Interesting article I just saw posted on the Cal Bearinsider forum regarding a course taught to prepare athletes about financial planning considerations when one becomes a pro. (Seems that now, one could add managing NIL money to the equation too).
Shortly before Layshia Clarendon, BA 13 (American studies), was drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the Cal senior attended a pre-draft orientation. Clarendon raised a hand and inquired about matching 401(k)s. The people fielding questions were floored. They weren’t used to college students knowing what a 401(k) was, let alone being savvy enough to ask about matching contributions.
“I remember going to that meeting and thinking, ‘Oh, wow, I already know some of this,’” Clarendon recalls. When it came to financial literacy, Clarendon was miles ahead of most of their peers—all thanks to an independent study course they’d taken with Haas professional faculty member Stephen Etter, BS 83, MBA 89, called Financial & Business Literacy for the Professional Athlete.
For more than 20 years, Etter has helped scores of UC Berkeley athletes prepare for the financial realities of turning pro. Everyone from football great Marshawn Lynch and quarterback Jared Goff to Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin and golf phenom Collin Morikawa, BS 19, have learned about navigating contracts, choosing advisors, investing, and more for their post-Berkeley lives.
From tonight’s premiere of the first episode of the new ESPN+ docuseries Full Court Press. Holly leading a discussion with Kamilla, Kiki and Caitlin and the film’s director Kristen Lappas. So fun and so inspiring! And so humanizing to get to see the athletes outside of a press conference.
Also they’ve got a little showcase of the Indiana at Iowa 2023 game in the episode and there was definitely a collective groan from the crowd lol. That was such a tough loss.

Interested if this is true seeing as I thought there were no roster spots remaining on Iowa’s team
Janiah Barker in theory is the perfect player...She's 6'4 athletic, mobile, and can shoot. There's not a single person that should be able to guard her. And she should be a DPOY candidate. But she's barely an above average player. She's way too gifted for this. I hope she turns it in around her next 2 years.
Looking at way-too-early projections & it seems this might be the year, the lady Vols empire misses an NCAA tourney. SEC will be stronger & LSU, South Carolina have already added more talent to their power rosters.
I mean championship/Caitlin Clark memes aside here it’s weird:
-Everyone wants to duck them in OOC
-got nowhere near the amount of publicity as CC/Iowa despite being statistically better in nearly every category (including losing only 3 games in 3 years)
-No major discussion of the team on this sub.
edit Furthermore, I wanted to edit this one and put it in but I’ll say that you can’t say “x player is changing the way the game is played” despite players on the SC are just are either dominant or playing above their competition. I can’t help but think there’s something wrong here beyond just clicks and view bait
My collection grows.
