Fine oats? Question for British bakers

Prue's parkin recipe calls for "fine oats" and just wondering if I have the right thing. I know I could just take our rolled oats and whirl them in the blender but I try to stay true when I can. I bought some Scottish pinhead oats. Same thing? Maybe?

Janusz

Am I the last person to realize that the Janusz on “Crime Scene Kitchen” is the same Janusz as the one on GBBO? I’ve enjoyed his work (and his sartorial choices) on the latter show.

Stewards Inquiry!

Wonder how many people caught that reference since it's from F1 racing. Loved Noel saying that, and it goes perfectly with Paul who also races cars.

Apple pie ideas?

I love apple pie. I've never baked anything. Looking for simple tips.

I was thinking puff pastry squares, cover with applesauce, sliced apples, cinnamon, granulated sugar and then bake or maybe just broil?

Will that work for a poor man's cheat apple pie?

What makes this series so different to the last two?

I had high hopes for bake off last series after cake week. That animal cake showstopper was insane. Biscuit week, similar. Crazy showstoppers. But then from there...I feel the standard dipped. I loved Matty, he was one of my favourite winners of all time, but I definitely felt that the last few rounds was who was the least worse..not who was the best. By the halfway point, everyone seemed to have semi lost heart. In this series however, we are week 6 and everyone has maintained such a high level. I haven't seen the standard maintained like this for ages on bake off. Why do you think this series is working so well?

A theory about star baker

I'm starting to develop a theory that the judges are deliberately being more cautious about giving multiple star bakers to avoid a repeat of Steph and Richard. We all know how anti -climatic it felt when someone got over 4 star bakers and then flunked the final. It seems to me that although people can get 2 , even 3, star bakers...we aren't seeing 4 plus star bakers anymore. I'd say Josh last series deserved at least 4 star bakers. It was ridiculous he only got 2, but then again he failed in the last showstopper. If he'd got 4 star bakers, it would have seemed even more unfair that he couldn't get the title. I'd also say Sumayah probably should have got star baker cake week and possibly last week, if she had..she would have had 4 star bakers already. As it stands, she's on 2. Do you think the judges are cautious about a repeat of the disappointment of Steph and Richard and are deliberately not giving multiple star bakers as regularly? It may help explain some of the decisions on star baker recently.

Sumayah's green dress 💚

Bit of a girly one (and a long shot) but does anyone recognise Sumayah's green dress from Autumn week and knows where it's from??

US viewers, please answer my husband's question

So, in the US, it's called The Great British Baking Show. But at the start of the show, the hosts say ' Welcome to The Great British Bake Off!' and my husband said 'so do they cut that bit out in America?'

So, do they?

Anyone watching Prue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen?

I've been enjoying Prue's baking show, filmed at her beautiful home in the Cotswolds. Her husband is a delightful gentleman and they're terrific together on camera. Prue is a fine host and some of her baking tips and recipes are keepers. Her guests have included Alison Hammond and Sandy Toksvig, with some fun recipes of their own.

Am I the only one who agreed with the judges decision this week?

I love Nelly. I preferred her attitude to Dylan's this week. I wish she could have stayed. However, I feel like she and Illyin have been battling out the spot for being the weakest of exceptional bakers for a couple of weeks now, and while Illyin raised her level, Nelly didn't. She struggled a little with the challenges this week, and I feel she had reached her limit. I honestly felt even if they had saved her, she would have been eliminated the next week. I do think it was her time to go. I understand the majority think Dylan should have gone, and I understand why. But as much as I adore Nelly, I probably would have made that decision myself as a judge. I do think we've been left with the best 6.

No spoilers-just want to know what the categories were for Autumn Week

I want to make apple cider and apple cider cinnamon sugar donuts this weekend while we watch the episode. However, depending on the categories, I may switch gears. Thanks!

Dylan’s Eyebrow

Help me settle a friendly disagreement that my wife and I are having this season. Is the gap in Dylan’s eyebrow from a real scar or just an aesthetic choice (ie. Shaved)? I won’t say which of us thinks which thing…

Why does Samaya dislike Noel so much?

On this last episode (pastry week) she really gives him the cold shoulder. I think she is actually rude to him. I’m a big fan of Noel’s so I’m confused. Can someone enlighten me please? I do like Sumaya too I just cannot understand why she is so rude to him.

Analyse the chances of each remaining GBBO Baker

My thoughts: Georgie - She's probably not the forerunner at the moment, but I just have a feeling she may go all the way. Apart from biscuit week, she's been strong every week. She's the only baker to have won two technicals, and seems to have a real instinct and baking knowledge. I would not be surprised to see her win.

Sumayah - Sumuyah is an incredible baker who certainly has potential to go all the way, but I wonder if age and experience and the stress of the occasion might get to her in the end. She also seems to be following an unfortunate pattern which Tasha , Jürgen and Januz all followed of having an incredible first 2-3 weeks and being the clear favourite, a few weeks of being in the middle with maybe one bad and really strong week thrown in then eliminated in the SF. Maybe I'm superstitious, but SF is my prediction for her.

Dylan - Dylan out of all of them has the biggest future potential for me. But I've seen a couple of episodes when he's forgotten about an ingredient, and he occasionally does come across as a little absent minded. I hope this isn't the case, but I could see the semi final or final getting to him and him making a silly mistake.

Christiaan- The most difficult to predict! I don't think he's the best baker of the series overall, but he's one of the most exciting. I could see him scraping into the final then making a showstopper that excites Paul so much that he wins.

Nelly - Oh I'm worried for Nelly. I love her so much and think she's the most improved of the series by far. Unfortunately though I saw an interview with Noel where he was defending himself against the claim he couldn't relate to the bakers (I can't remember where) where he said he was very close to a baker this year and was tearful when he had to eliminate them. I have a very bad feeling who that might be.

Gill- I'm so glad she eventually got star baker. She's been so overlooked it's ridiculous. She does remind me of Chigs and Abdul of a baker who is completely overlooked initially, maybe gets a star baker mid way, is overlooked again, potentially a QF of SF star baker and then has a decent final but is just pipped to the post by a baker who excites them with their showstopper. Gill for runner up.

Illyin- At the moment, I'd say Illyin seems to be the weakest left. She's got good, but I think they set the bar so high for her with that first bake handshake they are acting as if every other bake she does is an anti climax. Still she's the queen of saving herself when she's in trouble, and if she makes the final who knows? Just because she's not been in contention for star baker yet doesn't mean she's not good. She's clearly talented, and is in danger of being overlooked like Gill was.
