New tank lighting and heat adjustments

So I got my bearded dragon a new enclosure recently that's around six feet wide, three feet deep and two feet tall. The lights are sitting on top. I have a 150w heating bulb and a T5HO as well as a ceramic heater if it gets cold. The air temperature hovers around ~85 and the basking spot is only ~90-95 with the ceramic heater, which I feel is a bit low since he's spending pretty much 90 percent of his time on the warmer side of the tank. Does anyone know how I could raise the temperature to a good level?

Haaaaalp! Brand-spankin new beardie mama here

Here goes…..My 6yo son and I adopted this sweetie boy two weeks ago. He’s 4yo. His previous mama was diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t keep him. I’m new to reptiles. My son’s dad adopted him first. After complaining that the unfinished basement he lives in was too cold for him and that our son lives with me and hardly sees him, he asked if I wanted to take him in. He said he has done all the research and had his original enclosure, set up, everything, plus more he had invested in. Basically a sanctuary with “everything” we could need. I jumped on it, it was actually my idea to get a BD in the first place (insert eye roll) then he ran out and got this guy. I should have known better. His “research” obviously wasn’t great. After diving into the depths of the World Wide Web, I learned (and I’m still learning) he needs a lot more. The first thing I did was get him the right UVB tube lighting, I adjusted his habitat so he has a warm and cooler side with a good basking spot, upgraded his diet of “salad iceberg mix” to a variety of collard greens, bokchoy, cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, acorn squash, a little apple, and his regular crickets he gets once a week for as long as we’ve known. I’m already seeing great improvement. He’s always looked pretty good, filled out pads on his head, his eyes look good, filled out belly. Two nights ago he just seemed “off” he wasn’t being his golden retriever vibe self. All week actually. I still think he might be getting ready to shed. Then yesterday he shat awful diarrhea. Just one time but it was definitely an upset tummy. My first thought was that he is dehydrated. On this weeks episode of “what am I going to learn I am doing wrong” I discovered the importance on proper humidity levels. I’ve only read about people having trouble keeping their habitat dry enough. I live in UT and don’t have to worry about that, only to learn he needs his humidity about 10-15% higher. So, after reading here, that the squash I added to his diet this week that he’s so very fond of, can give them diarrhea, I’m worried it might be that. But everything I read says to give them squash to TREAT this issue. So now I’ve been misting his enclosure. My ex husband, bless his heart, said he hates baths. He seems to actually like the misting. Gently closing his eyes, what I call his “kitty face” like when we give him pets on his head or chin and looks all snuggly and relaxed. It’s hard to keep that humidity level up. It all dries back up so quickly and the levels drop right back down. If you’ve made it this far, thank you & help. Tips, tricks? Mostly I’m just asking, what should I feed him for this? Give him collard greens only and if he doesn’t want them, his tummy might need the break anyway? I hope it isn’t the squash because he feasted on it again last night! 🤣

Bearded dragon reoccurring eye problem

Hello! I have an 8 year old male bearded dragon, he is very healthy in all aspects, vivarium temperatures and humidity are in range, eating, moving and acting as usual, nothing changed in routine at all however, about 3 months ago his eye randomly started blinking strangely. I assumed it was something to do with shedding so left it but it continued for several weeks so I took him to the vets. The vet didn’t really know reptiles from what I could tell and gave him some lubricating eyedrops which I used once a day in each eye for 10 days. At first it didn’t really help but after about 5 days he stopped blinking strangely and was fine. After stopping the eyedrops recently the issue has returned and it seems to be causing him a great deal of discomfort, however it is periodic and sometimes it is alright.

The issue i think is that his nictiating membrane is irritated causing it to not close correctly and getting stuck potentially an eye infection? It is mainly his right eye but the left eye has also blinked weirdly a few times. Upon slowing down the video i noticed it only covers about 1/4 of his eye and is red instead of clear. He has also been itching his eye on the side of his viv and on my hands when handling.

These videos are from about 20 minutes ago where it was causing him particular discomfort. Any ideas on what this could be and how to help him? I am going to ring a different exotic vet tomorrow morning to see if they can help but i am worried they are going to give him a similar course of medication which doesn’t really help in the long run. So any ideas or extra information would be appreciated! <3

New Beardie Owner

PLEASE READ AND HELP!!!!! Hi All, I was recently (as in today) “gifted” a baby bearded dragon. I was not prepared what so ever for this little guy, but had to take him in as his alternative was less than subpar. I need all the advice I can get. I am coming into this new commitment with zero knowledge and am really determined to give this guy a good life. I’ve been researching as much as I can but have come upon many conflicts in what i’m reading, and for now I really just need the basics to keep him comfy. I’ve named him Newton! Here’s what I have so far.

  • he was given to me with a 20 gal tank. If needed I can get a bigger one, just didn’t know if that would be sufficient until he gets bigger.

  • they gave me loose bedding for him but I read that this wasn’t recommended for a baby, so as of now I have him on a “reptile blanket” (basically just a piece of felt.

  • he has a hiding cave in his tank, and a bowl that i’ve put a tiny bit of water in. He also has a branch in there.

  • I have live crickets and I did see him eat one, there’s 2 others in the tank with him now. The crickets are all that I have currently for a food source but I do have the means to get some other things, just need suggestions!

  • as for lighting, I’m not even really sure what I have. I have 2 bulbs, one that is red ?? and one that lets off heat but no light. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT LIGHTING!!!!! I know this is important I just don’t know what is best for him right now, and also when the lights should be on and when they shouldn’t.

Please help me out!!! i’m really committed to learning and being the best beardie mom I can be, I just need some help!

Hiii!

I was looking to get a bearded dragon by next year and I was wondering if some people here could give me advice to properly care for one :). I’ve also been doing some research so I can make sure I’m prepared!

I have a new boss apparently

As a second time bearded dragon owner (rip JT I miss you and what could’ve been) I’m very much so a hoverer. When i moved Psyduck here into his new permanent enclosure from his 10 gallon quarantine tank 3 months ago he immediately took about 3 licks of his substrate and I flipped out. I already feed him that morning so I decided to not give him anymore food in case he was impacted (he also got a good soak which I found out he loves) and he pooped in the middle of the night. I was so happy that he got quite a few waxworms to celebrate and now he thinks HE runs the show. Yesterday afternoon I moved his non-uvb light (100w) away from his heat emitter (100w) bc they’re right next to each other and it’s getting a bit warmer in my area these past few days and I didn’t want him to get too hot. Turns out he wants me to mind my non beardie business as he stopped eating all the way up until 30 minutes ago which was when I moved the light back to where he apparently wants it. Is he the captain now?

Wanna be beardie parent stressing tf out

I’ve been doing research and dude this is stressful. Everyone has their own opinions on what’s best for every little thing and I’m over here like ok sooooo which is it? Anyways right now my biggest stressor is lighting/ heat. How do you decide what’s best? I’m particularly concerned because I have a man child that is stingy with the thermostat at home 🙄 so outside temps I know will affect the temps inside the terrarium. Winter he has it set to 65 and summer he won’t turn it on unless it’s over 90 outside and even then our inside temp is set to 78 (yes I’ve considered leaving him over this. It’s absolutely insane). Because we’re saving so much electricity running a fan in every single room 24/7 instead of dropping the air conditioning even to 70 and running it consistently 🙄 I digress. But anyways. I’m concerned about him/her being too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. So how do I figure that out 🙃

Possible impaction?

My bearded dragon hasn’t had a bowel movement in about a month (I think, at least not that I’m seeing), and appears to have some dried poop on her bottom. I was trying to look for the tell tale “lump”, but I don’t really know what that’s supposed to look like. From what I can tell though she looks the same as she always does. She’s lethargic and eating less, but it is winter so I assumed that was brumation related. She also did definitely empty her bowels before hand like they’re supposed to, (right on her sun rock too 😑).

Is this normal for brumation and did she likely just get some stuff on her when doing that big poop, Or is something probably wrong?
