Welcome to r/IWantOut: Reddit's expatriate community. Please take a look at the sidebar for some tips for getting the most out of it.

Welcome to r/IWantOut, Reddit's expat subreddit. Please read the sidebar for general advice and helpful links.

If you want out of wherever you live, we're here to help.

Got questions? Want advice and experience from people who have gotten out or are still trying? Have a good tip or a success story to tell? Just need support? No matter where you're from or where you're going, you're welcome here.

☞This is a space to discuss strategies and advice for legal immigration, NOT to debate about refugees, undocumented migrants, the ethics/wisdom of various immigration policies, etc. Posts and comments that stray from the subject of legal immigration will be removed and you may be warned or banned depending on the severity of the offense. Report rule violations. If you have any questions, feel free to message the mods with violations.

★ RULES ★

  1. Be respectful and stay on the topic of legal emigration/immigration. This is not a political subreddit. Politics might be the reason you want out, which is perfectly fine. Instead of writing 3 paragraphs about what specifically you don't like, write "I disagree with the politics" and then talk about what you're looking for. It'll help prevent purely political comments.

  2. No requesting or giving advice on how to conduct illegal activities, including marriage to strangers. We want you to be safe, and, furthermore, such posts violate reddit's sitewide policies.

  3. When requesting/giving advice, please be as detailed as possible when describing your situation: country of origin/destination, age range, education, qualifications, budget, etc. We do allow "-> anywhere" posts. Please do your own research to find a short list of countries you'd like to go to. You need to include extra information based on what criteria you have (weather, jobs, etc.). Lack of narrowing criteria will result in post removal.

  4. Observe the title format. All posts must follow our prescribed title format, violations of this will be removed. Please look at the wiki for specific formatting information. Do not use a different post type tag to bypass formatting requirements. The format is simple enough to follow, and you can test it at the following link before posting. The mods will not approve posts which do not pass the title format restrictions.

  5. Recommendations are OK; spam/advertising is not. If you're not sure if your post follows this, ask. In general, posting links to things is welcome as comments on relevant posts, but we rarely allow them as posts. In order to prevent our community from being inundated with survey requests, we universally do NOT allow surveys. If you ask the mods to post your survey, you will be politely declined. If you post anyway, you will be permanently banned.

  6. Please report rule violations. If you notice a violation of Rules 1, 2, 3, or 5, please REPORT it. Please do not send links of these posts/comments to modmail. The one exception to this is Rule 4: Observe the title format, please send Rule 4 violations to modmail. We don't accept reports on the title format, because we've found that the majority of those reports are incorrect as people don't understand the title format. Instead, we ask that you send links to modmail, so that if you're incorrect, we can at least explain why you're incorrect so that hopefully in the future, you'll know what to look out for.

★ PROTIPS ★

  • Permanently residing in a country in which you currently don't have citizenship almost always requires a visa (legal permission to live there). Visa rules differ depending on the country/region, but they generally require that you demonstrate a good reason for moving there: family, in-demand skills, pursuit of higher education, etc. It can be a daunting process, but if you're serious about getting out you should thoroughly research the visa you'll need to obtain to do so. Some of the links below might help.

  • Are you upset about the political situation in your country? Fair enough. But do your homework and don't make any rash decisions – immigration takes time and effort, and the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Remember, too, that /r/IWantOut is for requesting and sharing tips for legal immigration, not having political debates. It's OK to say, "I'm looking for a country with X policies on issue Y," but be sure to stay civil and stay on topic.

  • Before posting, try searching the subreddit (at the top of this sidebar). It's possible your question has been asked before.

  • Can't find the answer you're looking for here? Check to see if there's a subreddit for the country and/or city you want to go to.

[IWantOut] 28F Canada -> Russia

Hi! Hoping this reaches the right folks (hopefully other Canadians who have visited or moved to Russia, as well as Russian citizens offering advice!)

The first thing many people will ask is “Why?” as per my searches of similar posts. It’s really quite simple;

There are certainly pros and cons to ALL countries. Canada was nice when i was growing up. In the recent years it’s become unrecognizable to me. I’m not fond of the way Canada is run. (Housing, food costs, shortages, “living wage”, policies, healthcare the list goes on). These are basic structures that form our lives and we either align with it greatly or not. I love Canadians, our nature and the culture i had growing up which mind you is clouded and seemingly forgotten with all the other BS distracting us.

ANYWAY - I think Russia has such rich culture, vast and diverse nature/landscapes, better prices (comparing CAD/RUB, and outside major cities of course), hospitable and enthusiastic locals, a sense of tradition & common sense type of people.

I’m aware we can sometimes get an idea and feel like the grass is greener on the other side. Of course i intend to have lengthy visits first if it worked out. What i see online VS what i hear from actual Russians that i know are completely different things. This isn’t political for me, i cannot judge any people of a country based on their politics that’s just ridiculous. I would like to make the discovery for myself rather than relying on what’s on TV.

This is a lingering idea of mine and i research more every day. I have yet to be deterred. Any thoughts ? Hopefully the target audience is reached! Спасибо

[WeWantOut] 19F 18M Student USA -> Australia

I'm a student working on my bachelor's degrees in computer programming and experimental arts (3d, 2d, animation, etc). I'm hoping to get into the STEM field in the future. Originally I was thinking about working for a American game company but there's a few issues with that. I feel that America is going to get worse soon. I really worry about my brother and I. We're both LGBTQ and the project 2025 thing is freaking me out. Also I've seen photos of the aftermath of a elementary school shooting and that just only solidify my reasoning to leave America. Any tips on where to even start? Should I just stay in America until I graduate?

[IWantOut] 28M United States -> Brazil

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to start my Brazilian citizenship application.

So my situation is that I am an American citizen who was born in the United States, and that my mother is also solely an American citizen born in the United States. However, her father (my grandfather) was a Brazilian citizen.

Talking this prospect over with people at the Brazilian consulate in the past, I've more or less gotten the impression that I can become a Brazilian citizen so long as she becomes one first. However, I have heard conflicting information as to whether we must apply in person in Brazil, or if this is something that can be handled in an embassy. The sticking point I think is that her father passed away in 1972.

This was always an idea we had and kept on the back burner, but recently with my new job, it's become hugely advantageous if I were able to have a Brazilian passport to travel with, and it would basically be the deciding factor whether I get a certain type of work that I'd really like to get into, and so I'm willing to spend some money to get this done since it'd be worth it in the end.

Does anyone have any immigration lawyers they could point me to who'd be particularly well suited for this type of situation? Or does anyone have any insight as to whether this is something that can be resolved in the United States, or whether we'd have to travel to Brazil for this?

[Citizenship] -> Mexico: How does the two year residency requirement work for having both a work visa and marriage to Mexican citizen?

Hello all, I have a question about getting citizenship in Mexico after having a temporary work visa and marrying a Mexican citizen. I am in the process of obtaining my work visa and am recently engaged to a Mexican citizen. I will receive my temporary residency many months to a year before we plan on getting married. My question is if the two year temporary residency requirement before citizenship counts for any type of temporary residency, or only the time after being legally married. For example if I work legally in Mexico for a year and then get married, would I have to wait two more years to convert my residency into citizenship? Or does the year prior to marriage also count towards the two year requirement for spouses of Mexican citizens receiving citizenship? Thank you!

[IWantOut] 24m UK -> Australia

Hi all, my girlfriend and I are looking to relocate to Perth and are looking for any tips or advice from those who have been through a similar process. She is a teacher and I am a software engineer, both with 2 years experience in our fields and postgraduate degrees. Both our professions are listed on the skilled immigration list meaning we are able to apply for the 189 visa or be sponsored for the 190. However we are also considering taking the working holiday visa to move out there sooner and look for employment once there. Trying to avoid going through an agency due to the cost. Are there any recruiters in either field which might be a good place to start looking for jobs which offer sponsorship (if this is common)? And has anyone been down either path and what were your experiences?

[IWantOut] 19M Bangladesh->USA

Hello there, I'm 19 years old from Bangladesh. My father is an American citizen but he refuses to sponsor me for visa. I face problems in my "home country" due to me leaving my previous religion and for my sexual orientation as well. I was wondering how much is the possibility of my humanitarian parole getting accepted or if I can get any help on this issue.

[IWantOut] 28M Italy -> Australia

Hey guys, i will be in Australia with WHV in december for the first time. I was thinking about camping in designed areas with a simple tent and buying / renting a bycicle to move around, i'm planning to stay around Perth , through the WC and the southern parth (let's say in the part beetween Albany and Perth). My goal is to save money and work here, while casually moving around and enjoying nature.

Do you think this may be a good idea? Is it legal to place a tent during the night in the areas you can find for example in the "CamperMate" App? Is it dangerous? Will i have any trouble with dangerous animal or dangerous people ? or unpleasant weather?

I think this type of trip can be fun and cheap either. Am i wrong? Tips? Suggestions?

[IWantOut] 21M Indonesia -> Australia/New Zealand

Hello, I'm interested to work as a miner in Australia.

I have no experience at mining beforehand, but I looked at Australia's Skills Priority List and it looks like there's a huge shortage of miners in all states. So, can a foreigner like me enrol to an Australian mining course? If it's possible, what are the requirements?

Sidenote: I'm aware that the process might take years, because I have to save some amounts of money, the visa bureaucracy etc, because my passport is somewhat weak.

[IWantOut] 25f SocialMedia UK -> Australia

I am wondering if anyone knows the process of moving permanently to Australia. I'm finding it difficult to find the information I need on it, like can I apply for permanent residency without having a work visa first? I currently work in social media and I am at a mid/ senior level. I hold a British and Irish passport. What are the first steps? I want to live here long term, so having the work visa for 6 months doesn't seem ideal. Can anyone help?

[IWantOut] 51M Canada -> Netherlands

Posting on behalf of a friend.

My friend was born in Canada in 1972 to a Dutch mother and would now like to retire in the EU.

What are his options to obtain a Dutch passport?

From what I understand, because it was his mother and not his father who was a Dutch citizen at the time of his birth, he’s not automatically a Dutch citizen.

I’m struggling to understand the requirements of citizenship by option. Does he need to move to the Netherlands first to be able to apply for citizenship…? Get a work visa first?

Please if anyone is familiar with the process, help would be greatly appreciated.

[IWantOut] 25m USA -> Spain

Hi, I have a B.S. in Biology and Hispanic Relations (Spanish) with certificates in nutrition. Although I have been aiming for healthcare, now I am having doubts about my career ambitions while at the same time growing more and more indifferent with my area. I have always been enchanted with the style of living in southern Europe. I have visited in the past for several weeks and admired the similarities and differences to my own environment. I would like to use this as an opportunity to get new life experiences, without worrying as much about career motives while I figure more of my path.

I already hold an EU passport and speak Spanish, so there would be less tape to cross, but l'm wondering what potential obstacles still may come about. I have $10k+ in savings that would help me with the transition, but I also wouldn't mind taking up service jobs (e.g. bartender, barista; I have plenty of experience in the latter). If I had to pick a most preferred spot, would say Barcelona. Love everything about the culture and environment.

Also there seem to be the most opportunities for bilingual english/spanish speakers there. I've seen companies like Teleperformance that always are in need of employees. Is this realistic? As I am still examining my options, would I find more flourishing opportunities for bilinguals elsewhere?

[IWantOut] 37m Myanmar -> Ireland/Germany/Spain

Hi all, I am posting this on behalf of a friend who lives in Myanmar. He is a trained chef de Partie and has B.Sc in chemistry from Yadanarbon University in Myanmar. He most recently was working as a Demi chef de partie in the Shangri-La Hotel in the UAE for two years but is looking for another option.

He has other professional training from hospitality (including Servsafe certificate). He speaks very good English (I was his ESL teacher several years ago) and has 14 years of experience in professional kitchens.

His dream is to live in Europe and work as a chef, but he is also open to other places. He doesn’t have a Reddit account so I volunteered to post this on his behalf. He’s a wonderful person and I’d love to help him out, as you can imagine Myanmar is not an easy place to live right now.

All advice and ideas are appreciated ❤️

[IWantOut] 36M Taiwan -> Poland

Hello, I need some advice. I am Taiwanese and looking for a opportunities to work and live outside Asia. I am a 36-year-old male, which unfortunately makes me too old for working holiday visa. My background is in IT (full stack developer, mostly in frontend)

I'm considering moving to Poland and have done some research on living there. It seems like a place I might like it. But I don't know yet. I will visit Poland in person to see if I can get used to the environment there.

I have some question for anyone familiar with the process:

(1) When I visit Poland, can I try to find a job or contact recruiters so we might meet? Maybe we can meet. If I am hired, is it possible to transfer my visa to work visa?

(2) If I can't find a job in Poland due to lack of proper identification, can I just enroll in a Polish language school so that I can work as a student?

[IWantOut] 29M Marketing Philippines -> Netherlands

My mom's cousin (Dutch) is inviting me to live with them. They are like my second parents so housing won't matter. The real problem is my qualifications. I'm willing to be trained or study again if my Marketing bachelor's is not enough. I also have no family and children so there won't be any responsibilities tying me up.

Some facts about me:

  • I'm working freelance atm (digital marketing)
  • I got long experience 10+ years of being a retail store manager
  • I can communicate well in English
  • I will learn Dutch if needed (currently studying Mandarin rn)
  • I'm keen into studying anything at the moment as long as it helps me migrate

Some questions:

  • Is my bachelors enough to secure work? Or should I opt for masters?
  • Is marketing a good career path to migrate? Or should I change careers and study another bachelors? I want to fill in the demand for the job market.
  • Are there any recommended routes / should I be doing other things instead?

[IWantOut] 23F USA -> Argentina/Uruguay/Spain

Hi! I‘m (23F) not thinking about immigrating from the United States to Argentina/Spain/Uruguay. In my case, I’m planning to apply for a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Argentina (although I’ve kept Spain and Uruguay in mind). I’m aware of the political and economic situations over there, as I’ve consumed media and talked to language partners from Argentina. Also, I should note that the Fulbright stipend in Argentina is in USD.

Regarding my qualifications, I plan to graduate with my bachelor’s degree in December. I have a couple of years of tutoring experience, a semester of research experience, and I speak an upper-intermediate level of Spanish. Last year, I participated in one of my university’s panels, advocating for Hispanic students, as I’m a student who’s Puerto Rican and Cuban. (This part seems random, but it’s pretty relevant because of my plans after Fulbright.)

If I get into Fulbright, I plan to help with teaching English courses, take courses on Latin American studies/literature, and become fully bilingual. After that, I plan to return to the United States to go to graduate school and advocate for Hispanic students in higher education. (The number of Hispanic students in higher education is growing, and I’m concerned about how our institutions will further support them in the future. So I’d like to make that a part of my career goals.)

Currently, I have been finding in-network healthcare centers, websites about apartments for rent, and transportation through Subte/Sube. Do you have any advice on going to Argentina for a temporary time? Are there any random facts that foreigners might not know about Argentina until they move — especially to cities like Buenos Aires, Mendoza, or Ushuaia? Also, do you have any advice or tips regarding Galicia, Spain, or Montevideo, Uruguay? (I’m open to safe recommendations. Please don’t make any recommendations that are risky, sketchy, or illegal.)

Thanks!

[IWantOut] 21M Mexico -> Canada

Since I was younger my dream life has always been to move to either Canada or the US, now I lean more into Canada as a growing country I think skilled foreign workers are more needed there than the US

I’ve been studying dentistry for 2 years but i’ve been feeling that the career doesn’t fit me that all, and my dream life is moving to Canada whether I be a good dentist here, that’s not my life dream…

So, hypothetically, without considering the fact that you should study what makes you happy… which career is more easy, clinically and financially to move to Canada as a foreigner?

As a Dentist I think it’s the best paid one but also I think is the hardest one cause by itself is a very pricey career and you might need more clinical experience than the others to prove.

As a psychologist I guess it might be the easiest one as it doesn’t have as many clinical trials as the others but I have read that you might need a PhD or Masters to make an actual profit off of it

And as a nurse, I don’t really k now much but I’ve seen many websites and even governmental convocations to work as a foreign RN abroad.

[IWantOut] 30M USA -> Sweden

Hi! I am in a 5-year long-distance relationship currently and we have been trying to close the gap for a little while now. I have visited 3 times (for a total of 6.5 months across the trips) and we are both pretty comfortable with our dynamic and relationship. I am going to be the one who moves over to her in Sweden. I know the main pathways to move to Sweden are studies and work, but I am having trouble figuring out a way forward. I do know that getting married is a possibility as well, but that is considered to be more of a final measure as we both would like to truly live with each other for a bit before marriage.

I have an Associate's degree in Computer Technology, which is just basic IT stuff, so my current career status isn't superb. My current work is just a retail position as well.

What I have been doing:

  • Saving up money through my full-time work in retail
  • Selling my belongings for extra savings
  • Applying to bachelor programmes at universities in Sweden through the country's university admissions site
  • Attempting to apply for jobs through sites like Glassdoor and Arbetsförmedlingen
  • Taking Swedish lessons from a teacher to develop conversational Swedish

Essentially, I am just kind of flailing and could use some course correction or new perspective. Thank you for reading and taking the time to help!

[IWantOut] 35M Work From Home Australia -> Ireland

Okay so my plan is to get a Working Holiday Visa soon so I can move to Ireland in Nov(could be later as I do have year to activate). I have a work from home job which I'll be taking over. Once I do Ireland I'll be 36. How do I stay out of Australia for as long as possible? I really don't want to come back for a myriad of reasons. If I didn't have to come back ever again I wouldn't. Is there any way of staying anywhere else for a working holiday or does some European country just have an agreement with Australia where I can live there forever? I mean other than the obvious meeting someone and getting married but even that is a long lengthy process and people have not been successful in it. Is there any way of not coming back here?

[IWantOut] 34M law US -> Spain/Italy

Hi All,

I think I have a bit of a unique situation. I am a practicing US attorney who is fluent in Spanish and learning Italian.

I’ve spent quite some time in Barcelona and Milan and greatly prefer them to my current living situation. I have spoke with my firm and confirmed that they will allow me to work remote indefinitely from the EU for a reduced salary of $175.000. I’ve also spoken with my state bar and ensured that practicing abroad would not be a violation of any ethical rules.

My reasons for leaving are the lack of good public transportation in the US and the poor quality of food and nutrition in the US as well. I also think even on a reduced salary, my quality of life would be better in Spain or Italy than a high cost of living area in the US.

Does anyone have advice or guidance on navigating working on EST for long periods of time while in Europe and how the immigration authorities may look at constant trips back and forth to the States on the various nomad visas?

[IWantOut] 20M Plumber USA -> Spain

I'm not a plumber yet but I'm thinking about going to trade school. I've done two semesters of college in Computer Science but I've realized it's not something I enjoy doing. In the time that I haven't been studying I've just been working restaurant and warehouse jobs.

Is there any way I could go to trade school in Spain and then get a job there? Wouldn't have to be in plumbing. If I couldn't go to trade school there is there any way I could go to trade school in the US and then get a job in Spain?

I want to move to Spain because I love learning languages and I want to become fluent in Spanish (I'm currently intermediate). I wouldn't mind moving to a different country with a decent quality of life (besides other English-speaking countries). I just chose Spain because Spanish is the the only other foreign language I speak although I would be more than willing to learn another one.

[IWantOut] 24F USA -> France

I am researching economics grad programs across the EU, but mostly in France.

As I research economics programs I have an undergraduate liberal arts degree in Politics and have taken some light course work in economics and statistics. I’m currently taking a community college calculus course to prove extra competence.

I’ve noticed that a lot of economics programs state that one of the requirements is an undergraduate degree in economics. Since I’m unfamiliar with the values of French higher education, does anyone have any guidance on how to explain myself to these institutions that might be unfamiliar my undergraduate background? Any advice in general? Thank you

Edit: my current work is in public opinion research and am familiar with survey methodology.

[IWantOut] 23m Brazillian -> Us/Uk/Belgium/Scotland/Germany

I plan to study Computer Engineering, if possible for no cost or a small cost a year, I may work at the place if it's possible and necessary, the exact budget would be 18.000 euros a year or 18.600 dollars a year.

Ive seen places like College of the Ozarks where you get no tuition fees at all, and i want to find alternatives (What would be the best no tuition university in US? if possible one close to California as it's the best place for computer science and engineering), also seen public universities in Germany but my diploma is not enough, so I'd have to study a year in Brazil first, which is manageable but not preferable.

UK seems very distant but is my favourite in the list, with the tuition costs and the ausence of aid it's very improbable, unless someone has a different light on that.

Scotland has the same problems as UK.

Belgium has some low cost universities but I don't know Danish, French or Spanish (I can learn spanish quick as it is close to Portuguese).

[IWantOut] 25M Russia -> Canada/New Zealand

Greetings. For a while now I've been wondering which destination is best for a potential relocation and the two stood out among the others, Canada and New Zealand. Both are English-speaking countries with a high standard of living, migrant-friendly policies (I think), more stable and peaceful than their more powerful English-speaking neighbour. So if a theoretical young adult from Russia wished to find peace, quiet and stable employment which of the two would you recommend?
