Three times I’ve been stopped riding my bike. Two of those times the police pretty much forced me off the road with their squad car.
I have an easy out so we didn’t conversate long. But be careful out there. All three times I was obeying traffic rules, in the street going with traffic.
New commissioner might be doing quality of life arrests and ticketing
Just barely reading the news, but it seems as if tariffs is the new thing on the block. If gas gets more expensive (above 5 dollars), we might see a bigger effect than even congestion pricing has.
TBH people using the bike lane to momentarily stop doesn’t drive me up a a wall. I just found it rich that a bus driver decided to momentarily stop in one as pictured. Especially when their drivers and the agency themselves are so big on others staying out of bus lanes. I’ve had drivers dangerously overtake me while I was in the bus lane & then they have no concern about how reckless their behavior is.
Early 90s bonkers comedy with Rosanna Arquette playing Lucy, a waitress/escape artist and David Bowie as a bartender.
Long story short, Lucy and her best bud Vivienne biking around NYC early 90s. I highly recommend it. Currently on Criterion Channel.
Hi all, I’m a bit confused on how to turn at certain intersections. For example, if there a left side running bike lane and I need to turn right on to a street, do I have to merge into traffic or should I pull into the bike lane on the new street and wait for the light to turn green the other way (so I’m essentially making a two point turn). Same with vice versa.
OK, I'm about ready to buy a bike, tell me what I should get?
Requirements:
I was thinking a long-tail cargo bike. Not sure though, I've never ridden one.
Hi All, can anyone tell me the status of the East River Greenway below Stuytown? is there a direct path to FiDi? or is it still broken? Last time I tried, the path ended in Houston. Not sure if there is a workaround there to continue south.
I just started a year off work and love using the citibikes here in NYC for the past 10 years. I would love to start taking longer trips to explore the city now that I am not working. But the second day after I moved to NYC 20 years ago, I locked my $400 trek bike with a gorilla U lock to go into a store for 3 minutes and when I returned the bike was stolen. I used that bike for 3 years in Boston without problems.
Is a lighter bike then citibike that I can use for more that 30 minutes worth it in NYC?
Thank you!
Must have been put up overnight or this morning. Love the use of this space. Prevents parking and helps day lighting
I was doored, but got drivers info before he fled the scene. Filed a no fault property and medical claim (needed xray, thankfully okay).
Just learned his insurance approved 80% refund. Don't have an attorney. No footage. NYPD unhelpful.
Any advice on how to get the remaining 20% in out of pocket expenses?
EDIT: 80% of *property damage* - driver claimed his door was already open 12" when I hit him. I saw him look at me in his side mirror before he opened the door and hit the side of my bike; first thing he said to me was that I "should have been going faster." Property damage is around $500 so very unlikely worth it to hire a lawyer. I did speak with Steve Vaccaro and he was super helpful.
Got a letter taped to my bike this afternoon that says no Ebikes are allowed in the bike storage room due to city regulations. Anyone else had this? I’m prepared to raise hell.
Some additional context is my company owns the entire building (very big) and my e-bike has UL certification.
Appreciate any help here!
Just got home and typing this. I was biking east on myrtle ave in downtown bk tonight, between Flatbush and Navy, at around 715pm this evening on my home commute. No cars ahead of me, and a car maybe 100 feet behind me. There is a sprinter van double parked in the bike lane ahead. I look over my left shoulder, move into the traffic lane for about 5 seconds before passing the van and returning to the bike lane. I didn't think it was at all an aggressive or unsafe maneuver, I'm usually pretty cautious but like to ride fast and will definitely move into traffic if I think it's safe.
So of course when I am waiting at the light a guy pulls up in a black mini van - the dude who I pulled in front of - and he opens his passenger window, saying in a not so nice tone - "you're not a car" - I can tell this guy is not in a good mood, so I continue looking straight ahead and inch forward into the crosswalk to get some distance from the guy while waiting for the red light. Of course minivan pulls up right next to me, says "you're not a car ****, what happens if I hit you, then what?" I don't react, stay looking straight ahead. Totally frozen. Adrenaline is definitely up there. After a moment of me saying nothing, he says "Stay in the bike lane" and I give him two slow nods, still not looking at him. I sit there for a few seconds, not daring to look over in fear that the guy is pulling out a fucking gun to shoot me with. Light turns green and I let him pass.
Look I wish I had thicker skin but ugh just wanting to vent with yall and very tired of feeling like people want to kill me while riding my bike. For reference I'm a 5'8 male, lived in NYC for 1.5 years and biking to work in Fidi for the past year, not an aggressive bone in my body but I've definitely had a few experiences of people being aggressive while riding the bike (and the subway). There's definitely a part of me that wants to engage but I feel like it's a death wish most of the time. But tired of not standing up for myself man. Fucking hell man this city bums me out sometimes. Makes me want to not ride and not even live here, fuck. /rant
Hi everyone,
Here are the email addresses of all the council members on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which is overseeing Intro 1138 (the Universal Daylighting bill). Plus, I’ve included Miser’s current target council members for outreach.
What can you do?
Send a quick email to these council members (you can even BCC them all in one go!) and let them know why you support Intro 1138. Share your personal story or just express why you think daylighting will make NYC safer for everyone.
Emails for Committee Members and Targets:

Why support Intro 1138?
Daylighting is a simple and effective way to make intersections safer by clearing sightlines at crosswalks. This bill will save lives, especially for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, while also helping emergency vehicles respond faster.
Let’s come together to make NYC streets safer for everyone! Thank you for taking a few minutes to send an email and help push this bill forward.
I'm looking to purchase my first bike this spring! For quick context, I used citi bikes last spring and summer as my main mode of exercise (I was going on 45 - 60min bike rides 4 times a week) and I grew to really love biking as a hobby. So, naturally I want my own.
Any good bike shops in northern brooklyn that has a great selection and quality service?
Thanks!
EDIT: appreciate all of the recs!!
Hoping to find someone who recently unpacked their trainer and still has the box. I'm moving and want to pack mine securely. Lmk, thanks!
Hi folks, I'm visiting NYC from London on the 1st of May with my 15 year old son to ride the 5BBT. We cycle regularly and do 60-70km together every Saturday and wanted some ideas on 100km rides to do when we're in NYC ahead of the bike tour. I was thinking of cycling up the HRG, starting at Lower Manhattan, and then catching the Empire State Trail till we hit 100km and then catching a train back to Manhattan?
However, I'm open to other suggestions too and also need suggestions for 60k'ish rides for the other days we are in NYC. Our plan is to ride everyday. We've done the main sights on a previous visit.
