What's the current state of Pathfinder Online?

What's the current state of Pathfinder Online? Hard to tell from the website, from what I can piece together it looks like they had a big layoff around 4 years ago but it's still alive and in some sort of beta?

Are people playing it?

Giving away 2 month free trial code

I bought a humble bundle tier 1 for pathfinder books and with them I also got Pathfinder Online 2-month free trial, which I don't need. So if anybody wants the code, let me know.

What is this game really like? What are your thoughts both as a game and a resource?

So I have both played and run Pathfinder games. With a recent Humble Bundle, I got a metric ton of the books but also a 2-month trial. Reading through the description of the game I'm a little concerned. Primarily the Open World PVP. I rarely deal with other people in video games if I can help it and with PVP I don't have an option not to. What does the game look like right now? What are the good points, and what are the bad? Is this in any way useful to to someone who already plays the PnP game? I would be ok if the PVP doesn't come up and they have some of the major cities mapped out so I could immerse myself in the environment (Doing the Rise of the Runelords now so seeing Sandpoint and Mangnimar and such could be nice).

Really any thoughts and insight you could provide would be very helpful in me deciding if I will give it a try.

Alchemist with a Wand of Fireball??

So hypothetical, how overpowered is an Alchemist with a Wand of Fireball? One of my PCs found one with 49 charges and I dont know if I should try and nerf it somehow incase it becomes over powered. I know that it does 1d6 of fire damage per caster level, but I dont know if alchemists have any caster levels.

Make a CoOp game, not an MMO

Mmo’s ruin lore for games and coop games are scarce these days. We don’t need to play Pathfinder with millions, just a group of friends (just like the tabletop). What do you guys think?

Does anyone actually play this?

Hey folks, I had the immense hilarious pleasure of trying this game out long ago thanks to a humble bundle and I gotta know: Is anyone seriously playing this? I'm honestly shocked this game is still seeing development.

Is it worth the time it takes to install?

The Pathfinder 10th Anniversary Humble Bundle comes with a free trial for this game, and I feel like a lot of people are sitting on them because it's... really hard... to find information that isn't several years old, and most of what's there is bad. I had heard Paizo pulled the plug because Goblinworks couldn't get the game to work as intended, but it seems that's not true.

But I don't really have the time or the energy to sit at my computer for hours, setting up the game and patching it and all that fun stuff if actually playing it is like walking into a meat freezer that's been broken for three days in the middle of the tropical summer.

So I ask... is it playable enough that I won't regret at least trying it?

Summary of PFO Seminar at GenCon 2018

This was streamed on the official Paizo twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/officialpaizo. Small room, about a dozen folks there, just Lisa Stevens talking (and a couple helpers running tech, monitoring chat, etc.).

Lisa spent about 10 minutes going over the last few updates of patch notes.

  • Future milestones:

Enchanting. Most of the design is done, working on the code. Hoping for October.

Factions. Join a faction, increases your standing, etc. Golarion factions, gods, etc.

New Player Experience. Lisa says the game is "sexy" and "fun to play" but hard to get into. There's a new VP of marketing who worked for TSR and WotC, and MMOs like DDO, WizardsOnline (?), something else (I didn't hear this clearly).

Azoth Store. A type of currency sold for real money, can be traded in-game, and used to pay for a subscription. Cash Shop will be expanded in the future.

New Art. A house will be added to the game. There are currently no staff artists. New art needs to already be made, but not implemented. They can acquire it from hiring people, Unity store, etc. They have a tech artist willing to convert some existing monster art, once the contract gets finalized (30-40 new monsters). They might be able to pay some artists to finish Gnomes.

New Pricing Options. Currently $15/mo. They want more options, but don't know what they are yet. Crowdforging. There needs to be a free trial of some sort, but balanced better than before (people abusing free accounts).

New Classes. There are currently four: Cleric/Rogue/Wizard/Fighter. Focus on easy ones first like Paladin, Sorcerer. Rangers and Monks take more effort and will come later.

Unity Upgrade. Currently on Unity from 4 years ago. Not being updated means limited options to buy things from the Unity store (Dev assets, not player-purchased stuff). They decided two weeks ago they need to upgrade Unity, big task - Add staff or contract out.

Pathfinder 2.0. Opportunity to tweak the rules in-game. Player disconnect when PFO doesn't really work as Pathfinder RPG. It will not be a faithful implementation of the RPG rules, just similar terminology.

Timeline. Social stuff will come after GenCon. Enchanting in October. The rest is an open schedule. Here's a picture of Thornkeep.

  • Questions (Heavily, heavily paraphrased):

Q: Do you play?
Lisa: Yes I played this morning.

Q: Something about Settlements
Lisa: Haven't seen Duffy... Settlements: Most active are Bandits. Talk of alliances. People are focused on leveling up buildings. Keeping busy.

Lisa: We've been doing a lot of stuff with a Discord channel for voice chat. Bandits and Commonwealth are in there helping new players.

Q: Something about changes to the way it was
Lisa: Changes to feats that didn't match up well. Line of Sight changed things, and AI is more deadly.

Q: Something about Kingmaker?
Lisa: Coming out in the end of September. Sept 25th. Testing is done, gold master. Ready for Steam.

Q: More Kingmaker
Lisa: Owlcat-games, they made a lot of MMOs. Getting back to CRPGs.

Q: Something about finishing PFO?
Lisa: If we had more people, more money, and people who knew what they were doing, they could finish it like that snaps fingers. It's my pet project, I play every day, I love the game.

Q: What advice for a player from launch that's interested in coming back?
Lisa: Hook up with an active Settlement in your timezone. Read the release blogs to see what's put in and changed. Forums to get rapid answers to specific questions.

Q: Digital version of Starfinder
Lisa: Interest from various companies reaching out to use about Starfinder, but nothing concrete. Interest from any type of game you can imagine. I think you'll see an explosion of games over the next 5-7 years. Takes a lot of time and effort to nail down contracts.

Q: At release, will players starting out be at disadvantage compared to original backers?
Lisa: People playing will be higher skilled and know the game. There are tiers: Tier 1 is beginning tier and you stay there for maybe a month. Tier 2 is where a lot of players will end up. Tier 3 is better than that, but a group of T2s can kill a T3 player if they're competent. Can get to Tier 3 in less than a year, after that's it's how well you play the game. Not a huge advantage, and the world has a lot of space. Grouping helps a lot.

Q: Something about monetization?
Lisa: That decision was made before I got involved. Originally licensed to Goblinworks. The people who started the company came out of Eve online ("Eve with swords"). They never got the funding they needed. Free-to-play... Nothing is really free. We're looking at free trial stuff, but don't think we'll ever go F2P (Never say never). We need more people playing, so we need to reduce the barrier to entry for people coming from F2P games.

Q: Marketing, kingmaker?
Lisa: I have levers to move people in game. If you're going to throw new players in game, need to fix the pricing models, free trial option. How quickly we can do that will determine. Kingmaker people might help advertise PFO if I ask. Humble Bundle.

If anyone else watched or has anything to add (or correction) please feel free.

Druid/Barbarian Aasimar

Hey so I wanted to flesh out my character background for a one on one campaign. Its a humble begining story and our powers/abilities wont develop till later.

A long time ago deep in the families bloodline an ancestor made a deal with a demon. During hard and desperate times they contracted that they wanted a blessed baby from celestial blood. Hoping that talented new blood would foster great wealth and reputation. However the young couple did not specify they wanted a blessed baby in that generation. In return the demon requested their souls. After the ritual new hope arose in the young couple and they started trying to make a family. They tried and tried eventually after birthing over 10 babies none of which had any special attributes. Delving deeper into a depression they sought after the demon again but to no prevail. They stopped trying to have more babies realising that this generation will never have a blessed baby. They grew old with the hope that somewhere down the line there will be a future grandchild with a better future than they had.

Three generations later: Eran Greid and Melra Valtyra gave birth to a baby girl blessed with something special unknown to them. She is a beautiful child with rich brown hair, eyes that shines like a diamond and skin that glowed like a pearl from the sea.  They named: Oremi Greid.

The parents settled after having her on an island. The mass collection of islands are called The Principalities, our island is a small one more to the north east named after its largest town Istrahl. Which is in 1 of the 11 Princes territories. (a ship Captain with the strongest fleet in a particular region) Called The Dragon Captain. Unfortunately that is when their past caught up with them. They were human thieves. Their goal was to start a community of thieves to find a rebellion against the Dragon Captain. One night their home was raided by the dragon captains men. Oremi barley knew her parents the last memory she had of them was of that night and it haunts her still. She was 5 when the invasion happened.

She remembers that her father would tell amazing stories about the trinkets around the house. He would get really theatrical, re enacting scenes of past triumphs. During the time of one of the stories Oremi was going through her mothers jewelery playing dress up. She had at one point 3 necklaces a big bracelet and a ring on with her mother while her father was regaling the tale of each item was when the invasion happened.

Out of no where and with out warning city guards came breaking through the house tearing it up. Luckily they were up stairs when the invasion happened and had time to hide some possessions under the floor board and Oremi of course. She was forced to hide under her parents bed wrapped up in a blanket. The last words she hears her father say was: " Don't open your eyes! " scarred to death and with out knowing what will happen she tried her best to stay hidden and cower under her blanket. Hearing her parents rummaging around she heard a window open and her mother jump out of it: " Quick Eran!" She said. And that was the last she saw of her mother. Her father was still rummaging and then the guards busted in the room shouting and she could hear fighting for a few minutes until she heard something heavy fall to the floor. Under her blanket she dare not remove herself from under the bed, she could smell pennies and hear gurgling and whimpering coming from somewhere close and then it was quiet. She knew her father died.

After some time she was still under the bed, People came and went, search the house and no one saw her. ( GM discretion but the ring was of invisibility ) She stopped listening to the guards conversations in pure fear of her parents and what happened to them.

Night fell, she could see no sun coming through peaks under the bed through the blanket. Its been quiet for a long time in the house. Wondering wether or not someone will come for her she could hear soft footprints coming from downstairs. "Hello?" A faint deep male voice said. Quiet steps from downstairs got louder and then someone was opening the door to the bedroom. "By the gods!" He exclaimed softly. He was moving around for a bit, found the hidden items, and then knelt by the bed. "Oh Oremi!" He was the only one who saw her. ( GM discretion but he would have the ability to see invisibility )

She is haunted by that memory constantly even at a young adult life. She never could thank the man that saved her. All She remembers is sleeping in strong arms that carried her out of under the bed, taking off her jewellery that she was still wearing so that she would be comfortable. ( or steal ) She forgot she still had it on. She remembers That man brought her to deep into the villages forrest, their home was near the edge of the island. ( GM discretion. This man new that Oremi was blessed with Aasamarian blood. Your choice how he knows ) He brought her to a druid family. They vowed to protect the gifted child and love her like their own. Growing up in the community of the druids her memories grew faint through time. Around her 18th year she has been having frequent night terrors of that night.

Omeri grew fond of her new family. Bonds formed, new memories blossomed. She was fascinated by the abilities they had. Nothing like her criminal parents ( never finding out the fate of her mother). The manipulations of nature was the most intriguing to Oremi. Early on she was taught of the druid arts. Not being able to perform quickly she began dabbling into alchemy, manipulating materials through her own creations. She slowly over time developed the magical abilities. Growing up she was out casted by most of the elderly tribes because she was an outsider although she quickly gained acceptance with the children, the elders were still stubborn to accept her. Slowly she was becoming more accepted by them because she is able to understand the language so quickly. ( GM note: Racial Trait: Truespeaker) She became tough and realized she had a deep anger with in her. During her spare time she would be with the wild beasts trying to tame them and befriend them. Not having many friends with in the community let her seek company with in the wild.

She has been thinking about her parents more often, wondering who the man was that brought her here. Wanting to find out where her birth mother is. For the most part her time with the druids has been good they adopted family is kind to her and raise her well. Letting her explore the culture, ask questions and seek knowledge where she can.

Who Only Kickstarted This for the Books?

I know I did. I never really liked the art direction for the game, and when the alpha came out, the way it was unoptimized and took all day to download the files to just pay it, it just didn't seem worth it.

I'm happy that I got the Emerald Spire SuperDungeon, though. That was a really fun adventure. Glad to kickstart that one.

Amazon took your idea and ran with it

I was just reading about the amazon MMOrpg release - https://games.amazon.com/games - "New World". Its going to be a pvp sandbox MMO fantasy game. It's basically pathfinder online, or what it has tried to be. If you are looking for an alternative that isn't being run by 4 or less people....you may not have long to wait.

Starting on the Wrong Foot?

I've just discovered this game and was reading up on it.

The Pathfinder ruleset was designed almost exclusively for group-based co-op gameplay.

Does anyone else think it's a bad idea to use that ruleset and IP to create an open world PVP MMO?

It seems like people who would be attracted to the game by the "Pathfinder" name and logo would not like be inclined to enjoy that type of gameplay.

It also seems like people who are looking for an open world PVP online experience would not associate "Pathfinder" with that genre.

I realize there could be a thousand good reasons why this project is struggling, but built-in "anti-marketing" seems like it is and will continue to be a contributing factor.
