Some of my channels are getting dropped at certain times. Shall I purchase a new antenna?

I've experienced this problem for well over a week as of when I posted this. I've noticed that when certain local channels get dropped, I used to keep rescanning while moving the antenna to different locations throughout my room but that doesn't help no matter where i reposition my antenna to.

However when this does happen, I've noticed that at around 10pm or during the tail end of the 9pm hour when I rescan my channels come back.

The channels affected by this issue are my two favorite over-the-air channels H&I (Heroes and Icons) and CourtTV, oh, and my local ABC channel which doesn't really help considering the majority of what I usually watch on TV is on ABC. In case it matters I reside on the upper floor of a two-story apartment complex.

I'm thinking it may be time for me to purchase a new antenna. I can't remember when I bought this one but it was in 2023 to replace the first one I was having issues with for a time, after about a good few months of use.

I am using an onn amplifier I purchased from Walmart for 8 bucks. I'm definitely returning it because it doesn't seem to have helped.

I guess I'm wondering if I should buy a new antenna instead of a new amplifier?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance. :)

I don't understand...

I feel like my reception suddenly and for no obvious reason changed...

Rabbit ears: https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1299380

I had been getting "full" range ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, Ion, PBS, etc... These ranged from 3.1 to 66.1. Suddenly I can only get 3 and 13. How do I figure out if it is my TV, the amp/decoder, the anetnna, or reception/sun spots?

I only recently (for the last year) moved to rural Florida, between Tampa and Orlando. For the last 20 years in highly urban areas I've not paid attention to technology related to these questions. Mostly just had cable TV for those years. Fiber/Cable is not an option at my location now. Cell service is not 100% with a GoFi booster; without the booster it is essentially no cell service at my home.

Antenna: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BR45YB7W/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is currently pointed SE towards Tampa/St. Pete. During the NFL season I tried to make use of the claimed 180 degree and catch Tampa and Orlando -- I was slightly successful. When I suddenly had issued I aimed SE to maximize my directional capacity.

TV: sony KDL-50W This is a 7+ year old "smart" TV, which I thought was decent (above entry level not amazing), but I know doesn't have all modern features.

Suggestions?

What can I do to improve 1 channel

https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1295575

So the iffy channel is Fox 13.1 and it's only an issue when it rains but in the PNW that's most of the time.

A real time example of what it looks like https://imgur.com/tZVEmdJ

I have this antenna https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BP4RF3O in the attic positioned as good as I can with a brand new coax run (~20') to a hdhomerun.

Just trying to figure out what my options are.

OTA Station Program Info

It seems many of the stations in the Boston (MA) market have given up on populating their OTA feeds with program info. My OTA set is not that old, maybe about 5 years, and it picks up local stations fine, but often the INFO buttons available show no program title and no further description. And sometimes the program playing may not be correct. I've seen a western program playing but get a description for a Flintstone cartoon. I have brought this to the attention of several stations via their contact pages with no relief. The feeds and their info on my cable set at the other end of the house is always correct, so either these are different databases or programmed separately.

Since the stations have been silent on a fix, what other alternatives exist to ask them to be nice and do their job? I'd complain to the FCC but of late all they do is flag the complaint to stations or cell carriers and connect you with the individual company's non-cooperative customer support people.

I even tried their Facebook accounts. All I would like to see is the program title and maybe something about it. Seems that is too much to ask, and as I see it, they should be bound to do something. FWIW, there are some OTA-only stations in my area doing the same thing.

Am I wrong?

Short Distance but in a Canyon

I just moved to a street in LA that sits at the bottom of a canyon. So I’m only 16 mi from the broadcast antennae but very obstructed by mountains.

https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1285436

I can mount something in an attic or outdoors, but there is no hope of mounting high enough to clear the terrain.

I could probably get my wife onboard with a “tastefully sized” outdoor antenna or I could do pretty much anything inside the attic.

I would love anyone’s advice/suggestions/ideas.

Edit: added a pic of the canyon obstruction

Do you expect noise from intermod or adjacent channel interference is a big underrated problem?

https://www.tvtechnology.com/opinions/repacking-likely-to-multiply-interference

The basic idea is channel transmitter siting has an effect in what the noise floor will be on adjacent channels and by extension what your snr will be on reception.

For instance I have a channel 22 and 24 10 miles from me the 22 emits one megawatt of power and I see how much power spills on to channel 23. Basically the first third of the channel 23's bandwidth is filled with ATSC noise that is over 10 db above the noise floor which sits at around -100 dbm.

Perhaps your reception sucks more because of this increased noise floor from adjacent tv stations along with everything else like your tv noise figure, your electronics and more

Feel like it might not be worth it

Hi, I recently moved into an apartment in an area that's already kind of low on strong stations near me. Worse yet, most of the strong, local stations are pointed the exact opposite way of where my bedroom is at (facing southwest, stations in northeast), where I'd plan to install any antenna (most likely just an indoor one). I can't mount it on the roof, and mounting it outside my window seems like a no-go not only cause the exterior of the house is basically stone, but because the antenna would be pointed away from any strong signals in my area. Here's my rabbitears link: https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1282822

Is it even worth trying to set up an antenna for my situation? From the report I got, I wouldn't be able to pick up any major networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. It seems like the odds are against me here. Thank you!

My Attic Mount Antenna

It was over 100 degrees in the attic. So it made sense to just mount the j-pole and cabling to a scrap piece of 2x4 where there's air conditioning. So it was a simple matter to find a rafter pointing the general direction and drive a couple of pre drilled screws. Once the cables were connected I could get out of the heat.

The antenna came with a powered RF amp/splitter that I mounted behind the TV. The splitter has a run to the main TV in the house and to a Flex4k unit. Reception is excellent

Are there any portable handheld mini TVs (3-8 inches) operating by Double AA batteries that will still receive broadcasting from current OTA stations?

I just bought a handheld radio player from the local dollar store for 8 bucks. Loved it so far that I decided to also buy a portable mini handheld TV. There were non at that same store so far the past hour I was searching online to buy some and I almost bought a Casio Handheld TV until I read that they no longer receive signals from current antenna OTA broadcasting towers.

So for modern stuff I found on Amazon, all handheld mini TV either require an outlet plug or are charged by plug or USB connection.........

This will not do for me. Because of my lifestyle, I almost entirely use Double AA and Triple AAA devices. Don't ask for deeper details, I travel a lot is all I'll say. And this is why I bought this handheld mini portable radio, because I saw it operated by double AA when I was at the dollar store to buy something else.

Are there any handheld portable mini TVs that use Double AA batteries that will still work work with modern TV station broadcasting to receive shows? Preferably that comes with a handstrap? (sounds stupid I know but the mini radio I bought has one attached by default and I been surprised at how freaking useful its been!)

If there's none using Double AA or eve triple AAA batteries, I'm fine even with using D size or larger batteries so long as the mini TV is battery-powered!

Anybody in Vermont - Can You Pick Up Any Canadian TV Channels?

As a kid I loved that both antenna and eventually cable TV had a variety of Canadian channels. As far as OTA goes, my area would get the usual NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, MeTV and PBS. But I'm wondering if I can get any of the main Canadian stations like CCTV, CBC, etc.

I've tried a few of those sites where you put in your zip code and tells you what you should be able to pick up and I don't see any of them.

Also, if a channel isn't listed can you find it with a scan? Or if you know the specific frequency / channel number can you enter it to pick up that channel?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys!

My TV gets broadcasts, my stereo gets FM. How do I get AM?

What’s the best way to go? Some kind of tuner card for my PC? A cheap handheld? Electronics kit?

Atsc 3.0 looks good in Philly

I noticed that my Sony X900h tv is receiving ATSC 3.0 channels in the Philadelphia, PA market. I can finally watch WPVI channel 6. The picture quality is much improved and seems like the color, motion and resolution is much richer.

Question… it’s long been known that ABC and Fox broadcast in 720p. However the ATSC 3 versions are showing in 1080p. Does this mean the national networks are now mastering and producing material in 1080p, or are the local stations upscaling national source content? It does look a lot better, and the signal quality is great. I never could get WPVI, but even compared to other stations KYW3, WCAU10, WTXF29 for example never seem to drop out, unlike their ATSC 1.0 counterparts. WGAL 8.1 through 8.7 for example is a little choppy. Channel 10 ATSC 1.0 is better but still not impervious to noise. However Channel 10 ATSC 3.0 is as stable as a Satellite feed, just clearer and more vivid than DirecTV.

Curious if your market has ATSC 3.0 and you’ve noticed visual quality and signal reliability improvements.

I need a new dvr. 1.0 or 3.0?

I think my airtv anywhere is officially dead. I’d like a new dvr but not sure if 3.0 has many good options. Should I just go with the 1.0 and keep it until it’s no longer supported?

What would happen if all broadcasters adopt unencrypted ATSC 3.0 with a minimum signal to noise ratio of 36 and focus exclusively on populated areas?

An unlikely scenario

i wonder if ota increase broadcast signal during a superbowl

my ota antenna:tuner gets a fringe signal from CBS (for whatever reason), so i usually suffer many frame skips and audio:video out of sync (no matter the weather). now i'm watching the game flawlessly, so maybe the broadcast tower itself gets a boost on game day.

OTA tower antennae

hi, i have a tower antennae thats like 40ft high. im in south ontario, about 60-70 miles from detroit where i point the antennae to get channels. however the signal is usually weak. i've just read about digital signal antennae's and im wondering should i buy one or buy a analog to digital converter box? trying to research online but i dont understand any of it . thanks. i also have a channel master tuner that changes direction of antennae but it hasn't really made much of a difference.

Would an amplifier at my antenna help here.

I have an antenna in my attic that has been working great. My setup is in the diagram. Here is my issue. For the last year I was getting 58 channels on all devices pictured with that setup. Now, I only get 50 and it's driving me crazy trying to solve why. Would an amplifier at the antenna make any difference? Currently there are 2 passive splitters and 1 amplified splitter.

I did add MoCa to the mix about 2 months ago, but the HDHomerun is connected seperate from the amplified splitter and only gets the 50 channels. Also, 2 of the second floor tvs are connected before the amplified splitter and both get the 50 channels. The MoCa signal is on the amplified splitter.

Thinking about Stellar Labs 30-2475 for my specific use case

I have flaky reception on RF13 & RF23. For the most part they are watchable but periodically they drop out and in bad weather they're gone.

I'm thinking that maybe I ditch the combined antenna and use dedicated for vhf high and uhf since I have literally one vhf high station that I care about.

I'm thinking about a 30-2475 to make RF13 stable. I have an old DB4e with the reflector off that I'd use for the UHF -- IIRC it worked really well for this location.

Does anyone have experience with the 30-2475? I remember reading it was reasonable for this particular purpose (directional vhf high)

Please recommend an attic antenna for a house located in the South Bay of Los Angeles

I have a two-story house with a large attic that has lots of room for an antenna.

I plan on connecting the antenna to a single source, an HDHomeRun Flex 4K.

From what I've read, since my RG6 cable is going to be a short run, probably around 20 feet, I don't need an amplifier or anything to remove FM/LTE interference. Let me know if that's not correct though.

Here's my RabbitEars report:
https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php?request=result&study_id=1252476

I know absolutely nothing about antennas, so I don't know what would work best in my situation and location. I've heard good things about the ClearStream 2V which seems more omnidirectional? Would something like an RCA Yagi antenna work better for my location, since most towers seem to be to my North East?

OTA signal interrupted by living room lamps

Something super odd is happening: we noticed that when we turn on the lamps in the living room, it seems that the HI-V channels completely break up. UHF seems to be unaffected.

Are there any options to avoid this (other than keeping the lights off)? Do we need a different antenna?

Repurpose Satellite Dish Plumbing

I have a decommissioned dish on the roof and I'd like to use the vertical pipe that held it, as well as the cable run to my TV. Any suggestions for a passive antenna?

Antenna recommendation

https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1247737

Looking for a recommendation for the above rabbitears for a relative. This is an easy one to get a signal, but ss this perhaps a case for an indoor antenna? I live further out, so all my experience is in outdoor ones. If indoor, what kinds actually work? My go to simple outdoor antenna doesn't seem to be currently sold, so I would appreciate a recommendation either way. We do have to pick up VHF because of Fox in our area.

Thanks for any help.
