1) Genetic unusualness

Real birds with distinctly unusual visuals, sounds, behaviors, or facts.

  • We have high standards for unusualness, but a higher standard for parrots, owls, and flamingos
  • Should make you: feel "shock", or question why the bird exists
  • Birds ubiquitous in general media are no longer unusual

A list of non-unusual birds.

2) Correct species/breed name in title

Requires the common or scientific name, but reasonable mistakes won't be removed. This is helpful for education, searching, and research.

If you don't know, ask the moderators or try /r/whatsthisbird.

3) Minimum picture size = 400 by 400 pixels

4) "Good format"

  • No "photoshop" (minimal oversaturation, no deception)
  • No reaction text/emojis (no memes, no commentary)
  • No bad cropping (minimal black bars, no obvious screenshots)

Artwork is only allowed when extinct, nearly extinct, or beside a photograph.

5) Gifs/Videos allowed

Must have motion footage of the bird.

6) Captive birds marked as Captivity

Some people here prefer seeing animals in the wild. Example of captivity: pets, zoos, livestock, rehabilitation, etc.

Just no obvious neglect or abuse.

7) No compilations

No posts focusing on 3+ bird species.

8) No recent reposts

Try using the search box before submitting.

  • No reposting: within 3 months
  • No species/breed reposting: within a month (28 days)

Lidth's jay (Garrulus lidthi) is only found on a few of the Ryukyu Islands in southwestern Japan. Its existence has been threatened by the introduction of mongooses and an increased crow presence on these islands. As of a 2016 survey, fewer than 3,900 mature jays are estimated to remain.

This striking pale plumage of this common raven is due to genetic mutations, leucism, or albinism. It is estimated that 1 out of 30,000 raven is born with these conditions. Photo by Cos Van Wermeskerken.
