Hi Reddit. I am looking for advice. My next door neighbour is a family and they have a young kid (maybe 7-8 years old). During 6-9pm, I can hear the kid running around (thumping noises/jumping noises) and dragging the dining room chairs. I've approached the parents once before when they've had a loud party but they quickly shut it down by telling me that "it wasn't 9pm" yet (so within the bylaw quiet hours so they could do whatever). I feel like I'm at my wits end because the chair dragging sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I can't afford to move. I am thinking about writing to my strata council but I also feel like I don't have a strong case on my end as they may consider it a part of normal life when you have shared walls. Has anyone gone through anything similar and how did you solve these kinds of problems?

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas in New West! Where are some of the best Christmas light displays? I saw a pretty good one on 6th Ave, where are some others to go see?
Hi everyone,
I have been living in downtown for 6 months and I have grown to a state where I can't stand the construction noise anymore. It disrupts my daily activities and I can't seem to be productive at all. The two huge construction sites seem to be really slow at construction despite the constant jarring noise. They have been going at it for about a year apparently and they haven't even laid out the foundation yet. This is wild compared to other countries. Does anyone have any soundproofing ideas that don't result in fully blocked out windows? I should mention that I am a renter and can't drill holes. If there isn't a viable solution, I will be moving out of here, I genuinely don't think this place is worth the rent. I am paying 2200 + utilities for a 1 bed 1 bath. The construction noise starts is 7 am to 8 pm??? Really? In a residential area?? Also why are these equipment so loud? I have been near construction sites before in other countries which use more man power than machinery and are much faster in construction with bearable noise levels.
Sorry for the rant but would love any and all advice.
TIA!
I got severely ill from what I thought was a bad McDonalds lunch on Saturday. Been bedridden/toiletridden since then and am finally feeling well enough to get back to work tomorrow. Suddenly last night my partner experiences the same thing and it looks like she will be home for the next while too. She hasn't been to a mcdonalds in ages and last night we ate the same dinner she prepared.
Not searching for medical advice, just wondering if its something in the air maybe.
EDIT: Thanks for the quick replies everyone, Im sleeping on the couch tonight haha
Found keys at New West station around 3:30 today. They were on the south platform when I got off the King George train. I tried to find a transit employee, but of course it's the day none are around :/
Sea of fog this morning.
Quick question, one of the lanes is supposed to be for pedestrians to cross the bridge. My question is how many of you would be likely to walk over the bridge after the initial excitement when it opens? Is there anything of interest within walking distance on the Surrey side? Would the lane be better utilized for additional vehicle capacity?
Here’s a link to an article outlining the deets to a degree.

Looking West towards the QB bridge...smoke has slowly been building in the last hour or so and getting darker.
Does anyone know when the part of the quayside park currently blocked due to construction behind the Fraser River Center will be opened? I see condos in the BOSA buildings already being advertised for rent so I am assuming construction is finished.
What are your thoughts on these things? Why are there so many of them around Vancouver all of a sudden?
Have a chaise that needs spring tightening and I am also looking to upgrade the upholstery. Currently it's fabric. Want to upgrade it to leather/leatherrite maybe.
Open to the public and free board game night at 5pm

Bring games and snacks to share
I found a pair of headphones at pier park today (Nov 29th). If you think they might be yours PM me the brand and where in the park you lost them. Hope I can find the owner. If anyone has any other suggestions to help me find the owner let me know.
We are your local team (Terminal City) and we're hosting a game this Sunday. And it's true, we do smash into other humans while speeding around on roller skates!
We're playing at the Poirier Forum (618 Poirier Street); doors open at 1:00pm, with the first whistle at 1:30pm. Snacks, drinks, and merch are available to purchase, and entry is by donation. That being said, no one is ever turned away for lack of funds and donations are always optional.
Please dress warmly! Our venue is cold (same temp as outside usually). There are small bleachers in the venue, but we recommend bringing camping chairs to sit trackside for the best view of the action. This is also a family-friendly event, and we work hard to make sure our games are safe and fun.
If you don't know what roller derby is or would like a rundown of the rules, check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OId6gTd2LCM for a quick (1 minute) explanation!
A game takes about 90 minutes including halftime and timeouts. We hope to see you there :)
What's Columbia like? Is it safe, or is it sketchy? How is the service in and out of it?
I currently live in Vancouver and am renting, but I am looking at condos in New West and trying to get a feel for the area. I've only been out there a handful of times, so it's hardly enough to make a super-educated decision about the city. I'm pleasantly surprised to see condos much better priced and space-wise than Vancouver and Richmond, but it has me wondering why? The commute doesn't seem significantly different from most of Richmond to Vancouver.
I am vaguely aware that New West has historically had a bad reputation, but every time I've been, it seems fine. What am I missing, and what should I be concerned about if I decide to move out here?
Does anyone know what happened at the Queens Park at home last night in Victoria Hill? Multiple police cars rushed there around 9 PM. Also ambulance later.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH DOG OWNERS LATELY?!? This city has become so dirty as a whole, covered in garbage and cigarette butts which is shameful enough given we live on a shoreline. I don’t know what has gotten into people and not picking up after their dogs! It’s absolutely disgusting. I am a dog walker and the neighbourhoods between 12th street and 22nd are clearly inhabited by dog owning pigs. There is shit everywhere. I barely want to walk on the ground with food shoes it’s so gross! Not to mention the amount of bones left lying around the streets which leads me to believe people are doing this on purpose. You have to be a real piece of shit in life no pun intended to treat your neighbourhood like a dumping ground because you’re to lazy to do the bare minimum as a member of society.
I have a Landmark Cinemas movie ticket & popcorn bundle coupon for BCAA members. I usually get the ticket in advance online but found the only option for this coupon is to get the ticket & popcorn in person.
Does the Landmark Cinemas in New West have desks where you can buy the tickets manually with a staff member (not by kiosk machines)?
Does anyone know if the coupon is for the night time only or does it apply to other times?
Tried calling Landmark but no response… if anyone knows, any info shared will be much appreciated.
UPDATE: I went to Landmarks on Saturday. I showed the coupon to the person at the door and he let me in. I went to the concession desk, and the staff member let me buy the movie ticket for my selected day and time (not night time btw). I paid in advance and the staff member gave me the voucher for the movie ticket + popcorn and drink. You can pay extra money on the day if you want to change the size to large.
First, I hope everyone got what they wanted this go around. I barely managed to squeak in a swim class for my 4 year old.
I’m wondering if anyone has any great ideas to improve the system? I’m going to list out a few problems I tend to have with it:
Explanation: This is a big one for me. Thursday at 10 AM? This only works for people who work from home or at a desk or who aren’t at work at the at time, which is certainly a minority of the population. I had to take unpaid time during my day to register today, for instance, and as I’m on the road I had to rely on Starbucks wifi.
Ways to improve: I’d like to see weekend registration. I think that would be easier for very many people to swing. It’s not perfect but I think it’s better than 10 on a weekday.
Potential problems: won’t work for anyone, might require additional staff to work on a weekend
Ex: I think swim is the Big One for a lot of parents I talk to. It’s super competitive and a lot of the other courses take backseat to these. When I register I immediately try to get a swim class and I make sure that any other courses I might be picking work with the swim. If I have to cancel something else, I do it over swim.
This cycle, I noticed two classes opened up at about 10:10 : my theory is that someone held these classes (or multiple classes) and dropped swim once they aligned their other classes. I get it, but it would be nice to be able to restrict someone from holding more than one class.
Ways to improve: well obviously more courses, but I think staggered registration would make this easier. Maybe have swim registration the day before other course registration. This would conceivably put less strain on the system. As well, restrict users from holding on to multiple classes for one student.
Ex: it’s such a pain to plan out a schedule. My process is to start with swim, and then make sure any other courses don’t conflict generally with it. So if swim is M/W, all other courses need to be Tuesday/Thursday/Fri or at such a time it’s not an issue. My planning is quite analog, because I need to have some mobility. Maybe I can’t get the swim class at such and such a time, or skating is now interfering with Gymnastics, etc. And when you do go to pay for a course, the time shows up and the dates as well, but the days of the week don’t.
Ways to improve: it would be nice if there was a “course planner” on the registration system and it would be nice if it gave warnings based on either system or user-defined parameters. I almost signed my kid up for swim and skate with a five minute break between classes; getting from temesewetx to Moody Park in five minutes isn’t really achievable, unless maybe you drive extremely fast and put the skates on while you drive, but that sounds dicey. Also, listing the days on the course checkout screen would be nice.
Ex: the site will list classes presently in session by default. This is a drag because if you want to find your course, you need to scroll past classes you definitely don’t want.
Ways to improve: have a separate flag just for the next guide, eg winter, spring.
Ex: search is finicky at best.
Ways to improve: allow more generic terms, have an ability to just search by course number. Search should return results in a sensible order; right now it seems to jump around at random based on age or other criteria.
Ex: there are way too many subcategories. Preschool, child, preschool (3), etc. I got a little screwed because my kiddo turns 4 over the break so some of the classes I wanted, she’s now ineligible for because they’re 3-4 inclusive. So I need to hit back, find the right one, etc. I understand the point of the granularity, but it’s way too granular.
Ways to improve: Just list all the swim classes from youngest to oldest and let the user scroll down to the one they want (“Child 4”, “Preschool Tots 2 Intermediate”, whatever.)
Been craving a good calzone but don't wanna succumb to Pizza Pizza... does anyone know a spot?
From their Instagram account:
Hey……well….we are back! We just received approval to build our second bathroom, and also approval to continue operating the arcade part time as we’ve been doing the past 4 years during non industrial hours (Our space is primarily used for Industrial use for our vending and ‘pop up’ rentals in the lower mainland by )
We are opening up the 2025 schedule today. To note, we will have a 2 week closure sometime early in 2025 for the bathroom build out and we will post when that will be. It’s such a relief to finally get past these two hurdles! A big thanks to everyone’s support during this time, everyone who shared our story only helped with us getting back on our feet, and we all are so lucky to have you nice people around.
