school in the series finale. The show’s stylistic techniques proved influential in the sitcom genre, and its mix of light and dark humor and well-written episodes gives it a solid reputation these decades later.

It’s interesting seeing the various directions the show’s main cast ended up taking. Bryan Cranston (Hal) became a superstar thanks to his next main role on Breaking Bad, Frankie Muniz (Malcolm) supplements his acting career with racing part-time in NASCAR (seriously!), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) and Chris Masterson (Francis) have occasional roles, while Justin Berfield (Reese) and Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey) retired from acting. On /r/malcolminthemiddle you’ll see stories about the characters and the people who play them, fans talking about favorite moments and characters, guest stars, memes, selections of the show’s music, and so much more. If you want a nostalgia hit, or if you’ve never seen the show but what I’ve written piques your interest, head down to /r/malcolminthemiddle. But watch out for Bernard the hamster.

560 Albuquerque residents waiting to see what’s next for 4 months

A couple weeks ago I featured the Breaking Bad memes sub, and mentioned that we’d just finished watching that series. Logically we moved on to Better Call Saul, upon which as I write this we’re on the last season. While looking into the background stuff for BCS, I found out that series creator (and fellow RVA native) Vince Gilligan is working on a new series for Apple TV+, variously known as Wycaro and Wycaro 339, with Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler in BCS) in the show’s lead role. Not much is known about the show yet, other than it’ll be a sci-fi series and not in the Breaking Bad universe. The sub /r/Wycaro is the place to follow news about the show, including cast member additions, shooting schedules, and more. Stay tuned.

1663 comic fans celebrating Dinah for 6 years

The Black Canary sub celebrates the DC Comics superheroine, Black Canary. Many people have heard of Wonder Woman who was the first female superheroine to join the Justice League. But did you know that the second female to join was Black Canary?

For 77 years, Black Canary has been among the most prominent heroines of DC Comics. Outside of comics, she is best known as the love interest of Green Arrow in shows like Arrow or cartoons like Justice League Unlimited. In comics, you regularly see her in the Green Arrow books, the Birds of Prey books or as part of the Justice League.

However she is just not a love interest. She is a Top 10 Martial Artist, an experienced leader of teams like the Justice League and is a mother. She deserves more attention and prominence in and out of comics.

It's also the perfect place to find something to read. There's no algorithms so no geared suggestions and unlike walking into a library or bookstore - you'll see everything, not just what you normally read. I've read amazing books I would never have found.

And it's a super friendly place to hang out.

June 19th, 2024 - /r/SEGAGENESIS: ...it does what /r/Nintendon't.

####/r/SEGAGENESIS

39,292 players on Sega Channel for 13 years!

The Sega Genesis. What a sleek, classic console. Also known as the Mega Drive outside North America, this machine has beautiful 16-bit graphics and blast processing. And, I'm sure, to many people it holds nostalgia too, although I'm personally of the age to have grown up with the Wii. Still, those early memories of playing through the classic Sonic trilogy via the Wii Virtual Console (and later the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection on the PS3) left me with a preference for Sonic over Mario and Sega over Nintendo, despite having been born a decade after the console war.

I've been playing through the classic 1, 2, 3&K Sonic trilogy again recently, on my Mega Drive and witnessing the beautiful pixel art on a classic box CRT (seriously, it's so beautiful), so I've naturally been checking out the subreddit too. /r/SEGAGENESIS hosts a lot of discussions, primarily about must-own games, hidden gems, and other games that may or may not have aged well.

One thing that the Genesis was known for was its many add-ons, and so /r/SEGAGENESIS is a great place to find collections of all sorts of classic Sega accessories, add-ons or otherwise. These include the CD, the 32X, a whole tower of power setup (Mega-CD karaoke!?), and even the Genesis watch! Man, that Genesis watch is so cool, I wonder how much it- okay, $800, nevermind! Anyway, give the subreddit a look - /r/SEGAGENESIS really is a great community of Sega fans who come together over their love of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

  2. Finally got a SEGA Nomad! (84 upvotes, 14 comments)

/r/wec

90160 endurance racing fans keeping up with timing and scoring for 12 years

Today is the annual running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the crown jewel event of sports car racing, so to celebrate, I’ve chosen /r/wec as today’s featured subreddit. The World Endurance Championship’s current incarnation has existed since 2012, though various forms of endurance racing centered around Le Mans have gone back decades, including a previous version of WEC in the 1980s, and in traditional sports car rules, there are multiple classes with multiple manufacturers apiece. In WEC, the top class is known as Hypercar and features prototype-style machines from manufacturers including Porsche, Toyota, Ferrari, Peugeot, Cadillac, BMW, Lamborghini, Alpine, and Isotta Fraschini, with a middle class called LMP2 all running identical chassis, and the production car-based LMGT3 class with cars like the Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, and Ferrari 296. Each car has a three-driver rotation that each must meet a certain minimum time in the car for each event, though since the events outside Le Mans range between six and ten hours, that specific time is different. The schedule has eight events: three in Europe, two in the Middle East, one in Japan, one in Brazil, and one in the United States. Each race has an overall winner as well as a class winner for the class that did not win the race overall due to the speed differences between the classes, and the same for the championship at the end of the season. In /r/wec you’ll find results, standings, news, rumors, where to tune in when an event is going on, memes, and more. Check it out.

I recently finished watching Breaking Bad for the first time, and let me tell you, it was a ride. As serious as the subject matter is, as the internet can tell you, it’s easy to make memes out of it, hence the existence of /r/breakingbadmemes. (Even >the plane crash!< gets them!) Going back and seeing a lot of the popular memes after finally seeing the show sure hits different, though there are plenty of others, such as posts from other scenes in the show as well as the show’s characters (including the Aztek) added to other meme templates. (And then there’s this actual tweet from Dean Norris.) It’s got a treasure trove from a gem of a show, and like the show’s limited number of episodes, I’m going to keep this article short and sweet. But maybe I’ll do an epilogue in a few years.

I’ll be honest. I didn’t join in the Among Us fad when it was at its peak during the pandemic, and now that my wife has turned me on to the game, I wish I had. Yeah, it’s simplistic, but it’s enjoyable, and I see why it’s had staying power. Communities for it are all over the internet, bur sometimes you play with a rando you want to be friends with, but you don’t get their info before they disconnect so you’re likely to never play with them again. Well, that’s where /r/AmongUsFriendFinder comes in. People there post the crewmate they’re looking for, and, with some luck, they find them. There’s more on the sub as well, with people looking for groups to join (or add new members), missed connections, success stories, and memes. So if you have someone on Among Us you miss playing with, or want to add more friends, /r/AmongUsFriendFinder is the place for you.

June 9th, 2024 - /r/AmericanDad: Dumb bitches like dumb things!

####/r/AmericanDad

196,113 Smiths at home now for 13 years!

We've featured some cool shows recently, so I thought I'd take today as an opportunity to include the subreddit for a show I used to watch a lot and loved back in the day, and still catch on occasion: American Dad!

In case you aren't familiar with the show, American Dad! is one of Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcoms alongside the ever-popular Family Guy and the less-popular The Cleveland Show. Following the Smith family, American Dad is still going strong with 366 episodes and its 21st season on the way later this year. While it has yet to win an Annie or Emmy Award, that doesn't matter, because today, the show's subreddit, /r/AmericanDad wins Subreddit of the Day. (Clearly the greatest honour of all time.)

/r/AmericanDad is obviously all about American Dad. This can include art including tattoos, discussions about characters and their arcs, quotes from episodes, clips from episodes, memes, and anything else American Dad related.

Here is a taste of what you can find on /r/AmericanDad:

  1. caption this (564 upvotes, 56 comments)
  2. Negative klaus or Anti-Klaus?? (253 upvotes, 58 comments)
  3. American Dad is funnier then Family Guy (2287 upvotes, 240 comments)

June 8th, 2024 - /r/PetTheDamnDog: Raising awareness for unpetted dogs so you don't have to...

####/r/PetTheDamnDog

332,290 good boys going unpetted for 6 years!

Reddit's got a ton of subs, and among my favourites are the animal-themed ones. Out of everything I could see when opening the app or going onto reddit.com, I most want to see cute pets. Cute, pettable pets. If you share this sentiment but also like posts that make you go, "Just pet them already!", then /r/PetTheDamnDog might just be for you.

It's not all about dogs, though (who knew!). /r/PetTheDamnDog is for every time someone’s ignoring an animal, dog or not. Take a look at this example - doesn't this poor cat deserve some attention? Speaking of cats, there's also /r/PetTheDamnCat which similarly allows all types of pets, but with more of a feline focus if that's your jam. So, why not dive into /r/PetTheDamnDog? It's got some good stuff - here is a taste of some of what you can find on the subreddit:

  1. Stupid smile to manipulate me. (3747 upvotes, 10 comments)
  2. The sweetest boy (2420 upvotes, 13 comments)
  3. Favorite part of her day (3060 upvotes, 19 comments)

June 6th, 2024 - /r/underworld: kiss the animal

/r/underworld

1962 moaners waiting for the next album for 11 years

In terms of influential electronic music acts, Underworld is up there as one of the greatest for me. Starting in the late 1980s as a synth-pop group, Underworld morphed into a trio of Karl Hyde, Rick Smith, and Darren Emerson, primarily in the genres of techno and progressive house, while experimenting in other genres like drum & bass over the years, with Emerson leaving in 2000. With sprawling, jam-like songs and Karl Hyde’s stream-of-consciousness lyrical and vocal style, which he still employs on new songs like Denver Luna, Underworld to me, and many others, including /r/underworld, are one of the standouts of the 1990s electronic scene. In 2012, they directed the opening and closing ceremony music for the London Olympics, and continue to release music to this day, as strong (and plentiful) as ever. On /r/underworld you’ll find news updates about songs and tours, purchases of albums both old and new, archival interviews, and much more.

u/jettasarebadmkay’s favorite Underworld song is Pearls Girl.
