Why is it “Il sent” and not “Il sentit” if “sentir” is an -ir verb?
For example: “finir” is “il finit” and not “il fin”
Is it just irregular?
hello there, i made a post before and created a small discord server.
we chat, share our days, post random questions and recently started to write short stories/essays too.
we have a few of native speakers there to help us too.
i am looking for 5 more people to include, anyone over A1 is welcome.
please reach out only if you are a talkative person/ who is going to be active in the group. otherwise we ban passive participants.
you can reach out via dm with a little introduction.
thank you!
For example, I came across this sentence; "je souhaite ne pas en aimer," which I think means, 'I wish I didn't like them.'
I would have written it as, "Je souhaite que je n'en aime pas." Would that be correct? Maybe it just sounds clunky? I'm so confused about this construction, when it should be used and why.
Hello All,
I have two related issues here. Firstly, even for the same content, streaming services provide different audio and subs depending on your location, so it's hard to find anything.
Secondly even if you do find content (in your country) for your chosen series that has French audio and subs, there's a chance that the subs won't match the audio exactly because it's not 'CC'.
I'm at the stage where I really need to bump up my listening skills and just tune my ear to hearing spoken french regularly. Due to my learning style, audio only (podcasts) won't cut it so I need video and it's quite important that I can view subtitles.
Can anyone recommend a series or children's series (for simpler language) that is available on Amazon Prime or Netflix where there are is French audio and French Subs 'CC'?
I was actually enjoying the animated childrens series 'Llama Llama' on netflix but as I said, the subs wouldnt always match up.
Anyone else having the same problem? Thanks.
Hi how are you? I'm french and I would like to practice my english. I'm looking for a friend to chat with and if you want I can help you with french. 😊
I bought a 2 year plan that I no longer use and am looking to transfer it over to anyone willing to take it; plan runs until june 2025; for 30CAD a month (I got it on discount.)
Please let me know, and I can cc you to frantastique support and transfer over the subscription.
As the title says, I'd love to hear your recommendations.
I personally like
- Cyprien (Youtube & Apple skechtes are fully subbed, not sure about the rest)
- Mr V (Les Jones video is fully subbed)
- Golden Moustache Suricate (all their videos are subbed as far as I can tell)
Please list your favorites french content creators down below, it really helps o/
Highly recommend to anyone who’s looking for something new to watch. Medieval high fantasies are great for exposing you to vocab that’ll help you consume history in French as well.
That’s all, just wanted to share a gem I found. Happy French learning everyone!!

I am going to appear for TEF Canada exam next month. I am struggling a bit with speaking and was wondering if anyone here has attempted the TEF Canada exam this year? If you have/or know someone who did, could you please share your experience with the speaking test?
What were the questions asked for section A and section B and was prep time given to you?
Thankyou!
Bonjour
So I'm on French A1 I guess ;( and have currently got a Family plan on Duo and a Kwizlabs, and I go to French lessons 2/3 times a week, but could do with another app which has daily structured learning. Oh! I also live in France so it's easy enough for me to speak to the native locals and practice, but they don't always want to the crazy sentences Duo has at times.. haha!
Would welcome any suggestions for apps that you've found most useful, engaging, fun and with good explanation. Which duo severely lacks, but it's a very good place to start!
Merci beaucoup for anyone taking the time to reply, much appreciated.
Does anyone have recommendations for podcasts with comprehension quizzes at the end? I'm at a B1 level. I listen to a lot of podcasts right now but sometimes I drift off and I'm not sure I learned much. I prefer the idea of something more interactive but still hands-free as I move about by day.
This was a sentence I came across on kwiziq:
Allez, monte dans la voiture!
Come on, get in the car!
Why isn't "monter" not transformed to the imperative conjugated to "vous"? Clearly the subject is "vous" given the use of "allez", but "monter" is conjugated to the subject "tu" to result in "monte"?
Why didn't they say "Allez, montez dans la voiture!". Shouldn't the subject be kept consistent here?
I’ve been learning French through self study for almost 4 months and have made good progress but I feel I’d benefit from classroom study. I currently learn through watching videos and taking notes, reading textbooks and the like. I have nobody to talk to. I’m learning French for fun, not any reason. I don’t have a trip planned nor am I moving there. My native language is English and I don’t speak anything else. The Alliance Francaise School in Newport Beach is extremely expensive though. Newport Beach is full of rich retired people living in multimillion dollar mansions by the beach who can afford these expensive lessons. It’s $552 for 8 weeks 3 hours a week. The classes are during the day though, and I work, but they have PRIVATE 6 or 10 hour a week classes for 8 weeks I’m assuming at $402 for 6 hours a week and 8 weeks and $630 for 10 hours a week for 8 weeks. I am not rich and this is extremely overpriced and there are other cheaper schools with way more accommodating hours for people who aren’t retired old rich people who have nothing to do during the day. But I’ve heard Alliance Français is worth it. Should I do the private home lessons?
Have the following page from a children’s book and I’m struggling to understand the last sentence.
« Dans la prairie, Ismaël donne à boire aux moutons et Mona les caresse. Ça va les amis? »
What does the « Ça va les amis? » mean in this context?
My school doesn't offer past French 2, and I couldn't find any credited courses online past French 2. So I came here for help.
There are many, like LORSQUE, ALORS and PENDANT QUE. Could someone explain me the context, and practical examples? Thanks in advance.
I’ve been finding it helpful to supplement Duolingo with Busuu, especially the feature that allows you to have your speaking or writing corrected by native speakers. I’ve been getting a lot out of the free version so far, but if you want access to 30 days of premium (instead of just 7) you can use my referral link (which will also help me by giving me 30 days of premium access ☺️). You can learn French, English, or other languages:https://app.busuu.com/bb3siCSE9rDTrua16
