I visited Pera Palas hotel in 2006 and took this picture. Recently I returned and asked where these plaques were. No one had heard of them. Even the manager was surprised they even existed. Someone stole them during the renovations.

My 7 day itinerary in Istanbul in November

I just came back from a 7 day trip in Istanbul and thought I would share my itinerary and general experience as I found reddit useful whilst away and wanted to give back.

For context I am a female (30s) who went away with my mum (60s). We went in November which was cold but generally dry however we carried an umbrella as there were short bursts of rain. We found that coming at this time meant that it wasn’t heaving with people and we didn’t have problems with queuing to get into places. The people were very friendly and helpful and we felt extremely safe.

Fatih was a good location for us as tourists as it meant that we were able to walk most places and go back to our hotel before heading out again for dinner on some days.

It is worth taking your headphones with you as your mobile can be used as an audioguide in some places and avoids needing to buy headphones.

We managed to get around using public transport easily. The metro and tram were great but the bus was a nightmare when getting to the airport. We abandoned the bus and got a yellow taxi easily via Uber which was reasonably priced.

Day 1- arrived at 3 pm at sabiha gökçen international airport. We bought a 10 pass travel ticket at the airport and used the metro and tram to get to our hotel in Fatih which took 1.5 hours. Google maps helped with this.

Day 2- We walked to Yani Cami Mosque, Gülhane Park and then to Topkapi Palace. The cost of the ticket for Topkapi Palace and the Harem apartments was 1700TL. We spent 4.5 hours here. We ate somewhere outside the palace which was a bit of a tourist trap and not the best food.

Day 3- We walked to Hagia Sophia and bought the Visiting area and Experience Museum ticket which was an eye watering 1872 TL each (975TL for Hagia Sophia and 897TL for the experience). The experience museum is another building and gave some great history about the Hagia Sophia but was an expensive add on.  We sat in the gardens then went to the Blue mosque which was free.

Day 4- Walked around the Grand Bazaar and then Egyptian Market. We also took a 1 hour Bosphorus Ferry trip for 150TL each from outside the Egyptian Market.

Day 5- We took the tram to Dolmabache palace. The ticket was 1200TL which included access to the palace, the harem and paining museum. We spent 4.5 hours here.

Day 6- We took the bus to Taksim square and walked down to istiklal street and wondered along the side streets. We walked down to the Galata tower. A ticket costs 30 euros to go up. They will charge more and give your headphones and say it’s included in the price (1400TL) and we needed to be relatively firm and say we only wanted to pay 30euros and gave the headphones back. We walked along the bridge and saw all the fishermen. We went to the Hodjapasha whirling dervish ceremony in the evening which personally I found mesmerising!

Day 7- We went to the Turkey İş Bank Museum which is free and really cool to see the old safes. Made the mistake of trying to get the bus and metro to Istanbul airport. The 22 minute (according to google maps) bus journey took 1.5 hours and a woman on the bus explained that she would always try to avoid the bus, especially if she needed to be on time.

We generally had a very leisurely pace to the trip and didn’t rush any of the places we visited with time to rest and food in-between activities. We personally think that we didn’t need any more time but if we stayed longer could have explored other areas.

Some great meals we had were:

    Self service restaurants

    sehzade cag kebab istanbul (Fatih)

    İSKENDER Kuruluş 1867 (near Dolmabache)

    Bitlisli (Fatih)

    Hope this helps!

Where can I watch the F1 Qatar Grand Prix near Taksim or Galata?

    Merhaba Istanbul,

I’m currently in Istanbul on a two-week trip and absolutely loving the city—the culture, the food, the stunning architecture, and most of all, the wonderful people. I’m hoping to catch the F1 Qatar Grand Prix tomorrow (Sunday) and was wondering if there are any bars or places near Taksim or Galata where I can watch it?

I’d really appreciate any recommendations and tips! Planning to do a detailed post about my experience in this incredible city soon.

    Teşekkürler!

Edit: Preferably somewhere they serve Torch Honey Pepper(I just love that beer)

    Immigrating to istanbul

I'm thinking about immigrating to either istanbul or Ankara but the posts that I see on reddit makes me question my decision, because most of people said that it is almost impossible to get work permit(it technician) or residency permit and find work there and I'm on a tight budget to go there and see by myself, I'm on 1300 usd so what do you think should I take the leap of faith or just forget it

    Istanbul Budget Advice

    Hi Guys

I have never been to Istanbul but I have spent a lot of time on this reddit page so I know that inflation has shot up like crazy. People regularly say it is now more expensive than London, Paris, Los Angeles, even Tokyo!

I find this hard to believe because flights and accommodation are pretty cheap.

I'm very keen to go to Istanbul with two of my mates for two weeks in Jan/Feb, I'm hoping the colder season will help us.

So, do you think we will be able to find bars pretty easy with beers costing 100 lira and restaurants with meals for 300 lira or are we now in dreamland? We are not fixated on staying in any particular area in Istanbul. I know it is vast. We just want some decent nightlife and signts. Surely there most be some decent priced bars and restaurants still? I do hear regularly on this subreddit that tourist attraction prices are gone up like crazy acorss the board so we will completely steer clear of this if we need to.

    Thanks!

Würde can i find a large variety of cigarette brands

    Hey guys,

I‘m staying in Istanbul for work and I‘m wondering where I can find a larger offer of different cigarette brands. I smoke Chesterfield Orange (or in some countries still Red). I do find a lot of shops which offer the navy blue ones but haven‘t mange to find the red/orange ones.

My hotel is in Altunizade but as I have just arrived and haven‘t got around I wouldn’t have a problem with moving around a bit.

Has anyone an idea? I have already looked at the duty free shops as I arrived.

    Thanks for your help!

    Living in Istanbul - money

My partner and I are moving to Istanbul in January for my work (my partner is taking a career break). I will earn in EUR, approximately 5,500 net. Our accommodation in the centre (European side), bills, and health insurance will be covered by my employer. We don’t have children and aren’t planning to have a car initially. Will this be enough to maintain a reasonable standard of living? For example, eating out, good gym, hiring a cleaner once a week, etc. I am worried as everyone seems to suggest the prices are crazy high nowadays....

How cold is Istanbul in December

I'm considering visiting at that time, but I want to know if the temperatures are likely to be unbearably cold.I want to know the typical weather conditions to help me decide whether to continue with my plans or delay the trip to a more favorable season.

And also how crowded is instanbul with tourists this time of year compared to other times

    Renting room for a zoom-call

Hi :) in a December afternoon I'll need to attend an online call from Istanbul. As I am staying at friends, I'd rather rent a quiet room for two hours. Wifi and a desk is all I need. Does someone know a place?

I saw a website that rents out conference rooms, though most where for around ten peoples and therefore quite expensive. Below 500tl would be awesome, below 1000tl is possible I guess. European side preferred.

    Thx!

Selamlar. Redditi normalde sadece postları okumak için kullanıyorum ilk kez bir post paylaşacağım. Eğer bu sub'a uygun değilse kaldırabilirim. Dişlerime protez yaptırmam gerekiyormuş, bunu nerede yaptırabilirim? Öğrenci olduğum için özel bir kurumda yapamıyorum maalesef. İnternetten araştırdım ama bulamadım. Your Favorite Tantuni in Kadikoy

Hello lovely people of Istanbul. I am fortunate enough to be visiting your beautiful city for my first time in 2 weeks. My flight gets in at 7:30pm and I want my first meal to be tantuni. I'm staying in the Kadikoy area, so I was hoping I could get recommendations for any locals favorite spot that will be open.

I had originally targeted Besalti Kirvem Tantuni however, it appears that location is now closed. So I would appreciate it if anyone could point me towards what they think is the best Tantuni in the area.

    Thank you very much
