Kinesiology is the scientific study that encompasses bio-mechanical, physiological and psychological mechanisms in human or non-human movement.

What is Kinesiology?

Quite simply, it's the study of human (or even animal) movement. Depending on who you ask, this movement has to be goal-directed, or it can simply be all types of movement.

What sort of fields are included in Kinesiology? Kinesiology contains subdisciplines such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor development and learning and sports history, psychology and philosophy. Kinesiology is also a popular degree to have for people interested in going into athletic development fields such as coaching, personal training, and future education.

So Kinesiology seems pretty sports-oriented. Isn't it just the same as Phys. Ed.? Yes and no. Physical Education and Kinesiology are quite similar, but they're also different. Physical Education involves educating people about sports and exercise -- kinesiologists can do that. Whereas Physical Education focuses solely on the practical aspects of movement with respect to exercise, Kinesiology looks at the practical and theoretical aspects of all types of movement, not just exercise. Somebody with a degree in Physical Education may have spent much of their coursework in University or College learning how best to play a sport and being marked for their form; however, a Kinesiologist is often required to learn about the subdisciplines of kinesiology (listed above) and may not necessarily take courses in sports as part of the required curriculum. Many Kinesiologists do not even have to be involved with any sports but rather other aspects of movement, such as motor control.

So what's the point of this subreddit? Spreading information, mostly. Many people don't even know what Kinesiology is, and much of the current and future literature in Kinesiology is relevant to our everyday lives. This subreddit hopes to allow people to ask questions about kinesiology and to allow kinesiologists to discuss and share current research in which they and/or others are involved.

How is this subreddit different than /r/weightroom, /r/fitness, or /r/advancedfitness? /r/kinesiology aims at more of the meta side of the fitness world. While some of our content will overlap, you won't see posts/links for "How do I increase my 1RM?" or "I want to get in shape." These questions can already be answered by those other subreddits (and read their FAQ's before you post!). Questions and discussion here will pertain to the exercise field as a student or professional and will be expected to maintain an appropriate academic level.

Become sleepy during legs up on wall?

I've started elevating my legs up against the wall in the evening for ~20-30 mins after runs and have noticed that i end up starting to feel sleepy.

Importantly, this is not necessarily direct fatigue from the run per-se as, to put simply, all else is equal without the leg elevation: I study on my laptop and have been running consistently for 1 year now. This feeling of sudden onset fatigue becomes present only after around 15 mins of leg elevation against the wall.

So my questions...

  1. What could be the mechanism here?
  2. Is the leg elevation really doing much? I'm skeptical personally, especially given most generic article online seem to advocate for 10 or so minutes. How is this long enough to offset all the hours where the legs are beneath us?

Thank you!

Any grad programs that combine psychology and exercise science?

I'm an exercise science graduate with a minor in psychology and I've been curious about possible grad programs that combine psych and exercise. I'm interested in using exercise as therapy for members of my local community that struggle with mental health disorders, but I don't even know if that is possible or exists as a career option. Currently I'm studying to take the ACSM Exercise Physiologist cert and I wonder if that would allow me to work with this population. If anyone has any info or feedback on this, I'd love to hear it!

Thinking about starting

Hey guys I’m currently a respiratory therapist and a high school football coach on the side. Recently just experiencing the burnout of working with very sick patients so looking to switch careers. I love football, coaching, working with my kids, how the body moves and all that. All I’ve seen doing research on the career is why not to start up kinesiology and how there’s no jobs and everything. How true is that? And do you guys have any positives for why to get into this field?

Question about the spine (warning about the link it's a graphic video)

I don't have scoliosis, but I fear that I will get it in the future. I was watching a (Warning Graphic Surgery) video of some guys spine getting operated on and now I'm scared.

Are there any exercises I can do as someone without scoliosis to prevent such a terrible thing from happening to me in the future? Thanks.

Ancient EMG System Help

Hello! I recently purchased an old wirless Aurion Zerowire EMG system off ebay. I got it working on a windows xp laptop but am stcuk at the video phase. The software allows you to sync the emg signals with video but I have no idea what kind of camera i need or how it would even plug in and communicate with the zerowire software. I see like research cameras but they either have firewire outputs or other things that wouldn't connect into the laptop? Maybe I need a hub of some type. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks

HELP, I'm undergrad that's now thinks he's completely f**ked! (P.S. Sorry for Cussing)

Okay so just for some background info, I'm a college athlete looking to continue playing my sport while also pursuing a Master/Graduates degree.

As of right now, I am about a month out of graduating *Clap* and getting a Bachelor's degree in Science with a focus in health and wellness. For the longest I envisioned myself being a sports specific trainer, making great money because I'd be considered "niche" due to my sport, helping develop the best HS, college and professional athletes. That was until I went down the "reddit rabbit hole" and started to read posts saying that pursuing anything above a bachelor's in health and wellness is a complete fucking waste of time and that job's in the Kinesiology field will make you re-think your entire college career. I've read multiple posts where people got their Masters or PhD in a field where they become a strength and conditioning coach and bail a year or 2 after because the pay is shit and the hours and fucked. One person said that you basically have to be a better businessman than a fitness coach to survive and grow in the current industry. Needless to say this has complete fucked with my head and knocked me off course. Now with graduation right around the corner and my future uncertain I'm losing my fucking mind, constantly worrying, almost to the point of sickness, thinking that I've set myself up for failure and struggle the rest of my life.

However, part of me still thinks it's not over yet and I can end up finding a good Master's program to pursue that will make me both satisfied and financially secure later down the road. I've heard that being a Nutritionist/Dietitian is great because the pay is just under 100k and the work is pretty good but I've also thought about pursuing physical therapy. All in all, I'm worried as fuck right now, so if anyone reads this plz leave a comment and or a suggestion to help a brotha out, it would be appreciated more than you think!

What do yall search up while job hunting?

Hey y'all, I am from central Texas and have a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Business. I graduated 2 years ago and am now looking to get back into the job market. After I graduated, I was a health educator and recreational coordinator for a drug rehab facility while also working at HEB once or twice a week, the discount really comes in handy. I have been trying for the better part of a year to find a new job that pays more than HEB but have not had any luck lately. I have a certification in Personal Training but am not psyched about doing that again and am looking to get my Certification in Health Coaching. I am at a weird spot in life where I am questioning why I have this degree and realistically what I am going to do. Do y'all have any tips on what sort of job titles I should look up or companies?

Ps. I have had a good number of interviews for jobs, but I get turned down due to lack of experience or I turn them down since they want full time while paying me a lot less than HEB.

Exercise Physiologists pay in AZ

Hi there, I'm looking for some input on EPs that work on the state of AZ. I'm currently working as an exercise physiologist at my local cardiac rehab and after working for 2.6 years I'm projected to make a salary of $44,011. I'm considering moving out of my small town in the hopes of looking for a better paying job but I get a lot of conflicting information and want to know from people that are actually working in the field how much the pay is. I'm planning to get the ACSM-Clinical Exercise Physiology certification but was told that this would not qualify me for a pay raise at my current program. Any information and guidance is much appreciated 🙏

Switch BS in ExSci to MS in Sports Management

Hello, I am graduating with my BS in Exercise Science in May, but I am nervous because of the prospects of not finding a lucrative job in the field that’s not physical trainer or PE teacher.

I initially wanted to go into PT school, but my GPA is not the best and I believe I don’t have a strong enough resume to apply off the bat, and the cost/reward ratio of working as a Physical Therapist will leave me struggling financially especially while paying off student loans

Last night, I got an email stating that my academic record ensured that I got guaranteed admission into a masters program in sports management at my current university, and I am considering switching paths

I know kinesiology and sports management are two separate beasts, but will having background in both fields be beneficial? and/or has anyone else made the switch and have advice?

Taping question

The right side of my neck between my cervical spine and my ear right under the base of my skull has been very painful for quite a while - clicking cracking occasionally getting stuck. I read about trying to release the suboccipital muscles and decided to try that, and discovered that the muscle on the opposite side of my neck is very sore and tight - but not the muscle on the painful side - and the shoulder on that side also sits a little higher.

So my question is: could this be what's causing the pain in the OTHER side of my neck? And, which side of my neck should I tape for relief?

Thank you for any guidance!

College student concerned

Hi was hoping to get advice from anyone here who is a PT or sports medicine physician

I'm 20 in community college doing my general education, before going to university then hopefully medical school. I want to get a sports medicine degree and become a Physical therapist or sports medicine physician

My main question and concern is how hard is it to get into a medical school? I've been told it's very challenging and worried about spending money and time to go to community college and university just to be denied medical school and not be able to reach my goals.

I'm currently doing well in my current courses but I did have a bad year and half when I initially started college but have retaken those courses and fixed my gpa but the courses still show on my transcript.

Do you need to be a A+ student for entire college career for any hope of getting into medical school? And is there any thing I can do to increase chances?

I currently work for a city part time near my house so that is kinda my backup plan but I mainly hope to go into health field. My mother also worked many years at a hospital and has friends there and has told me she can get me an intern position at the PT office so I plan to do that as well.

Also any college advice or tips for doing well is appreciated, to see what helped others and maybe try it myself

Any advice or help is appreciated. Thank you

Struggling with hamstring pain issues.

Hi Kinesiology professionals, I have been struggling with hamstring pain, as a soccer player I’m not sure if it was the Cleats I used that caused my injury or otherwise because I used firm ground cleats on turf as Canadian winters force us to play indoor soccer, I eventually purchased turf cleats but by then I was a walking patient.

I never went for treatment , being stubborn I haven’t played since we won the indoor league 2 weeks ago, I’ve tried K-tape and feel better but am worried on how to begin light exercise without aggravating. Pardon my English, any help would be greatly appreciated thank you 😊 😊😊😊

Yea, I think I F*cked up!

Hey Reddit,

I'm reaching out for guidance as I navigate the challenging landscape of job opportunities with my exercise science degree that I obtained 5 years ago.

It's a path I pursued without fully understanding the limitations, and now, as an immigrant, I'm feeling the weight of my decision (crying in should've gotten the meno about STEM).

I don't want to get stuck with a typical personal training or teaching a group fitness class did that in college didn't like it rather move into things with corporate Wellness or working at a hospital but no luck still.

Despite relentless efforts on LinkedIn, I'm hitting roadblocks at every turn. I'm stuck in a cycle of uncertainty, unable to afford further education or pursue avenues that require hefty investments in certifications (some up to $1000 + yearly renewals). I'm currently barely just making ends meet.

As I grapple with these challenges, I'm turning to this community for any advice or insights on alternative career paths within the exercise science field or beyond. I haven't had any experience in the field just waiting tables and doing gigs here and there.

Thank you for lending an ear during this difficult time.

Jobs with MS Kin

I'll be graduating this December with my masters in applied physiology and kinesiology. I'm taking a lot of classes that would set me up to be a CEP like clinical exercise physiology, advanced ex. phys, etc. Just curious as to how difficult it was for others to find jobs after getting their MS KIN.

For reference, I already have my CSCS (had it for 2 years now) and wanted to go the strength coach route, but there's no jobs in my area for that and I cant move right now. Ive also explored the online coaching route and was essentially told to kms because I dont look like a fitness influencer.

Those who went to nursing school after your masters what was that like?

Im looking at going to nursing school mainly because upward mobility in exercise physiology is not really practical. I talked to my director and she said a bridge program is a good option for BSN instead of doing an ADN.

I am interested in hearing talks experiences with transitioning and what path you took. Anyone do online classes then clinical hours in a hospital? Really anything about your experience would be great.

I love our field but it’s not practical for me in my individual situation.

Old injury question

About 2 years ago, I partially tore my bicep at the elbow. I went to the ortho after an MRI and the doc basically said “let’s just see what happens” in lieu of surgery or any PT. I’ve been able to resume activities for the most part. I’ve done 25# dumbbell curls but was scared to do much more or any herky jerky lifting.

I don’t know if the tear could have healed itself over that time frame. Maybe scar tissue has formed. I don’t know anything about that. It will get tender from time to time depending on the activity.

Do you guys think it’s ok to resume moderate to heavy lifting?

I received good tips from this forum on my previous question regarding limited dorsiflexion.

given that the dorsiflexion is limited on my right ankle, do you recommend lifting in olympic lifting shoes with heels elevated? does it hurt to have the heels elevated on the non effected side where i do not have dorsiflexion limitation

I want to work for a professional sports team. How do I get there?

I’m currently a freshman at Texas A&M university and I found myself having very little motivation. I realized it’s because i don’t know what my goals are exactly. I know my “dream job” is to work for the Houston Astros but If i’m being honest, I don’t know how to get there. For context, i’m a first generation student and the whole college system really confuses me. I’ve played basketball my whole life and love watching sports and i really want to work on the sideline with athletes. I also think it would be really cool to work with F1 Drivers although i know that one is pretty far fetched. i’m currently taking all my core classes still, and haven’t even started any anatomy classes. I don’t even exactly know what kinesiology degree plan to follow (applied exercises, basic exercises physiology, applied exercised physiology) Im looking for a sort of road map to follow, because right now i’m totally lost and unmotivated. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Knee pain

Hi everyone. Looking for some feedback from people who’ve struggled with similar pain and found relief (especially after a fall would be helpful).

31 yo female. Back on my honeymoon in October I took an unfortunate hard fall on flat terrain on a mountain (ouch). I was in a lot of pain and after nursing it and being evaluated by a doctor out of the country, I was told I had contusions from the fall and should heal OK. Did a lot of icing and mostly stayed off my feet as much as I could (but traveling of course).

Fast forward mid-November I’m home 2 weeks later and got into an orthopedist who recommended PT and did xray and everything checked out. I started PT in mid Dec and noticed some real improvement. I slowly was able to incorporate my usual activities including a couple slow walk/jogs a couple miles, some spinning, a few HIIT classes, etc. into mid-February. Unfortunately after 2 HIITs 2 days in a row (which I hadn’t done in years), I think I reinjured myself. The straining feeling felt like it came on with a vengeance even though I felt fine before.

For the past 6 weeks, I’ve taken it way easier. I rested as much as I could tolerate with just walks, maybe one spin here or there. I got back into PT after the ortho recommended MRIs and it ALSO checked out. Ortho says I’ve developed post fall what’s called “patellofemoral pain syndrome” which sounds vague but said PT and gradual exercise is all he’d recommend at this point.

Present: back in PT, yay! PT told me 2 weeks ago I need to fully rest and prob have underlying inflammation. It’s been so tough as I’m an active person for my mental and physical health, but no matter what, I sometimes have this lingering straining feeling around my kneecap. It’s this fatiguing feeling that’s hard to describe but I imagine others will understand. Also doesn’t feel realistic if I rested off my legs a week and still have a bit of soreness anyway then what’s the point? PT continues to focus on strength of glutes hips quads which I’ve read is correct.

TLDR: patellofemoral pain syndrome - will it ever go away? I feel fed up between rest and trying to resume activities. Never had injuries before and active person. All from a hard fall 5 months ago now. Should I get another opinion from a new PT or ortho? Imaging all clear. I’ve heard it can take up to a year esp as we age to heal and I’m 31 yo female. Need PT to at least let me walk but told even that is hard on knees. Any suggestions let me know!
