Why is it only the English audio of a show that keeps foreign languages in it?

I've noticed this on a bunch of shows. The characters mostly speak English, but maybe there's some guys that speak Spanish or Mandarin or something else. In the English audio you hear those languages and have to read the subtitles.

But if you switch to any other language like French or German then EVERYONE is speaking French or German. I'm sure you lose out on something by not getting to understand the words and having to read the subtitles instead, but then wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper for the dub to leave the other language alone since you're not meant to understand it anyway and only translate the English?

Very bad video quality after adverts

Hi all,

This post relates to UK Standard With Ads plan. I'm sorry if I missed it I couldn't see a tag / flair for UK

Just wondering if this issue is only happening with me - whenever I receive an advert, after my movie or show resumes, the quality is so shockingly bad, like pixelated. I know the easiest thing would be to return to the Netflix home screen and resume the movie / show, but whenever I do that, I seemingly hit another advert a few seconds in and then the same issue happens

Is anyone aware of any fixes for this?

Netflix support couldn't help me as the issue still exists after going through troubleshooting steps which is why I'm asking here. Their only solution was to upgrade to an ad-free plan but I don't want to pay more than £4.99 per month, my current financial situation isn't really welcoming that right now

Thanks in advance

Netflix subtitle game is horrendous

It’s frustrating enough that I have to pause movies and turn on subtitles for parts that were subtitled at release. But to completely cut subtitles out of the movie completely (I’m talking kill bill vol.2 chapter 8. 20 min of the movie was completely unwatchable as a result) even with them turned on is next level disdain for their customers.

English subtitles on Netflix?

Hi, just a question. Is it possible to get English subtitles for an English show on Netflix? Asking as i can understand written English better than spoken English. This would be on Estonian Netflix

Shows based on real events like Mindhunters and Chernobyl that dont get too much into drama or trying to shock the viewer

I've rewatched both of these series at least 5 times, and I'm looking for more similar to them. I liked how they didn't get too much into dramatization, at least when focusing on the original subjects like interviewing the serial killers and how the incident occured. I feel like too many docuseries about morbid subjects try to go for shock, rather than focusing on the facts, and end up sounding ridiculous and edgy like some youtube video

Ragnarok

How many people here have been following this Norwegian series from the beginning? I almost forgot that season 3 has already aired. Watching it now in Dolby Vision while waiting for my summer blanket to dry so I can go to sleep. I really love this series. Shame this is supposedly the final season. I wonder if they’ll release it into 4k Blu-ray?

Do you need to create an account before or after accepting an extra member invitation?

Title says it. I want to setup my mom as an extra member and I'm heading to her place today to setup it up. I have setup the link, but I don't know if she can accept it without an account. We tried to setup it up for my dad but it wouldn't let him accept on the account he normally uses and we ended up giving up. There are a ton of videos on how to invite extra members but no info on what the extra members have to do on their end.

The Tearmaster on Netflix

SPOILER ALERTSPOILER ALERT**

Ok. So I just finished watching this Italian movie….my goodness. But there was one part I was confused and am looking for someone to enlighten me on what exactly the purpose of it was. So she wears bandages on her fingers throughout the film; until the end of the court hearing against that bitch Margaret. She then races out of the courthouse ripping the bandages off her fingers in the process. Can someone explain the bandages to me? Why does she wear them? I could see the symbolism of her being free from her abuser being represented by the bandages.

Netflix iPhone app feature disappeared?

I used to be able to watch a Netflix show and minimize the screen on my phone while I continued doing other stuff, but at some point (maybe a few months ago?) that disappeared, and now if I try to minimize the screen it just pauses whatever I’m watching and closes it … am I doing something stupid?

Video quality problem

Hey everyone. I'm streaming the office on Netflix through an Xbox series x. There seems to be a really annoying problem where darker areas or even background and clothes are almost constantly flickering. Is there a way to fix?

My impressions of Ripley(2024)

I'm on the last episode and I have mixed feelings regarding the necessity of this limited series. The format can have Its benefits and expend upon the murder sequences for instance, giving a more realistic perspective to Tom's modus operandi and how he covered his tracks. But It's not always working in favor of the suspense nor the viewers attention span.

To begin with, the Netflix show had a few subplots that felt like filler (The mafia guy, the bank fraud or the cat who left blood stains on the stairs...just to name a few). Though the long episodes did expend in details the key moments of the story...they had a tendency to drag the pace. The investigation parts had a good rythme at first but became tedious and repetitive. In contrast, the 1999 adaptation condensed the plot brilliantly in 2 hours, keeping the tension tight from beginning to end.

Character arcs have been slightly improved with Tom, Marge or the inspector but butchered with Freddy. For instance, Tom's jealousy with Freddy/Dickie's friendship is absent here, which resulted in a watered down confrontation later on imo. Speaking of Freddy, there were some odd casting choices: Eliot Sumner... wasn't great. They appeared as menacing as a banana peel in the sand. Dakota Fanning as Marge was dull and apathetic. Andrew Scott's Tom could be captivating at times but one note in his delivery ( he's also too old to play a convincing character in his 30's).

The dynamic between the cast was off, they lacked chemistry on screen. Marge, Dickie and Freddy felt like people who barely knew each other. Overall the performances were a mix bag, the actors probably needed better direction or a few more takes.

On the positive side I liked how the show mirrored Caravaggio's life with Tom's, the symbolism and references to classical painting. It's very well shot, the monochromatic palette and set designs were commendable and effective in conveying the 60's aesthetic. It felt expensive and the Hitchcockian vibes were spot-on. I liked how the show did Its own thing and portrayed Tom's cunning and deceiving personality in a more sinister approach.

For me, the biggest difficulty Ripley has is to co-exist with the other adaptations and that's partly how It failed to keep the formula interesting, especially when the aura of the 1999 version remains so vibrant and overshadowing in every way. It's a good addition to the Netflix catalog but unfortunately not as spellbinding as some may say.

*On a side note, I missed my favourite character Peter, even though I knew he wouldn't appear here since he's not in the book.

What did you guys think of the show?

What are some alternative ways to purchase Netflix services?

Sadly as of yesterday our Netflix shut down :( :(. My sister has been paying for it and she said she hasn't used it in months. So I responded with ok, here's some cash to get it up and running and I'll start paying for it. She wasn't budging.

I have enough for the first month. If I remember correctly I was at a grocery store and looked at their gift card rack. There was a Netflix gift card that said $0-$100. I'm assuming it's like a debit/credit card except naturally only able to be used for Netflix. I hope that's the case!

Thank you for your time and patience, have a good one!

Parasyte: The Gray is very good

I've been hesitantly excited for this one for a while. I love the original anime to death, it's probably in my top three favorite shows of all time and this live action really nails it.

First of all, if you've seen the anime, don't go into this one expecting a retelling of Shinichi and Migi's story. While this adaptation has a lot of the same themes and general story beats, it's far from a 1 to 1 remake, nor does it try to be. Instead, it's showing us what happened in South Korea at roughly the same time as the original show. It still has a lot of the same themes and existential questions about humanity that were so prevalent and enticing in the anime. If you are unaware of the anime at all, the basic premise is that alien parasites come to earth and start body snatching humans. They destroy the original human consciousness when doing so. The main character is only partially infected by his parasite and so they have to work together for their mutual survival. This show has a similar thing going on, though the main character is infected with her parasite in a different way in the anime (it was in his hand there.)

The characters are all a lot of fun. The main detective dude is my favorite and the crazy lady who leads the Grays is both hilarious and terrifying. Sorry I'm horrible with names. Su-in, the main character is also really good. Her story is heartbreaking and you really feel for her throughout the show. The actress playing her does a great job playing her roles (you'll see what I mean.)

The CGI though is really where this show shines. If you are a fan of horror, particularly body horror, this show fucking hits the beats. The way the parasytes move and warp their host is horrific and unsettling. There's one scene on a bridge, and I won't spoil too much but it seriously highlights how terrifying these things actually are. There's gore and it's really well done imo. It's not gory for the sake of gory, more realistic I guess I would say.

I've been watching the dubbed version which is serviceable, but its probably better in the original audio. The original show asks a lot of questions about humanity and it's impact on this Earth. It does a great job at asking you to reflect on your place in the world and how you treat the environment and people around you. I think this adaptation really translates that well. Forreal y'all, check this one out. It's pretty darn good.

Netflix reminders

I seem to remember being able to do this before but maybe it was just a weird fever dream.

There was a page on Netflix where you could see a list of all shows/movies that you had marked as reminders of when they released.

Is that feature still available, on TV or mobile Netflix?

Just finished watching The Antisocial Network, any recommendations for similar docs?

I really enjoyed this doc as well as others like the social network, tinder swindler etc. I feel like I've watched most of those available on Netflix but are there others like true crime or about social media you'd recommend? Could be on other streaming platforms or YouTube.

TIA!

ETA: i got the social network mixed up with another documentary (the social dilemma), so I didn't mean the movie, apologies!

Physical:100 [US]

Anyone else think that show was a HUGE waste of time. Interesting (a little) from the cultural point of view but WOW, who paced that dumpster fire. The games are just plain stupid, the pacing is terrible, and lets be honest, if you're not Korean, calling the teams by their team leaders name makes it next to impossible to tell who's who (here's a clue - use TEAM COLORS). I can't believe there are two seasons to this.

Extraction 1 Villain

I just finished watching Extraction 1, i absolutely love the movie, but my question is: how the hell was the main big bad villain killed so easily? How did she get past all the guards? How did she sneak a gun in a party where he would be without being frisked? Why was he killed without a fight going down? Was there a reason as to why his death is so unsatisfying? I don't know if this answered in part 2 since i have yet to see it, thanks in advance

Scoop: My thoughts as an ex employee of BBC

  1. A few versions of a plan to modernise the BBC logo was trialed around end of 2019, but not in the way portrayed in the film, so it blurs continuity. The current logo wasn't adopted until 2021.

  2. The dog was a significant dig / factual representation, I hadn't personally witnessed it but its widely known that presenters are given liberties, such as in the code of conduct. This includes staff like Sam, who could come into the office after a liquid lunch and not face a disciplinary, had it been anyone else it would be a different story.

  3. Coronavirus saved the BBC from an iceberg and potentially added 10 years to its lifespan as a licence funded broadcaster. They received a lot of backlash from accountable figures due to the interview, which partly contributed to Sam's decision to leave the company.

  4. The reason that the Queen's staffman recorded the interview was apparently to ensure the broadcast version was not edited and cut for sensational or misleading purposes. Newsnight is a rare breed in that it doesn't adopt this practice, but it shows the institution of television and British novelty is not trusted by the institution of the monarchy.

In regards to the film, I thought it was very well executed and despite my reservations about the vocals of Gillian Anderson, you can't cast a mirror. Billie Piper did fantastic as always and her accent is softened, almost looking and sounding like her Doctor Who character Rose Tyler.

Give me Netflix original movies that you love.

What are some movies produced by Netflix that are genuinely good? Most of what I’ve watched from them haven’t been the best and everywhere I’ve read has the same opinion.

Ripley is so painful to watch

I loved the movie and the books. I love slow burns. But not this. The show just feels so hollow. I don't think any of the actors are compelling to watch.

Ripley has one facial expression which is almost comical since all the characters aren't put off by it. Dakota Fanning sounds like she's reciting her lines not acting.

For a man who makes a life as a con man, Ripley isn't very bright or good at it. He almost slips the real story about being hired by the father in E1. He doesn't hide the mail he's secretly reading or steam it in privacy and the maid sees everything. He brings in the mafia pissing off Greenleaf which shows horrible judgement and lack of caution.

The shots are beautiful but don't convey interesting information. There's so much silence without suspense or urgency. So many shots of stairs.

I love a slow burn but there's no burn here.

Queen of Tears - Can anyone please confirm if this is available on Netflix Ads tier in the US?

If anyone knows of a way to confirm what content is and isn't on the ads tier more generally, that would be great. I did a lot of googling and failed to find a definitive, up to date list unless you are already subscribed to Netflix ads tier so can see the lock symbol on content you can't access.

The Florida Project is pretty boring

I hear many people on TikTok talking about how the movie is sooo good. but for me, I was so confused on what the movie is about. The plot was just all over the place, and it’s was just basically kids running all over the place causing trouble. Probably the movie isn’t my cup of tea.
