    Question about Dad’s possible release

Hello! If anyone has any good insight that could help that would be awesome? My dad has filed for a modification (hopefully a release) and they ordered his progress report and everything and that was filed and sent to our attorney and the prosecutor. I have spoken to the prosecutor a couple weeks prior about everything and he said he would be willing to consider his release, he just wants to see his progress report and speak to his counselor and such. The progress report was sent out 10/11/24 after the court lost it for almost 2 months.. The original motion for a modification was filed 8/10/24.

I haven’t heard much at all from our attorney throughout this whole process, I’ve had to call several times to figure out what’s going on, and me doing so is the only reason they even realized the progress report was lost.

Does anyone have any idea how long it will take for him to get an actual court date? He is getting antsy and after 14 years and us having a pretty good chance here for his release… I am too. I have a hard time getting ahold of our lawyer and I can’t tell if our lawyer is dragging his feet in getting things done and getting us a court date or if this is normal?

    Any information helps! Thank you!

    Getting a College Degree

I am wanting to get a college degree. Most of my criminal record has been expunged all of which are misdemeanors. Anything left on my record is more than 10 years old. However, I am still having trouble finding the right degree to go after. I wanted to work in special education, but come to find out. I have to still disclose my expunged record to the Board of Education so I don’t think that will be an option. I am looking for suggestions on what kind of degree would be best with an expunged, criminal record and two chargers remaining on my record both of which were misdemeanors a criminal damaging and a misuse of property both are more than 10 years old

Would love to talk to some ex-cons

Hello, I am 17m and in high school. I am interested in Prison Reform as I believe the American criminal justice system is extremely flawed. In my free time I do research on prison reform. I believe we need to radically reshape the system. If any ex-cons would be willing to chat with me about their expernices I would love to talk. I want a first-person account of the prison system.

    Someone help

My mom is going to be going to Pa state prison in February when she’s sentenced. I’m worried I won’t be able to visit her because I’ve heard state jails do not allow anyone who has been to jail to visit. I was in county jail about 5 years ago maybe longer, but I’m not on parole I’m not on probation. Am I really gonna have to go years without seeing my mom?

Federal plea agreement and self surrender

I have been federally indicted numerous white collar offenses. I am awaiting further information regarding a forthcoming plea agreement from the federal district attorney to my attorney. I’m being urged to self surrender to us marshals over the next 2 weeks . My attorney believes I will be moved to the federal detention center in Chicago.

Does anyone have any information regarding what it is like to be in jail there?

I’m expecting a plea in the range of 12-18 years.

For the New York City/New Jersey area ex-cons: Those that are from the pre-9/11 New York City/New Jersey area and saw the World Trade Center Twin Towers often and was locked up during 9/11, how quickly did you get adjusted to not seeing the World Trade Center Twin Towers anymore post-release?

    I want to make change

Hi. I hope this is allowed but I understand if not. I’m not an excon but I’m very passionate about prison reform. I’m at a turning point in my life and I want to pursue education relevant to making prison less about torture and more about growth and reform. But I’ve never been and I haven’t lived it. So, I wanted to ask what would have helped you? What did help you? What are things that absolutely sucked? What do you think needs the most attention first? Also anything else you want to tell me about that you think is relevant.

Surrendering to federal prison in a few days and have an ankle monitor, what’s the worst thing that can happen if I don’t come home for curfew to stay the night with my gf?

Will I lose out on the money put up for bond that I’m supposed to get back? Will it add more time to my sentence or fuck with me getting into a halfway house? This would happen a night or two before surrendering.

    College Student Seeking Interview Volunteers

    Hey Y'all,

I'm a college student at Oakland University currently seeking some interview participants (at least 3). I'm researching and doing an exploration project on Released Convicts.

Interviews will take place fully online and through email (so if you don't like having your face shown, that's fine with me). I'm seeking to have questions answered about how being back into society has affected you.

Respond to this post if you're up to doing that and we can sort out the other stuff privately.

(this is a serious inquiry so I hope you guys are up for this)

    -Best Wishes

    Thoughts on UNICOR?

Hi everyone, I’m a university student currently researching the ethics of Unicor, particularly whether it is beneficial or exploitative to prisoners. If you have a few minutes, I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has worked a prison job through Unicor.

    • Did you feel exploited while working there, or were you grateful for the opportunity?
    • Did the program help you in any way after your release (such as teaching you skills or opening doors to job opportunities)?
    • Were any services provided to you in prison as a result of your participation in Unicor (ie: better food, financial services, etc)? If so, what were they and what impact did they make?

Your input would be incredibly valuable for my research. If you are uncomfortable answering on this subreddit, I have also created an anonymous google form with the same questions:  https://forms.gle/HUZGTjQAVUUV2R8m7

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences!

Anyone voting for the first time?

This may be a long shot but I’m working with an org in Chicago to write a story about formerly incarcerated or justice-impacted individuals who are voting—or voting for the first time—this year.

In writing this we want to highlight the experiences of those navigating the challenges of losing access to certain freedoms like voting and explore what civic engagement looks like for them, both past and present. It’ll also cover future reform.

If you or someone you know is open to a 30-minute phone interview (or would prefer an email exchange), please feel free to drop a comment or reach out privately.

Will sitting out jail time for revoked probation show on background check?

I have a few questions about background checks. The initial incident occurred in 2015 but took 2 years to move through courts, so it's right at the 7 year mark now. However, I didn't finish all the requirements of my probation and a warrant was issued about 5 years ago that I am now trying to deal with. An attorney I spoke to said that at this point the best option may be to just sit it out which could be a fairly minimal amount of time, but I am worried about whether or not this jail time will show on any new background checks and reset the 7 year limit.. He seemed to think it would not, only the initial conviction, but didn't see 100% confident either. So curious if anyone else had any experience/insight on this.

Also, it was initially a felony charge that was knocked down to a misdemeanor, so also curious if that will show or if it will only show the misdemeanor conviction.

Thank you guys, any help/insight at all is appreciated. This is really tough for me to deal with, it's the only time I've ever had any legal trouble and I'm not really doing a good job of handling it mentally or otherwise.

    Questions for formerly incarcerated individuals

Hi everyone! I am a student journalist at the University of Southern California and I am conducting a research project focused on the previously incarcerated community. I am looking to learn more
directly from those who have been impacted by the US prison system and hear their stories.

    My three questions are:

    1. What are the biggest misconceptions about the incarcerated community? How have these impacted you or others around you?

    2. What do you wish the media would focus more on/what news do you wish there was more of for your community? Any specific story ideas?

    3. What do you wish more people knew about the formerly incarcerated community?

    Thank you!

Ever Catch Yourself Watching Bootleg Prison Videos?

I tend to a lot and usually my wife has to stop me because it gets me in an unhealthy mindset, even listening to podcasts and such.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like it even happened to me and it's like I have to remind myself I'm almost 29 now and there's a huge gap in my life that's just. Kinda. There. I even mess up on my age sometimes when people ask me.

In particular I scrounge up prison fights. You know how it is; I barely remember most of mine, everyone's got five different versions of a fight playing out that just happened. They happened and they were over, all pure good ol' muscle memory and adrenaline. Only a few stand-out moments stay in my brain as a visual.

    Anyone else?

What is happening with all the prisoners affected by Hurricane Hillane and Milton?

Just got to thinking about the plight of those incarcerated in the affected areas with massive floods and the destruction of roads, widespread power outages, along with the lack of staffing due to mandatory evacuations and supply shortages affecting food and basic medical supply’s, etc. I’m guessing they were locked down until the storm ended but some of those facilities had to have been flooded out, and nowhere to transfer to, I’m be surprised if nobody died. I haven’t seen anything in the press or social media about this topic so I’m curious if anyone has any firsthand knowledge.

Is there a reason why the food is required to be awful in prison?

I am always reading about how the food takes getting used to, that it upsets your stomach the first few weeks, that it is terrible, etc. My childhood best friend did 19 years at Chuckawalla Valley on the California / Nevada border. He told me there were special occasions where they would bring pizza and BBQ in from outside, but otherwise the food was pure garbage. My friend also explained something to me that really got me thinking. He told me how California was the only or one of the only states to have TVs in the cells. He said this was done so many years ago to keep morale among prisoners so as to prevent melee's, takeovers, etc., and to just generally try to have a good operating prison. So what would be so bad about not insisting on the food being awful? I can throw together canned beans and off brand boxed macaroni on the the cheap that is still pleasant to eat. I'm not saying give prisoners steak & lobster, but wouldn't it boost morale among prisoners if they didn't insist on intentionally serving shit food? If you can do something slightly more tolerable at the same cost to the government, and it keeps prisoners in higher spirits, why not ?
