My family just got back from visiting relatives in the Fresno area and we are now considering moving to north Fresno or Clovis, where either Buchanan or Clovis North are the assigned high school. We wanted to get some input from locals to see if this move will be a good fit for us. Our kids are 2 and 4. These are some of the things that are important to us and some questions we have:

1. Evangelical Church with expository teaching that also has a solid children’s ministry.

2. A Chinese-speaking community (specifically Cantonese, but open to mandarin too) where they can be exposed to others speaking in Cantonese apart from just immediate family members. Hoping for things like playgroups, storytime, kids activities taught in Chinese, Chinese school, etc.

3. Activities for young kids - clean playgrounds, indoor activities for hot summer, affordable extra curriculars/lessons (eg music, sports, dance, martial arts).

4. Christian homeschool community/co-op. We’re thinking about homeschooling through elementary school.

5. How are the public schools? Is there a push for certain social agendas incorporated into the classroom? Are school bathrooms split by boys and girls?

6. How safe are various parts of the city?

7. How is the diversity in the classrooms?

8. We’re considering one of the new build communities. Any opinions on the various builders?

9. How does the cost of living compare to the Bay Area? I assumed it would cheaper but the restaurants prices I saw this weekend seemed comparable to the Bay Area.

10. How is traffic? How long does it take to get across town or will I be able to find most kids’ activities near where I live (like within a 15-20 minute drive)?

11. Is it hard to find a good pediatrician that takes PPO? Is there a waitlist to get a doctor?

12. Are there any allergists in the area that do food desensitization with 2 year olds? My 2 year old is currently doing OIT and we do not want to discontinue that.

Hi! I arrived in the US and Fresno from the Philippines a few months ago, but I've mostly been staying at home or confined to places around my neighborhood since my husband works long hours as a nurse and I don't have my own car. I was hoping to ask this subreddit for personal suggestions on things I can do or visit by myself using the FAX, as well as other places to visit with my husband on weekends. I know there are resources online but I prefer to hear what locals would suggest, and not just the usual tourist destinations.

About me: I'm quite frugal and introverted, so I like to do activities that are cheap (or free!) and do not involve being around a lot of high-energy people (nothing against them, my social battery just drains fast), unless it's volunteer work or learning new things. I have visited the local library, but I think I am currently done with reading for a good while and wish to step outside more and explore places.

Back in the my hometown, I would often hike in the mountains and swim in the lakes and hot springs; visit free museums and art exhibits; attend free workshops, lectures, and seminars on many various topics (my interests range from arts to science, and technical skills to practical skills); and volunteering in underserved communities as a healthcare worker. I wish to be able to do similar things here as well, but I'm not sure where to start looking or if I am looking well enough. I check here, on VisitFresno, and even Facebook events, but I always seem to be missing out on a lot more 'cause I see people posting about events I don't know about after the fact.

As a follow-up question for outdoor activities, where can I go that's just within Fresno, and are there any thrift stores that specialize in selling outdoor gears? So far, my husband and I have traveled to attractions in places around San Francisco and Los Angeles, also to SEKI National Park, and we're planning to go to Yosemite in December, but now that it's gotten colder, I need more protective layers, as a tropical girly.

Also, while I enjoyed my visits to those places, I find the long travels quite draining (and the high speeds on the freeway scary), so I wish to visit more places that are only within a 1-1.5h drive. Smaller parks or trails are just as great!

Another thing I'm really interested in is learning more about the Native Americans and their culture and history. I used to work with Indigenous Peoples groups in my province, so I want to meet ones from here as well.

I really want to get rid of this microwave I have. I’ve called many many places they all say you can’t drop it off we’ll pick it up but it’s just 1 microwave and I don’t want to pay the extra money for the pick up. Called second hand appliance stores too they say they don’t take anything. It’s not really junk though, just missing a fuse. Where do I drop it off? Or if someone needs it?
