Having issues with a new-to-me Dell Precision 5820 tower; thought I'd cross-post this here in case there may be some Dell-specific issues afoot? (link to original post:)
"Hello folks, hoping for some advice on getting my new-to-me Dell Precision 5820 spun up as my new homelab. Here's the deal: When the computer has the stock (Xeon 2123, 4x16gb ECC ram) platform config, I can boot into the BIOS just fine. From there, I updated to the latest bios (rev. 2.39.0). All my RAM is detected as expected, drives, gpu, etc.
From there, I wanted to get a bit more juice from the platform, so I checked out Dell's official website, and found this(link) page listing compatible CPUs, and this(link) listing compatible RAM. Here's where I suspect the issue is; I know that non-xeon chips of this socket type don't support Registered ECC memory, so I purchased an i9-9940x (listed as compatible), and official Dell-branded SDRAM (SNP983D4C/32G), such as this (link). With the new CPU and RAM installed, the system won't post; it starts up, flashes the amber light behind the power button once, spins up the fans and drives for a few seconds, then shuts down and repeats. I've tried removing the CMOS battery (tried booting without it, and waiting overnight before booting with it installed), no dice. The strangest part to me is that, when I re-install the default components, it posts with no issue. Because the manual lists that:
- DDR4 ECC RDIMMs - Supported only with Xeon W Series CPUs
- DDR4 Non-ECC UDIMMs supported with Core X Series CPUs
I thought this config would be correct? I've also tried the non-ecc memory with an i9-7820x, same behavior.
Anyone have any ideas/things I've missed here? In following the literal Dell manual for compatibility, I thought I could avoid this type of troubleshooting. Any help is appreciated, thanks y'all!!!"
Thanks y'all, any help is appreciated!!!
Hello, I have a Dell Optiplex 9020. A big one not one of the small form factor ones. When I got it, I replaced the PSU to a 500 wat one, added ram, and put a RTX 2060 6GB in it. At first, everything was fine. There was a cpu bottle neck but I planned on getting a new one. Randomly the gpu stoped being detected. When I plugged it in through display port it didn’t work, so I switched to onboard display. The gpu isn’t being detected in the bios, device manger, task manger, when I open the navida app, it doesn’t detect one. The weird thing is, the gpu is active. The fan is spinning and it’s getting warm. Maybe a correlation, I updated the bios to A25 before it stoped working. I’ve tried downgrading the bios and it didn’t solve anything. Any help would be appreciated!
Would it be possible to get a dell employee discount code to purchase a laptop? Someone said to post here and might get lucky.
I changed cr2032 battery, I checked the RAM, switched power cables, checked all the connections, it’s still powering on and dying right after. Any suggestions?
Hello! Received a U2723QE as a warranty replacement, so it's likely a refurbished unit. I've got 10 days to send my defective unit back (which seemed to have fixed itself hours after I set up the warranty exchange...)
I've noticed something strange with the QE - about every 2 seconds there's a very slight contrast shift back and forth. Very slight! Noticeable more on grey images but elsewhere too. Also happens on the built in self test (grey screen). Has anyone else noticed this with this model? Not sure if I should send it back or not.
I heard that one of the reasons of why this model throttles is because of a bios error, if I reset my bios to factory settings, will this error be fixed?
My dad got me a 3020 any GPU and CPU remmconds?
Hi there so I just got a brand new laptop from my dads company and they needed to get rid of it so I got one. I would like to get a protective shell for it but I’m noticing on Amazon there’s only shells that fit a 5440 and such but not a dell precision 5470. What other protective cases fit on a 5470?
Thanks!
With this error. Disconnected battery and plugged it in and it works fine. Is my battery toast? Only had the laptop for 6 months
Hey everyone, I have an R16 and was looking into extending my Premium Support warranty. A little while ago, I got a quote that has since expired, but when I signed into my Dell.com account, I was able to see the same quote and even get a 10% discount (if I remember correctly), bringing the price down to around $190 for one year.
Now, when I check online, that option is gone. Instead it sends me to a page to submit a request for a quote. With the quote I got from emailing customer service, I’m only seeing the full price of around $240 without any discount. Does anyone know why this is happening or if there’s a way to still get the discount? Any insight would be appreciated!
Hi , my dell g15 laptop's caps lock light is on. But computer dont turn on. How can i open the laptop?
Hello,
Would anyone please recommend what type of RAM this PC needs? I have I7-8700. I tried running the Crucial scanner, but it does not work anymore. I tried Kingston, and it recommends RAM with ECC and without. What do you think?
Thank you
I was wondering if there is a reason I couldn't upgrade my 7750 from a Quadro RTX 5000 (P/N 0GF2K) to a RTX A5000 (P/N NJ5ND), from looking at pictures, they are the same form factor, and all the heat generating components look to be in the same spot and at the same height.
My major concern is that the A5000 has 1 less PCIE connector (as it runs at 8x at gen 4 speeds, compared to x16 at gen 3 for the 5000), and if the 7750 has any BIOS locks to prevent this. The A5000 also has a gold foil over the memory? the RTX 5000 doesn't have this. and the A5000 is 150w vs the 110w of the 5000.
I checked the model number on Amazon for the same one from dell store and the labels seems quite different.
My laptop will not power on at all. I’ve had this issue before when my motherboard and GPU (it’s all one unit in the laptop) overheated. This time though my laptop wasn’t warm at all and just went black on me. I’ve tried holding down the power button and holding down m + power button with the AC plugged in.
Could it be a hardware issue again?
I have the Dell G15 5530 Laptop with the following specs(for ref.)-
Processor - i7 13650HX
GPU - NVIDIA 4060 8GB
RAM - 16GB
I have tried dual booting several times to Ubuntu 22,04 and 24.04 alongside the existing Windows 11.
I have Fast startup off, Secure boot off, Memory integrity check off, Switched to AHCI mode.
BUT every time i dual boot to Ubuntu no matter the version, randomly the cursor and the keyboard (the whole screen) freezes in ubuntu.
The error logs show multiple things - nvidia drm issues, wifi driver(iwlwifi), cpu softlock issues.
I tried reinstalling drivers, changing Nvidia driver versions etc but nothing works, still freezes randomly.
This never happened on windows.
Tried Install alongside windows and also tried manual partitions still the issue is the same.
I can find the solution to this anywhere, Can someone please help me out on this so I can finally Use ubuntu on my laptop!
faulty dc power jack, bought new charger didnt help,
what is strange is that the past 5 days i only have this problem between roughly 10am-12;30pm
what do you guys think, send it to dell for repair, it just makes no sense that the issue seems software related when u think charging would be only hardware, something fishy
Is there a better solution for switching between inputs?
The monitor and KVM features are excellent. The problem is the software for swtiching between devices. I have 2 Macs, one Windows and one Nvidia Jetson connected. Only the Win software can, without issue, let me use hot keys to switch between inputs. Both Macs have the same issue; you must constantly select 'refresh' on the Display/Peripheral Manager and even then it rarely works. To switch I must reach to the back of the monitor and use the one button stick to navigate between inputs.
I would love to hear others solutions or experience with this. It would be great to have a mini 4 key keyboard that let you just push a button and switch.
I have done virtually everything I can find online to try to fix this I have reset the monitor factory settings multiple times I've unplugged it I've tried a different HDMI cord and I've downloaded the proper things for Windows and even when I adjust Windows to display like bright red and the color settings thing and in the advanced settings however the hell you get to it I went there and when I turn everything up to make the screen basically bright red which is not what you want but it still doesn't display red which makes me believe it's the monitor.
It was perfectly fine and I went in to the HDR settings and tried a couple different ones and then also went into the different options for your screen like Vivid or gaming one or sports or whatever and what I was trying to do initially was dark colors when I'm watching HBO through the browser were blocky. Somewhere along the line all the red colors on the screen have now turned pink and I have done the factory reset and reset every single thing that allows me to reset something within the monitor.
I've also went into color Management in Windows and downloaded the most current ICM file from Dell and I've tried every one of that ICC or ICM files that I have and it still stays pink and I don't get if I reset the factory reset on the monitor that would mean all the settings that I did change on the monitor when I was messing around with stuff would have went back to normal and now I don't know where to look to fix this because it definitely had to do with me making adjustments but I've went back to all the programs I made adjustments to and set them back to factory and I don't get why it won't come back with the red colors I'm about to just toss them Monitor and buy a new one because I can't seem to fix it I've been working on it now for 2 hours and haven't made shit worth of progress. I am extremely frustrated with this
If you are thinking about financing a purchase on Dell Credit, be aware that Bread Financial (Comenity) is massively increasing the interest rate APR from 23% to 35%. This also applies if you go beyond the no interest period...
Hello there,
I am running a Dell 3070 micro, which suddenly turned off during usage and since then won't power on again. I then noticed that the LED on the external power supply turns off and stays off as soon as I plug it into the OptiPlex.
To narrow down the issue, I got a second power supply from a different brand, but the behavior stays the same: the LED on it turns off or flickers as soon as I plug it into the OptiPlex. I then also removed the RAM, CPU, and SSD, but the same behavior persisted.
Is there any way to rescue it (e.g., through the jumpers by a ROM recovery), or is the motherboard simply toast/shorted?
Thanks!
Hi all!
I have a small USB hub, where I connect different USB devices (mouse, keyboard), an ethernet cable, and the HDMI. A single USB-C cable goes out of this USB hub, and I connect this single cable to my notebook.
With my past notebook, a Latitude 3410, this worked like a charm.
This week, I got a new notebook at work, a Latitude 3450. When I connect it to the exact same USB hub, all it does is recognize the HDMI and nothing else. It does correctly extend the screen to my bigger monitor, but it does not recognize the ethernet cable nor the USB devices.
I have tested directly connecting the ethernet cable and the USB devices to the notebook, and when I do it like that it all works fine. But when I connect it through the HUB, the issue arises.
I hope my description of the issue is clear enough. Any idea what could be the problem here?
Thanks in advance!
I want to make use of my Quadro GPUs, I have Quadro K4200 4GB, and Quadro P620 2GB, is it possible to use them simultaneously while also using all the VRAM in the VMware? I want to use them both on xeon e5-2680v4 64gb ddr4, with a 425w psu
pls help, we replaced hdd to sdd back then to fix this problem but it happened again today. i tried diagnostics and it had a problem with lcd cables. could that be the cause of the boot loop or something different? im not a techy person so pls bear with me. ive already tried the F12 and F2 fix but they don't work. what should i do next? thanks to whoever responds 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’ve been looking at purchasing a Dell S3422DWG monitor for a while now, however Dell has increased the price multiple times over the last few months.
It was $429 Australian dollarydoos when I looked at it in November, however in December they increased the price to $469 and then just this week increased it again to $540.
Why are they arbitrarily increasing the price and is there any chance of it going back down again soon?
I’ve looked through the service manual, there is no 4 amber, 1 white error light pattern. This happens frequently and tanks performance a lot. My laptop has also been shutting down by itself a bit, but I assume that’s a heat issue as I’m in Australian summer. If anyone knows how I could fix the error, please help
