Over a year ago, in early November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Haiyan tore through the Philippines, killing between 6,000 and 7,000 people and causing US$2.86 Billion in damage. Despite a massive global relief effort, many victims have yet to recover any semblance of normal lives. So when Typhoon Hagupit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Hagupit_(2014) arrived last month, things were not going to go well.
...
The following account is from Mrs. Eda Garcia from Bais City in the Phillipines.
Translated by /u/CathyKeth, grammar corrected by /u/Fulvio55.
According to Mrs. Garcia, the wind and rain were not overly strong when the typhoon first arrived, and they were not worried. Storms are a regular occurrence in this part of the world, which people are used to dealing with. But within hours the situation had worsened to the point they could do nothing to save their homes and posessions, having been evacuated from their riverfront homes, which were then submerged by floodwaters.
“Everything was wet because the water was inside our house which we couldn’t even enter as the water was rising higher and higher as you can see in the pictures of our bridge and our house” (the blue house in the last photo in this album: http://imgur.com/gallery/WCcQS/new)
“Our bed was broken, our roof was broken, our appliances were broken, clothes are not usable anymore, and we don't have food because all stores are closed and much of our money was lost in the flood. We are all sad with this calamity, we know that we can't control this kind of thing but we are just poor people here, and this happened to us.”
With the loss of many jobs in the community, there is no money to repair the damage, replace lost clothing or buy food. The relatively lesser magnitude of the disaster, at ’only’ US$113 Million in damages and 18 deaths, has meant a more subdued reaction from governments and the international community. So there is little if any help available locally.
We know the Dogecoin community doesn’t have the resources to deal with massive disasters, but we have already changed lives in this part of the world, providing shelter and education for some of those who slipped between the cracks of society. #TyphoonDoge is an attempt to reach out and help some of the victims of this small and tight-knit community in their hour of need.
After some discussion, we believe that ten million doge is a reasonable target to aim for. This would allow primary goals such as providing food and clothing to be met, with a little extra leeway which might go towards secondary goals such as replacing/repairing basics such as bedding. This figure is not set in stone however. A shortfall would simply mean less could be achieved for the target beneficiaries, while extra donations would allow more people to be helped. Some pictures from /u/CathyKeth inspecting the damage are at http://imgur.com/a/8PTGd
A paper wallet has been set up, to avoid audit problems previously experienced with online providers moving funds to cold storage. A blockchain explorer can be used to track progress, for example:
https://bitinfocharts.com/dogecoin/address/DTL9gtVEf4JZ5Vpe1juUUT1NUfHF6Nz1f3
Funds will be progressively converted to BTC and withdrawn as Pesos as required. These withdrawals will be documented as they occur. We may be able to sell Dogecoins to the community, for either BTC or Pesos, to keep the coins off the open market, as I did with the #DogeV8. If this approach interests you, ask, and we’ll work something out.
The tipbot command to donate is:
+/u/dogetipbot DTL9gtVEf4JZ5Vpe1juUUT1NUfHF6Nz1f3 1000 doge to the #TyphoonDoge project on your behalf
EDIT: I made a typo. 'of' instead of 'from'. The pictures were taken by Cathy. That's not her in them. Apologies for the confusion. :(
Yes?
I'm in Rainier beach, where my shibes at?
I'd really appreciate it if you could throw money at this.
My friend Jennifer is losing her son to a rare genetic disorder called metachromatic leukodystrophy. Basically, the disorder eats away at the brain matter that's important for all sorts of moving. Six months ago he was running and playing like a normal three year old boy. Now he can't sit up without help. Most of the children who have the disorder die before they're five.
I can't begin to fathom even a fraction of what Oliver's family is going through. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry. I have a two year old little boy myself, and I know I'm going to be a mess when he so much as catches a bad cold. I desperately want to help this family get as much love and wonder out of the time they have left as they can, and the dogecoin community is one of the most beautifully generous groups of people I can think of. I don't really know how this sort of thing works. I don't know what steps I would have to take to get this going. But whatever I need to do, let me know and I'll get right on it.
Thanks in advance.
You may have read a post or two from a lady in Toronto who's husband died and left her a USB key with 122 BTC on it.
Most shibes are calling it a scam, but if she's legit, her obvious lack of Reddit skills aren't helping any. Stuff like posting the same basic thing, hanging around for an hour, then disappearing for a week don't boost confidence after all.
So, I suggested she come here, and arrange a meetup with someone local to see if we can help and/or substantiate the story.
First step is knowing who's available. The map only shows one Toronto shibe, but I know most of you guys haven't pinned yourselves on there yet. (See why its necessary?)
In desperate need of a bus pass and food to last me till the second thats when i get paid so if you possibly could look out for me ill do the same.thx for reading
Shoot me a message :)
Hello,
I've moved from the city to small village to avoid paying rent and to build something of my own. I've inherited a old shattered house from my grandparents, but it needs a lot of work. I've tried to get a loan from the bank but I was denied as I don't have a "regular" job. I work as a freelancer. In the future I plan to grow vegetables and maybe do something in agriculture, as well as help the local community with tech stuff. You can check the repairs progress here: http://imgur.com/a/fj6CF
This is the list with "to do / to purchase" and with "purchased/paid" > https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18IgKNj9Er0NYzFDPEQXqwc4OcZW4VNSC-KW0d5rLpCo/edit#gid=0
This was also submitted to humbledoge here: http://humbledoge.org/projects/002/index.html
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you very much!
Most of you will be aware of /u/atmalik_hesap's troubles, which directly led to the formation of ShibeNet.
At the time, I had to reach outside Reddit, to an american living in Bursa who I contacted on FaceBook. He helped Eki, and eventually let him move in, which meant no more sleeping at the bus station, and he was able to get a job once he was stable.
Well, the bad luck continues. I've just been talking to Jason, the flatmate, because Eki dropped out of sight. His computer is probably broken again.
Jason tells me he's locked out of Turkey until October, and Eki now has to pay the full costs of the apartment, which amounts to some 700 TL a month.
He is offering to repay 325 TL for his share of the rent in October, once he can get back in and back to work, if we can raise it. But the problem is with Eki offline, we've got no way to get it to him.
This is precisely the sort of thing ShibeNet was created for. We need someone on the ground to do a welfare check, and to coordinate the money so that they don't both end up on the street, and Jason loses all his stuff.
I'm open to suggestions on how to proceed. I don't think we currently have any other members in Turkey, do we?
Hey shibes. I'm joining your group. I want to help with charitable causes and other projects. I'm also interested in helping others with developing social enterprises that will do some good for a community plus be a good business model.
i made a donation to cryptunes and they said that they would give us a free ad for our subreddit, just to help get the word out on what we do and perhaps point people who would like to join us our way, anyone mildly artistic or have any ideas what it should promote/say?
this isnt something we have to do but since they were offering i thought it might help us out a bit :D
Hello guys,
I've been a shibe for months now and have been loving the ride. A bit about myself. I am in Australia finishing up my Masters in Electrical Engineering and Business in a month or so. I have internship/tutoring/research experience and thus, my resume looks decent.
However, I am finding it extremely difficult to get a full time position when I graduate. I've applied to loads of places but have received rejects from all places. The most common reason being I don't have a permanent residency. I do have a two year work visa which will begin in August and also eligible to apply for a PR now which I will soon but the whole process takes months. And the other reason being the market is experiencing a slump and therefore they aren't hiring anyone or hiring just citizens.
So, as a result of all this, I've been extremely low and disillusioned about everything since I've been doing whatever I've been asked to ensure a full time job. Any advice on what I could do would be very very useful. I think Aussie shibes would be in a better position for this one. Any help about what steps I could take which I might not know of or if you know someone who could help or refer .. anything would be lovely.
Thanks for reading and have a lovely day :)
You all know me, right?
i am the homeless, puffy legged TurkShibe, who you have helped a lot. now there is another shibe who is in IMMEDIATE danger, we have to save him, not because we know who he/she is, not because we are rich but because together we can do this.
our friend and a good shibe /u/Fulvio55 posted this Please read and see what we can do.
Love
Eki.

Hello! Most of you may know me, some may not. I am hosting Shibenet.org and I am attempting to be as active in the community as possible right now.
I am working on a project for the Shibenet community that I think may be of great assistance in getting the word out for Shibenet, and also assisting others in the process. However, I may not seem too active on the subreddit for the time being. I will still be here to be your lovely moderator, but my posts may being to wane down. Just know I am here, and I love you all!
Some of my activity may be declined, as I have just been diagnosed with an incurable viral blood disease and I am trying my best to undergo treatment, but it's quite expensive. So I will be working more often to try and pay my medical bills. You guys all mean the world to me, along with Shibenet, so I will DEFINITELY keep working for the shibenet cause!
Thank you all for being behind me, and if anyone needs anything don't hesitate to contact me on IRC (irc.freenode.org #ShibeNet) or message me on reddit. Thanks again guys!
~Matt
Looking at our ShibeNet Location Map (which you've already added yourself to, right?), its pretty obvious that most of us are in North America, Europe or Australasia. There are vast empty areas where all the poor billions are.
Now, I have a project on the back burner to spread the word of Doge to the poor masses, but it needs at least one local shibe to get involved and help develop the idea.
So if you are, or know of, a shibe in places like the Indian Subcontinent, Africa, South America, and would like to try and make people's lives better using Dogecoins, now's a good time to speak up.
For this idea to work, it will need internet access, obviously, and access to computing able to handle wallets (that cuts iOS out, at least until the blockchain wallets arrive). Part of this experiment is to find out exactly how little infrastructure we can get away with.
There will also be the need for local exchanges, which could be as basic as a ShibeNet member willing to swap fiat for doge in person, or development of a more automated process.
