Sudden major network problems?

My brother who lives in an apartment building recently complained about having super high ping in games all of a sudden, Valorant was report latency, jitter, packet loss, all the bad things and upwards of 350ms. He has it in Siege a well, just not as severe but still bad. Some things he has told me:

  • His roommate doesn't have these problems
  • He AND his roommate both use USB wifi
  • Problem arose about two weeks ago
  • It seems to co-align with when he brought his PC to my house (I have good wifi) to do some stuff and when he went home, boom, he has the problem (according to him) - possible coincidence
  • Most the problems he say seems to be with the game Valorant, also Siege and other games but Valorant has it the worst
  • When he plays Siege he seems to have a lower ping like 50-60 but it has jitter warnings at severe all the time
  • He's tried multiple USB wifi adapters
  • He's updated network drivers and all that jazz
  • He tried ipconfig /release, renew, flushdns
  • He does not have physical access to his router (he lives in an apartment complex), he says he has his OWN router, he says he knows this because he can upgrade it if he wants? I don't know
  • His Wi-Fi has been pretty much fine for like 2 years, his problems seem to coincide with when he brought his PC to my house (we didn't do anything to it like upgrade anything) and when he returned back to his apartment, this is very sudden and odd
  • When he runs speed tests he has like 10 latency so I'm very confused

I posted the TracerT information in a comment below, if it's up here it gets "Post removed by Reddit filters"

Ping Spikes/Latency issues on PS5 (Xfinity Comcast) HELP PLS

oh my lord i’ve been facing this problem for so long now and i just can’t seem to get an answer. luckily i do have a technician coming out in a few days but it would still be cool if i could get a better understand as to what is happening, going on, if there is a way to fix it, or anything.

but yeah basically i have xfinity comcast internet with a 300 download plan (not too sure what the upload is but maybe 100). so super fast internet that is supposed to sustain my gaming. but ever since i moved to where i have (small apartment building), i cannot seem to get this internet crap down.

my problem is when i play video games, rainbow six siege currently, i will be pulling like 30-40 ping which is awesome and im happy with. but all of the sudden it will shoot up to 100-120 ping for 3-4 minutes all while still holding super fast speeds.

i thought maybe i need a new ethernet, router, or modem. i went ahead and bought all 3 brand new of everything. ended up getting a router and modem that wasn’t enough for how much download i could get so i went back and got a router/modem that is pretty dang power from what i can understand. epsically seeing as i live in a one bedroom apartment all for myself. the router/modem i got was NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 DOCSIS 3.1 Dual-Band AX6000 Cable Modem/WiFi Router Combo. i also got a cat 7 gold whatever ethernet cord.

yes my internet was better. even pulling up 600 download and whatever upload. i run like 20-50 ping (which honestly i still want lower), but it still freaking shoots up all the way from 85-120 ping! i even port forwarded rainbow for ps5 (i believe if i did it correctly that is). and man i have spent HOURS on customer service to no avail. if anyone has any solutions or advice or can talk. i would so much appreciate it!! thank you.

Slow download speed but fast upload speed with Intel AX210

Hi, good day! I'm kind of stuck in a rut here since I installed an Intel AX210 on my PC's m.2 slot on the motherboard and for some reason when I do a speed test the download speed goes from 200mbps then dies down to 80 (See picture). But then the upload speed stays at a constant 200mbps so I'm not sure what to do.

Already updated the drivers and changed settings in the device manager.

How to achieve access speed overlay between switch and NAS via link aggregation

Two models for reference:

SKS3200M-4GPY2XF

SKS3200M-8GPY1XF

Version V1.9 firmware can realize dynamic aggregation, and it is easy to realize 5G LAN access to NAS through dual-line connection.

Windows public vs. private networks?

I have my home network configured as a private network. Looking at the text on the Windows setting page, it seems to me the description of Public network and Private network are reversed. It recommends a public network. I'd think for an intranet, you'd want a private network (and MS Copilot seems to agree). Am I wrong?

https://preview.redd.it/ugzz4oiiswsc1.png?width=866&format=png&auto=webp&s=90491dd5392b58b9ec08ec2cc0c465bd0b5fffec

According to Copilot:

The difference between a private and public network primarily lies in security and network discovery settings.

In essence, Windows treats private networks as trusted environments where sharing is common, while it considers public networks as untrusted and restricts visibility to protect your data and privacy2.

Changed the speed and duplex to 2.5gbps but link speed still says 100mbps and is limited, any help?

Hi so basically I got new gigabit internet in and everythings working fine on wifi but the ethernet connection to my pc is limited at 90-100mbps, its getting pretty frustrating. I had it working perfectly by switching the speed and duplex of the adapter but all of a sudden it just reverted? but the speed and duplex in the device manager have stayed the same, the cables the same, nothing physical changed.

I am on windows 11, using a realtek 2.5gbe family connector, cat6a cable of 30ft. Any help greatly appreciated, I feel like its hardware related but I am just not sure at this stage.

Underwater fiber history

Hey lads,

I'm learning about fiber optics, how it works, etc. In a video on YouTube, they mentioned that there are a handful of companies that have set up and maintain fiber that crosses seas. I'm assuming this is for critical data that needs to get to its destination. Otherwise, why not send data via through satellites and then send it back down on earth (this could be a dumb thought process).

Is there a history or video on how they set up those fibers under the sea. I can't imagine it was easy and the expense must've been huge. I think it's interesting and would like to see how they got this done.

Thanks guys!

Network and security system

What are the recommendations for setting up network equipment to which many surveillance cameras, network sensors and operator workstations are connected? Which protocols must be used and which should be avoided? What are the best practices?

Troubles accessing HP Switch using Putty

Hello!
I'm having some troubles trying to access the HP V1910-24G switch through serial/console using Putty. I'm using a serial PCI adapter on a desktop, which has its drivers updated.

When I connect using Putty it only gives me a black screen on the terminal and nothing else, even if I restart the switch with the session connected. I also already tried hitting [enter] and [space] keys but nothing happens.
There's an UTP cable on the first port connected to the Internet Modem, and a cable om the second port connected to the desktop.
On Putty, I'm using the correct baud rate (38400) and none flow control because it gives me an error while trying to use XON/XOFF.
Does anyone have a clue on what this might be?
Thanks for the help.

How to understand when proxies are lying: verification of physical locations of network proxies using an active geolocation algorithm

https://preview.redd.it/536wcqm5zlsc1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=52cd987242feaba5cdb9f66208e000ac6e262c4d

People all over the world use commercial proxies (residential proxy) to hide their true location or identity. This can be done to solve various tasks, including accessing blocked information or ensuring privacy.

But how correct are the providers of such proxies when they claim that their servers are located in a certain country? This is a fundamentally important question, the answer to which depends on whether it is possible to use a certain service at all for those customers who are concerned about protecting personal information.

A group of American scientists from the Universities of Massachusetts, Carnegie Mellon and Stony Brook published a study in which they checked the real locations of the servers of seven popular proxy providers. We have prepared a short summary of the main results.

Introduction

Proxy operators often do not provide any information that could confirm the accuracy of their statements about the location of servers. IP-to-location databases usually confirm the advertising theses of such companies, however, there is a large amount of evidence of errors in these databases.

In the course of the study, American scientists estimated the location of 2,269 proxy servers operated by seven proxy companies and located in a total of 222 countries and territories. The analysis showed that at least a third of all servers are not located in the countries that companies claim in their marketing materials. Instead, they are located in countries with cheap and reliable hosting: The Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Server locations analysis

Commercial VPN and proxy providers can affect the accuracy of the IP-to-location databases – companies have the ability to manipulate, for example, location codes in router names. As a result, marketing materials may claim a large number of locations available to users, whereas in reality, to save money and improve reliability, servers are physically located in a small number of countries, although IP-to-location databases indicate the opposite.

To check the real locations of the servers, the researchers used an active geolocation algorithm. It was used to evaluate the roundtrip of a packet sent to the server side and to other well-known hosts on the Internet.

At the same time, only less than 10% of the tested proxies respond to ping, and scientists could not run any measurement software on the server itself for obvious reasons. They only had the ability to send packets through a proxy, so the roundtrip to any point in space is the amount of time it takes for a packet to reach from the test host to the proxy and from the proxy to the destination.

https://preview.redd.it/ow29ntv7zlsc1.png?width=831&format=png&auto=webp&s=06d57fac413f2e05565a2bf1db597500ce8bc429

During the research, specialized software was developed based on four active geolocation algorithms: CBG, Octant, Spotter, and hybrid Octant/Spotter. The solution code is available on GitHub.

Since it was impossible to rely on the IP-to-location database, the researchers used a list of RIPE Atlas anchor hosts for the experiments – the information in this database is available online, it is constantly updated, and the documented locations are correct, moreover, hosts from the list constantly send ping signals to each other and update roundtrip data in a public database.

The solutions developed by scientists is a web application that establishes secure (HTTPS) TCP connections over an unsecured HTTP 80 port. If the server is not responding to this port, then a failure will occur after one request, however, if the server is responding to this port, the browser will receive a SYN-ACK response with the TLS ClientHello packet. This will trigger a protocol error, and the browser will display the error, but only after the second roundtrip.

https://preview.redd.it/k7ldkvxazlsc1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=e7f5d39193362bc16c59e0e1dbb7864a4e457261

Thus, the web application can measure the time of one or two roundtrips. A similar service was implemented in the form of a program run from the command line.

None of the tested providers names the exact location of their proxy servers. At best, cities are mentioned, but most often there is information only about the country. Even when the city is mentioned, incidents can occur – for example, researchers studied the configuration file of one of the servers called usa.new-york-city.cfg, which contained instructions for connecting to a server called chicago.vpn-provider.example. So you can more or less accurately confirm only that the server belongs to a specific country.

Results

Based on the results of tests using the active geolocation algorithm, the researchers were able to confirm the locations of 989 of the 2,269 IP addresses. In the case of 642, this could not be done, and 638 are definitely not in the country where they should be according to the assurances of the proxy services. More than 400 of these false addresses are actually located on the same continent as the declared country.

https://preview.redd.it/a2urdtbizlsc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9f1226e6ab10c9457e1186e07a92b9875cf968c

Suspicious hosts were found on each of the seven providers tested. The researchers asked the companies for comments, but they all declined to communicate.

Bandwidth probelm - is this normal?

Hey guys,

I have a server located in europe with 2500 mbps donwnload and 1500 mbps upload.

https://preview.redd.it/fjoci6emtlsc1.png?width=486&format=png&auto=webp&s=45b34bfe85e724449102fab5dc487ae5cf26f214

My home personal PC speed from my ISP is 600 mbps and 100 mbps

https://preview.redd.it/omt03h9xtlsc1.png?width=890&format=png&auto=webp&s=9072c0cd3d3653532ed510b3d2bed7ee288c18da

A ping test between my pc and the server shows arround 80-90 latency.

However, when i perform an iperf test or try to do a file transfer test with Filezilla or even a web download http from server to pc , i always get slow speeds of maximum 1-1.5 mb/s.

On my personal computer when i download files from the internet from Steam, torrents, web, i can get up to 60-70 mb/s, but when i try to do any download communications from my server it never passes 1-1.5 mb/s.

Is this normal?

***EDIT****
Adding an OpenSpeedTest result that was installed on my server, and test was perfromed from my PC

Can I use my Synology NAS as a router?

I have a DS920+ with two LAN ports, can I connect LAN1 to the Internet and use LAN2 as a local network like a router?

I know that Synology NAS has DHCP function, but I could not access the Internet from the device connected to the LAN2 side. Can this be easily achieved by changing the default gateway or other settings? Or is it impossible to use the Synology NAS as a router?

What we want to do is simply,

  1. Set up a network with its own IP segment on LAN2 along with DHCP.(This has been achieved)

  2. Access the Internet via the NAS from devices connected to LAN2.

Thanks.

Issue with computers seeing each other on the network.

Computer 1: Desktop running windows 10 ethernet connected to Netgear Nighthawk Mesh Router. Sharing setup for a couple folders etc.

Computer 2: Laptop running windows 11 wifi connected. A few folders setup for sharing

Computer 3: Laptop running windows 11 wifi connected. A few folders setup for sharing

So both laptops can see the Desktop and the Desktop can see the laptops and can share/access files in the shared folders. Laptop to Desktop and vice versa works perfectly. Can also ping and get a response from Desktop to laptops and vice versa.

However, the two laptops won't talk to each other. They can't see each other and if I ping they don't ping each other. If I enter IP address in Address field again nothing. Just get a can't connect to other computer type error. I'd tried to turn on all the suggested services etc, nothing seems to allow them to see each other. Firewalls are turned off on both laptops, that did nothing.

I've tried a lot of googling and everything, but can't find something to get it working.

Port forward alternative

My apartment complex decided to “upgrade” our WiFi to a new cox community WiFi system. It’s awful, half of my devices didn’t work with it so I had to buy my own router and my speeds got cut in half. Not why I’m making this post but it frustrates me every day lol

I have a home server that I had exposed with a reverse proxy on the old internet system, but with this new system I’m unable to open any ports, even with my own router. I’m kinda lost on what I can do to get similar functionality back without having to use a VPN. A VPN would work, but I would prefer to be able to access my services from any machine regardless of whether or not my device has the VPN downloaded

Any input is appreciated! I know I’m probably just out of luck but I figured I would consult the internet before I gave up

Internet Speed Issue T-T

Hey network people, I've been having a weird problem on my PC since pretty much when I got it (4years ago :0) So I always get a monthly subscription of internet with 30MBps of speed which is exactly what it shows on lnternet speed test websites but whenever I go to download any files the speed fluctuates between 2-3MBps and rarely tops 4MBps I thought that was just how it worked (Cloud limitation not mine) till I saw others downloading games from steam and stuff in extreme speed. I do remember the speed randomly increasing to 14-15MBps once but came back down again I got no clue how's this happening or how to fix it.

also, I noticed if one software is downloading something for example free download manager at usual 3MBps an other software can still download something completely diffrent with same speed of 3MBPS which tells me the system is capable of using the high speed but chooses not to? if that makes sense?

IDK someone please help Thanks in advance

WAN Switch

Hi Network folks,
May i ask if I have 2 ISPs and 2 firewalls (HA setup), do I need to have a wan switch to interconnect them. Or I can direct connect them if my ISP router have 2 downlink ports and my firewall have 2 wan ports each without the wan switch.
I heard some of them say yes, some of them say no. Very confusing 😕. Can anyone explain?

When should i use the WAN switch?

Thank you.

Complicated wifi ethernet issue, help plz😭

Ik this is going to be probably a weird internet network issue I have but listen to my issue please. So for me to get internet in the place I live I use 4g LTE hotspot from my phone to my pc which is using a wifi dongle and I have a netgeat router connected to my pc via ethernet that has no internet connection to it. I use this router to connect other devices that don't need a internet connection but just a connection to my computer via wifi. Here is my issue having wifi and ethernet connection to my pc at the same time doesn't let me access the internet from my wifi connection but prioritizes the ethernet connection THAT HAS NO INTERNET. How do I make my pc use the internet connection from my wifi dongle? Help me 😭

Can i "split" a ethernet cable to 2 devices?

So, let me explain my situation.
I only have one ethernet cable in my room near my pc so my brother for the longest time had to use a cheap wifi usb adapter but its super unreliable and he wants something more reliable.
So i thought about using a switch to do so, i searched on my local site alza.cz and found the Tenda S105 so would that work?
