Majestic creature of the far north, the polar bear is the world's largest terrestrial carnivore, its Latin name, Ursus maritimus, means 'sea bear', an apt name for this amazing species which spends much of its life predominantly on sea ice. Polar bears have been known to swim more than 60 miles or 100km without rest in search for food!

Polar bears are listed as a vulnerable by IUCN because of ongoing and potential loss of their sea ice habitat resulting from climate change.

End the willow project

The willow project will dump 287 tons of waste into the arctic, this will disrupt the lives of the animals and people in the area. Stopping this could actually save the planet as we know it. Please sign or donate to the cause. Spread the word

Today's International Polar Bear Day! It's created to coincide with the time period when polar bear mums and cubs are sleeping in their dens, and to raise awareness about the conservation status of the polar bear. This is my favourite polar bear family photo!

What are those spots on her fur?

I watched a video about Agee the polar bear last night. Somehow nobody in the comments had asked about her fur, so I couldn't find any answers there. Google also didn't help. It suggested alopecia, could that be it?

Floating docks for polar bears

Has anyone thought about creating a series of floating docks to help the Polar bears get out further to hunt since the ice is gone?

Polar bear mothers, in particular, are very caring of the young ones. Today, due to climate change, bears have to travel greater distances to forage for food and survive. Sometimes the mother must hold her young one by her side while searching for the next hunting area.

It's Polar Bear Week! Polar Bears International is developing an effective early detection radar systems for bears entering Arctic communities as they are spending more time on land due to shorter sea ice seasons. This system will help keeping polar bears and people safe, they need our support!
