Structured Course for Complete Beginner?

My partner and I want to work through a course together. He is a complete beginner and only knows English. I know French as a heritage speaker, and I think helping him work through beginner courses would help me brush up on my French skills, too.

We need a course or series of courses that is highly structured, self-paced, for complete beginners (ideally that takes students from A0 to A1), and costs less than ~$250.

A “French 101” MOOC would be perfect, but I can’t find anything like that. Please help?

How to affirm a statement without repeating the entire phrase?

If someone gives me advice in French to, let’s say, visit the best attractions in Paris, how would I affirm that statement without repeating everything they said. In essence, how would I say the equivalent to “ok, I will!” in French?

Spoken French listening practice?

I was told by my instructor that spoken French is very difficult to understand by new learners. They recommended me to listen to a lot of normal conversations to familiarize myself with the rhythm of the language.

I am trying to find a source to practice listening, like Youtube videos or podcasts, and preferably not AI. Any recommendations?

How to say “new/present-day Maroon” in French

Hello. I am coming up with titles for a project and I’d like to use French, as the francophone world has left a significant mark on the Black world, from the works of Aime Césaire and Frantz Fanon to the Haitian Revolution. I was looking and it seems like “marron” is used interchangeably to mean “brown” the color and also “maroon” as in self-liberated formerly enslaved peoples. “Nouveau” came to mind for new/present-day but then I wondered if “nouveau marron” would make sense… any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Quelle app est meilleur ?

Donc, j'utilise le app memrise pour pratiquer mon français. Mais, je crois que le app busu est un peu meilleur pour conjuguer les mots. J'aimerais entendre des avis et des suggestions à ce sujet.

Good French YouTubers/Podcasts?

Looking for French youtubers or podcasts that are good for novice/intermediate French learner. I’m mostly trying to get a hang on sentence structure and following along to longer, more complex French. Merci!

Apartment hunting virtually since I have a limited budget and two cats

Hello everyone, I'm hoping to find an apartment in September because that's when my art prep school starts. I've heard that the apartment hunting process is unbelievably difficult for Paris. I have two cats that have to travel with me. I'd like to ask everyone if it possible to hunt for apartments virtually? I have a limited budget so I don't know if staying for months in Paris in an airbnb (I don't even know if the landlord would allow for pets) to apartment hunt would be the best idea.

I've searched around but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information about this and would desperately love for your advice TT.

Tom and Jerry mousketeer

A friend of mines showed me a clip of that specific show, and now I'm watching it again with my ears listening attentively for any words I can catch.

For anyone in A2 or B1 who want to watch French and not feel overwhelmed.

I don’t understand the translation for the concept ‘only’

For example, which of these is correct, and why?

Je ne pêche que dans les tropiques

Je pêche seulement dans les tropiques

Je pêche uniquement sous les tropiques

Subsequent question: from google translate/Deepl, it seems like ‘sous’ would be used here instead of ‘dans’. Why is this the case?

I want to say: "Everything is all right here, I hope you are fine as well over there".

So we are both in another continent and I want to 'make sure' that everything is fine over there.

I thought of this: << Tout va bien ici. J’éspere le meme chez vous >>

Qu'en pensez-vous?

Hey everyone. I'm French, and I just started a podcast all about France - how we really speak, our daily habits, and debunking popular myths about French culture. If you're curious about the real France beyond the stereotypes, this is for you!

And soon, I'll be adding a series of French lessons to help learners improve their language skills while exploring French culture.

UPDATE: "Just wanted to share a tangible visualization of my progress from 11/19 - 12/5 — you can do it too!!!" J'ai réussi le DELF B1 avec un score de 90% 🙌🙌🙌

I posted a while ago about my progress preparing for the DELF B1 exam in under a month, and I'm happy to report that I passed with a score of 90%!!!

The worst part, by far, was that they moved up my oral exam by a week, so I had to take that part with less than 3 weeks of preparation (really more like 2, because that was when they let me know the date had changed), and obviously that tends to be the most difficult for second language learners. That did end up being my lowest score, but given the circumstances I'm totally okay with that!

#My final scores:

Compréhension de l'orale: 24/25

Compréhension des écrites: 23/25

Production écrite: 23/25

Production orale: 20/25

Note finale: 90/100

So according to the email, apparently I'll get my diploma in 4-6 MONTHS, which is hilarious and the most French bureaucracy thing I think I've ever heard. But this score officially qualifies me for French citizenship, which was the whole point—woooooo!!! However, bonus, now my long-dormant passion for learning French has been fully reignited, and my 2025 goal is to pass the B2 test, which I think I'll be able to smash since B1 honestly felt pretty easy with very little preparation. And mayyyyybe I'll even go for C1 this year depending on how B2 prep goes (but I realize that's a stretch goal).

Bonnes études!

How to Learn French Effectively?

Bonjour!

I am currently in 11th grade and English is my second language. I am being pressured to learn French now because I might have to go to college in France. It’s been a few days since I’ve read up and watched youtube videos about study plans to learn this language, however I’m still unsure if the plan I made is effective and efficient.

Currently this is my study routine: Pimsleur = 2 lessons/day, 1hr Anki 5000 common words flashcard = 15mins The Perfect French with Dylane = 2 videos /day

My schedule isn’t really that packed and I have a lot of free time, so I’ve been thinking if I should add more time or mode of learning but I’m clueless. Please let me know your thoughts!

How do I go from A2 to DALF C1 ?

I know this is a HUGE leap, but my university has a partnership with multiple french universities, and they require DALF C1 for the best exchange programs. Time-wise, I have around 1 to 2 years to get to that level, and I'm willing to study hard for it, as to not throw away this huge opportunity.

Does anyone have good resources in how to best acquire this extremely high level of french ? I figured that probably doing a lot of reading is a good start.

Improve reading pronunciation?

Hello, I just started learning French maybe a week ago. I made some French friends over Christmas and picked up some phrases and decided I wanted to learn. I don’t know where to start besides Duolingo and have a 5 day streak.

I learn better when I can read but the language is so difficult for me! I’m a native English speaker and I know some Spanish which I live for how simple the alphabet is, but my god does the French alphabet make me feel like someone picking up English!! Why is water spelt “eau” but only the /u/ is pronounced?!? There’s so many silent letters (to my English ears) and letter combinations. I just want to be able to read a French book or text with proper pronunciation even if I don’t know what the words mean.

Any suggested resources on this?
