Dell 730 with Nvidia RTX x060

I just bought a Dell R730 and would like to add an RTX GPU into it, but the 2060 or 3060 is not in the list of supported GPUs (attached). I don't really care if it's supported, but rather; will it work? Does anyone have this or know if this will work?

Need some Help!

Hey All,

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right place, but I wanted a bit of help and guidance.

So long story short, I am a part of DJ/Producing trio. We used to have a studio with our main PC that held all our programs, files, and music. We ended up letting go of the studio, so we had to of course put all our equipment in storage. I am currently still using our main PC to work on projects and such. We will typically just google drive to share projects back and forth and I am looking for a more efficient way.

So I started to do some research, we were looking to create like our own server or cloud. The idea we want is to have one hub storage where we are all able to access on our own computers. I know when it comes to plug ins, we won’t be able to share cause it must be authorized on each individual PCs. But the idea is more for samples folder/projects/music.

I was looking into a NAS, but I assume it is only applicable to the users in my home being able to access it. I know many would say just stay with google drive or like dropbox. But we wanted to see what other options there were. Keep in mind of a SHIT ton of samples/projects/music and were always finding new stuff. So we would rather find something where are able to just drag and drop our one hub storage and we all have access on our own devices.

Any guidance would be helpful on where to start.

Should I get a NAS or Media server for my needs?

I am trying to figure out If I need a NAS (like the F4-424 Pro from TerraMaster) or a media server.

I have 100 Windows laptops, I need each of them to be able to look through a library and choose video files to view. The videos will be around 1080p-1440p at 60fps (at the most). At peak times I need around 100 laptops to each be able to choose and view a video file on the same network. I was looking at the NAS because it's pretty powerful but I'm not sure If I need to bump up to a media server. Any advice or recommendations would be great.

Mini PC + DAS setup

I have a 'Beelink N95' mini pc whose sole purpose is to run the 'Plex Media Server' 24/7.

The computer has an M.2 2280 SSD connection and a 2.5' connection.

The manufacturer claims that the size of the drives can be up to 2TB each, meaning a total of 4TB storage.

This is not enough for me and I am looking for a good and inexpensive solution to add storage.

I was thinking of a DAS with room for 2-4 drives and using RAID features.

I saw the following product:
'MAIWO 2 Bay HDD Docking Station SATA To USB 3.0 Hard Drive Docking Station for 3.5 Inch Hard Drive Case with 4 RAID Modes Case'

Is this something that could serve the purpose?

The most critical question is, is connecting drives via USB reliable?

As I mentioned, the computer runs 24/7 and I'm afraid this setup will be an obstacle.

If there are other solutions to my problem, I would be happy to hear them.

Looking for Server Providers

Hi,

I am seeking to lease a substantial quantity of servers (Root Server, VDS, Bare Metal) whichever package is cheaper, each equipped with a minimum configuration of 8-core processors, 16GB RAM, 256GB storage, and 1Gbps network links, along with a bandwidth allocation of 5-10TB. The desired range for this bulk order is between 100 and 500 units, depending on price. Best deal I have is in the €20-€30 so far. Can anyone recommend some providers please?

Newb question: what are the rules regarding what you should and shouldn’t wire into a patch panel

I’ve tried to Google this but haven’t found anything.

Should I be wiring my incoming internet connection into the patch panel?

Current setup (no server cabinet) Wall Jack -> Mikrotik ONT -> Router/Wifi

New setup (new server rack) Wall Jack -> Patch Panel (Port 24) -> Mikrotik ONT -> Router -> Managed switch -> Access Points

Am I overthinking this?

Are there any hard and fast rules I should know about?

Any recommendations for TSL 1.0

I have some legacy code that needs TLS 1.0. I'm in the middle of updating the code APIs to run on newer computers. But, I need the alerts to still go out for now. These are not even close to data sensitive. I need a company that still supports 1.0. Any recommendations?

Possible to have R740xd with 3.5" LFF HDDs and NVMe drives?

I am considering buying a Dell PowerEdge R740xd server with SAS/SATA backplane(s) and 3.5" bays for installing several HDDs for main storage. This standard backplane configuration is not NVMe-enabled, but I also want to have 2 NVMe (RAID 1) drives for high-performance computing on the same server and BOSS M.2 card for OS boot. I have asked a retailer about such a configuration, but they said it was hard to achieve and almost impossible, especially with 4x3.5 rear and 2x3.5 mid bays added. I guess the main issue could be the lack of physical space in the chassis and the cooling, but if only 3 HDD drives are installed and a Dell high-performance cooling kit is used and a 2 x 1100 W power supply, wouldn't it still be impossible?

Do you have practical experience with such a setup and have you faced any issues with it?

EDIT:

The OS will be AlmaLinux 9. I plan to install the NVMe SSDs by using 2 U.2 to PCIe adapters such as Delock NVMe SSD PCIe x4 Controller 1x U.2 SFF 2,5" SFF-8639 Adapter. Using a multi-slot card could also be an option. I give this single-slot adapter example because that is what is currently available to be installed with the server at the vendor. I would need to order another one separately if I want a different one. For the BOSS the adapter card I plan to use is Dell BOSS 2x M.2 2280 SATA SSD AHCI Raid Storage Controller PCIe incl. 2x 120GB SATA M.2 SSD.

My plan is to use the BOSS M.2 card with two SATA M.2 120 GB drives included only for OS boot and installing packages there. For the main workload which will be high and sustained, I plan to use 2 NVMe U.2 Samsung PM9A3 drives (in soft RAID 1) via two Delock NVMe SSD PCIe x4 Controller 1x U.2 SFF 2,5" SFF-8639 Adapters. The reason why I want to have M.2 OS boot card and NVMe drives separately is because I can benefit from the speeds of the NVMe drives and have more resilience by having the OS installed on independent drives. Finally, the 3.5" HDD drives are only to be used for (cold) storage.

I guess I can replace one of those SSD arrays (M.2 BOSS array or NVMe array) with a SAS or SATA SSD array which would be natively supported by the server's drive bays (the use of a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter for the SSDs is likely to be needed though). But I would rather first know whether my plan is possible before going with such an alternative option.

Looking to host a 9 player turn based strategy game on a used PC, need some help on specs

Hello everyone! I'm going to be hosting a 9 player Old World Game (Old World the 4x game similar to the Civ series, not the Warhammer game w/similar name). I posted the reqs below.

We will be playing on a simultaneous turn mode where all 9 players take a turn every 24 hours.

I'm looking to buy a used desktop PC and use it as a server for this, preferably $100 or under if possible.

As I understand it GPU will not be important. What CPU and RAM specs should I be looking for maintain stability into the late game? I'm thinking above 3.5ghz and 16ram but not sure what I should prioritize.

Appreciate any input!

I need a NAS capable of streaming video to up to 100 pc's

I need a storage solution probably a NAS, that can hold and stream 1080-1440p videos for up to 100 people simultaneously (on same network). If anybody has any recommendations, any advise will be useful.

Conclusion: Getting a "video editing" NAS that can store and allow clients to access and stream videos to their devices. Like clicking on a video file in the NAS library and playing it without downloading it onto the client machine.

Server for Small Business

Hi everyone! I'm seeking guidance on a server for my two businesses. While I am technically inclined, I lack detailed knowledge of server hardware. I operate two event companies in the same building and need to upgrade our server. I contacted our IT company, but I'm unsure if their quote is reasonable or if the server they proposed suits our needs.

We have around 15-20 machines on our network at any given time. For one of my companies, we run our POS system off the server, which requires solid-state drives, at least 12 or more cores and dedicated 64GB of RAM. Otherwise, there are no major requirements.

The server quoted by my IT company is a Dell PowerEdge T560 Server Intel Xeon Silver 4509Y 2.6G 8C/16T 16GT/s 23M Cache Turbo HT (125W) DDR5-4400 -32GB RDIMM 5600MT/s Dual Rank - 1.92TB SSD SATA Read Intensive 6Gbps 512 2.5in Hot-plug AG Drive 3.5in HYB CARR 1 DWPD - Windows Server 2022 Standard 16CORE FI No Med No CAL Multi Language for $14,277.55. Additionally, they recommended two Western Digital 4TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drives with backup software and password protection for $263.98.

I'd appreciate any insights into whether this server meets our needs and if the backup solution is reasonable. My IT company mentioned that while the cost is high, they believe this setup will be very fast and should last longer than the typical 5-year replacement window for servers.... I am just looking for a second opinion before pulling the trigger on this. Thank you in advance!

[DIY server build]: sync two PSU without 24pin connector?

Hello there,

Context:

Im rebuilding the neighbor's kid's laptop to a server and i need your help on a matter regarding power supplies. He obviously want to do it on a budget. I'm trying my best to help with the budget without him knowing as well 😅☺️.

The problem:

I disassembled my old laptop and removed the motherboard to convert it into a small server. I also got a mini PCIe SATA expansion card with 4 SATA ports to connect HDDs. The mini pcie is placed instead of the wifi card.

For power, I have an old 12V 15A brick power supply with a circular output (dont know the special connector name) while the laptops will use their original charger that outputs 19v 3A. The laptop operates without a battery and is connected to the charger 24/7. the PSUs (the laptop charger + the brick power supply) would share the same 220v input from the same socket using a common c14 inlet.

However, I'm having trouble syncing the two power supplies. By sync i mean make the hdd power supply power upon powering the laptop 👍☺️. Turning the on button would turn both PSUs but if for whatever reason the laptop does a soft shutdown (software guided shutdown - sudo shutdown now) the hdd psu would still be on providing the hdd with constant power.

Same applies on soft start up such wake on lan ☺️.

The add2psu solves this exact problem by getting a signal from 15 pin sata from the main motherboard to signal to the secondary psu to turn off/on.

The add2psu requires a 24-pin connector from the secondary PSU, which the brick psu doesn't have..

Any suggestions on how to sync these power supplies without a 24-pin connector?

The only solution that i see is to buy a cheap pc power supply and use it to power the hdd. But the case he chose is very limited on size 🥲.

how you can help?

Suggest a solution. Avoid discouraging arguments such as whyyy just buy new server!". He loves hardware problems we both are learning a lot and i want to encourage him to solve problems ☺️👍

Thanks for the help in advance 🙂

Edit: small question one the side: the hdds require only 12v or 12v & 5v? As far as i know hdd would work fine on 12v or am i mistaken?

Server comparison

Hey guys, I’m new here and I have a question, I currently run a small server on linode for 12 dollars monthly and it has 1 physical CPU core , 2GB ram, with 50GB storage and 2TB transfer But I came across Contabo with a plan of $12.50 monthly but offers 4 virtual cpu cores, 8GB ram, 800gb ssd and transfer of 32TB, I’m curious why the price is almost the same but the features are very different, especially considering the physical CPU and the Virtual CPU, which one would perform better ? To run my web apps using docker and running my database all on Linux. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

What is the best way to not reveal my IP/location with a Minecraft server?

I have a server for me and my friends that I run on my PC. I made it the typical way you make a small Minecraft sever. (Port forwarding, downloading the server.jar).

However, I don't really like having my IP as the server IP.

Basically I'm asking what would be the simplest and best way to make it so people couldn't get my real life address and IP from playing the server, and how I might go about doing that.

I've heard things about 'Cloudflare tunnels'. I don't have experience with those, but that might be the way to go. Not sure though, so that's why I'm making a post here.

Thanks in advance!

What kind of GPU cards/chips and sound chips/cards did server OSes run with

It is me from the cpu question a while back, I have completed that fully (some had to be made up for upgrade gaps ( with all of the resources you have provided me with, so thank you for your help but I do have a question for GPU’s and soundcards.

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/servers/comments/1bo4zoh/what_generations_of_cpus_were_used_in_servers/

I wanted to ask about GPU’s and sound cards because it was easy taking care of RAM as it’s just a storage value (possibly speed if I want to add it too) and fans because I have found a video where someone had lots of fans for testing so I used their video for my research but I have a hard time trying to find any GPU’s and sound cards for servers, 98 and earlier only shows workstations and special audio equipment that uses a 98 and earlier pc when I am looking for cards/chips that go into standard rack servers in datacenters, it is only going to be used on a certain motherboard upgrade path in the game.

Hard drives will be easy like RAM but sound and graphics cards will be hard to research, I am guessing sound cards will be the same ones like on pc’s for games, I only need 5 soundcards and 5 GPU’s per OS, 1-2 can overlap if needed because each OS can only have so many pieces of upgrading hardware.

I have compiled a list of the graphics cards that will be used in my suggestion, sound cards not included, there will be 3 levels of sound chips, the first making beeps and boops, the second chip making very compressed sounds of the usual OS sounds and the third one making the normal version of the OS sounds.

GPU list, the OS names are the ones from the game:

Edit: grid could not be put in the post, it ended up being a massive wall of text

Would this server be considered an OK price

I found a server for sale Its a lenovo thinksystem sr650 dual intel xeon silver 4114 8 1tb hd and 96GB ram.

And the asking price is $1300 Au ~ 861.00 USD

I'm planning on putting in a moderate graphics card I have laying around for 3d rendering and data processing and hopefully expecting it to be my main unit for a least a few years. So if you are able to help recommend anything like if it's not a ok deal or direct me if there is other stuff that maybe better. That would be great thanks.

Dell T630

Hi Guys Noob alert here, I have a Dell T630 that I run unraid and a home assistant VM. Could I connect dual monitors to my machine and run it as a PC? Or does it need a GPU?

If I can run the monitors, what's a good VM to use that people recommend? The PC I have now is Windows but the thing is old and slow so I was hoping the server would be a faster unit. I assume most people hate Windows though anyway, and to be honest I've never used anything else.

Budget builds

I was looking to start doing some homelab or virtual machine stuff, and I've got some money set aside for a decent build. I briefly considered an SBC cluster, but their performance often doesn't compare to even cheap old rack-mounted setups. I'm reasonably well-versed in this area, but I can't decide between the two or what I would buy.

I don't currently have the gear to pull off what I want. Would I be better off building this off a decent PC build, a cluster, or an inexpensive server? What recommendations do you guys have for servers?

Can an x99 motherboard be used on an HP Z820?

My hp z820 motherboard stopped working, and replacing it is quite expensive and I saw that the Chinese x99 boards are cheaper, I want to see if an x99 can be put in the HP z820 cabinet since there are holes to put another board small, but I don't know if the x99 board is compatible with my power supply. Has anyone tried it?

follow up of my previous posts on here about my homework

im slowly getting there but these are the specs so far that i've chosen to make a server that cna handle 100 vms for a company. Intel® Xeon® Platinum 8450H cpu
X13SEI-F motherboard
might get some kingston ram cards that be up to 128-256 gb of ram
obviously some 2tb or 4tb ssd
for the vm server/platform it would be Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019
motherboard has some ethernet ports..
Please comment below with suggestions, as I'm not sure enough if it is good or not

Looking for a chipset/motherboard for my needs

I'm looking to build a TrueNAS Scale home server. This is what I'm planning:

A motherboard with 3 M.2 NVMe slots and going to be using this 4 slot pcie expansion card (requires x4x4x4x4 bifurcation). This is how I plan on allocating the nvme drives:

1 x Boot Drive

2 x RAIDZ (3 M.2 NVMe's each)

I'm also going to be using a GPU for hardware transcoding. So I'm struggling to look for a mATX motherboard with 2 x16 slots (one with x4x4x4x4 bifurcation support), and 3 M.2 NVMe slots. I know it's a very specific criteria, but maybe I'm just not doing a good job searching or there are tools I'm not aware of.

Any motherboards I'm missing?

Questions regarding how a CPU impacts a server, and other things

Hello! I happened to have some parts lying around. So I decided to build a server PC. I know absolutely nothing about servers, and got to wondering if the PC I'm building will even be effective?

The thought started when reflecting on how long it would take to pay itself off, considering I frequently bought servers from those server hosting websites. Stuff for games. Minecraft, v rising, valheim, etc. They *the website hosts) boast about how great their CPUs are. And that made me wonder if the CPU I have, the catalyst of me even making the darn thing.. was any good?

It's an i7-8700k. I'm just going to list what's on the box? And maybe that helps. 3.7ghz, 12mb cache, 6 cores

Also, is 64gb of ram overkill for something like this? Or are there scenarios where that much is needed? The servers we make frequently have like 15 people. Also, is overclocking the CPU a good idea?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub-reddit, and thanks a bunch!

Turning a laptop into a server?

No idea if this is the right sub at all but here we go. I recently messed up my laptop and the keyboard+usb ports dont work, but all the hardware (cpu gpu ram etc) is all good, so I had the idea to turn it into a lil mini server, would probably mostly use it for game servers. Im pretty experienced with computers and such, but really don't know where to start here. Assuming I would get rid of everything except the system board and probably hook it up to some power supply? Just looking for some guidance here, thanks!
