My first ever car, purchased in 1998…. The lowest-spec VW Golf available (I think it was 1.3L, 4-speed manual)… Mars Red, the big bumper kit and alloys that I slapped on it were worth more than the car itself… but I LOVED it!
Just picked up the Golf R this past weekend, loving it so far!
I’m sure that many Golf owners out there have similar stories… the bug stays with you forever.
Anyone have a shop they recommend, ideally one that I can bring my own parts?
Thanks in advance!
Do any of you know if all 2019 Mk7.5 Golf R’s were fitted with a soundaktor? Mine doesn’t work forsure! I get most of the noise from the exhaust.
Hey guys, just today this engine oil level light popped up. Briefly at the start, then twice during a freeway drive it blinked. I headed home afterwards to leave the car while waiting for my mechanic to respond.
Is this just more of topping engine oil?
Hello fellow neRds,
I got into a 2018 Indium Gray R 6MT with just over 50K miles around six weeks ago. The first owner went Stage 1+ Unitronic around 20K miles. He had the full carbon intake + turbo elbow installed. I am interested in going Stage 2.
I have the following ready to go to meet the next stage (and more)
Engine
Suspension
Tires/Wheels
-new 18 Konig Helioform Bronze
-New Contintental Pure Contact All Seasons (silly Tire rack deals on both)
The suspension will see some significant updates and the plan is to get the car ready for Stage 2. The install process will happen in the next few weeks.
My questions:
Got a solid deal on the Integrated Engineering down pipe; in PA with this 200 IE cat, will this do any good with PA emissions (using 02 sensor)? is the most secure path for the the Unitronic 400 beast that is $1900 even discounted? Is the difference between these DPs largely the premise that the Uni has the robust 400 cat?
Beyond the bigger cat in the Unitronic, can I expext the performance of the IE to be just as good? I care more about the part meeting the demands of the tune and being good for my daily more than the emissions concerns.
Assuming I can figure out a solution to emissions each year — I have this 02 spacer in anticipation of this move -- and I know a few friendly shops in my area that will work with me to pass—
Is the best path to ride with my Integrated Engineering DP?
I suppose I am in part answering my question, but really was curious if the performance the Stage 2 will be just as good with the 200 IE cat.
Thanks for an counsel
Bought 24' R this may and have been in love. Only thing right now that's been done to her is an MST cold air, and the only cosmetic mod is a minimal spoiler extension. I'm looking to continue modifying this car and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions for the next step as of right now. Any suggestions are appreciated.
9 months later and I still really enjoy driving this every day 👌🏼
What are everyone’s thoughts on used R’s with high mileage?
There are a few in my area 2017+ for 15k-20k with 180-220k kms.
Considering one as a first car for my 18yr old.
I’m mechanically inclined and don’t mind rolling up my sleeves. But I don’t want to be wrenching every weekend or get into major engine/trans/turbo repairs that will cost $$$.
(I’m already aware of the HPFP and cam follower issues)
Worth it? Stay away?
Michelin Cross Climates on new 18” wheels. The ride was indeed quieter and smoother than the stock 19” with Hankook Ventus. I also hit a particularly nasty road gap on the highway and was glad to have the thicker rubber. Didn’t run into snow or ice on the roads but it was pretty cold, 20F, and handling was uneventful. I wasn’t hucking the car into corners, I’d expect it would not grip as well as the summer performance tires in summer conditions, but I took some turns at a good speed and found no slipping.
2 pairs of skis, 184cm and 177cm, fit through the middle seat trunk pass through just fine. Any longer and they would have interfered with my arm getting to the shifter. A crate with my ski gear sat next to the skis in the trunk. I didn’t even need my roof rack or to put down any rear seats…! Admittedly I would have if I had 3 pairs of skis with me, but 2 was fine.
The surprise for me on this trip was how much I liked Drive Assist. For a Tahoe day trip I leave early morning and I basically let the car drive itself the entire trip down I80. It’s just distance/speed control and lane keep and I found the behavior predictable and good, much better than a Tesla which I found scary. I even used the lane change with the turn signals. I wasn’t sure how this would all work in a manual but the car has plenty of torque in 6th gear so it’s totally fine.
Less surprising are that heated wheel and seats are nice when it’s cold.
It’s fascinating to have a car I can both hoon through mountain roads in AND cruise down the highway with minimal input and in more comfort than my BMW X1 (plusher seats, quieter, much better ride quality)
Anyone know if the B5S4 17” Avus wheels fit over the brakes on the MK7.5 Golf R? Trying to run these on my new to me Golf R for my winter setup. I couldn’t find a definitive answer searching
Just put this MBRP exhaust and absolutely having a blast with this car now. Also put on the winters and she’s looking 🔥
So, I've recently come into some money (legally) and after paying off my mortgage I have a nice chunk left over after nest egging. I'm considering a new 2024 Golf R MT as a weekend/track car. Is there anything I should consider before purchasing? Problems or issues? Long term ownership experience? Stuff like that. I've only ever owned an VW once, way back in 1992 I had a GTI in Japan, was actually my wife's (then gf) car. I just loved driving it.
So on my MK6 I would leave my defrost / heated mirror setting on all winter and I also had reverse dip programmed so my passenger mirror would dip into reverse. Seems like on my USDM Mk8 Golf R that they only dip in R - which then means the heated is off. Or if I leave it on heated, it won't dip in reverse. I've taken a look in OBD11 but it seems like it is only about enabling or disabling when it is on R. Anyone know of a way to do both?
Not the end of the world to move it each time going forward but previously I'd move my knob twice a year, once in summer and once in winter.
So looking to get a late MK7.5 R wagon, took one for a drive the other day, loved it. I have discovered the existence of the Soundakator.
I don't hate it, but if we have a simulated sound device in the car I was wondering if it's possible to change the sound, rather than just shut it off. Say could I make it pretend I have an I5 or V10? I've tried googling but I'm new to the VW/ Euro car space so don't know if I'm using the right words. All my results were just about turning it off.
Edit - I understand the RS3 has one also, so is it possible to make the Golfs simulate I5 noises?
Recently got a vw mk8 golf as a present from my parents for graduating college , it’s not my first golf , I’ve had a mk6 and 7 . I’ve tried a few pulls in the car and let’s just say I wasn’t going the speed limit , didn’t exceed it by a lot tho . Same day my parents show me a screen shot of a messege they got showing I sped , it’s not a ticket or anything , no it was some sort of app that told them I kind of sped . I did these pulls in a close and safe road . I’m trying to find what app this this . Nothing is on my phone . What can you suggest it is ?. It’s something to do with the car either a tracker is stuck to it or I don’t know need your help because occasionally I take my cars to the track .

Everyone, be careful buying and selling with strangers online and exercise discretion.
Neither r/Golf_R nor any of its mods are at all responsible for any losses.
I bought this R a few months ago and was talking to this old man (76) I work with. I was telling him how usually drive is eco mode. He called me stupid and said why would you buy a car like that just to drive it like a normal Golf. How many of you deny your enjoyment for fuel economy?
edit: MK8 Golf R
I know a lot of us have already made many adjustments to our cars using OBD11. And have looked on forums in a bunch of places to make the tweaks we want. But I thought I might share a Google doc I found that appears to be kept up to date. It appears to have even been updated Nov of 2024.
To be clear I did not put this together nor is this my work. Just wanted to share here for people's reference. It has been very helpful for me, thought it may help others.

-edited to make it more clear this is for an mk8 golf r.
What do you think about VW and Rivian designing the Electric Golf (possibly even Golf R) that's being considered for 2028-2029.
Maybe this belongs in a Canada thread? I broke down and ordered a "no drill" front plate holder from Kollektiv Werks, despite being a Canadian company charging Canadians in USD. The result is a 130$ mount becomes 191$ CAD (PayPal exchange was 68 cents to the USD, the lowest it's been in a decade or more). This place is just an hour away. Having no time to fool around, I bought it but my experience is coloured.
BTW, bought an R. I really wanted red but wanted a manual transmission more. It's a Spectrum colour (91 Blue). I was going to pass, based on the price, before someone on this forum pointed out that it was a fair price for a Spektrum. I have the full service history, always done at the VW stealership in Milton Ontario or Kelowna BC. Attached is a super boring photo. Next challenge... winter tires on 17" rims.
Attached is a really boring photo of my new to me R between two even more boring white sedans.
As per my last post, quite a few asked to hear the 3.6 vr6. Off to storage for the winter!
