Ideas for a community project through local college Ag department

Hello everyone! I am a grad student in Sustainable Food Systems, working with a group of undergrads (Ag with a variety of focus areas). We noticed that our state has a ton of resources for farmers, CSA's, market farmers, to connect with buyers. However, these are all centered on the capital of our state and completely leave out our side of the state.

I'm thinking about making my capstone project focused on this need to connect direct-to-consumer farmers with buyers. The undergrads would be able to gain credit by helping so I have a lot of manpower here. Would love some feedback from actual farmers before I make a plan (and yes, we are reaching out to local farmers as well).

So the idea is a centralized website with a directory of local CSA, farmers markets, roadside stands all shown on a map. Additional pages for farms if they want them in lieu of having a full website. Also setting up events with different farmers at various locales (coffee shops with lots of outdoors space, parks, etc) for things like how to cook with kale, freezing veggies, and whatnot. We would manage the organization and marketing as well as gathering follow-up testimonials for farmers to use on any future marketing.

I'm wondering what else farmers need help with in terms of connecting to buyers or community education, any other ideas that have worked well for you, whatever feedback you might be willing to share. Thanks!

Looking for feedback! CSA Portal Usability Test

Hi r/CSA!

My teammate posted about a week ago looking for current CSA members or farmers for a Usability Test and we're still looking for a few more participants!

We're graduate students from the M.S. Human-Computer Interaction program at Georgia Tech and our team is working on our capstone project in the community supported agriculture (CSA) space.

We are trying to get feedback and insights from current CSA farmers or members on a CSA portal prototype that we have through a moderated 30-minute usability study. If you're a farmer who runs a CSA or are a current CSA member, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the portal and how it might impact the CSA experience. We'll include a $10 Amazon gift card as a small token of appreciation for your time and participation.

If this is something that you might be interested in, please fill out this quick 30-second eligibility survey, and we'll reach out to you:

Interview & Usability Study - Customer Supported Agriculture Customer Portal

Hello there!

We are graduate students in the M.S. Human-Computer Interaction program at Georgia Tech working on our capstone project. We've researched and designed an internal portal to improve the relationships between CSA Farmers and their customers, more specifically helping farmers share information about CSA boxes and farm updates with their customers.

Currently, we're trying to get feedback and insights from CSA customers about the portal through a 30-minute usability study. If you're a CSA customer, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the portal and how it would fit with your CSA farm. During the study, you'll be completing a list of tasks on the portal and describing how you feel about the portal. We'll be giving you a $10 Amazon gift card for your participation.

Here's the link to sign up: https://calendly.com/guruduttperi/csa-study?month=2021-03

Online Survey for Customer Attitudes towards CSAs

Hi, I'm a Master's student at Georgia Tech exploring various design opportunities in Community Supported Agriculture and the local Farm space. More specifically, I am proposing two design ideas and would like to know which one you would prefer, as a consumer. This survey should take no longer than 5 minutes and will be shared only with the members of my team.

Why is CSA so cheap?

Hello, just a quick question for my project...can anyone explain to me why csa products are so cheap compared to products from big agriculture companies? I supposed that they (big companies) produce a lot of products and therefore it should be cheaper than CSA but apparently its the other way around...why? is it because csa doesnt have to spend money for transport?
thanks for any replies :)

When we go to our CSA, the same vegetables that are for sale seem to be of better quality (less bruising or more visually appealing). Do CSAs generally include their less visually appealing items in the CSA while putting more visually appealing items for sale?

Local Roots NYC vs Farm to People

Local Roots NYC: https://localrootsnyc.com

Farm to people: https://www.farmtopeople.com/

I guess this is a question more for people in the NY area...but anyone who has tried both Local Roots and Farm to People, do you have any opinions on which might be better and why?

How much do you charge for how much produce?

I am hoping to start a csa next season, I have a poor of land , recources, and some growing experience, with plenty of more knowledgeable people I can draw information and advice from.

However, csa is a thing that is relatively new here, so I don't have any competitors to look at. So I have a few questions to get a feel of the market if you algorithmic answering.

How much do you charge per season

How much does that break down to per box

How long is your season

And how much (amount and variety) of produce do you supply in your box?

Thanks!

I need your opinions

I really want to make a "career" change.

I've spent 10+/- years in construction where I mostly did structural ironwork (rigging, flagging, welding) but I've also worked as a trim carpenter a few times in between ironworking. I got tired of that a few years ago and began cooking in fine dining under chefs.

So my background, knowledge and skills are focused around hard labor and food.

Every job I've had feels empty, tethered and certainly doesn't pay enough.

So I have been considering getting a certificate from UMASS for sustainable farming. I believe in organic and sustainable principles and am very disillusioned with work solely based around profits most of which go to the owner/CEO.

What I would like to know from you who own/manage farms is, do these courses and certificates hold any weight?

I know I could start in an entry level position and potentially work my may up but I have always wanted to further my education as well as have work that contributes to society and doesn't harm our mother Earth.

So to be clear as to what I am asking:

  1. Do courses in sustainable agriculture hold weight?

  2. What is the best way to get work in this field? (No pun intended)

Passive income from a CSA? Looking for tips to improve income, without increasing membership

Hi everyone. I've just found this sub, and I'm excited to have a look around. I was hoping I could ask for some advice. I've got an interview at a local CSA to become a co-farmer. I'd really love to have the opportunity to work with these guys, but I have to make it work financially, which their current model just does not, since we live in a high COL area in a high COL country. Of course, I don't expect a huge salary, but I do need one that covers my bills. They currently project an income of about 10k p.a. per farmer (there will be three in total), but this is on a freelance basis, and the pot is fixed, so we'd have to charge sales tax/VAT as well as possibly paying income tax (if we earn more throughout the year), from the total. Even without hitting an income tax threshold, this is take home of 7.9k, which doesn't cut the mustard for me, sadly. Especially since it will be full time plus during the growing season. They already have a waiting list for members, so expanding the number of people who can join and grow with them doesn't seem to be a possibility.

The two current farmers supplement their income by running workshops, mostly in winter. Until I can drill down on this further in interview, it's not really clear how much of an opportunity this presents. Both farmers seem to be so busy that they don't have the headspace to think about additional ways to draw down income, and it seems like this could be something the new farmer could set up before next spring. I was hoping to find what other methods we could look at to help spread and increase the total income for the farmers. I was having some thoughts about creating a YouTube channel, or creating some online courses, as a way to generate small, but regular income.

I welcome any advice that you can give on what else apart from membership fees that I can look into to bring to my interview.

Many thanks in advance!

What do you think about my 2019 University of Hawaii Breakthrough Innovation Challenge intro? Like a CSA model.

What do you think about my 2019 University of Hawaii Breakthrough Innovation Challenge intro?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-L2d2FplKk

Please let me know what you think.

The format intro asked to be under 2 min and asked for Idea, Market and Competition.

Too big trees can either be sold as wind breakers for the many new farms needing evergreens for coffee and chocolate. Or they can be cut for Christmas Trees for larger companies.

We do grow Christmas Trees- the current 'stock' is about 5,000 trees locally sourced. The market is over 200,000 trees more needed per year.

We will have to deliver by truck when needed - or families could pick up on own.

We want to try a subscription model for families to propagate a Sacred Ohi'a Tree as well as ' be the steward for a Christmas Tree. We're making a direct correlation to people buying imported trees caused many of the diseases in Hawaii- including the one that is killing Ohi'a.

You are right that many people prefer 5 year old trees. HI grows some plants more quickly. We are thinking of using both an artificial tree for size and an adopted Christmas Tree as well as an Ohi'a tree for new family traditions.

Trees are sustainable. We believe that our value is preventing the billions of dollars of damage importing diseased dead trees causes Hawaii's fragile ag and ecosystem.

We would be a CSA Plus model- returning value back to the land in a loop.

Better Storage Methods

My parents and I joined a CSA this year. For the most part it's been great, however, right now my parents are putting all of the produce into ziploc or plastic shopping bags and storing it in the fridge. Anyone have any good, more sustainable ways of storing everything?

really need your help with answering these questions

Hello I'm making a research for my school project about US farmers and small businesses and I really need to get at least 20 responses to my questions to make the research valid. I only need to ask 7 very simple questions, but calling every farm that I find in google maps is really hard for many reasons, so I would really appreciate if you can distribute this tiny questionary to at least 20 farm owners. As I said earlier the questionary is very short and will take only about a minute to complete.

Here is the link for the questionary: https://cafarmers.typeform.com/to/LdYbLk
