I was exposed to hispanic culture growing up (mainly through music and friends) here. I also enjoy Persian music too, and love my culture. I appreciate being unique which can cause some challenges but I’d love to hear peoples tastes and opinions. I’m curious are there any of you guys listen to Spanish music a lot. I’m wondering as an Iranian-American who grew up here in the states Im curious are there any of you guys listen to Spanish music?? Like Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, J Balvin, Maluma, Peso Pluma, Daddy Yankee, Myke Towers, Feid, JHAYCO, Ariel, Nicky Jam, Chencho, Yandel, Wisin, Shakira, Karol G, etc.
What would mamajoon always have in her kitchen on hand?
Hi there :)
I was under the impression that shabeh Yalda, the iranian celebration of the longest night, was going to be on the 22th of December. That's why I made plans to visit family for the week from that night onwards. However, I just looked it up and apparently it is on the 20th this year. I don't know anyone from Iranian origin in Madrid that I could do something with for Yalda, hence me coming to reddit.
I'm not thinking of doing anything big or specific.I just like the idea of doing something with my persian background, as I haven't done so in a while.
I'm twenty btw, so if there is someone in about my age range that would be up for doing something together, send me a message!
Happy holidays everyone!
Can someone please help translate this, I’m not sure if it is Urdu and if it is a name or word. Any help is appreciated
What year exactly?
I grew up pronouncing the word as “June” but I’m not sure if what I’m pronouncing is the word “Joon” or “Jan”. Is there a difference between the words? Is the pronunciation different?
Are there any common Persian wedding vows I could learn? I know it would make his mother so happy
Hi everyone, my name is Rostam, and I'm a member of the Iranic Genomes Project. We are a group of biological science students and a post-Doc working to shed light on Iran’s genetic landscape through the lens of population genetics (hereafter "popgen"). Iran is a rich and diverse country that is home to 1 out of every 100 people on the planet, yet its representation per capita in popgen studies is abysmally low. Not only is the representation low, but much of the sampling done to date has been poor in quality, failing to consider the nuances of such an ethnically and linguistically diverse country. This has caused rampant misinformation about the genetic history of Iranians to spread in certain online spaces. Various factors have also hindered advancing this field within Iran itself, and this is where you can help.
There are millions of Iranians living abroad, representing every corner of Iran’s diversity. We are looking for members of the Iranian diaspora (and related groups such as Kurds, Afghans, Tajiks, Turkmen) to participate in our project and help represent this under-sampled population. Participation involves filling out our demographic form to determine if you qualify for the groups we are studying, and possibly being contacted for a follow-up. If you qualify, and have already taken a commercial DNA test, we will request your raw data for evaluation. If you have not yet taken a DNA test but fit our target criteria, you may be contacted in the future and sponsored for a DNA test to contribute to our study. Once your data is processed, you will receive a detailed breakdown of your genetic history using the latest tools and ancient DNA samples from available historical populations—all free of charge. Your participation will greatly contribute to advancing knowledge of this region and to science as a whole!
Here's a link to our Participant Demographics Form. Also, feel free to share this post and link with any friends or family you think may be interested in participating.

I want to learn(only reading) persian and my primary goal is to read and make sense of the poetry of Bedil(Abdul Qadir bedil) and a couple of other poets, is there any approach tailored more towards achieving this particular goal?
(I have a working understanding of Urdu, don't know if that means anything here or not.)

If you can help me in any way or have any suggestion or could give me references to resources or any input at all, it would be tremendous helpful. Thanks
Hi ! So it’s my Persian bestfriends birthday today and I thought it’d be nice to write her a short poem/ letter in Farsi. She can read Farsi and I can write it too im just having trouble coming up with what I should write. I don’t know any Farsi but I know there are beautiful poems and I’d like to write one on the card I’m making for her. Could someone help me out! Thank you!
While I'm not Iranian, I'm currently learning the Persian language. I recently watched "White Night" on YouTube and highly recommend this Iranian cinematic masterpiece to everyone I was shocked by knowing that Iran can make this type of movie!
This lady at my job was mad at me and on her way out said “you have a sphinx face that’s why you’ll never be happy”. I’m confused about the meaning of this. She was Persian which is why I’m asking here.
Hello people,
I'd love it if someone could help me with the lyrics/translation of this song or just tell me what it is about. I can't find lyrics anywhere. It's 'Tehrangeles' by Asa Soltan.

Looking for something my mother used to sing to me when I was younger, could be also merely a regional thing. It just went something like "ghorboonet shekle mahet, mahet mahet mahet" lol
Hi people,
I want your opinions on the names I have decided with my wife for our future children.
boy: Dariush Girl: Yalda
I am from northern-Afghanistan and my wife is from Syria. We would both like to choose names that sound nice and are easy to pronounce for people in the UK. And after I suggested those names to my wife she like them and wouldn’t mind naming our baby dariush and Yalda.
My concern is that these names are very Iranian? Which I don’t mind at all. But I don’t want my kids in future to get confused about their identity if you know what I mean.
I have heard afghans named Dariush before but never Yalda. What do you guys think?
like shir or sabun
My parents are coming over to my in-laws home tomorrow, is it necessary for them to bring an item, like a bottle of wine or something? My in-laws always comment on what people bring to their home and find it necessary when people visit.
My family isn’t necessarily like that and show generosity in other ways. I’m nervous my in-laws will judge my parents if they don’t show up with something. They’re also of different cultures. In-laws are Persian and my parents are American.
Persian female here who grew up in New York, around American culture. Every time I go to weddings or parties with Persian music, it’s the same shallow 20 songs and they ALL sound the same with the same autotune/AI style voices. And the music makes me CRINGE. No amount of alcohol or happy vibes can make me enjoy it or dance to it. 😣
Sometimes, I zone out and watch people (including my friends) that are dancing and singing along to it, and I can’t help but wonder “how could anyone enjoy this crap”? “What are they thinking?”, and “are they as shallow as the music”?
To be fair, I can’t stand American Pop music either (not just Persian pop music).
Can anyone chime in and let me know if you also look around and can’t help but wonder how people enjoy this shallow Persian music? I can’t be the only one!
P.s. I love traditional/classic Persian music that has depth and no autotune. I just don’t enjoy new age Persian pop music.
Is it normal for persian/iranis to call each other “Jaan” in a professional environment i.e. work? Does jaan just mean my dear or more than that? Can you refer to your female senior colleagues as “jaan” on chat if they are persians or iranis while asking a work question?
Hi everyone,
I've been trying to purchase the book "Absorbing Persian" by David Pendlebury since it is exactly what I am looking for, but it seems the original publisher has ceased to operate and as a result the book is now out of print. I have contacted an organisation that is meant to continue the original publisher for guidance, but in case they reply in the negative, I was wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to buy a copy of this book?
Thanks in advance!
