Urgent Help Needed - Are there Ubers in Monticello and Livingston Manor?

Long story short, we both found out our license was expired this week… we have an Airbnb in Monticello about 15 min away from town.

We had stuff planned this weekend in Livingston Manor.

Are there reliable uber and Lyft cars in these areas?

Crashed Plane on Friday

I usually hike alone, but I'm pretty interested in looking for the old B25 that's supposed to be on the side of Friday Mountain. From what I've read and researched, it looks like a pretty rough bushwhack to get to the site.

I'm looking for some company, as it seems a bit too risky for a solo adventure for me. I'm planning on summiting Friday and Balsam Cap as well, since I need both of them for my 35 still.

Not terribly picky on dates. Weekends work better.

If anyone has been and has some advice, that'd be super helpful as well thanks

LGBTQ Friendly Spots?

Hey, my husband and I are planning a Catskills weekend for November - looking at Windham and Tannersville currently - and wanna vibe check any queer friendly spots. Doesn’t need to be like, a gay bar or anything like that but just places we’ll feel comfortable. Any places to suggest or anywhere we should avoid?

We’ve done the Hudson and Kingston thing, and both those places have really developed a gay scene and culture but I haven’t heard much re: Catskills.

Our short list of hotels: Hotel Lilien, Wylder Windham, East Wind Oliverea

Thanks!

Backpacking in slide mountain area during foliage season

Hi,

Always wanted to experience the fall colors a little more, so I'm thinking maybe doing a overnighter backpacking trip in the slide mountain in the coming weeks to enjoy the view a little more. Wonder if anyone has done this before, is there a lot of people on the trail camping overnight? How is the temperature normally during the night? And is the water source on the mountain reliable?

Thank you for all your responses!

North facing campsites with expansive sky views?

I’m taking my kid to do some star gazing this weekend. Does anyone have some advice about north-facing, backcountry camping with expansive sky views. I’d like to get far away from city lights, but probably won’t have time to hike more than 4 miles in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Quick Trip: Should I stay near Woodstock or Windham

I will be coming upstate tomorrow and looking to stay near one of those two towns. Will be about 20 minutes away from each regardless. But which town is better to hang around for a day? Mostly just want to enjoy a cute town and some okay food. I’m sure I can find nature activities anywhere. Also would love to find an apple orchard / farm to pick, so if one is close that’d be great. Thanks for the recommendations.

Looking for Structural Engineers/Contractors

My family has kept a farmhouse in Lexington for the last 70 years. We have renovated bits of it, but it needs a structural assessment.

Does anyone have any recommendations for structural engineers or contractors who do structural evaluation for this area? Many of our long time connections have passed or moved out of the area.

Thank you in advance.

Flat, scenic walks in the Catskills

I'm hosting my family in the Catskills, and want to showcase the natural beauty that I love so much about living here. However, one member is unable to do any walking at an incline, so hiking is out of the question.

Does anyone have any recommendations for shorter/flat/accessible walks or scenic pull-off spots in the general Woodstock area? Ashokan Rail Trail is on the list! Anything else? Off-the-beaten path is fine, as long as trails are easily navigable. Thank you!!!

Bear hunting questions

I moved from Florida to NY a little over a year ago. I’m an avid waterfowl and upland bird hunter and have found some good success for birds on public land in southern NY. I’ve been very interested in hunting bears for a couple years now. Ate one my buddy shot about 3 years ago and it was some of the best tasting meat I’ve had. Absolutely delicious, so I’d like to get some more. Does anyone here hunt bears on public land? Or any landowners who have nuisance bears? I would be happy to have someone accompany me on a duck hunt in exchange!

Has anyone explored which internet service provider in Andes, NY has the best service and rates? My home is on Main Street and I'm currently paying $150 per month for the local phone compamy service. Is there a better alternative? Thanks!

Best resort for teenagers

I am hoping to plan a relaxing family getaway next June where I do not have to plan anything. Just show up and have all of our food and activities taken care of. My family includes myself, husband and teenage daughter (we will likely let her bring a friend). My daughter thinks the Catskills will be boring (because everything is boring to teenagers). And she thinks most resorts are geared towards little kids or senior citizens. Any recommendations for a resort that checks all of our boxes? Low key relaxation for mom and dad, but lots to do for teenagers?

In West Catskills for 3 days / 2 nights. What’s there to do?

I'll be here for the weekend.
Up for anything. Must sees, hiking, eating, drinking, relaxing, driving, etc.
I'm in the Roscoe area by the Pepacton Reservoir.
What's a perfect itinerary look like?
Thanks in advance beautiful people.

visiting 10/5-10/7 - haunted stuff?

Staying in Kingston this coming weekend! Was really looking to checking out the notorious Shanley hotel, however they are filming a tv show this weekend (good for them!) and we won’t have access. If we took a drive up there anyway, are there places/destinations we could check out? Anything haunted would be a bonus but we are also down to shop/eat/explore. Thanks in advance!

Stellar Events Scam

Hey all,

Just wanted to let everyone know about my experience with this Stellar Events website (https://www.stellar-events.org/copy-of-ma-stargazing-cruises-1) that advertises a stargazing event in the Catskill mountains. I had my tickets for a while now, excited for this event but it was really rainy this past weekend and I saw on their Facebook (through a comment on a post) that the event was cancelled. I was unable to get in contact with anyone from the company when trying to get a refund - I tried calling on multiple days/times, left a voicemail, email, and finally left a comment on the same Facebook post, when I saw that the company responded to someone about the cancellation - apparently, that person has received a cancelation email, but I never did. There was no communication whatsoever during this entire process, and they are impossible to get a hold of. I just tried to follow up the FB post where I commented, but I'm unable to access the page - it seems like they've deleted my comment and blocked me.

Seems like a very shady company. Just wanted to warn others out there who are considering this event.

Catskills hikes and Inns

My husband and I are planning a last minute trip to the Catskills next weekend. We've never been and I'm a little overwhelmed with where to start planning. We're mostly interested in hiking, seeing fall views, and checking out local breweries and/or wineries. Can anyone recommend a town to stay in? Or a nice Inn within a downtown area? We're debating staying inside a town or an Airbnb that's more rural.

Ashokan Reservoir Fishing Guidance

Hey there,

I am making a trip up the the Ashokan this weekend to try and do some fishing. I am somewhat new to the sport (been fishing a couple time a week since July), and would be happy catching any species they have there. I was wondering based on your experiences, where would be the best places to hit on the reservoir this weekend. I have only been there once and it is absolutely massive, any help narrowing down spots to fish would be greatly appreciated. It looks like the weather for Saturday will be around 70 with partly cloudy conditions, and I will be getting there early in the morning around 9 am. I'm also a bank beater so I do not have access to a boat. Thank you, any tips or advice would be extremely welcome. I don't wanna go all the way out there and get skunked all day.

Hike Options

My boyfriend and I are going to catskills area next weekend and as i’ve been researching it looks like Giant Ledge and Overlook Mountain are two popular hikes. We are both active and want a good view of the foliage and whatnot. If we can only do one, which do you recommend and why? If it’s possible to do both maybe we could consider but I have no concept of how long these hikes will take/if we will be exhausted after just one. Thanks!

Cornell Mountain

Hi everyone! I am hiking in the catskills this weekend and want to do Wittenberg and Cornell Mountain trail one of the days. However, I have read some things that say Cornell crack is pretty channeling. I am only 5’0 and will be going alone. Is this doable? I am athletic and hike alone very often! I’ve just never been to the Catskills before and want to be sure I’m not setting myself up for failure. I can also always wait for someone on the trail to give me a boost too if I need someone. Just wanted to hear some opinions on this hike! Thank you!

cheapest liquor store with large selection?

happy to take a drive since i need to build a whole bar, but definitely trying to find the best value since a lot of the small town ones are aggressively pricing anything even slightly off the beaten path

Camping at Alder Lake — busy at weekends?

Hi!

I’m looking to take a trip to the Catskills in the next few weeks. I’m hoping to camp at Alder Lake, in one of the designated primitive sites.

Is anyone familiar with the area and can advise on how likely it will be full? I’m aware there’s a fair few spots, but i will likely arrive on either a Friday night or Saturday morning, so I’m concerned others might beat me to the spots. I’m nervous to travel all the way and not have anywhere to set up!

Other locations I’m considering are at Echo Lake, but I’d definitely not be able to get up there on Friday so it would be Saturday afternoon which feels more risky.

Also open to suggestions for other reliable spots as an alternative or as a backup!

Many thanks
