How does Siemens deals with shaft currents on their motors ?!

We have a lot of siemens vfd controlled motors going from 70kw to 450kw, and while I see that every single one has an insualted bearing on the non drive end, there is nothing on the drive end like special brushes that could help to discharge the shaft currents.

I couldn't find anything in their large catalogue either other than the option for ceramic bearings.

So how does siemens deals with shaft currents exactly ?!

Transitioning career to IE?

I've recently been laid off from my 20+ year career in Arch Viz, and there's little to nothing on the horizon in that field. My wife is in IE in our conversations, I've found that I really love that kind of work/mindset, and I've been doing a lot of process improvement/logic thinking in my current career without knowing it.

I've talked with her on recommendations, but I also wanted to hear from others on what you all think would be a good move. I've seen good and bad things about getting a Green Belt cert. I've crafted my resume as much as I can to show my process improvement skills, but I don't have anything on there to get my foot in the door yet.

btw...my wife recommended the iise or the Purdue courses, if I were to take one.

Technical Elective

I'm a senior with one semester left and one elective left. I feel like i have the theory and logistics stuff down , so i was wondering if should use it on a introductory Cnc class. I honestly have little practical knowledge of any machining and feel a bit left behind on it.

IE in Hospitals and Healthcare

I am interested in doing health care process improvement for the bulk of my career. As I’ve heard expressed in another thread of mine, as well as in others, Healthcare process improvement is more about finding ways to upcharge than to actually improve services and saving money.

I am mainly interested in doing good work. I was wondering if you guys think the strategy of working for a crappy hospital that could really use the help and therefore has more projects to do but may pay less on an internship or even full time work is better than going for a big competitive spot at a major hospital but they don’t offer any meaningful work or projects?

How easy is it to switch specialties?

I am interested in three different industries where I could use IE:

  1. Gas/Oil - Getting paid big bucks would be nice but the industry isn’t the most interesting in my view.

  2. Healthcare/Hospitals - Improving service in healthcare is a personal mission of mine after many negative experiences for myself and my family.

  3. Agriculture/Food production & processing/AgroChemicals - My personal passion. Anything turning raw material into usable product makes me happy. Flour and water and yeast into bread, scraps into compost, backyard homemade clay into brick, wood into wood gas (and getting wtf looks from my dad) I just love all that stuff.

Is it possible to move areas easily? Realistically if I want to start in Oil and Gas for the funds, then go to Health for the bulk of my career. Then more as an entrepreneurial thing do Ag related work.

Thoughts?

Joining IE Masters

I’ll be joining IE masters program this fall.

What are some things I should definitely catch up on/ revise during the break? Also, what about applying to internships after joining for the next summer. I want to do a concentration in data analytics with my masters.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you happy working for a salary?

I just graduated last year. Bachelor in industrial engineering.

Recent IE grads in the job market are paid somewhere around USD1,000.00/month and USD1,187.50/month (maybe USD1,250.00/month). Needless to say it's not the US job market. Somehow, I managed to get a job before graduating, but my salary is USD625.00/month

I can barely afford things. I couldn't deliver a project on time and complete, but other than that I've worked pretty well and I even stay after 5pm (my work schedule is from 7am to 5 pm). So I work like 11 or 12 hours per day. This is my first job as bachelor degree holder.

Nonetheless, I don't feel alright working for a salary. I've had a lot of work to do and I've done it, but I don't see more money in my paycheck. The more I get done the more I should get paid, right? Well It's not my case.

I'm not alright with it (I'm sick of it) and I need a job where the more I work the more I get paid. Do you know of any in which my degree is useful?

Thanks in advance.

Job referal

Hey everyone, I am an international student. I graduated with a Masters in IE back in 2021 with a 3.97 gpa and have worked as a validation engineer for over a year but got laid off last year and havent had any luck since finding a job. If anyone here can refer me to any kind of job related to IE or quality, it would be of great help. I have six sigma green belt certification as well. Hope someone replies to this post.

Advice for uni freshman who wants to transfer to IE

I'm a mechanical engineering student who wants to switch to industrial engineering. However, my uni doesn't offer IE so I have to transfer.

I wasn't planning on studying engineering when I was in high school so I don't have any ECs related to engineering. All I did was play 3 varsity sports (all year round) and ran a club dedicated to fundraising for people with medical needs. During my freshman year of uni, I didn't pursue anything that can help me succeed in the field of IE. The only noteworthy accomplishments this year is my 4.0 GPA and participation in resesrch with a graduate student who's studying CS. I applied for funding and got 3K from the university for that research (if this matters at all).

I want to make sure I can transfer to a university that offers IE and also become successful in the field. Are there any tips and advice for things I can start doing now to stand out as an applicant and succeed in the field? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thank you for taking your time to read through this. :)

Career advice

Hello, I'm 37F. I got a B.S. in I.E. 15 years ago, but I haven't actually worked after I got my degree, because I got married and have kids. I only interned in my senior year. As my kids are older now, I'm thinking about going back to work. Should I get a masters degree, get some kind of certificates, or try a completely different career (thinking about coding)? Or what other options do I have? What's the best and quickest way for me to get back to the workforce? We're financially stable right now, but I would love to get back to work asap. However, if I need time to learn new skills, or relearn old skills, that wouldn't be a problem either. Oh, and I'm somewhat an introvert, so I would prefer the least amount of people interaction if possible. I appreciate all the answers!

Time Study Software Suggestion?

I am being asked to complete a time study of a fairly complex process. In a normal cycle, multiple robots are performing tasks at the same time. Typically our department uses WorkStudy+ for time studies. Elements in WorkStudy+, or sub tasks within the main cycle, are recorded in succession. It is not possible to record more than one element at the same time.

To work around this problem, our team typically uses multiple tablets all running WorkStudy+ with one IE studying the sepate and simultaneous parts of the process. We then combine the data after the study to one time index.

This solution isn’t very scaleable. What is a better way of doing this type of study?

Best reference for MTM?

MTM (Methods Time Management) is a complex system. I have learned a very basic part of it when I was an undergraduate. Now I want to learn more about MTM, especially its practical applications in manufacturing. Can you recommend some comprehensive and detailed reference materials?

Need advice

Hi, im 22F, an international business (bba, marketing) undergrad student (batch of spring 2024). Thinking to switch field from marketing to supply chain or related.

I feel like i do good when it comes to field work or when it comes to using the common sense. However, my academic qualifications are very average and i struggle with theory etc. I recently discovered this IE field, and im thinking to apply for masters in US. I need help and recommendations if going to this field with not so strong MATH background, a good idea? I did well in my accounting & stats courses during undergrad tho

Advice on job hunting

I graduated college with my bachelor’s in industrial engineering in august. I’ve been applying to places ever since then. I’ve had 2 interviews that I thought went well but did not get either job. I do not have any engineering experience. I’m looking for an entry level job in the Phoenix area (not Tucson). Does anyone have any advice on what companies I should apply for or what I could do to finally start my career?

Process Integration Engineer VS Industrial Engineer

Hi, folks! I want to find a job in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. According to the current recruitment information, most semiconductor manufacturing companies are recruiting PIEs instead of IEs, and the job descriptions of PIEs look very similar to IEs (like OEE and 6S management). But I don't know the specific difference between the two because I only have experience in IE in the machinery manufacturing industry. Does PIE require more complex skills than IE, or is there no difference between the two except for the name?

Job Market

What's your perspective on the current state of the job market, especially regarding the difficulty in securing entry-level positions? As an international graduate student graduating this May, I find the job market exceedingly challenging. Additionally, there seems to be a significant number of 'ghost jobs'—positions that appear available but lead nowhere. I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts and advice on navigating the present job market conditions.

Capstone and Feasibility Study

Any Filipino Industrial Engineering student or graduate here? Or anyone who can suggest a capstone or feasibility study that is related to IE? I'm just preparing myself for my senior year (next year) because most of our seniors had to take these subjects twice or more so they fail to graduate on time.

Considering Civil Engineering vs Industrial & Systems Engineering or another path.

Hey everyone! I'm currently diving deep into the sea of potential majors and considering my future career path. I've been closely looking at the NVCC Programs, with a particular focus on a B.S. in Civil & Infrastructure Engineering, complemented by a minor in Environmental Engineering.

Ideal Job Traits: A Wishlist for the Future

I'm envisioning a job that not only fulfills me but also aligns with my personal goals and values. Here's what my ideal scenario looks like: (The more check boxes the better)

  • Living and working in urban or suburban settings, despite the higher cost of living.
  • Supporting a family of four comfortably.
  • Flexibility to work hybrid/remote and sometimes outdoors.
  • Opportunities for career advancement.
  • Security against being replaced by AI or outsourced labor.
  • Contributing positively to society, particularly in environmental and conservation efforts.
  • Stability, with the agility to move between companies for better opportunities, especially during economic downturns.
  • Freedom to choose between government and private sector roles.
  • Travel opportunities, both domestically and internationally.
  • Working autonomously or in small, dynamic teams.
  • Utilizing design, editing, and markup software.
  • Access to entry-level positions post-graduation.

Education Pathway: A Balanced Approach

As for my education journey, I'm leaning towards:

  • A well-rounded curriculum that challenges without overwhelming.
  • A supportive environment with a low dropout rate.
  • The ability to secure a job with just a bachelor's degree.

Fields of Interest: Evaluating Options

I'm open to exploring several fields, each with its unique appeal:

  • Mechanical Engineering: The versatility and focus on building societal infrastructure are attractive, though it seems more challenging than Civil Engineering.
  • Industrial & Systems Engineering: Seems less abundant in job opportunities compared to Civil/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Information Technology: Not keen on programming, and the job market outlook seems daunting.
  • Marketing Research, Data Analytics, Finance, Accounting, Economics: Drawn to the analytical and financial aspects, with the potential for high earnings and a relatively easier educational path.
  • Political Science/International Relations: A broader interest in how societal systems operate and interact on a global scale.

Would love to hear your thoughts, advice, or any insights you might have. What do you think about these paths, and do you have any recommendations or experiences to share?

Time studies template

In screen printing and digital printing. Recently a time study was done for value added services. Need a time study template to use for it. Unable to use existing time sturdy sheets, as they're not really suitable for VAS.

Accounting to IE?

So, I am at a bit of a crossroads and have a choice in front of me that would enable me to go down the IE road. Currently, I am in accounting and I have always had a mind for CI stuff. I know personally my skillset is a fit, but education wise I have a BS in Accounting and I am not sure if that would be something that would eventually turn into a roadblock without getting additional education.

My question is, what is the field like for advancement opportunities for those that didn't get any engineering degree? Obviously, I know some areas of IE are not going to allow it since some jobs require actual technical know how.

Either way, I was just curious on the viability of a career path switch like this.

I know my resume will be a large part of it too, luckily my resume is all different fields and positions so it shows versatility and adaptability which I am sure looks good when going for a CI position.
