Help Converting to Drop Bars | Bianchi Nero SS

Hey NYC 🤞 I'm super new to the cycling world.

I was lucky enough to buy a brand new Bianchi Pista Nero SS from someone who was gifted it but never used it. I've been using this bike nearly everyday now to commute.

Only downside is that the bike comes with flat bars and i'm entirely unsure how to convert this ride to some drop bars. I think it's worth noting that i'm okay with just one current break and its not a priority of mine to convert to break levers (unless that's what you guys recommend???)

Any pointers would greatly help and thanks in advance !!!

Map of NYC Garages which (claim) to accept bicycles

I had a pretty frustrating time yesterday trying to find a garage that would take my money to let me park it in their facility.

Based on Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Legally Operating Businesses dataset, I've created a RWGP map of garages where their license info says they have parking for bikes.

NYC Parking Garages with Bicycle Spaces · Ride with GPS

At minimum, this can be used on route to find a garage when needed.

And possibly we can crowdsource data on how real this is.
The link in each POI is to a form to collect community data - to see if the garage actually accepts bicycles.

Favorite routes in Harriman? First time riding there yesterday and I definitely picked the wrong route.

Picked a random route off Ride with GPS and it had a horrible section along highway 17. I’m not from New York so I always just roll the dice with routes I pick and this sucked. Obviously the Harriman roads were awesome and I did cut through some pretty neighborhoods but Christ I thought I was going to get mowed over on 17

Safest Route UES to Fidi

I’d like to bike back and forth to work, but the streets seem so chaotic and dangerous. Are there any routes UES to Fidi that are relatively calm and easy rides?

Forest Park to Cunningham Park

Does anyone have a map that takes you from Forest Park to Cunningham through paved roads but only inside greenways? A short detour into streets would be fine, but at least on the map, the only non park roadway I see is from Forest Park to the South entrance of Flushing meadows. From there it looks like I can go to Kissena Park to Kissena Corridor to Cunningham.

Grey citibike users

Anyone else feel like grey citi bike users over estimate how fast they are and by nature of that overestimating they are often bad riders?

Idk about y’all but I pass those things often (which I find pretty cool about my riding ability)

But for some reason they seem to take it personal/it seems like they think they should be the bike in the front like how a car will try not to let you pass. It’s weird.

The other week this one dude took it so personal he started racing me and I love a challenge so I kept making him chase me and chasing when he passed me but I got to this set of blocks behind Home Depot along Willoughby that have sketchy stops and driving and slowed my roll while he sped ahead, but the guy on the grey citibike was so adamant about keeping that lead he damn near got pancaked by one of those monstrous SUVs you see in the orthodox neighborhoods.

Edit: uhh.. sorry for saying I think it’s cool I could pass a battery powered machine or pedal assisted bike etc. Will def refrain from that talk on here, seems to have bothered ppl and developed the incorrect narrative around a largely observational and concerned post about the realities of bike culture. I know being made part of a competition you don’t want to be a part can feel invasive and demeaning.

My speed is typically 20km/h but I don’t think I’m a slow biker (13 mph). How do I get faster?

I only really get to 20-23 mph downhill. I have a specialized sirrus X 3.0. I wonder if a road bike makes a significant difference?

Anyone interested in a trade for my Trek hybrid?

Looking for more solidly road bike/speed demon. The trek is in fine condition, chain's a little rusty and needs a tune up otherwise great.

Central Park Laps and Hudson River Greenway

Hi there,

I’m moving to the city in the near future and just wanted to follow up on doing laps in Central Park and riding the greenway for training purposes. I’ve seen some comments and searched around here, so I don’t mean to be breaking any rules, just want to see if I can get a more updated answer.

I’m aware of better cycling north of the city, but given my work schedule, most of my cycling will have to be in Manhattan. For those who do laps in Central Park, is it really that difficult to navigate with tourists/pedestrians? I’m not out to set land speed records, more so to just build up endurance. Videos I’ve seen make it seem like it’s not terrible to do laps at a good pace.

As for the Greenway, I imagine down near FiDi and the battery is rough, but how does the pedestrian volume fare above 60th or so?

Thanks in advance!

I had to go off on two people this week for locking their bike to mines

It's really weird how this happened simultaneously too and both by the same type of idiots. The first one really got me mad because it was just pure laziness, not using your brain and reckless altogether. Where the guy had locked his literal u-lock to my frame. When the complete other side was free and there were other poles around the area.

The second guy, I had caught him just before he was about to wrap his lock around and press his dirty ass e-bike against mines. And I had to yell and tell him stop, don't do that. Like this isn't what you do in NYC, you have to respect other people's property.

Just because you lock your e-bikes up together with your other friends. Doesn't mean that shit applies to other people's bikes. I had to tell the first guy something crazy. Where like if you did this to the wrong person, you would probably get fucked up or even stabbed. And since most these guys don't speak English, I don't think it even got to his brain unfortunately.

Because they all do the same shit when they do something wrong. Which is just say "sorry sorry, brother". Like you're saying that but it's not getting to your head. If you would of locked up your bike and went on the train and went home, then now what? That isn't no sorry situation, you're literally putting people's life and time on hold. Due to your selfishness and reckless behavior.

We encounter a lot of wild stuff on the regular as bikers in NYC. But for the most part these days, I'm a more calmer and more restrained person. Where I've grown and know not to yell or overreact. But that's one situation where I really wanted to punch someone in the face. Because I think that's only way, they'll remember and know to never do that again. Luckily I operate on common sense and logic.

Good lunch pit stops in Hudson Valley

Planning a Century ride from the city to Hudson Valley (out and back). Turn around point is pretty flexible and could be on either side of the river. Anyone have a lunch pit stop recommendation anywhere between Tarrytown and Beacon?

Glad I was on a eBike. I saved this baby rabbit on the crazy highway.

I was ridding on the belt parkway in bike lane going to Brighton beech while from the corner of my eye I saw this rabbit stranded by the divider's. Only way I was able to see him is this part of the bike lane was right up on the highway edge. If any of you guys know, most of the bike lanes are pretty far off the highway. After I got to him he I picked him up very easily. He was very tired and dehydrated.

Getting to Long Island

I am planning on a longer ride to visit my friends in Middle Island and I am not familiar with the roads in LI. First off, is it safe enough? I ride in traffic in the city often and am "comfortable" with cars and tight spaces but I haven't ridden on roads that are above 35mph. Second of all, which roads would you suggest to look at? I am on a road bike and would prefer to stick to pavement. Any suggestion you might have will be appreciated.

Looking for a Hill Climbing bike?

I'm selling an ultra-light, low-geared bike I built for Mt. Washington road race last year. It's yours for ~$1400 depending on wheel, saddle, and pedal combo. I would also consider renting the bike to someone doing a hill climb race. Please see FB listing here: https://www.facebook.com/commerce/listing/318471081111848?media_id=0&ref=share_attachment

Bikes on Metro North

How strict are the conductors on Metro North when it comes to bikes? I’m planning on traveling from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central with a bike on Sunday afternoon, and looking at the MTA app I see that every single train has a little “no bikes” symbol. Do I have any chance of making it onto a train with my bike?

Got hit by a bus on my way to work. What do I do?

I have an Aventon pedal assist ebike and ride to and from work every day. Today I was on Throop crossing Myrtle and a school bus turned left and bonked me. I fell down on my left side HARD—thankfully my head was fine. I got the bus driver's cell and took a picture of his ID. I didn't want to call the cops because there was just a bus load of children waiting to go to school. I was able to ride the bike home but the bike is pretty messed up, with the throttle not working at all and the gears pretty wonky (not a bike expert lol).

When I got home I called him to get his insurance and he was like "I'm still driving, can I call you back in ten minutes?" and he obviously never did. By then I had to go to the doctors appointment which I was thankfully able to schedule while I was still at the scene.

I went to the doctor and he was kind of weird! I told him what happened and he was like "well, no harm no foul, he was probably more scared than you" and I was like "well can we take x-rays?" and he was like "I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe if it gets worse. Let's not ruin this bus driver's life over it." ??? So we have a follow up in a week but in the meantime my arm is fucked up!

I tried calling again, with no answer. My bike is insured via renter's insurance with Lemonade, so—and I don't know if this was the right move at all—I filed a claim with them. It says "Liability"? Is that correct? Should I not have filed the claim? The bike definitely needs repairs but it's not totaled so I'm worried I just shot myself in the food over this.

I'm sorry for this wall of text I'm just freaking out and worried my arm is going to become a serious thing. I got doored 9 years ago and my leg was fucked up for a year but I didn't have insurance and never said anything to the person who doored me and I just don't want that to happen again.

Of course when it fell off the nearby docks were full

Kinda on me, I noticed the bike was acting a little weird but was on my way to a meeting so I figured I'd stick it out. I had to walk the bike at least a half mile and go to a second dock to drop it off. I'm going to see if I could get at least some of my time refunded, not sure if anyone has been able to do that before!

Williamsburg to Columbus Circle and back

Thinking about commuting. What is safest path to/from Williamsburg/Columbus Circle? Google maps shows Hudson Greenway->Horatio ->Hudson/Bleecker->2nd. Don't love doing Hudson to Bleecker. What is cutting across on 20th or 26th to 2nd Ave like?

And the other direction 1st->13th->8th Ave. Hate 8th. Would rather take 6th. Is it better to try to make it all the way to the Hudson Greenway?

Welcome to Chaotic Cycling Season 2024

It’s finally that time of the year, the near entirety of the resident population has their good weather blinders on and are so dumbstruck by rediscovering their spring joy, they get themselves into all sorts of messy situations. Be careful out there cyclists!

My evening ride in Brooklyn last night was one of the most harrowing I’ve had in a very long time, it felt like biking on the first really nice Friday of the year.

Yielding to jaywalkers

This was brought up in another post but it wasn't clarified to my satisfaction. If a pedestrian crosses the street at a designated crossing point AGAINST THEIR OWN SIGNAL (aka jaywalks) even though I have a clear signal in my favor (aka green light) am I supposed to yield them? I commonly just serve around these....I'll be polite...folks. As jaywalkers they do not have ROW IMO so if they think I'm "buzzing" them or whatever I don't care, but should I? At least as a strict matter of law?
