I am considering usingthis 12v pump for off grid shower and sink.
I am trying to figure how to connect the feed line to it and the the output line to it.
A hose will initially feed the water from the outdoor water tank into the shed. What kind of hose/pipe should I use to connect hose to pump?
I will be using Pet inside the shed... What kind of pipe or hose should I use to connect the pump to the pex which will then go to sink/shower? I need certain kind of fittings perhaps? Totally new to this.
Thank you.
I’m currently having a water pump with compressor at my cabin. The pump is directly at the lake and supplying water to three different outputs through the tubes. I’m happy with the system, but as I’m running it with the energy coming from my solar panels / battery pack I’m now thinking about putting in a IBC tank as the main supply to the pump. I’m thinking to put that tank a bit higher up (8-10meters) and fill it with petrol powered pump. The assumpition here is that for sure this should save a lot of energy from the solar-powered pump? Right? Anyone having some physics or real life experience to back that assumption? Or should I just build it and see what happens… thanks for any insights!
Hello! I am in Florida and trying to figure out what I need to be off grid and still have an A/C and Fridge running.
Right now I just have a small Ecoflow solar generator with backup battery and portable 400w solar pannel. We mainly use this to charge our phones and run the fans and lights. We are currently in a 12x32 ft shed with our animals and going to be renovating a 40ft school bus as our main oiving space with ability to travel.
I was thinking about doing something that can be moved from shed to bus, but since the shed is already wired with lights and plugs I was hoping to see people's suggestions for something that hooks right into the sheds breaker box and we can add a RV plug in to the outside. I like all the solar generators with battery options butni recognize there are likely more cost effective ways to set up a reliable system. Bus will also be getting equipped with solar also, and I'm going to invest in a good regular/dual fuel generator for when needed when sun is obscured. All suggestions welcome for solar, refrigerators(or solar/plug in coolers for something in the mean time).
What are your favorite products/parts of your setups? What are my options to be able to have something as simple as possible but also cost effective?
Thanks everyone!
Hi was wondering if this community would have ideas on what my brother-in-law can use in Russia. He sometimes travels for days in rural Russia (outside Yakutsk/Siberia-known for their extreme cold weather) without access to cell tower and we're worried if his vehicle ever breaks down.
I've seen some suggestions but wondering if there are any more tried and true things that might work on Russia's extreme climate.
should add, I live in the US and will be able to order anything and pass it to him by a relative who is visiting soon. Budget is ~$500 if possible. Monthly fees not ideal but I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!
Hey all I have been looking for a way to turn some food grade drums that were used for honey into water storage. The ways I have thought up I'm unsure of but figure I would ask the offgrid reddit for options. My original plan was to use water bladders that where roughly 55 gallons. Then use it for rain collection with some filters on it. I know how to make the charcoal filters just the storage has me stumped.
I currently have a 24v solar setup consisting of 2 x 415w panels, an MPPT controller, 24v battery and 3k inverter.
I'm looking to purchase an electric motor for either a bicycle generator or windmill, just something for those dark days. I reckon 200-400w output would be sufficient but I'm not sure what kind of motor I should be looking for.
Would a 24v 250w gocart motor work? Are the 1k+ motors more difficult to turn? Anyone have any experience with Vevor (EU)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Can’t get enough of watching the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee and my dogs roaming around!
So….my husband and I are exploring off grid energy. We are overwhelmed with the options. Here is our situation….we have about 50 acres. We have a 7000 sq foot home. I do garden and can. We have looked at generators however we are on propane so not the best option. We have looked at wind turbines but in Louisiana I don’t think this is the best option due to lack of consistent wind during the summer. That leaves us with solar. We have already received a few quotes but still soooooo much to think about before making a decision. Any other options? What brand solar is the best? I don’t even know how much I would actually need from a panel and battery perspective. All kind responses would be appreciated!!!
Stacking a full IBC/tote on an empty one query!
It’s me(43F) my husband (44M) and my son (9). I would really love to join an off grid community. I have been working on my credit for years and it is finally in the mid 600s but the bank says I don’t have enough! Ugh!! I am already growing a personal gamrden but want more, like animals, like minded people and just the atmosphere. Is there any communities close to Pensacola that we could join? We already live in a camper so we would have our own place to live or can rent from the community. I have a full time job that I can transfer to keep income and my husband is employed but idk if he can transfer but is a very hard worker. Any ideas would be great.
Howdy folks,
I have been thinking for a few years now that I would like to buy a piece of land, mostly to hold onto for the rest of my life. I don't really want a house right now, as I am pretty happy living a minimalist lifestyle in my van, but I would like a place to call my own one day.
Right now, I can find some pretty affordable 40+ acre chunks of wilderness in northern Minnesota for like <$100,000. I have this feeling that in 30 years that might not be possible, and it would be good to get in while I can.
Given the state of worldly affairs, I have a feeling the Midwest is going to be a bit better off from the climate crisis we are sure to experience within our lifetime. Would it be a bad idea to start setting aside money with plans to put a down payment on a piece of land, even if I'm not going to actively be living there? I want to live elsewhere in the USA too, a piece of land in Arizona would be nice, but the heat and access to water may become a problem long term.
I'm looking specifically for land where I can park an RV and camp for extended periods of time but it's not clear at all to me how to know if I can park an RV without significant research and that would need to be done for every property I look at. Any suggestions?
Currently incredibly overwhelmed with modern life - partly due to autism, but I also just hate what society has become, and I don’t want to be part of it anymore.
Modern society has left me feeling like a shell of a human. I don’t feel like an animal, I feel like a robot. Im spiritually exhausted.
Stripping back to the basics of life, going back to nature and grounding myself back to a life of pure autonomy sounds like bliss.
Hello,
Moving to our off grid home in a month. Need advice on a 16-19cu ft fridge that is super efficient? Prefer 120v options as wiring is already in place and will have 3000w inverter with 800AH/48v batteries.
Thanks
Looking for advice on decent solar oven that can be DIYed without much trouble.
Also, other subs that would be good to query about them.
Hi all, i wasn’t sure where to post this so i thought maybe the people here would know. I have some ev batteries that i am trying to get rid of. In total i have 24 BMW i3 batteries. I believe they are the 60ah ones. I have reached out to a few ev battery recyclers but they have told me that they are located far so the cost of shipping would offset any profit. Does anyone know where i could sell these in the south texas area?
Im an 18 year old high school graduate down in California. I plan to move to The Last Frontier(Alaska) sometime in the future to live off the grid. I desire a life full of Independence, Serenity, and Simplicity. I know I have a long way to go. I know I won’t be able to set off on my Great Alaskan Adventure overnight. Im aware I got a lot of work to do. If anyone could give me any tips about Off Grid Living in Alaska or Off Grid Living in general please share. Any tips or advice no matter how small would definitely help. Thank you.
I’ve got a shurflo pump. In Alaska so the whole water system is squeezed in my bathroom; storage tank, shurflo, pressure tank, hot water heater. Pump is so damn loud. Bought some sound reducing rubber pads to mount it on, four inches thick, and it didn’t improve all that much. I want to perhaps build a foam board insulation box around it, but I worry about over heating.
Had several of these pumps on my boat and they never made this much noise. But I guess the ocean deadened it a bit.
Have you had success in quieting these pumps? If so, how?
Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone knows any great educational books to take with me on a long off-grid living vacation. Books about different types of fishes, wild animals, trees, mushrooms, plants, handiwork etc. Anything that contains useful information that would be necessary for someone living off-grid. I know there are thousands of books out there, but it's really difficult to choose between them, so some personal experiences and preferences would be great to hear!
EDIT:
Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I will have a look at them all! Maybe I'll post here again after or during my "vacation". :)
We recently completed the custom loft railing !
Another property owner was visiting so I wanted to put together a little lagnaippe gift basket of choice kale, spinach, chard, tetragonia, claytonia and a half dozen quaill eggs.
My cold frames are doing great, even when pur mountain lows dip below freezing. Still 6 +/- weeks from frost free planting for us up here but the garden is coming along nicely and growing about as fast as I can eat it!]
Thanks y'all!! Be Easy!!
Hey folks. I’m in the process of moving to a new spot that is SUPER DAMP - very foggy/misty/dewy. It rains maybe once per week and then the soil/land just holdssss that water. We also get a bunch of warm sunshine, in between. The result is gorgeous weather but EVERYTHING is going mouldy or rusty immediately.
I’m looking for recommendations on how to store valuable music equipment and also boxes of books while we’re transitioning to a new tiny house (which won’t be available for dry storage for another few months while we live in the caravan). Storage will be in rain-proof but still damp/humid sheds, or if there’s products particularly good, then on and under tarps.
Do you live somewhere wet and have great solutions for this? Maybe sealed storage boxes (peli cases etc) or low power dehumidifiers (solar)? Maybe dehumidifiers that contain their own solar power? Keen to stay away from salt/chemical dehumidification because we will use the grey water.
Located in NSW, Australia, and happy to get things locally or online, pending shipping prices etc.
Advice or pics of your setups very welcome! TIA!
I hope this counts as an off grid related post (I'm planning to live off grid on this property)
Recently I bought some raw land and I just got the permit for the driveway I'm planning to install but the land is on a county road and the county will be installing a culvert pipe around the gas line that runs along the road under my driveway apron.
They said I need a 30 foot long culvert pipe but I haven't been able to find anywhere in my state that sells 30 foot long sections of culvert pipes so far. Does anyone know what kind of place I might be able to find this, I'm hoping to get a dual walled plastic culvert pipe 12in diameter?
alternatively, do you think I would be able to use three 10 foot sections and also buy couplers to combine them into a 30 foot pipe? I'm planning to ask them this after the weekend also but just thought I'd ask here first so I can try to move on this since I'm hoping to get the driveway done by July.
Also in case it is relevant I'm in Ohio. thanks.
Hi all,
My wife and I are looking to down shift to some land in Tasmania. We have a cool temperate climate and it can get to around zero celsius (freezing point) in the middle of winter and the summers are pretty mild.
We are going to have a pretty small budget once the land is purchased and it’s unlikely we’ll be to afford something with a pre-existing dwelling.
Plan is to start with something small until we can build or just stay at the small scale.
The tiny home would likely have to fit on a trailer for planning.
My initial thoughts are the house would be the most expensive but you could be properly insulated where as an older caravan or bus would be more difficult to heat with the bus being the coldest option.
Would be interested in others experiences.
So I’m a 22 y/o male. How would I find a woman that is willing to live off the land?? Don’t get me wrong I still like my luxury’s but all the women I meet in public or on dating apps don’t even want do step foot in the woods. Any advice?
