The Raising Rabbits Reddit
Rabbits - small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, found in several parts of the world. There are eight different genera in the family classified as rabbits, including the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), cottontail rabbits (genus Sylvilagus; 13 species), and the Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi, an endangered species on Amami Ōshima, Japan). There are many other species of rabbit, and these, along with pikas and hares, make up the order Lagomorpha. The male is called a buck and the female is a doe; a young rabbit is a kitten or kit. Wikipedia: rabbits
Cuniculture - the agricultural practice of breeding and raising domestic rabbits, usually for their meat, fur, or wool. This differs from the simpler practice of keeping a single or small group of rabbits as companions, without selective breeding, reproduction, or the care of young animals. Some people, called rabbit fanciers, practice cuniculture predominantly for exhibition. The distribution of rabbit farming varies around the globe, and while it is on the decline in some nations, in others it is expanding.

I recently found out my female rabbit is a male. He’s a Flemish giant, and one of his testicles is visible when he lays down a certain way, I can see it from behind. Not sure if it’s the warmer weather or a sign of something worse, what do y’all think?
I recently got a steel aguti buck and my freind told me that it can cause genetic issues to breed him but I've searched the internet and cannot find anything about it. Please give me advice

I would really love to get into this game- I love the almost cartoony graphics that also look realistic and I'm very intrigued about the gameplay and breeding mechanics...but I was very surprised when I learned that I needed some sort of invite code...I tried looking at other posts here to see who I could contact, but the only one that mentioned contacting them said that the devs never answered...does anyone have a working invite code that they could let me have..? I would greatly appreciate it~<3 and I'm really sorry for asking...TvT
Rn I’m planning on creating a colony of rabbits-buck and 6-7 does. They’re gonna have a small barn for night and run with grass. I also won’t them to procreate. My question is- if one of doe’s gives birth, can something happen to young rabbits if she’ll give birth in barn with other adult rabbits or do I have to separate her before she gives birth because that’s what I was doing when my rabbits were all separated and they met each other for a short time to procreate and then be separated again so rabbit mother was all by herself but now I want them to live all together and procreate with access to nature. So can rabbit give birth in rabbit barn and do I have to be worried that others might hurt the little ones?
Looking to get back into breeding rabbits and need some homemade cage ideas for outside
Maybe it’s just me but I love having name themes for my litters. I have run out of ideas and thought it would be fun to share some ideas in the comments. Photo for cuteness
Hi all. We have a Netherlands Dwarf rabbit. She will turn 6 in a few months. Unfortunately, because of our situation, we won't be in a position to let her breed until she's 8 years old. Is that too late? (two more years)
I know life expectancy is on the higher end with this breed, and she's pretty healthy right now thank G-d. I was wondering what the oldest age is that people here had babies from their Netherlands Dwarf rabbit?
Thanks!
So I rescued this cotton tail from some dogs. It’s by my guess 8-10 weeks old and is eating solid food. It’s gotten more comfortable around me but I’m having trouble getting him (sexed as male I think) any advice?
I have a first-time mon who isn't doing excellent. She started with 8, lost 2 in the first few days we weren't concerned. They're about 16 days old now though, and she has lost 2 yesterday morning and 2 this morning, with a third barely hanging on. I think at this point she's stepping on them, they look flattened and she spends way too much time in the box. Anyways, we have 1 healthy baby left. I have another rabbit with 7 kits about a month old, I was thinking about moving the one left in with the others while the mom still has milk. I don't want this last one stomped out... What do yall think?? Would love any advice
*Had been hoping to breed them both together, as didn't know the first one was pregnant!
Hello! I'm wondering if anyone here is playing Lucky Lapine? I have been trying to reach the dev team through their fb page for an invite code but it seems that no one answers me. Can anyone help me with that?
So I got out of raising rabbits a few years back due to the cost, it wasn't anywhere near as economical as chicken. I want to start raising them again, but i want to do it smarter this time. I was thinking about seeding roughly a quarter acre of the property with hay grasses (Timothy, ochardgrass and alfalfa) and moving the growout tractor more times per day to raise them entirely on pasture once they are weaned from momma. I don't see a reason this wont work, but i could be dead wrong. what do you guys think?
I’m in contact with a breeder currently. How do I suss out the sketchy ones? I texted them and their litter happened to be 8 weeks old, the age most breeders seem to let them go to another home. Seems awfully coincidental dunnit? Overall seems very nice though.
They want to charge 185. online said less than like 100 and another breeder had for 150. Reasonable price?
How to I generally tell the health and quality of the rabbit considering I don’t know anything about them?
Are there alternatives to breeders that are better for any reason?? I definitely want one that I can reasonably assume will have a playful personality like a HL, and obviously a rescue doesn’t have a known lineage.
So on may 1st I breed my 2 large Rex's and had 3 successful falloffs she is acting pregnant, I just saw her nipples for the first time since owning her (2 years) seem swollen, but this is the morning of day 35 and she is still acting pregnant but no babies yet . Should I wait or put my 2 together again for some romance?
Hello, I was looking for some help in regards to raising rabbits. (I also posted this in /r homestead, hope there's not problem, just really want opinions.)
My female rabbit gave birth to 9 baby rabbits. Everything was going alright, they were 4 weeks plus of age (dont know exactly, but still "toddlers"), already eating animal feed. Suddently in the last two days, 3 died unexpectadly.
I have been told that it is "normal" because they were too many and the female mom could not feed them all properly. And, as such, some vitamins and suplements before could have prevented it.
I am not sure of this theory i have read common causes are anorexia, cold, gastric stasis. I have also fed them orange tree dry leaves, which i am told is okay, and they had ate it days prior and were okay.
Am I doing something wrong? Is it really common for so many to die? Any thoughs for help?
Hi all!! I'm new to raising/breeding rabbits and have considered the possibility of raising show rabbits. What are the best or most rare breeds to come by that would do well in show?? Any tips or websites/books to read from are appreciated also!

Hi I have a fuzzy Holland lop, she has a lot of matting that I've been working out since I've gotten her. A couple days ago I turned her over and I noticed that there was some red flakes on her genital area. She does still have quite a bit of matting around that area. she doesn't seem to be in pain, she's eating normal, she's drinking normal, and she's if anything gotten more energetic since I've had her. I keep her pen very clean I clean it daily.
I've not had a long-haired breed before, and have not had rabbits in a very long time. Is the red flakes something I should be concerned about? Is it due to the matting around her butt? Should I be shaving her underside?
I tried taking some pictures but they're not very good sorry it's best I can do.
