Do you think if enough of us emailed the Conservancy they would replace the many dead lightbulbs in the street lamps along the main loop? There are also quite a few dead lightbulbs on the reservoir track. It’s amazing how dark it is (especially on the res and in the north part of the park) where lights are out.
Edit: I can’t find a direct email but please use this link to submit a form! Thanks everyone! https://www.centralparknyc.org/contact-us
I have been doing strength training with a PT for a while but now getting into running as well. Totally new to it - did my first run on the treadmill in a while - ran 4 miles over an hour.
I am thinking of signing up for a group training with an eye towards a half marathon.
Two options I have found so far are
I live in Upper East Side (70s). Looking for a high quality program and can spend.
I was wondering what would you recommend - either with these two establishments or some other option?
NYRR has a '5K' membership option (cost: $5,000) which provides guaranteed, non-complimentary entry to all NYRR races, including the marathon.
Premise: Given the value of your free time, it would be less expensive to simply pay $5,000 upfront rather than completing the 9+1 program.
Assumptions:
Calculation:
5K | 9+1 (NYC Resident) | 9+1 (Exurbs) | 9+1 (Far Away) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Membership | 5,000 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
Race Registration (A) | - | 405 | 405 | 405 |
Transportation (B) | - | 58 | 298 | 500 |
Hotel (C) | - | - | - | 1,000 |
Cost of Free Time - Travel (D) | - | 800 | 1,600 | 2,800 |
Cost of Free Time - Event (F) | - | 800 | 800 | 800 |
Total Cost | 5,000 | 2,123 | 3,163 | 5,565 |
(A) Average cost of $45 per race x 9 races (no fee for volunteering)
(B) NYC: $5.8 per event (10 total) for round trip subway fare. Exurbs: $24 round trip off-peak via commuter rail, plus $5.80 round trip subway fare. Far Away: $50 for gas/tolls/parking
(C) For people who live far away, a hotel is required for 5 events at an average of $200 per night
(D) NYC: 1 hour travel time each way. Exurbs: 2 hour travel time each way. Far Away: 3.5 hour travel time each way.
(E) Events are an average of a 2 hour time commitment from arrival to departure.
Conclusion: If your free time is worth $40/hour then for most situations it is not cheaper to pay $5,000 upfront for the marathon.
Bonus: If the only variable is the value of your free time, what is the breakeven point for each option (to the nearest dollar):

Hi, runners! I saw the weather forecast today and it shows there will be snow on saturday and rain on sunday. Do you think the race will be performed on sunday?
Is that I'm seemingly slower on flat ground then I am on hill, whether up or down, whenever I run flat my legs start to hurt way easier, I've timed it, it takes about 18-20 seconds to run the distance on flat while 15-17 seconds to run on hill, it's not exactly the same distance, a little bogger give or take, but the point remains, I'm not as effective on flat ground, why is that?
Has any lifeguard volunteered for NYRR as a medical volunteer? I submitted an application because I have CPR & AED for Professional Rescuers, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens Licenses, and was wondering if anyone has done it before. I was curious to try because I see that they will take EMT students and the certifications are slightly similar.
It would appear the route has been posted on Strava by NYRR! As best I can see no changes for this year:

Above links isn’t right will see can I find a better way to post!
Ran Manhattan 10K yesterday and got a PR (1:01:30). Newer to running and training and want to get advice on what I can do to improve over the next 6 weeks for the NYC United Half and eventually the RBC Brooklyn Half in May. Also curious what sort of time should I be going for / what is possible given my current ability. Appreciate any thoughts!
Edit (additional info): I finished the 10K in 1:01:30. Prior to Sunday, I ran the Joe K 10K January 11th (3 weeks prior) with a 1:05:15 finish time.
I've been training for about 4-5 weeks around 10 miles per week and recently started using Runna, which now includes a long run, easy run, and some form of tempol interval training.
Apologies if the title is confusing- I’ve done my 9+1 which should guarantee me eligibility for this years NYC Marathon. I will likely also be able to do 9+1 for 2026.
If for some reason I had to defer this year until next year, what does that then mean for my eligibility for the completion of 9+1 towards 2026? Can I then just defer that one to ‘27 or will I have wasted the effort to qualify?
Anyone here know about how Berlin handles race packet pick ups? Like do they stop at a certain date. Example like the marathon would be on a Sunday, do they allow packet pick up on that Saturday as the last day? Thanks
Anyone have any advice for running 2 half marathons within 6 weeks of each other? Very fortunate to have received special opportunities to run both the NYC Half and Maybelline Women’s half. How do you structure your training to keep both races in mind?
Four Miler with some extra fun activities in addition to just the run in support of FLAG Art Foundation
There's a longest football throw competition before the race from 8-8:30am with a prize for each divisions longest throw and during the race around the halfway point the course splits into two 'chutes' to vote for which team you think is going to win the Superbowl later that evening, keep right or left to just run over the timing mat for which team you think will win.
Running in your favorite team's jersey is highly encouraged, even if it's not an Eagles or Chiefs jersey!
i recently ran a 30 km. the first 15k was smooth the next 5k i had to walk a bit, the next 5k i had to walk even more and the last 5k i had to walk the whole way. I cannot run more than 20 mins at a time i have to stop for 2-3 mins. How can i combat this??
for those running in the am, what do you guys think about the light snow that just passed by? are you guys still running or calling it a rest day?
(snow around my neighborhood is still very present although it’s a light layer, somewhat worried about black ice 🥶)
…and why is it almost always a Nissan?
This post brought to you by almost getting tagged twice by Nissans rolling through stop signs in Brooklyn today.
Idk how but something stuck to my shirt and pulled a thread on the shirt and now it’s ruined. Wasn’t even able to wear it once. Wondering if there’s a way to get it exchanged or get a replacement?
One of my favorite training runs. 10ish miles running every bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn, plus the Pulaski and Queensborough. I call it the Manhattan - Brooklyn - Manhattan - Brooklyn - Queens - Manhattan run.
If anyone is buying/selling tickets to the Millrose Games, in an effort to reduce the number of individual threads, we'll use this as a general thread.
Like other buy/sell threads in other subs -
WTB - Want to Buy
WTS - Want to Sell
e.g. WTS - 2 tickets section G @ $75 OBO
Please update the thread if you've successfully bought/sold.
I know most of us have become pretty well acquainted with Central Park's curves at this point but looking ahead to next week, I see that the route is just a bit different than what we've been doing (due to the shorter distance). Any thoughts on course strategy going into next week?
What do people project a Central Park 10k would be worth on a flat course (in terms of time conversion, % conversion, etc). Curious if there are any perspectives here; tried searching and there’s surprisingly not much previous discussion on the topic (that I can find)
My wife wants to cheer me (and other runners) on at some NYRR events but she’s pretty quiet so I think a cowbell or something similar would be easier. Not sure where to buy and would prefer a smaller business (and ideally if it’s in support of a running club or store). Any suggestions?
Hi everyone. I am hoping to get some perspectives on an idea I've been entertaining lately. I am also hoping that my question isn't out of place for this sub.
I'm a life long runner and own a small runner shop in New York. I've been wearing t-shirts of my business while running around town. I was thinking of finding other runners and pay them to wear t-shirts of my business while running as a way of promoting the business. I'm thinking of investing in the t-shirts design to make them stylish and appealing.
Do you guys think people would want to do that as part of their running experience? It's no issue for me of course since it's my business, but I'm not sure how other runners would view that.
Hello everyone. I’ve been on the website but I still haven’t been able to figure out when registration is for 2025. Or has it passed? I know it’s very hard to get into. I’ve done Boston. I have many qualifying times. …..but when does that window open?!
I took it off after the finish line and dropped it somewhere between getting water and hot chocolate. I asked lost and found and no one had turned it yet. I thought I’d ask here. Hope you all had a wonderful race!
Anyone know?
Stay warm!
But God damn is this medal their best yet!! Congrats to everyone who came out and Brrrrr’d it all the way to the finish and the volunteers!! That slushed Gatorade was everything!!!
