A place for left-wing and moderate opposition to the rise of extreme, political and conservative Islam in the west and in the larger world.

Islam is a religion with 1.8 billion followers. A significant portion of these people believe things that are hard to reconcile with modern secular society. This a place chiefly aimed at rational discourse centred around the apparent rise of political, extremist and conservative Islam, without falling towards the conspiratorial, dogwhistle and often racist nihilism of the alt-right. Contributions from Muslims who oppose these wings of their own religion are welcome and actively encouraged.

Rules:

  1. Posts from accounts that are less than 20 days old or have karma less than 20 will be held in a queue until reviewed by a moderator.

  2. In general infractions of the rules below will be dealt with firstly by a warning; then a 7 day ban; and in the most persistent cases by a permanent ban. In severe cases some steps may be skipped at the discretion of the moderators. There is a possibility of appeal by messaging the moderators. Abusive comments may be removed or edited at the discretion of the moderators.

  3. Follow reddiquette. For example no trolling, doxing etc.

  4. No dog-whistling. In a world where racists criticise Islam using dog-whistles it's very important to seek clarity in your language.

  5. No abuse directed towards other commenters. Disagreement is fine, but again be civil and clarify wherever possible.

  6. Islam is a set of ideas; Muslims are a set of individuals. Criticism of Islam is fine; treating Muslims as an undifferentiated monolith is not. There are different interpretations of what Islam means and this may vary from person to person. Some may even have left the faith but still see themselves or be seen as Muslims. Failure to treat Muslims as individuals will invite the attention of the moderators - all the more so if the poster appears to be coming from a position of hatred or racism.

  7. No racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia or any other form of bigotry.

Is slowing or stopping Islam's rise in the west possible? And if so, is there a way to do this without being negatively discriminatory towards minority ethnic groups?

Personally I'm for lowered overall immigration rates in my country, as I believe that this (combined with the buffeting effects of modern global capitalism as well as the runaway changes that technology is bringing) is having a negative effect on socio-cultural cohesion in many areas.

As someone steadfastly opposed to misogyny, homophobia and conservative organised religion, and who is rather pessimistic about Islam's chances of a reformation in the short term, I'm of the belief that a growing conservative Islamic demographic in the west may start to provide a serious challenge to secular liberalism.

Is it possible to provide a bulwark against this without falling into the pitchfork-waving trap of the EDL, Pegida etc? I'd be interested to know everyone's thoughts.

Tell us your stories of Muslims being normal human beings

Of course humanity ranges from the heroic to the horrifying. However "normal" excludes the extremes. So I am just looking stories about Muslims that we can relate to as human beings. So here is mine.

Omar

Apparently I am not very popular at work. I have had one Muslim colleague, whom I'll call Omar. He said to me that I am the age of his father, and that in his culture one should respect one's elders. He went on that I should not be troubled by what anybody said behind my back.
