So I got a Dell PowerEdge yesterday and it's been working fine until a couple minutes ago I powered it on again and it started powering on and off again and again i unplugged it but I tried again and it did the same thing. How do I fix this
Hey, so I am usually able to connect to my remote server via SSH (as recently as last night).
But all of a sudden I'm not able to connect and keep getting this error message.
It's not just one server, but all servers that I usually connect to.
I tried figuring out by googling, but no luck so far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So I'm upgrading my and my wife's PC's. I thus will have some extra parts and will be a SSD a case amd power supply away from a full PC. Specs would be 3800x 32GB 3600 trident z neo ram (have 32 more gb of this ) X570 Taichi Mother board I have a 5700xt res devil gpu to put in I'd get probably a 2Tb m.2 Any 750 or 1000 watt PSU and case I can find for cheapish
I will be running mostly game servers I turn on and off when needed such as Arc, core keeper, Conan, mine craft, Space engineers ect.
I already have a network NAS so no need for that, but I may want to add some security cameras at a later time.
I'm new to this side of things, should I grab a 5900x to put in? Will I be able to run all of these servers one at a time? Is there a chance I could say run 2 if my wife and I choose different games to play?
Is it worth adding the second set of 32gb to this? Would I be better of getting more ram in 2 sticks same as if it was for my gaming PC?
Last question, do i want windows on this? I feel like it would be the easiest way since I'm only hosting steam dedicated servers and it's all set up for windows.
I tried making a server out of my windows 10 computer using XAMPP but I just can't connect to it, no matter what IP I use
Guide:

Out of curiosity, which operating system would technically be the most power efficient for running a server? Whether it's a Linux distro, a flavor of BSD, or even any other non-UNIX operating system, which OS would be the near definitive answer?
I've theorized options such as Tinycore or any lightweight flavor of Linux, but I wonder if there would be a more sophisticated answer than that.
What do you guys think/know?
In my HP Proliant DL380 G5 when I try to start it up it says that some of the fans are missing. Is there an option so that I don't need all thee fans running?
Hello everyone. Server noob here. I have a Dell Poweredge T430 server that's to be used in our small office. There aren't any Hard Disks in the server. What kind of hard disks do I have to use? I don't get it. SAS drives doesn't seem to be readily available and there aren't many options. Do I have to buy get the server tray too.. How many hard disks do I have to get? There are 8 slots for the same.. thank you Edit: there is no slot for nvme ssd.
We are looking to buy some “white box” (supermicro, gigabyte and similar companies) new hardware to replace an existing spinning rust based storage server with horrible IOPS because we got stuck before I joined the company and got locked in on a bad hardware choice with TrueNAS enterprise.
Also looking for two new VMware hosts.
Budget for all flash based storage server is about 30k
Budget for each VMware hosts is about 15k
So looking at ~ 60k between the three servers.
Specced some stuff out with thinkmate.com but in the past with previous companies they have generally been more on the expensive side with slow builds.
Requested quotes from servers direct but they are taking a while to come in.
We are not as worried about support contracts etc. We have the expertise to troubleshoot in house if something goes wrong. We also utilize and thoroughly test our disaster recovery which goes offsite to an underground colo datacenter with VMware hosts ready to go in case of any major issues. We also replicate our backups to a third location (Amazon S3 compliant object storage - Wasabi)
Any vendors you guys can recommend. Happy to provide basics on what we are looking for if you need more info.
Thanks in advance!
I had some issues with the SD card redundancy failing, then both cards showed "failed" on the Removable Flash Media page. I formatted them, and replaced them with different cards, but nothing wants to appear on the page anymore. I've reseated the IDSDM module as well with no luck. The only thing that appears now is VFLASH SD, but that's it.
This is the first chance I've had to poke around on this server, and I'm trying to get it all up and running properly, but this seems to be the current issue I'm running into..
Dell R630. All firmware updated. Trying numerous times to install Ubuntu from USB onto SSD drive. I have tried all BIOS/raid settings. Every time I get a successful desktop, it says to remove the USB and hit enter. I do, then it restarts and does not work. I either get a grub screen, or error message screen reading "error disk hd0,gpt2 not found" or "error: you need to load the kernel first" or "error: attempt to read or write outisde of disk hd0". Can anyone help me? I have tried it with RAID off, with RAID on and virtual disk created, with SATA = AHCI, with Boot - BIOS and boot = UEFI. Nothing works so far....I have used the same USB drive to install on a R420, worked fine no problems. Tried all the same BIOS settings from R420 to R630, I get the problems mentioned. Not sure what to do.
hello, i bought an dell poweredge t310 about 2 years ago for 100€, i first used it as an Minecraft Server, but it sucked, now its just crying in the corner of my "computer room" because i didnt used it since then and i used some rude language for it. i recently lost 100GB worth of data so i wondered if making it a NAS media server for us would be a good idea. i wondered about maxxing it out, but how much storage i can give to this boi? what about CPU upgrade? RAM?
do you have any other idea for making it good guy again?
Hey everyone! Super excited about my first real server setup and would love some guidance!

The T620 seems like a beast compared to my Pi, and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities. Any guidance from experienced homelabbers would be greatly appreciated.
Hey everyone. I’m using a raspberry pi 5 to host a minecraft server for some friends and once I started port forwarding the Minecraft server and my ssh port I get these notifications in the xfinity app. It’s pretty annoying.
I have whitelist enabled on the server so no unwarranted players have joined. The mc server and ssh ports I changed from standard ones (25565 & 22). I have fail2ban and ufw (firewall) with only ssh and mc server connections allowed running on the pi. I also have ssh keys on my personal devices to ssh, password authentication is turned off. What other actions can I take to stop these “attacks” or can anyone shed light on why this is happening?
I see a lot of tech enthusiasts and content creators talk about making a home server using an old laptop, phone or, tablet, but what is it good for?
I only need the server to test run my websites that I work on and I do that using Apache localhost why would I need a separate device as a home server, what else can I use it for?
I have 2 routers:
one from ISP A , fibe 1gbps speed and will be the primary internet source.
Second from ISP B, 4G 20mbps and will be used as secondary source if ever ISP A internet goes down.
I have a cisco switch to link all my devices/servers that has 2 lan inputs.
Is there any way to handle the automatic switching? I.e if ISP A can no longer connect to internet, it uses ISP B router.
I'm very familiar with custom builds for consumer PC but have zero experience with servers.
I'm wondering what's the best way to go for the first time:
Also which one is best: desktop, rack, hpe etc.
I'm planning to run multiple VM 24/7 with medium load on average. I'll need atleast 12 cores, 32gb ram, 2tb ssd
I'm looking to build or buy the absolute best server or workstation I can, money being no object (within reason. It will be for homelab or my experimental tasks use, primarily for [Workloads: AI/ML training, complex simulations, large-scale storage, etc.]
I've done some initial research and have come across these models:
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR675 V3
Supermicro SYS-210GP-DNR
HPE Apollo 6500 Gen10 Plus
ProX PC Pro Maestro 10IGPS
Dell PowerEdge XE9680
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V2
Supermicro SYS-420GP-TN2T
ASUS ESC8000 G4
Gigabyte G482-Z51
HP Z8 Fury G5 Workstation
I'm open to both pre-built and custom solutions. My main priorities are:
[Priority 1: e.g., Maximum GPU compute]
[Priority 2: e.g., Reliability and uptime]
[Priority 3: e.g., Scalability for future needs]
[Priority 4: e.g., Quiet operation (it's in my home!)]
My Questions:
Of the models listed (or any others you'd recommend), which would be the best fit for my needs, and why?
Are there any specific configurations or components I should prioritize (e.g., specific GPUs, CPUs, cooling solutions)?
For a home environment, are there any particular challenges I should be aware of (power consumption, noise, cooling)?
If building a custom system, what are some reputable vendors or resources you'd recommend?
Any advice on setting up and managing such a powerful machine in a home setting?
I’d really appreciate any insights from experts or those who’ve built high-end workstations/servers before. Thanks in advance! Budget: $50k+ limited to $200k Electricity cost will be: 0 for my case and setup as I have some sort of arrangements
I'm planning to setup a home server and only have experience with building consumer pc. I was wondering if there are any major advantages of a traditional server vs a high end pc. The PC will stay on 24/7 with medium load on average. Periodically high load.
PC: I7 13900k . Z790 . 64gb ddr5 . 2tb samsung 980 pro . Liquid cooling 360mm
Server:
HP Proliant or Dell Poweredge or Supermicro rack . 2x Xeon or Epyc cpu . 64gb ddr4 ecc ram . 2tb ssd enterprise
I'm looking to build a server for modded Minecraft and other games to play with friends. I've done a little bit of research, and so far I was thinking of getting an i3-12100F for the CPU and 16GB of 3200MHz RAM. Would this be too overkill, and what would you guys recommend?
For context, I'm very familiar with setting up Linux vms on Google cloud and interacting with them.
I have a spare home pc with 16 cores, 64gb ram and 2tb nvme drive. Note this is a consumer pc and not a server with ecc ram etc.
I wanted to turn this pc into a server and basically be able to partition it into 4 virtual machines, each with 3 cores, 12gb ram and 100gb storage.
I am hoping to get a quick guide on how to do this, which free open-source software is best etc.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thinking of getting a server or NAS mainly to run my own DeepSeek R1 at home, how much I'm going to spend minimum?
I am looking to upgrade my UnRaid server, and carry over a Broadcom HBA 9400-16i with an 8x PCIe connector, and additionally I want it to include a PCIe x16 slot for a GPU to support remote gaming.
Nice to have is the ability to support 2 or more SSD's in M.2 slots, but a minimum of 1.
I know processors are limited in the number of PCIe data lanes they can support, and the motherboards then offer various configurations to split those out.
What I don't know is which processor socket and processor combinations have the ability to support the number of PCIe lanes I need.
Turning to Reddit with the hope I can get clarification on that.

I am renting a server for my work use. I mostly need high single core score cpu and high read/write speed. I am confused about storage. It will be running debian 12. this is what i have so far.
Now i have 2 options for storage
2x 1.92TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe U.2 SSD
2x 1.92TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD
I am not sure what U.2 is or if its better or worse than M.2, i am not even sure if U.2 or M.2 would effect speed. Please help me choose what storage option to go with
From myworkpace, my boss told me he didnt want it and to recycle it. I asked if i could have it and he said go nuts. i have a very basic knowledge of servers but plan to use it as a media center at home.
Any advice on how/where to start?
I have a Dell R740xd that has multiple hard drives installed, but it is not reading any of them. There is no OS currently installed, looking to install Ubuntu. I have selected RAID in the BIOS settings, but in the settings for the drives, it sho2s that it's not seeing any drives. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try? TIA.
I've been given a set of specs for colo'ing a server in a friend's rack and I am debating what to buy. Looking to spend $2000 to $6k, located in the Seattle area.
Server hardware is not my expertise, and I would prefer to get something that won't be a nightmare to get UEFI updates for (heard HPE gates these by support contract) and works well (eg: sluggish AM5 AsRock Rack motherboards).
What hardware should I be looking at?
Must haves:
- 2x SFP28 for 25GbE
- Dual PSUs
- Either 1U and 125W total power use or 2U 250W
Nice to haves:
- Dual M.2 slots for RAID1 SSDs
- Spare PCIe slot for an accelerator card (Nvidia A2, L4 or similar)
- DDR5
- x86-64 CPU
- Drive bays for future expansion
I want to host a dumbed down llm on a local server. I have to buy the necessary hardware for the same. I was considering raspberry pi 5 16gb but a friend suggested buying a used desktop like dell optiplex would be better and cheaper. Any suggestions?
