Collecting

I’m thinking about starting a rock collection. My question is where do you get your rocks? Do you just find them or buy from a website? Combination of both I’d assume. What websites would you use?

Some calcite clusters I mined.

I collected these calcite clusters off a limestone mountain. The black discoloration is from algae that has grown in the crystals. They clean up nicely after a good acid bath.

Any good rockhounding spots in North Central WA?

Hey all, I'm an aspiring rockhound thats looking for some good spots in North Central Washington state for when it starts to warm up out here. I currently live in Okanogan County and would prefer suggestions within the county to start with but I'm also open to suggestions for surrounding counties as well.

Anyone do any hounding in the palisades NJ?

I'm a Jersey native and mostly do non invasive hounding on beaches and tributaries from Cliffwood beach down to Cape May within the state, but getting bored. I'd like to try out the palisades but would like to know a little bit about accessibility before making a trip up there. I've struck out so many times going to locations that have been topped with strip malls and condos. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Other site recommendations would be great too. Happy Hounding!

Cleaning up a little teardrop shaped Petoskey

From 180 to 2000 grit sandpaper. It's not particularly symmetrical, but not too bad for my first time shaping up a fossil. The before picture sucks because I had to crop it from a larger photograph where this fossil was not the intended subject matter.

New shelf for my collection

My wife found someone in our town selling this old drawer. It's perfect for quarter sized rocks.

Anyone know any good rock hounding spots in Indiana?

I've just been picking up cool rocks along walks and periodic visits to parks, but I want to actually go out and have a half decent chance at finding something new and cool

Rock picking georgia

I used to go rock and gem picking in new england when I lived there, but I've moved to Georgia recently. I'm looking for recommendations to anywhere in Georgia or east alabama where people have had successfully found good picks. Everything I find online seems to be just pre-picked and I would just sift through it.

Hazardous malachite

Hey guys so I bought a malachite-azurite in Agadir, but I'm starting to be worried as I just read that it can be dangerous if not correctly treated or managed and so I need your help in how I can dispose it or if there's any other way for it to be less harmful. *it's in raw form.

Royston/Otteson mine tour; any tips before I go? I have Turquoise Fever

Curious how much and what type you can take. Is it a whatever you find deal? Will you be digging into the veins themselves or sifting through tailings?
