Good Beginner Camera?

I am interested in photography, from standard portraits, to some action photos (I’m a track/xc coach) I was checking out stuff on mbp.com, but I just wasn’t entirely sure of what lense/camera combo would be best and affordable

Been using the Canon EOS 300d since 2003 is it worth upgrading.

I’ve been using an eos 300d for 20 years off and on to make pictures at special events (iPhone 12 pro otherwise) and for astrophotography mounted to a 11” Dobson.

I’m looking at upgrading now within the same price class but it doesn’t seem worth it. The eos 250d at €750 hardly seems that much of an improvement. Has DSLRs not improved much in the last 20 years?

Canon T5 vs T3i just for photography, which should i pick?

They are at the same price, i will use them just for astrophotography and some photos for school, what is the better option? Complete beginner.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a good camera I can get that has clean hdmi output or that I can change to clean output in the settings.

Looking to spend 1000 if I have to. But def open to something cheaper. I just want something I can livestream and record and edit videos with.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Nikon 18-300mm lens vs 70-300mm lens?

I have a 18-55mm kit lens, and 35mm prime lens. I want to be able to take more photos in the zoomed range, like animals, birds, buildings, landscapes etc. I also like street photography and photos of architecture. And night time photography as well.

Should I buy 70-300 mm or 18-300mm.

70-300 mm is AF P, DX f4.5-6.3 ED VR

18-300 mm is AF-S, DX f3.5-6.3 ED VR.

My current dslr is Nikon D3200.

I have never handled a zoom telephoto lens before so I am wondering if i need to carry a tripod to shoot at 300mm. Also would it be to grainy at night/evening?

Stay with Sony or change over (have 20+ year old Sigma Lenses from my 35mm Minolta)

I am debating about getting a new camera. My current Sony A55 is about 14 years old. It is not full frame. I went to Sony because I had a few lenses from my past 35mm Minolta setup. At that time I did not have funds to buy all new lenses and my Sigma lenses where and are still working great.

For an upcoming vacation to Alaska my wife brought up out of the blue me getting a new camera body or setup as she knows my current setup is old. I am just kind of shocked my old setup still works. My Pixel 8XL does have a great camera with 30x zoom. But I want a setup that will do better. I have stopped using my current setup because my Pixel can take better pictures. But it is also 12+ year new camera tech.

I currently have 4 lenses. I use the 80-300mm and 50mm the most. I also have a 2x teleconverter lens I use with the 80-300mm. My Sony body does not like it much and I have to go to all manual settings.

These will be the main uses of the camera
Vacations (would like a easy to pack setup)
Astronomy (attaching it to my telescope)

Thanks for your thoughts. For budget I am not looking to go overboard. If I can go just body know I can afford a nicer one. I am just not sure if the old lenses would effect a new body in a negative way. Know there are adaptors to use my old lenses on different bodies, but remember in the past they where just OK.

Best Camera For Beginners

Hi, I've been considering getting a camera for a long time. I would like a camera primarily for photography. I usually photograph the sky, cars on the street, portraits, and pictures of the lake. I know nothing about cameras, but I was considering getting a DSLR to save money on lenses, despite the fact that mirrorless cameras are better. I'm not sure what the best options are. I did a quick google search and these appear as the best cameras:

  1. Canon EOS R50
  2. Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV
  3. Nikon Z fc
  4. Canon EOS Rebel SL3

Also, I was thinking about creating a decent portfolio in case this becomes more than a hobby. Thank you for reading :)

Cool pix p520 DLSR (questions)

Hello I just got my hands on a 2013 coolpix dslr camera and was wondering if it would work with the elgato camlink and in terms of clearness and focus would it currently be better then the webcam I currently have ( Logitech Brio) I want to use it for streaming and recording and I was just curious if it would work and how well it would work.

Reviving an old Nikon D40 for a dull job

Hi all. Years ago I bought a D40x from eBay, at that point it was already out of date, haha. I think I paid $40 for the D40, a 70-200mm, a tripod, four batteries, charger, case, etc. Not a bad deal. Back then I bought it for photographing a large inventory of OEM NOS boat parts. It worked, but it was silly with the lens and having to be so far away.

Note: I'm not at all knowledgable with camera's. Just enough to be dangerous. Lenses are a foreign language to me.

Anyway long story short, I have a new project for inventory photography. This one is much bigger volume wise. I think the D40 is going to come out of retirement, get a new to me lens, and get hooked up to my PC.

Two problems:

  1. I think the regular old 18-55mm? that comes with these cameras would be fine for standard product photography. The items are not super small, averaging can of soda size to dog crate sized, so macro shouldn't be needed. I scoured eBay a bit, and 18-55mm AF-S lenses are still pretty pricey in comparison to what I paid for the camera. Am I way off on my needs and spending $50-80 on a 18-55mm lens?

  2. I can't remember what photo software I used back in the day with the D40x connected via USB. It was a batch photography program where I could type in a filename before taking the images (I'd type in part number), and then shoot the product. The images would immediately show in the program, file named sequentially with part number. It also gave me previews of each shot. I have a feeling the software was way more powerful than that, but that's what I used it for. It was circa ~2015 when I did this.

Can ya'll help a guy out? Modern Google Search is atrocious with all the AI generated website spam and I'm apparently not as good at navigating the web anymore to find old junk :)

Help with Nikon D850

Does anyone know what is causing the lines shooting across the frame while I'm filming? I'm using a Nikon D850 with a 50mm Nikon lens. I've adjusted the settings, lighting and nothing seems to be helping. Thanks!

AF Illumination bleeds onto picture

I have a Nikon D5600. When shooting in dark scenes, there is often (not always) annoying red artifacting at the edge of images. I realized that the red AF Indicator light stays on for a tiny bit longer than it should appearing on the final image. To be clear, I'm not talking about the Focus assist light, but the red light seen in the viewfinder. Now, does anyone have an idea on how to fix this? I also can't find an option to turn it off in the settings, am I blind? Thanks in advance

EOS1100d does brown tint on automatic mode. I replaced it with the same model I used for years. I use same standard 18-55 optics.

So my old EOS1100d broke or better said had nasty pieces of dirt on the mirror so I replaced it with the exact same model and used the same old standard optics which did fine for me.

Now the new cam shoots darker photos and I have to adjust it on manual mode to get proper photos.

The flash looks like someone might have replaced it with a cheap China model. Is this a possibility? Seems, the flash does not have as much power as the old one. Sadly I already trashed the old cam so I cannot compare.

I use it for my daily work so I cannot adjust the mode with each photo.

2nd Solution: Any other Canon Cams in the same price range for easy use? I like to have the same menu and all that. I only need SDCARD or CF Slot and no fancy optics.

Camera suggestions - lifestyle/hiking/travel

Hey all,

I currently use a Canon 6d with a sigma 24-105 zoom lens and a Leica M4. These two cameras weigh my backpack down a ton when I'm on long walks or hikes or on travel and hurts my back.

So I'm looking for suggestions to replace my dslr with a newer semi-professional to professional grade camera setup (body/lens) that will be as light as possible but also can produce high quality shots with high megapixels. Preferably brands that allow for cheaper lenses and flexible options? Though fujifilm/sony have caught my eye recently.

What camera to buy with good AF for photographing my kid?

Hi there!

Currently I have a Canon 700D, together with the 18-55 IS STM kit lens, the 10-18 IS STM ultrawide, and the EF 35mm f/2.0, that lives glued to the camera.

I' ve been enjoying my Canon with the 35mm very much; however, sometimes it misses focus, and in the last shooting session it missed well above 50% of the shots taken in daylight, compared to almost none taken in low light, which is odd at the very least.

That being said, I'm looking for a camera and lens combo that has a very reliable AF system (precise and fast)in all kinds of lighting situations, in order to keep up with my daughter. I would also like to have a slightly wider lens - 30mm or 28mm in APS, compared with the 35mm (56mm full frame equivalent).

Canon was not definitely my first choice; however, today Sigma and Tamron announced some very nice lenses that will be released July and the following months: https://www.dpreview.com/news/8845986526/sigma-announces-six-aps-c-lenses-for-canon-rf-mount

https://www.dpreview.com/news/6978364377/tamron-developing-11-20mm-f2-8-di-iii-a-rxd-for-canon-rf-mount

I don't mind buying used products, and I'm very used to a prime lens, so a zoom is not a requirement. It can also be a Full frame camera; nevertheless, my budget is not exactly high. I can go to 700, 800€ tops.

Video is good to have, but not a top priority.

What are your recommendations? Any brand is welcome, since I can sell all my equipment.

Sony a6000 or Canon T1i

I was gifted a new Sony a6000. I’ve had my T1i for years and it’s fine for what I use it for. Mostly wildlife with the kit 250mm zoom lens. I have two other lenses but I rarely use them.

The Sony came with a 16-50 kit lens.

The question is should I keep the Sony and invest in a zoom lens? I’m considering the Sony 55-210 lens for $299. I know there are much more expensive lenses but I’m not super serious about photos. Just want to zoom in and have sharp photos.

I’ve been using the Sony with the kit lens and I like it. More compact with a usable screen.

If I get the Sony 210 lens will I notice a significant improvement over the Canon? It’s 40mm less but I assume I can crop as it’s a much higher MP than the Canon.

Any other lenses to consider if I keep the Sony?

Camera suggestions?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could potentially steer me in the right direction for finding a camera (decently priced, for a student)?

I’m not unfamiliar or new to photography, I’m currently on a crime scene photography (university) course and took general photography back in high school, but up to this point I’ve only been using an SLR camera in my spare time!

I’m just looking to get more familiar with a DSLR camera and to play around in my own time. I’m most familiar with Nikon cameras, which I’ve been using on my uni course. Thanks!

Brand compatibility

Hello camera people. Noob question incoming.

I was recently given my father's Canon 450d with a couple of (assumedly) reasonable lens. The camera works fine but being older is missing a few features eg video recording. Is there any problem with replacing the body of the camera with a different brand? I know the lenses will physically fit any other dslr but would I miss out on image stabilising or auto focus etc?

Any tips for fixing a camera that’s been wet by rain?

Hi everyone!

I needed some tips on fixing my camera by myself, since I am traveling around Latin America and can’t find a reliable place to get my camera fixed in Bolivia where I am currently at. I’ve been using Cannon EOS 600D and while I was trekking to Machu Picchu, it was soaked in rain. It worked fine for while but then after a one or two hours, it wouldn’t turn on and only would make blipping noise when turned on. I’ve tried drying it for few days and it still would make merely the noises when I switch it on and push random buttons to see if it would work. It’s been a week now and I just can’t find a way to fix it. Is there any appliances or products that I should use to dry my camera fully? Or what other ways would there be to repair it and use as how it was?

Also, if anyone knows a good place to fix my camera in La Paz, Bolivia, please let me know the place and the quote for the repair!

Thanks in advance!!

Canon R6 quality comparison question

I am getting interested in digital photography and have been playing around with a Canon R6. I have compared its images to previous Canon DSLR models and holy moly the quality seems to have taken a HUGE jump with the R6 and later models. Some reviews seem to corroborate this but I wanted to check in with the field. Is that accurate? Did the R6 launch a new era of over all image quality the likes of which had not been seen before? Please enlighten me. What would one step below the R6 be and is it as bit as it looks to be? Thanks all.
