As kids my grandfather (born in Vragender in 1930’s) used to call us ‘Jarnis’, like ‘you little Jarnis’ and I took this to mean like you cheeky child, but I haven’t been able to find any reference to this anywhere, even with different spelling variations, and I wondered if anyone could shed any light?

My partner and I are looking for a new rental apartment. We recently found a place that seems to fit our needs, and after meeting the landlords, we liked it and expressed our interest. However, they informed us that they are considering selling the property in the future—potentially in about seven months. They assured us that the likelihood of this happening is low, but wanted to be transparent and asked that we agree to move out if they do decide to sell.

I assume that Dutch law provides some protection for renters in these situations, meaning the landlords would take on most of the risk. However, this arrangement makes me uncomfortable because I’d prefer a long-term living situation without the stress of possibly having to move out so soon after moving in.

Additionally, the previous tenants lived there for quite a long time, which is also what my partner and I are hoping for. However, when I asked about the rental contract, the landlords mentioned that we would be taking over the previous tenants' contract. This strikes me as unusual, as it may be related to the maximum regulated rent price set when creating a new contract. By having us take over the existing contract, the landlords could earn approximately €300 more than the regulated rent.

I don’t fully understand this system and would appreciate any advice or insight someone might have.

Op mijn school zijn er door het vapen in toileten raampjes van ong 10 bij 60 cm op de toilet deuren gedaan van de kinderen de docenten hebben andere toileten wat ik hier raar aan vind is dat je als je er naar kijkt van de linker kant van de deur alle urinoirs kan zien en als je dichterbij loopt ook iemand privé deel mag dat überhaupt?

I’m currently in my second year of a Master’s program in the Netherlands. During my first year, I met a Dutch guy in one of my group projects, and we got along pretty well. I thought we were building a solid friendship. But after a few months, he started acting distant, and eventually, we had a tough conversation where he told me he didn’t want to stay friends anymore. His reason was that I wouldn’t be staying in the Netherlands long-term and that our friendship didn’t offer him any “benefit.” He also said that, for him, group project friendships are just temporary and don’t usually extend beyond that.

I was honestly pretty hurt and confused because his behavior over the past months had made me believe we were becoming close, long-term friends.

It’s a bit hard to accept, but who knows what the future holds? There’s still a chance I might stay in the Netherlands.

So, my question is: how do you build genuine, long-term friendships with Dutch people? I want something real and lasting. Any advice?

I am (F23) a Law Graduate from Jakarta, Indonesia. Im focusing on International Law (Comparative and Diplomatic Law) and im currently writing an essay for my internship about localization of prostitution and its comparative situation in various country, since Indonesia adopt some of dutch laws, i think it would be neat if i compare it to the dutch laws regulation, since dutch have red light district.
