Anyone know how much i could get for my mk2? Currently on 14900 Miles ( 24000 km ) No rust what so ever, mint condition. Any guesses what i should ask for it?
So the 16v KR engine with ITBs has always been something of a dream engine of mine. However, these 16v cars are really rare and expensive where I'm from, but the engines and parts are not too expensive. I have a 1.6 carb CE1 currently and am wondering how difficult it would be to swap and what are the essential parts needed to do it. Of course it would be obvious to say if I'd be swapping anyway to go for an ABF or 1.8t but those are about twice the price and seem a lot more involved with also having to change over to hydraulic clutch, DBW, engine mounts and everything.
This is purely theoretical for the foreseeable future, not planning to actually do it anytime soon, just trying to win some information as I have never done a swap before but would love to try my hand at it sometime.
What is absolutely needed besides the obvious things like the engine itself (head, block, injection system, harness, ECU)? Will it mate up with my stock 02O gearbox and shifter? Would it work with my stock CE1 cluster (that only goes to 7k)?
I have no experience doing an engine swap but am just theorizing with a mate a bit. I'd love to stick with the semi-originality of the 16v instead of going with an engine from a completely different car and I also believe the hp it produces is more than enough for the light weight of a mk2. But if it's 3x harder than any other swap I might be persuaded to consider something else. Cheers!
I'm more of a modern VW guy (Mk4 TDI Wagon, MK6 GTi, MK7 Alltrack, MK8 Golf R) but I've always liked the 80s Golf/GTI. Now that I'm of the age where I'm considering a project car I'm really drawn to the Mk2 GTI. My question is do these make for good project cars for somebody who is a car guy but has never done a project? And can these still be had relatively affordably (say <$7K for a running car that's not totally rusted out)? I'm having trouble finding any for sale in Canada to get a feeling on price.
According to the seller it could definitely be fine for the trip I’m just wondering what you all think? Drive is about 2.5-3 hours
Thinking about selling my Mk2 Golf GL in order to buy a Mk2 Jetta...
How much are we thinking is a fair price?
Been fully resprayed. Wheels refurbed. New clutch. No rust 🧂. Original 1.6 petrol engine under 80k miles.
Hey, I have an intermittent rear wiper issue. Didn't work when I bought the car, then after a few years I cleaned the motor and it worked again for about 2 months, blew a fuse and couldn't get it to work anymore. Got a replacement motor which then worked for about 6 months, but now it's blowing again. This time, even with the motor plug disconnected, the fuse blows as soon as I turn on the ignition (so with the switch in the "off" position).
I've read that the switches in the stalk can go bad which is easy enough to replace. Is there a way I can make sure the problem is in the switch and not in the wiring itself? Or should I just go ahead and replace the stalk anyway. The wiring seems in good condition but of course only 10% is visible so who knows how it looks further down the vehicle.
hi, one of my cooling hoses just exploded while on a drive. is there a website you guys recommend with a parts list so i can easily find out what parts i need to order? thanks in advance.
Hi, i have this weird issue where my 1.6 td 1v (with JR pump and kkk turbo) starts to idle high when warm.
When its cold it idles at 950-1000 but then when it gets warm it suddenly rises slowly to 1400 rpm and stays there consistently. Engine was rebuilt last year, and it shouldnt have anything than can chance the idle?
GOLF MK2 GL.
Not starting. It was turning over a bit, but now nothing just a click.
Radio works ? But no lights do.
Has petrol in it, now nothing though just clicking (barely). What do i do???
Looking at purchasing a mk2 with 1.8L V4 8 valve. 1987. Had a parts company tell me I’d be out of my mind to buy something like that bc parts are next to impossible to find. Thoughts? I’m sure those are all out there and people have these cars.
Im looking at a 1987 MK2 GTI- i was told it can be hard to find parts for unless its swapped with a digifant. Im new to all this but the car I found is in great condition, runs and is exactly what I'm looking for. It does have a swapped engine from another GTI. The owner replaced and redid the whole brake system, spark plugs (new) and had the fuel injection fully replaced. They're selling for $4500 and it's clean!
Thoughts?
dad was not impressed
I have a 1985 mk2 golf that I have been battling with the last half year, we have everything set other then there is a vacuum leak which we cannot place. Does anyone know the most common places for leaks?
Bought this poor guy for €100 to disassemble and swap some parts to my main car and sell the rest. The body is too dead to try to restore it within meaningful time and money. Hope it will help to keep running someone else's cars
I’m looking at a mk2 with 2 lights instead of 4, what’s the difference? Thanks in advanced- I’m new to this
Just wanted to share this pic of a country golf i just spotted out of my golf.
I bought these original mk2 rims for my golf but the centre bore doesnt fit. It goes onto the mounting thing but it doesnt slide all the way in. Is there any solution or should i return them?
I wanted to know if I could replace a 1.6 8v block with a 1.8 8v block, and if it would be a straight swap, or if any modification would be required.
My current block has a hole in it, so needs replacing but I am not currently in a position to do a complete engine swap.
I believe headgasket is going, oil cap is getting milky and coolant is disappearing. It’s not over heating yet but I just wanna know what’s the average headgasket repair cost on a mk2. I’m in uk
I can get my hands on one for pretty cheap and I really like the look of it but I have some questions regarding fitment and the breather hose (I have a 1.6 carb).
Good afternoon! I’m wondering what is the best brake upgrade for the mk2 (I own a Pre 1987 16v) I upgraded part of the system to the 256mm conversion, with toledo spindles and calipers, and now i’m thinking about upgrading them to 280 or something that can brake real good, any suggestions?
Hey guys I managed to get my hands on a full front brake setup from a Corrado G60. The car it was from had ABS so the calipers have an ABS plug and the wheel hubs have the ABS ring on them. I have no ABS and am not converting to ABS, so I figured it'd be fine to just get rid of the ABS plugs in the calipers and get a new wheel hub without ABS ring. Just checking if that's correct or if there are actually other major differences between ABS/non ABS setups which make them incompatible with eachother.
Hi all!
Going to go look at a MK2 very soon to purchase. I wanted to know if there was anything in particular to watch out for. There is minimal rust only on outside (outside of door handle and other places on bodywork) but not underneath.
Is it worth buying one if there is rust and how bad does rust get?
If I end up buying it I will post pics here 🤑
Thanks !
Edit: I had the mileage off and forgot to update the title, didnt realize until i found the vwvortex post.
I will probably be documenting this journey over the next 6 months on here as I bring my ol' MK2 back to life. I bought the car in 2014 with 45k. I daily drove it for a couple years but I didn't have a commute at all so just drove it around town, only at 46k now. One day the wiring harness caught on fire and it took a couple years to find an 85/86 wiring harness, it was a hacked up GM harness I believe for the small batch of Westmoreland GTIs built unlike the German ones.
I got that fixed and then it started having CIS-E issues and at that time I was working a big boy job and the car kinda just went in my garage. Now it is coming back out. I just moved a couple other VWs out of the driveway and now is the time to get this back up and running and fully restored.
Previously have owned a MK4 VR6 Jetta, MK5 stage 3 Unitronic build, MK6 and MK7.
For shits n gigs, here is my old VWVortex build. I was an OG mk4 kid in the mid 2000s. Absolute degenerate in those days like all the early mk4 kids.
