This sub has gone dark in support of the protest. It's usually thoughts you might have taking a much needed sonic shower aboard a USS Federation ship.

A subreddit for you to share all those thoughts, ideas, or philosophical questions that race through your head when in the sonic shower, which will be invented around 2270.

Showerthought is a loose term that applies to any thought you might have while carrying out a routine task like sonic showering, piloting a shuttlecraft, or daydreaming in the holodeck.

Rules:

Non-sonicshowerthoughts will (generally) be removed.

Please be respectful of others submissions, if you disagree - explain why in the comments. Rudeness is unacceptable.

Posts about a certain hedgehog will be removed by the sonic shower. You may be interested in this, this, or this.

No Spoilers

No Trolling

No misinformation (I can't believe I just had to write that)

This is a small sub, and we don't have time for lots of moderation. Rule breakers may be banned at the first offense (or may get a single warning).

Are the Borg "good" in the mirror universe?

Do they go around sharing technology and healing people?

Does anyone have the name Hugh Borg

Borg's common Swedish name. Hugh less so. Sure someone has the name Hugh Borg and is regretting it.

Do joined Trills get to wear the medals of previous hosts?

Just watched the DS9 season 5 episode "The Ship." Sisko says that Starfleet is giving them all medals for retreiving the Jem Hadar ship. Dax says she'll "add it to her collection."

Which got me thinking, do joined Trills get to wear the commendations/medals of their previous hosts? Does Ezri get to wear the medals that Jadzia wore?

"Rejoined" showed us that Trill hosts dabbling in the affairs of their past lives is a big no no, so the answer is probably no. However, Trill taboos are not necessarily synonymous with Starfleet dress regs.

Also, it's satisfying to see that they decided to keep the tradition of putting bodies in torpedoes like Star Trek III.

Since the Mirror Universe is at the same tech level as the Federation, the unintended moral of the story is that pillaging and conquest will let you progress just as well as cooperation will.

Whoops.

Why can’t Federation starships just transport themselves

Okay, hear me out. Starships in Star Trek have every gadget and gizmo imaginable, but one thing seems to be missing. Why can’t they transport themselves? Imagine how much easier docking, landing, or even battle situations would be if the ship could just beam itself somewhere.

Is there some specific reason this isn’t possible? Like, there is a range limit, so is there also a maximum load capacity, or some other limitation on the transporter technology that makes this a no-go? If not a ship then why not a simple shuttle? And if the transport buffers can’t dematerialise themselves, who says they can’t be loaded in a torpedo or something? Pieuw pieuw beam… the way it plays out in my head is awesome.

Or is it just one of those things the writers never addressed? I don’t have much knowledge about transporter tech, but it feels like such an obvious use case. Curious if anyone knows more about this?

Something about the new US President...

Anyone else think he's a Ferengi infiltrator and that these CEOs know it?

They're all lining up with latinum and giving him oo-mox.

I guess they've all heard Rule of Acquisition 33: It never hurts to suck up to the boss.

'Seinfeld' character George Costanza once suggested in an episode for a newborn to be named "Seven". The same actor, Jason Alexander, later plays an alien in 'Voyager' trying to kidnap... Seven.

Why do people complain about Burnhams rapid rise to Captain but in episode 1 they're literally going to talk about her getting her own ship?

Also, these Klingons feel really soft to have that much of a show over one death. Despite the TNG/DS9 era Klingons' failings they don't spend two weeks messing about with the corpse. They'd be organised to destroy the Federation before the body had hit the floor. (I know it's seconds in terms of time but that's not how it feels)

ChatGPT rambles like Data

Ask ChatGPT a yes or no question and you'll get a several paragraph answer. Read it out loud and it basically sounds like Data giving TMI. In my head, whenever I hit the stop button because it's going on too long, I'm like "That's enough, thank you, Mr. Data."

Enterprise: Seven million dead

Why did Enterprise only focus on the seven million humans who died in the Xindi attack and not all loss of life including wildlife, flora, habitat, etc. Especially ironic considering the Xindi were a mixed species.

Lady Sirella must have been a serious problem for the Changeling impersonating Martok.

I assume Changelings have no odor because they don't produce pheromones, nor do they have bacteria living on them.

This could easily be bypassed by replicating body odor compounds and spraying them on itself as needed after regenerating. The average Klingon encountering the impersonator wouldn't notice the difference, but his wife certainly would.

Telepathic sensors

Okay so hear me out. We already have the technology to simulate primary human senses like sight and sound, and we haven’t even left earth orbit yet.

So it’s entirely possible that the federation, with its multiple telepathic species and hundreds of years of technological advancement, can equip their doors with sensors that can tell when people want to walk through, the way we equip doors with sensors that can see a person approaching.

I really hope replicators will be invented during my lifetime

I just had once again a sad moment because I'll never be able to taste real raktajino. All the recipes of course use earth coffee because we don't have anything else. But if we had replicators we could just program them to replicate it. And all the other alien foods as well. I want to try real Plomeek soup as well. And the possibilities are endless. I am wondering why we never see any food that doesn't exist naturally. I'd think with these possibilities some people would start developing them and we could taste flavors no one ever has before

I really just want that Raktajino, though

The terrible twos for Vulcans must be truly terrible.

My daughter is in the middle of having a meltdown and it just occurred to me that toddlers on Vulcan must be one of the biggest terrors in the universe. If Vulcans are super emotional and can only control their emotions with meditation and self control, then everything before they learn how to do that must be full of legendary tantrums. This also explains why Vulcan school children are always the worst.

Ventriloquism is probably close to a lost art by TNG times and woefully underappreciated due to communicators and holodecks.

"0.68 seconds (...) For an android, that is nearly an eternity." Compared to almost a decade of friendship with his crewmates, the Borg Queen never stood a chance.

If Data isn't sick of your face after 9 years of thinking at android speed, he must really love you.

Would very irritating to get spam mail in the post thanks to transporter technology

One could be at home and get all sorts of newsletters, ads and random mail just suddenly materialising in random places in your flat and at any time of the day.

I'm rather surprised the Ferengi didn't make holographic doctors a lot sooner.

  • Personal physician available at all times.

  • No arguments about payment.

  • Reduced chances of misdiagnosis. (See DS9 episode Body Parts)

If a Bolian had jaundice would they look like an Orion?

Sorry if this is species-ist. Would a Bolian with jaundice look like an Orion? I guess we don't know whether Bolian bilirubin would cause yellowing of the skin like it does in humans. I'm not a doctor so I really don't know, I just remember turning alarmingly yellow when I had mono in college many years ago.

Has someone created a real version of the game Dabo? Seems like a fun idea

This has probably been done and I haven't googled so forgive me if this is dumb... But has the show ever defined exactly how Dabo works? Someone should. I have a few ideas of how you could create a game with multiple spins in a round leading to a great amount of possible outcomes. Good for betting.

There also has to be a role for the "Dabo girl" more than just spinning the wheel.
