Assembling H2 Powered Fuel Cell

Hi everyone.

I've been trying to improve the Horizon Educational fuel cell car kit by producin my own Hydrogen, storing it and then utilizing that on the fuel cell (like on this video https://youtu . be/d85OX6yEwE0?si=Izk7rS0Scny6y3rC , minute 2:15)

The problem that I have is that when I plug my balloon to the fuel cell, and then to the motor, nothing happens (see picture).

I have no idea why and after watching some videos, I've come up with nothing :(

Any suggestions?

Does fuel cell change the PH of the output water in the vapor?

Hi

I heard that It can have environmental effect. But does the ph level in vapor matter? How does it change?

Is it possible to make a bag from a sheet of Nafion 424 membrane?

I have a sheet of Nafion 424 that I would like to form into a membrane bag. Is there a way to fuse the sheet to itself to make seams? It would also be nice to be able to patch holes with scrap pieces of Nafion if I had to.

I'm not sure if it's some combination of just heat/pressure/time, or if there is another component involved. It would just be so convenient considering the lead time from Ion Power for bags is something like 4 months.

How difficult is carbon capture in a natural gas fuel cell?

I’m thinking specifically of SOFC fuel cells where CH4 and air are the inputs while H2O and CO2 are waste products. I would think it would be relatively easy to isolate the carbon dioxide from the water/steam.

Am looking for resources on how to quantify how much electric energy would be needed to isolate carbon dioxide from steam. Any recommendations? Also any info on type of equipment needed would be good too

FYI I am a mech. eng. and have somewhat limited knowledge of chemistry, so please don’t use too much chemical jargon in answers

What would the ideal Proton Exchange Membrane be like?

Hey guys,

I am working on a project where we have secured a 3 year funding contract (close to 20MUSD) to develop a new generation of PEM from the ground up (for electrolysis and fuel cell applications). We would potentially use a Nafion (or similar base) and modify/customize it mainly for :-

- Higher H+ conductance

- Lower temperature operations

Since we are still in the ideation phase (we have a well established membrane technology platform to execute the project), I would like your inputs as to what direction to take, especially in terms of what are the main challenges/limitations with current PEM offerings, and what needs to be improved upon to create a higher efficiency PEM.

Off the bat, we believe we can create a PEM with a much higher conductivity than Nafion membranes. Is that a good starting point? How would this impact a fuel cell or an electrolyzer?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated, and of course happy to answer any questions you might have. Thanks!

WLTC for Fuel Cell Vehicles

Hello all,

I have a question regarding fuel consumption tests according to the WLTP standard, more specifically I am interested in the WLTP test for hydrogen fuel cell cars, hoping that someone is more familiar with it than I am. There is a lot of information about the test procedure for "normal" plug-in hybrids, usually the cycle is run until the battery is empty (charge depleting). Then the cycle is run again, with the energy coming only from the combustion engine and recuperation (charge sustaining). The corresponding consumptions are then weighted against each other and converted to a representative consumption. However, I find much less information about the procedure for FCEVs. Since in most current vehicles of this type the fuel cell acts as a range extender and charges a battery, these vehicles are technically also serial hybrids. Theoretically, they should be tested similarly to the hybrids with combustion engines... Maybe someone can help me.

Kind regards

Aqueous electrolysis of citric acid

Why don't we produce hydrogen from citric acid (would need a battery or solar cell) and put that hydrogen up to a fuel cell to make it produce electricity for homes or cars?

Fuel Cell Market

https://preview.redd.it/6sp3xwc8ri7b1.png?width=1640&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac2c7d798587f1c5a0ff4bee6cd2b74f3547ec65

The Global Fuel Cell Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 28% during the forecast period, i.e., 2022-27. Most of the market expansion would be propelled by the mounting need for renewable energy sources owing to growing environmental concerns over rapid climate changes and the alarming levels of carbon emissions from various industries.

Latest Trend in the Global Fuel Cell Market

  • Increasing Adoption of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) in Data Centers & the Defense Sector

Data center operations are highly power-consuming as these systems require uninterrupted electricity to avoid or minimize the chances of data loss. As a result, many companies have started adopting sustainable alternatives to achieve cost savings, and fuel cells, particularly SOFC, have witnessed remarkable growth. Moreover, stationary & portable applications of SOFC are in high demand across the defense sector for noiseless & efficient power generation. These trends are creating new avenues for the Global Fuel Cell Market to expand at a significant growth rate over the coming years.

A profitable fuel-cell company finally emerges amid industrywide losses

https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/hydrogen/a-profitable-fuel-cell-company-finally-emerges-amid-industrywide-losses

Since the invention of the fuel cell in 1839, no company has been able to earn a profit from this energy-generating technology.

Until the historic moment in which we now find ourselves.

Germany’s SFC Energy, a maker of methanol-powered fuel cells for portable and remote applications, reported in March that it had generated $1.8 million in profit on $78 million in sales in 2022.

Fuel cell vs battery for EVs

Hi all,

Just started getting into the zero emissions field, can someone tell me why it is KWh for batteries but KW for fuel cells? I understand one is energy based and the other is just power.

How to understand this and compare the two technologies in terms of energy and power?

Thanks in advance!

Duty Cycle For Hydrogen Power Generator

Hi there!

I am currently taking on a project where I need to design a generator that runs on hydrogen. The generator should be able to function like a traditional 100kW diesel generator, where it can power anything below and up to 100kW. There is no clear load duration, as it is meant to be able to support power for as long as the user intends to. There is also no clear user behaviour, as different users would most likely use it to power different things based on their industry, I guess the worst-case scenario is that the user uses the device to power 100kW for an entire workday (9-10 hours), but other than that, there is no definitive model on how the equipment would be run.

When I went to the fuel cell manufacturers and explained these criteria, they told me that they are unable to supply any fuel cells unless we give them a clear duty cycle. If I understand this correctly, the load cycle is the ratio between the time it is on vs. it is off given a period of time. But would I be able to generate a clear duty cycle in this case when there is no definitive load or duration?

DIY Hydrogen fuel cell? Hydrogen to electricity

Want to dabble with making my own fuel cell, Ive seen a lot of videos on YouTube on how to make one but as a hydrogen generator, rather than a fuel cell.

Basically wanted to know the validity of using Home Depot stainless steel parts rather than using platinum or expensive materials. I realize it won't create as much electricity as using more expensive parts, but just curious.

Has anyone tried making their own hydorgen fuel cell with off the shelf parts? If so how much electricity did you produce from how big and how many plates?

Self sustainable Fuel Cell?

Hello, my question ist quite simple: Does a fuel cell give me more (usable) Energy then I Put into it? (Not talking about free enery Here ...) Or in other words;

"If I use 1kwh of electricity to Split water into hydrogen and oxygen, how much Energy could I generate when I burn the hydrogen or how much Energy does it Store in General?"

And I'd say it does Not mean free Energy as the Energy is already present in the water as for example in the Form of hydrogen and is Just Made available.

Thanks in advance!
