I stumbled across Drawn Swords: An Unauthorized Exploration of Red Sonja quite by accident but I'll be damned if I can find a copy of the book available anywhere.
Does anyone actually have this book and has read it?
Some interesting stuff in here … Lieberman mentions that another crossover is on the way and also that Amy Chu is doing something featuring a young Sonja - with the latter, he looks like he shouldn’t have said anything and stops just short of saying ‘D’OH’
Actually a good interview once you get past the interviewer’s laughing fits. It’s always interesting hearing about Luke’s relationship with Stan Lee too - I bet Luke firmly comes down on Stan’s side when it comes to who gets credit for creating Spider-Man etc.
Normally I’d wait to release my respect threads so you can see what I thought of each series overall, but I’m making an exception here.
I thought the Simone and Bennet runs had their bad points, but this series let me down HARD. I was expecting this to be something like Prophecy or Swords of Sorrow, and I was really looking forward to it.
The first three issues were promising aside from Sonja not sounding like herself and some anachronistic speech, which only got more noticeable as the series went on. Issue 4 was decent, but ultimately pointless since 2 already explained how Sonja had gotten to 1969. Issue 5 was an entire comic of padding that had no bearing on the story, and the start of 6 made them both redundant since they get recapped at the start.
Sonja becoming a vampire again was a cool concept and having her embrace her new powers was fun… It’s a shame the next issue has her pull a complete 180 and she starts acting mopey just so we can have some forced drama between her and Vampirella. Issue 11 ending with a dull fight scene between them and Vampirella anticlimactically sacrificing herself didn’t help matters.
The final issue also kinda pissed me off. Instead of some grand epic finale, we’re given a montage of Sonja marrying some woman they just introduced only for her to die a few paragraphs later. Then all of it gets undone. For as much crap as I have the Simone and Bennet runs, at least they stuck to their stories! They didn’t undo all of it at the last second.
And up next in my reading list, it’s Red Sonja and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica by Amy Chu. I’ve never read an Archie comic before, so I’m going in blind for this one.
It’s not really out of character since a few comics describe her as foul-mouthed, but it feels bizarre seeing Sonja call someone an asshole.
Basically looking to get started into the comics and am wondering where the best place to start is
thanks in advanced
